Letter from the Editor
Hello all, and welcome to our fall issue. As I write this letter, it is still fairly warm out, but I know many of you are counting on that cooler autumn air to get out and ride your machines. Since we spoke last, the kids are back to school, and summer has officially come to an end. I myself am a fan of the hot weather, but this time of year can be a welcome change, especially for off-road riding. The temps cool, so it is more comfortable to ride, and hopefully the dust will give us a break too. Since our last issue, we have been out quite a bit covering some big events. In our pages, see the Line Mountain 4-Wheeler race. It was my first time at an event where full-sized machines went out and pounded the turf, but I thought it was really cool. The folks at Line Mountain have been competing for years in central PA, and they offer classes for ATVs, motorcycles, and side by sides. We also attended the Bantam Jeep Festival in August, where close to 1,500 Jeep owners came together to celebrate the birthplace of the original four-wheel drive. Next up we attended Fisher’s ATV Reunion along with a few thousand other off-road enthusiasts. That entailed four days of off-road heaven at Rock Run with tons of other fun activities thrown in for good measure. We then packed up and headed even further west to check out Scrubgrass Village OHV Park and the Pine Township Poker Run. Close to 600 riders came out to play in the mud and the dust while raising money for the local fire company. And, oh yes, there was the Llewellyn run too, which had close to 1,000 riders at the second annual event. Other than that, it was business as usual around the old Rec Rider tent. Make sure to check out some of our club features in this issue, as we picked up a few readers and contributors, and also pay close attention to the PA OHV’s message this month. Yes, it’s similar to many others, but the bottom line is to join and do your part. It’s only $20 a year, and if you like to ride it will be the best $20 you ever spent. Well, that’s all for now. Aces High for Good Intent Hose Company’s Second Annual ATV Poker Run By Tom Pickup The minute we rolled into the small town of Llewellyn, Pa., we knew something big was happening. As we navigated down the hill off Route 209, we saw it ... hundreds upon hundreds of ATVs, side x sides, and even some dirt bikes lined the fields adjacent to the fire house ready to run the Good Intent’s Second Annual Poker Run. As we were guided to our parking spot, the size of this event became clear. Trailers, campers and 4x4 trucks lined the fields, using all available parking space. Wow, this event had doubled in size! Once we got parked, we quickly unloaded our KYMCO UXV 500 SEi side x side. With our camera in hand, we were off to talk with attendees and capture the energy of this event. As we met with Bob Smith of Good Intent Hose Company, he explained that they made some good changes to the course and added some trails, a total of over thirty miles! He got us registered, and we were off. We mingled around a bit, talking with a lot of people, including some we remembered from last year, though a lot were new. Several clubs were there as well to support the great cause, such as Coal Country Riders and the Colliery Tunnel Trail Riders to name a few. It was a widespread bunch of riders from several generations who all came out to participate in this fun event. What a great sport, and by that, it was time to start! We positioned our KYMCO off to the side to allow the first group of
riders to go by. About midway through the first group we could not contain our anticipation and joined in! Whoo hoo! As we blasted down the trails of Blackwood, we thought to ourselves, man, 37 miles might go by quick. Nonetheless we kept pace and enjoyed the beautiful day. That’s about when we rolled up on the “mud hole!” This pit of muck and water was 3’ deep with a vertical wall at the exit! It swallowed machine after machine! Guys and gals would blast in only to be denied by the wall! We watched and took pictures of attempt after attempt and laughed and hooted with the crowd to entice the next rider to try! We saw three, maybe four riders crawl their way out of this mud hole under their machine’s own power. The rest were winched or towed. Lucky for the others who did not want to participate in this muddy debacle of bogging, there where trails around it. But for many, including us, this mud hole proved to be the party! We even had a guy belly flop in it! Now this is fun! And so much for a short ride! Four and a half hours later and we had only traveled six miles and did not even get our first card! Better get moving! As we traveled on to the first stop, we were again impressed with the amount of people on the trails. Men, women, girls and boys, this was one menagerie of people! We even saw a vintage 1978 Suzuki PE250 and the guy had matching gear! This was one cool bunch of riders and passengers, out doing what we all love and enjoy: gettin’ dirty. The trails provided some very scenic sights, especially the creek crossing! We traveled through the woods, up over obstacles and down fast, open paths. The terrain changed mile to mile, providing a lot of fun while rippin’ through the beautiful countryside. There were rocky paths, coal hill climbs, and did we mention the mud??? We have participated in several Poker Runs to date, and, in our minds, what sets Good Intent ahead of the rest is their attitude. These guys have a “can do” attitude that was refreshing to see. Coupled with their hospitality, you have one heck of an event! Our hats go off to all the guys and gals at Good Intent Hose Company in Llewellyn, Pa., for throwing one of the best off-road poker runs we’ve ever attended! Keep up the great work, and we wish all of you many more successful events!

OFF THE SHELF - RZ Masks This past issue led us to the Fisher’s ATV Family Reunion at Rock Run Recreation Park in Patton, Pa. While there, we ran into the guys from RZ Masks. What a neat idea, a mask built for the off-road enthusiast to allow them to breathe clean air on all those hot, dusty days of summer. So, of course, we had our questions about it. Rather than giving us a bunch of answers, the guys said, “Here… you tell us.” So off we went into the summer dust wearing the RZ Masks. Our first ride turned out to be completely dusty. It was about mid-afternoon, and the side-by-

sides were tearing up the dirt roads leaving plumes of dust in their wake. In Rec Rider fashion, we headed right through the filthy air! Hey, what do you know, we could breathe! A few small adjustments around the nose region were necessary to keep my goggles from fogging. Now if only I could see, but that’s an entirely different issue. Anyway, the masks work just as they should. It does hinder your breathing slightly, causing you to breathe a little harder, but the air is clean, and clean air is a key ingredient to good health. Now as for fit and comfort, we personally thought they could use a little improvement. It seemed a little awkward at first; of course, never wearing one might have had us spoiled, but our lungs thought they fit just fine! Coal Bucket Race • www.lm4w.org Established in May of 1970, Line Mountain 4-Wheelers is a nonprofit organization of approximately 500 members who organize, promote, and participate in off-road racing events each year. The off-road racing events take place in the Appalachian Mountains of Dornsife, Pennsylvania. The first event was held in 1971, when approximately 23 vehicles and a few motorcycles entered the race on a seven-mile course through the woods. Gaining in popularity through the years, more and more competitors entered the race, and more events were held annually. Today, there are three annual events, which include the 3½-Miler in June, the Coal Bucket Race in July, and the renowned 7-Miler in September. Recently, a points system was introduced. A competitor earns points for each of the three races, with a monetary payout to the top 20 competitors. Competitors can expect to compete against 120 to 150 other competitors. Classes include 4x4s, buggies, ATVs, motorcycles, and UTVs. Rec Rider was there for their Coal Bucket Race this year, and what a hoot it was. Trucks, buggies, ATVs and bikes lined the pit areas just waiting for their turn on the course. The bikes, side-by-sides, and ATVs race in the morning, with trucks and buggies in the afternoon. Depending on class, racers leave at one to one and a half minute intervals to get their shot on the course. The morning race was six laps, and the afternoon race was ten. As you can imagine, things can get a little crowded out there, especially when you cut close to 120 trucks loose a minute and a half apart. Not all are on the course at the same time, as the racers that leave first actually finish before the last vehicle enters the race. There are overall and class times, with winners being determined by the fastest man or woman around the course. With black-covered faces, And hard-calloused hands, We work the dark tunnels, Unable to stand. To labour and toil, as we harvest the coals, We silently pray, “Lord, please harvest our souls.”

On August 24th, 2012, Rausch Creek Off-Road Park launched its Adventure Rides with a Coal Mine Tour. With a Jeep Wrangler, a Comanche, a Range Rover and a Jeep Cherokee, we set off to explore several of the green-rated trails that Rausch Creek has to offer. Our group’s first destination was known as the “stables”. After carefully exploring this mysterious location, it was on to the Tower City Tunnel Entrance. What a great spot for pictures! We were amazed at the temperature drop that was coming from inside this drift mine; I should have brought a jacket! A short drive along the trail, there was the Brookside Tunnel Entrance. The group learned about the 18 miners that lost their lives in the early 1900s when an explosion took place in the mine. The next stop on our tour was the Airshaft for the Porter Tunnels. With flashlights and taking extra precaution, our group carefully explored and learned about the mechanics of the airshaft. After a busy morning of trail riding, we were getting hungry, so to the lunch spot we went! Now, not everybody can say that they had lunch in a “stripping pit,” but we can! A perfect example of open surface mining, this area known as “the Quarry” is where rock had been blasted away to expose large areas of coal. The coal was then removed, leaving behind a large hole, AKA the “Stripping Pit.” It made a perfect place to break for lunch. After exploring the quarry and taking some pictures, it was on to Little Buck Coal, where our group was fortunate enough to see and talk with the coal miners in person! We learned about different types of coal and what it is used for and how the miners work underground on their hands and knees for hours on end! One of the miners also explained to us that this coal mine is a family tradition; his brothers and father also work at this facility. As we were leaving the mine, this Coal Miner’s Prayer was on the back of one of the workers’ vehicles. Our day was wrapping up, but not without two more stops. The remains of the Lincoln Colliery were next, and it certainly is not very impressive today, but to see pictures of what it looked like back in the 1900s, it was fantastic. And we learned that the Lincoln Colliery produced 1,200 tons of coal per day in the 1920s….that is A LOT of coal in your stocking! The last stop on our tour was the East Franklin Tunnel. With flashlights in hand, we shined our lights down the tunnel and imagined what it must have looked like back in its prime. Our group headed back then to the Rausch Creek parking lot, where we said goodbye to the new friends we had made. A good time was had by all! ATV Traction Bayview Riding Area www.atvtraction.org
Bayview ORV is a US Army Corps of Engineers project offering 12 miles of off road trails. It is federal property and not owned by the state, which means that motorcycles are also allowed on the trail system. Motorcycles are not allowed on state trails in Pennsylvania because they do not have registration or insurance. Unfortunately, we are getting this information to you too late to enjoy this season, but please keep it on your list for next year. Bayview ORV opens the Friday before Memorial Day and closes the last Sunday in September, which is the same schedule that the state trails and ANF operate by. ATV Traction Inc. was founded by a group of concerned riders in Erie County in 2001. The organization is comprised of ATV riders and business owners whose livelihood depends on ATV related sales and those concerned with promoting a positive future for ATV recreation. ATV Traction is registered as a non-profit corporation in Pa. ATV Traction has grown to become one of Pennsylvania’s largest and most influential ATV organizations. The club works with local communities, the Allegheny National Forest, the DCNR and now the PAOHV whenever possible. Many members come from communities in Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, and West Virginia. We have Pennsylvania chapters in Erie, McKean, Venango and Mercer counties, and we’ve currently expanded into Ohio by forming a chapter in Ashtabula County. We have five trails at our access. These trails are open only to club members and are open only at the owners’ discretion. Trails are closed during hunting season and when trail degradation is at its highest, which is from October though the end of January. Thank You and Ride Safe,

Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival The Jeeps invade downtown Butler.
Big Butler Fair Grounds, Prospect, PA August 10-12, 2012 Close to 1,500 Jeeps Invade Butler, Pa., on Aug. 10 for the Jeep Invasion! One thousand four hundred eighty-one Jeeps invaded the City of Butler (home of the first Jeep) to kick off the second annual Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival on Friday, Aug. 10. The Jeep Invasion resembles a street party with the streets and nearby parking lots filled with Jeeps of every make, model and year. The event kicked off at 6 p.m. and was sponsored by Butler Health System. Activities continued throughout the weekend, with participants coming from 25 states Butler, PA – as well as Canada home of the first Jeep. and Australia.

John-Michael has been an accomplished motocross rider since he was 10 years old. Now he spends his time riding with his parents, John and Sue, and his son, Nico. Q. Who do you typically ride with? A. Typically we ride together, all three generations. Q. Tell us about your quads. A. Polaris Sportsman 400, Polaris 330 ATP, Polaris Scrambler, Honda 250. Q. What is unusual or unique about your quad? A. Nico likes to use his Honda sport quad to go fast on the trails. Q. What part do you like best about this riding area? A. The trails are easy, awesome, and marked well. Q. Do you ride with any ATV clubs, and if so which ones? A. Valley ATV Club.

The weather gods were with us again on August 26 for round 10 of the Pennsylvania State Championship Hare Scramble Series. A few patchy clouds, 85 degrees and a light breeze welcomed everyone to the track “Down by the River.” The track was almost as perfect as it was in June. There was some sand, some soggy soil, some dust, and a lot of perfect dirt. The Youth and Pee Wee classes went off without a hitch, and Motorcycles and Quads started just about on time. For myself, after doing a little track patrol for the little (but faster than me) quads, I went to the scoring tents for the first couple of laps of the big bikes, and holy cow, did we have some fast guys. On the last lap there was one guy who looked like he was trying to cut the track by a couple of feet, but if you see the attached picture, it did not work out too well for him. After getting the bike out and doing a sweep lap, the track was good to go for the quads. There were a couple of breakdowns for the quads, but they all did a great job of staying out of the water. At press time I do not have the exact number of entrants, but we appeared to have about the same amount of youth, mini and peewee riders, a couple more big bikes, and a couple less quads. The summer of 2012, with its great track conditions and great weather, has been a good year for the Back Mountain Enduro Riders supporting the sport of motorcycling, which is why we do what we do. We are really looking forward to our next two events this year, our ECEA Hare Scramble being held in Plymouth, Pa., at our track “Down by the River” on the weekend of October 20th and 21st, and our annual Dual Sport ride, The Lawton 100, in Lawton, Pa., on September 23th. The Dual Sport ride is an awesome event for Dual Sport and Adventure riders. It is a Big Bike friendly, two loop event with around 50 miles of dirt roads and trails in the morning, a stop for the included lunch, and another 50 miles in the afternoon. Power is transferred via shaft drive with push-button on-demand 2WD/4WD, transmission duties are handled by a tough automatic CVT (H-L-N-R-P) with differential lock, the front suspension receives an independent dual A-arm set-up with five-position adjustable pre-load oil-damped shocks, the rear suspension receives the same treatment plus the addition of a sway bar, a 25x8-12 front and 25x10-12 rear tire/wheel package aids in achieving a log-crossing 10.4 inches of ground clearance, the 4.42-gallon fuel tank will keep you on trail, and a hydraulic dual-disc front and shaft-mounted hydraulic disc rear brake system safely reels the entire package down from speed. The MXU 700i, available in black, green or red, comes outfitted with left and right topside (locking) fender storage, right rear under-fender storage, a 12v accessory outlet, a pre-wired winch mounting plate, and steel wheels. The MXU 700i LE, available in painted metallic silver, is further equipped from the factory with aluminum alloy wheels, a 3,000-lb. winch, and Kenda Bounty Hunter tires (26x9-14 front, 26x11-14 rear). Other highlights in KYMCO USA’s 2013 off-road product line include the completely redesigned MXU 500i and MXU 500i LE, as well as the specially equipped UXV 500i SP side-by-side vehicle.

The all-new MXU 500i ($7,499) and MXU 500i LE ($8,299) received a variety of updates and improvements, both in style and function. Powered by a fuel-injected 499cc DOHC 4-stroke 4-valve liquid-cooled engine developing 36hp, the two 500cc models feature the same new chassis and running gear components as the newly introduced 700cc models. The MXU 500i, available in black, green or red, comes outfitted with left and right topside (locking) fender storage, right rear under-fender storage, a 12v accessory outlet, a pre-wired winch mounting plate, and steel wheels. The MXU 500i LE, like its larger sibling, also comes in painted metallic silver and with aluminum alloy wheels, a 3,000-lb. winch, and Kenda Bounty Hunter tires (26x9-14 front, 26x11-14 rear).

A new addition to KYMCO’s side-by-side family of vehicles, the UXV 500i SP ($10,499) was designed to offer increased amenities to customers apt to use their UXV for recreational opportunities rather than utility purposes. Powered by KYMCO’s fuel-injected 499cc DOHC 4-stroke 4-valve liquid-cooled engine, the nimble UXV 500i SP further features push-button on-demand 2WD/4WD, an automatic CVT (H-L-N-R-P) with differential lock, an independent dual A-arm suspension fore and aft featuring high-performance fully adjustable oil-damped KAIFA shocks, hydraulic dual-disc front and shaft-mounted hydraulic disc rear brakes, and 26x914 front and 26x11-14 rear Kenda Bounty Hunter tires on aluminum alloy wheels. Fisher’s 5th Annual ATV Reunion Rock Run Recreation • Patton, PA • August 9-12, 2012 By: Jim Bull

In early August we made the trek to Rock Run Recreation near Altoona, Pa., to take part in Brian Fisher’s Family Reunion. Now I know what many of you think when your mom and dad tell you to not make any plans for next weekend, that you have that yearly family reunion you have to attend halfway across the state. I’ll also bet that if your family’s reunions are anything like mine were, you’re already looking for a couple different ways to break your leg so you don’t have to go. You know it’s going to be another horseshoe tournament that lasts three hours with cousins you barely know, and you’re going to have to take part in Aunt Clara’s broccoli sprout eating contest, and who is Aunt Clara related to anyhow? And the list goes on and on and on. As I packed up my little truck for this year’s annual reunion, however, I somehow knew that things were going to be a little different. Different how, you ask? Well, first off, I attended last year’s reunion, and I knew that there probably wasn’t going to be anybody there that I was related to. Second, I also knew that the Fish Crew had added an extra day of riding to this year’s party. Riding, oh yeah… this isn’t your typical family reunion. You see a few years back, Brian Fisher, host of the Fisher’s ATV World program that broadcasts on the Outdoor Channel, decided he wanted to have a get together for his fans to come and ride with him and his staff. The Fishers travel all over the country, and the world for that matter, riding their ATVs, then they bring that into living rooms all across America. Brian wanted some time to hang out with his loyal fans and do what he loves to do best and that’s to ride off-road. Hence, the “Family Reunion” was born. They hosted the first few reunions at a couple of different locations but the last several have taken place at the beautiful Rock Run Recreation facility in western Pennsylvania. Brian and his crew have taken to the spot, and it allows plenty of room for the thousands of riders that come here each year to have a grand old time. Events include a vendor midway; lots of big name entertainment; a quad boss showdown, which is an obstacle course run that’s timed with winners in different categories; and lots of food and fun. And did I mention riding? Four days of riding on over 150 miles of trails at Rock Run. Here’s the big kicker, oh yeah,

Ya Can’t Say “Play Ball” if Ya Don’t Have a TEAM! By Dick Lepley, Executive Director, PA OHV I took the time to sit back in front of the TV a few days ago in order to enjoy a bit of the action during the 66th edition of the Little League World Series (LLWS) as it unfolded in Williamsport, Pa. The tournament featured eight teams from the United States and eight teams from around the world. The series began as the brainchild of Williamsport baseball fan Carl Stotz, who founded the Little League in 1938. The first Little League World Series took place in 1947 following World War II when Stotz’s Maynard Midgets defeated their neighbors from nearby Lock Haven. So, why is an old motor head like me reciting baseball history amidst the pages of a magazine devoted to motorized recreation? Because what goes on in this small town in north central Pennsylvania strikes me as the very definition of the word “team,” and the LLWS strikes me as an excellent metaphor for motorized recreation. Baseball, at its heart, is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the ball. That’s all there is to it...except for the head game, and that part of the equation is very important. If you expect to win, you’ve got to get your head in the game. That’s true in baseball, in life, and in motorized recreation. Let me explain. A bat and a ball can do nothing until they’re in somebody’s hands. They are still useless until either the bat or the ball is passed on to somebody else, but even then it’s just an exercise between two enthusiasts. Additional teams are needed to play the game, as are folks to organize and promote the activity, get players to the games, handle equipment, train individuals to win, and attract a legion of fans to cheer teams on. And, there must be a passionate management team to drive the entire sport forward. Every single individual, both on and off the field, is an important part of the whole. That’s a team! The Little League World Series folks have it figured out, but motorized recreation does not.
Unlike the sixteen teams who made up the 66th LLWS in Williamsport, there are hundreds of thousands of motorized recreation enthusiasts in Pennsylvania, but unfortunately, only a small number of them are fighting to accomplish what every ATVer and dirt-biker should strive to do...legalize hundreds or thousands of miles of trails in the Keystone State...many of which are already on the ground. Here’s the deal...the folks in Williamsport understand the word TEAM. It’s more than the players. It’s the image and inspiration of Carl Stotz, whose decades old vision continues to shape the Little League World Series. It’s the teams, coaches, support staff, the stars, and the bench sitters. It’s the fans who go along for the “home run ride,” and it’s the many people who avidly embrace the event because they collectively enjoy the excitement and the economic benefits. PaOHV understands the game, and so do their club, corporate, national affiliates and individual members, but that’s not enough to make an Access Army. In reality, motorized recreation is a “team” sport, and if you aren’t on the team, we all stand to lose. Yes, we all have favorite places to ride and friends we ride with, but if we don’t understand the big picture, “Team Anti Motorized” will slowly but surely relegate our ATVs and dirt bikes to eBay listings and newspaper classifieds. And our memories of off-road riding will become fading images in photo albums and iPhone video captures. All of us at PaOHV have a vision. We realize that Pennsylvania offers extraordinary opportunities that can rival areas like Hatfield McCoy in West Virginia and elsewhere. We realize that our sport can energize economies in small towns surrounded by some of the finest geography on earth, and we understand that motorized recreation is a proven economic engine just waiting to contribute more to the communities that support it. And, we have the power to

support your efforts at the local level as you and others create an army that can’t be ignored. It’s very simple...you are either the BALL or the BAT. You can smack motorized recreation out of the park, or you can be beat down by those who want to ban us from the very lands that belong to all of us. Early August took us to Honesdale, PA, for the annual fundraiser for the NEP Sno Trails Club. For $20, riders could have unlimited radar runs on their sleds, competing for a first-place trophy and bragging rights in their respective classes. The club was formed in the early 1990s and has up to 1,800 members in any particular year. They operate just over 200 miles of trails that private landowners open up to snowmobile use only each winter. Today’s event brought out close to 150 riders and lots more spectators. The fastest time of the day, 98 mph, was laid down by Steve Ryder from the WakPak Racing camp competing in the open class. The club is offering a snowmobile raffle, and you can contact them to purchase tickets at nepsnotrails@gmail.com, or see them at the PA Powersports Show in Lebanon, P,A in late October. The club would like to thank all who attended.

WHERE TO RIDE - ATV Trails on State Forest Land SUMMER AND WINTER TRAILS
4 - Centre County
These trails are open during the summer and winter seasons. The summer season runs from the Friday before Memorial Day through the last full weekend in September. The winter season runs from the day following the last day of the regular or extended antlerless deer season as established by the Game Commission through the following April 1. There are some trails that remain closed until after the late muzzleloader season. Please check with the individual forest district to see when the trails will open for the winter season.

The Bloody Skillet ATV riding area, located in Centre County, consists of 37 trail miles (Phase 1 & 2) and is accessed from SR 144 approximately 18 1/2 miles north of Snow Shoe. Turn right onto DeHaas Road and travel 5 miles south to the Northern Terminus Trailhead. 36 miles of summer trail. During the winter season the trail system is expanded to 42 miles by using some dirt roads that are gated during the winter. Part of the trail system is shared with snowmobiles when there is sufficient snowfall. The trail is located between Big Flat and Pine Grove Furnace State Park. Access to these are from parking lots located at Big Flat along Shippensburg Road about 1-1/4 miles north of its intersection with Route 233 and on Piney Mountain along Bendersville Road south of Pine Grove Furnace State Park. 17 miles of summer and winter trail. Trails are located near Haneyville and include the Button Road and a network of wooded trails built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Access to the trail is from Lyman Run State Park, on SR 44 north of Cherry Springs, or the intersection of Rock Run Road and the Ridge Trail (ATV trail). State Game Lands ATVs are not permitted on State Game Lands except those used by disabled hunters.
Registration, Titling and Insuring Your ATV Who must register and title? All ATVs in Pennsylvania, except ATVs used solely for business or agricultural purposes, need to be registered and titled with DCNR. ATVs used in Pennsylvania must be registered and titled with DCNR’s Snowmobile/ ATV Section. The ATV registration and titling fees are NOT user fees for the privilege of using trails on stateowned land. The fees provide funding to administer the program, maintain trails in DCNR-managed parks and forests, and provide grants to profit and nonprofit organizations for developing additional riding opportunities.
Two Types Of Registrations Apply: •

Registration For ATVs used anywhere off of your own property or property leased by you, such as designated State Forest trails. $20 fee every two years Limited Registration For ATVs used solely on your own land or land leased by you. Free registration -No expiration, unless ownership of vehicle changes
Plates and Decals An ATV owner will be issued a registration plate for the vehicle. An expiration sticker to be affixed to the plate will be issued for standard registrations. Liability Insurance If you are using your ATV solely on land owned or leased by you, you are not required to get liability insurance. All other riders must carry liability insurance. Proof of that insurance must be carried with you when you ride. There are no minimum requirements or coverage standards established by DCNR or the Snowmobile/ATV Law for the liability insurance.

The federally-operated Allegheny National Forest has more than 100 miles of ATV trails. ATV trail season runs from the Friday before Memorial Day through the last Sunday in September. Winter season is from December 20 to April 1. Contact the Allegheny National Forest Supervisor’s Office, P.O. Box 847, 222 Liberty Street, Warren, PA 16365, (814) 723-5150. Effective July 1, 2002, the Allegheny National Forest implemented the Fee Demo Program for ATV and motorized bike trails. An annual $35 permit fee is required, and can be purchased from any Allegheny National Forest office, and some local vendors, or online at www.fs.fed.us/r9/allegheny.
Seven Mountains Ramble (Dual Sport Licensed Motorcycles) - Riding areas are located in portions of Mifflin, Snyder and Union Counties in the Bald Eagle Forest. Loop 1 starts at the 7 Mountains Campground, located just south of Potters Mill or west of Milroy on Route 22/322. Compensation for Campground owner for parking strongly recommended. Proceed on Sand Mountain road to the trailhead at Ground Oak trail. The loop is about 30 miles long. Last October the Rec Rider Crew was lucky enough to embark on a journey to Tri-County ATV Club. What we didn’t include in last year’s article was the story behind their Haunted Trail Ride. It was a blast, and it all started with everyone lining up in groups at the club house where they had turned their club house from a pole barn into a haunted concession stand! Outside, quads and side by sides were lining up in order to experience this awesome twist on a haunted attraction. While waiting, you could also enjoy a movie and food! What better way to start things off then to have a screening of one of the best original scary movies ever, “Poltergeist.” So here we are, on our quads, in the middle of a dark field watching scary movies. This is only the beginning of the night and already we’re a bit spooked. Now it’s our turn to take our trip through the dark forest that Tri-County has taken from a family friendly riding park into a dark, haunted, thrill ride. Along the way we encounter everything from pitch black tunnels filled with ghosts and ghouls to fully combat-ready soldiers firing machine guns through the night. They really did a great job on not only making it a fun ride, but also leaving you with suspense for what’s around the next corner! Once the entire haunted course was finished, they gave you the option of a long, challenging ride back to camp or the short and simple way. As most of you know, the Rec Rider Crew did not think twice about that one. Off we went through the long, hard trail. It was so neat being able to ride the park at night. Night time adds such a unique dynamic to the riding experience, but the trail was no piece of cake. After having the quad stuck in mud and hanging the side by side up on some logs, we finally popped out back at the club house. Waiting for us was hot chocolate, coffee, and fresh popcorn to enjoy the movie. This was a great experience. If Halloween is one of your favorite holidays, and you enjoy riding, then you have to check this out! Make your way out to Tri-County in October and have yourself a blast. Pennridge ATV Club is located in central Bucks County and was formed in 2003 by a few riders looking for more people to ride with. After a few years, the club has grown to over 70 members aging from 8 to 60 years old, with new members joining every year. Every year, the group does a Memorial weekend event where participating families go on a camping trip to different locations such as Snow Shoe Rails to Trails and Potter County Campground. Riding is the main dish, but they mix it up with some fishing as well. This past July, a few members hit SSRT for a three-day weekend. They rented a house close to the trail head. The riding was great, and after 200 miles of riding they were ready for a shower. August is a trip to the Alleghenies staying at the forest lodge.
