Letter from the Editor

T JOIN HE

Happy April everybody. Welcome back to the latest and greatest issue of Rec Rider Magazine. I know I’ve been talking about it in the last few issues, but I think it’s safe to say that spring has finally sprung. I know, it may come back to haunt me, but I’m willing to take the chance. I can say for sure that the race season has kicked off here in our region. The ATV rides have been firing up, and those crazy guys in their Jeeps, well they never stopped playing (See MAFWDA’s article inside). In this issue you’ll find some season opening harescramble and motocross action. A great article from Chas McHenry on getting ready for the season is included, and Sprocket is back with a snowmobile trip to Montana. As we roll into the new year we have big plans in the works. Expect to see some of the old, but also expect to see some changes. We’ll be adding some new regular features this year, including the “JR wRECking crew,” which will highlight our young ones out on the trail. We’ll also have a new trail chow feature (named to be determined) featuring easy and delicious foods to enjoy while riding and camping. In addition, we’ll be stepping up our coverage for our full sized brethren along with increasing our already current coverage that you’ve all come to know and love. We thank you all for continuing your support through the off season. As always Rec Rider is complimentary at hundreds of locations, and home delivery is available if you prefer. You can sign up by calling in, logging in or just by saying hi at an event. All our contact info is listed below. You can also stay up to date between issues on our website and while there sign up for our new email newsletter. Well, thanks again for reading, and we’ll see you all out on the trail.

Middle Atlantic Four Wheel Drive Association (MAFWDA) Valentine's Weekend Snow Run

By: Larry Pope, President MAFWDA (www.mafwda.org) Photos By: Berna Pope, Cherie Taylor, and Mike & Katie DeChristopher Preston Stevens, Director of Conservation/Land Use MAFWDA, organized and led this great adventure in Garrett County, Md. Preston made this happen through his professional relationship with the good folks at the Savage River State Forest and The Casselman Inn in Grantsville, Md. Access to the trails was by exception and special permission granted by the Savage River State Forest Manager for this particular event only. The majority of the participants lodged at The Casselman Inn. Berna and I headed west Friday around noon, when the temperature was 45 degrees with a clear sky. The previous couple of days we had suffered the snow and ice storm that had moved through. We received about 18 inches of snow; however western Maryland, specifically Garrett County, received about two feet of new snow. Yes, new snow, as they already had around two feet on the ground. Our trip west was without incident, and the roads were clear and dry. We pulled up to The Casselman Inn, where we would be staying, at 3 pm. The thermometer was reading 32 degrees, and the wind blowing cut straight through you. Daniel Grant, an English engineer from whom Grantville derives its name and owner of the famous Fountain Inn in Baltimore, was the original owner of a piece of land called Cornucopia. The parcel included much of today’s Grantsville, at an elevation of 2,300 feet, as well as one thousand acres around town. The Casselman Inn was opened in 1842 by Solomon Sterner and was one of several inns on the National Trail providing lodging and meals for the stage coaches, covered wagons, drovers, and riders that made the Old Pike the busiest thoroughfare crossing the mountains of western Maryland. In the 172 year history of the inn it has been called Sterner House, Drovers’ Inn, Farmers’ Hotel, Dorsey’s Hotel, and The Casselman Hotel and Restaurant. Sterner built the Casselman of brick, which was handmade and burnt on the land. A fireplace was built in each room to furnish heat and cooking facilities for the original building. The Dorseys added a kitchen in 1903 during their ownership. The Miller family assumed ownership in 1964. Business soon outgrew the facilities and an antique shop, bake shop, 40-room motel, and new 125-seat dining room were added in 1973. The Casselman is a secondgeneration ownership and operation and is one of the most historic landmarks in western Maryland. And, in my opinion, it has the best homemade food in that part of the county. Saturday morning we found it had snowed another 8 to 10 inches

overnight. After breakfast, and what a breakfast (mmm good!), everyone lined up their rigs on the road behind the motel. Preston conducted a drivers’ meeting and laid out the “plan” for the day. When this was complete, we headed west on Alternate U.S. Route 40 (Main Street) to the trail head Preston had decided to use the night before. U.S. 40 is the most historic road crossing over the Appalachian Mountains. The road was originally an Indian trail known as Nemacolin’s Path; it then became a military road built by the troops of British General Braddock. Called Braddock’s Road, the General and his troops marched west in 1755 from Fort Cumberland on their way to the ill-fated expedition to Fort Duquesue during the French and Indian War. For the next 25 years the rough military road was the main thoroughfare connecting the East with the Ohio Valley. Known for years as The Old National Trail, it was later designated as U.S. Route 40. U.S. 40 skirts Grantsville by following I-68; but the National Road runs right through town as Main Street and Alt. U.S. 40. Presidents-elect Andrew Jackson, William Henry Harrison, James K. Polk and Zachary Taylor all traveled to Washington, D.C., via the National Road. The line of rigs arrived at the trail head in no time since it was a short 5 miles from town. The fun began as soon as Preston entered the trail - out came the recovery strap and winch cable. We all eventually got off the road onto the trail. The snow was deep; how deep you ask? Well, deep. I’ll have to refer you to the photos but I would guess at least 3 feet and maybe 4 in places. Plus, it snowed most of the time we were on the trail. The temperature never got above 27 degrees. Everyone was making good headway, with Preston blazing the trail ahead of us in his XJ. When we got to one point, a bend in the trail, the fun really started. Three of us got stuck and stuck deep. Mike DeChristopher finally had enough and pulled out the tire chains and put them on the CJ-3A. He never got stuck again and had become the official recovery dude, along with one of the other Jeeps. As we continued, inch by inch, foot by foot, further into the forest, we noticed a Green 3/4-ton Dodge Ram had joined us. No one knew who this guy was, and he sure was not part of our group. He came up to us with his rig and then decided he would blaze his own route around our line of rigs. He wasn’t very successful other than digging ruts in and on Continued on Pg. 8 Out on the trail.

On the way to the trailhead.

(MAFWDA) Valentine's Weekend Snow Run the side of the trail. The only reason I am writing about this idiot is to show there are individuals out there with built up rigs that don’t have a clue how to drive on a trail. It’s irresponsible people like this guy that ruins it for our hobby and the off-road community as a whole. With that said, he was reported to the MD DNR and hopefully they catch him one day. OK, enough about that guy. As it turns out as we got further down the trail everyone eventually got stuck in the snow. Well, with the exception of John Tabor in his YJ. He was a recovery guy also. It was at this point as I was attempting to extract a 4Runner from the deep snow when there was this loud sound of something exploding under my rig. One of the guys at the same time said, “What was that?” We soon found out; I had just exploded the left front axle U Joint and yoke on both ends of the axle shaft. It was ugly. Only one itty bitty piece of the U Joint was found, it had totally disintegrated. So, I was toast at that point and couldn’t go any further on the trail. Mike put a bungee cord around the axle end, so we could get the JK turned around on the trail without causing much more damage. Plus, it helped to show the damage a little better for those taking pictures. Mike in his CJ-3A went on ahead of us to see how the trail looked and how much deeper the snow may be. Preston and I were considering leaving the JK there, and Berna and I would ride with someone else for the rest of the day. Hopefully, we would pick it up on the way out. Mike returned and said the snow got deeper, plus the trail began going downhill, meaning we would have to go uphill on the return trip. Hmmm, uphill and deep snow, and it had taken us 4 hours to cover 3/4 mile of trail as it was. So, getting everyone turned around, we came to a decision and headed back to the trail head. We did have fun getting to the point where we were. As Preston said, we weren’t going to let some sour lemons spoil the fun. We eventually got everyone turned around and made it back to the road. A recovery strap was hooked to the front of my JK for assistance since I only had two wheel drive and in case we encountered more deep snow going out to the road. Preston kept a slow pace so I could nurse the JK back to the motel without causing further damage. We went off-roading in three or more feet of snow. Are we “normal” or “nuts”? And the survey says?!! Normal. Once we were back, folks headed for The Casselman for lunch, except me and John. John gave me a ride to the CARQUEST store in town to see if they might have an axle shaft assembly. Nope. Neither did the NAPA

Half the fun is getting stuck.

Continued from page 6

store. John said he had an idea. We went to the True Value hardware store to look for a plumbing test plug. We found them, so I bought a 1 1/2 inch and a 2 inch plug because we weren’t sure of the actual diameter of the axle housing tube. These plugs have a metal circular flange on top with rubber below the flange and a bolt with a wing nut running through the middle. Place the plug in an open end of a pipe and turn the wing nut to expand the rubber to make a seal and plug the pipe. Ingenious, we thought, but will it work? We returned to the motel, and John went to get something to eat. Preston planned to take everyone on a tour of the back roads of the county after lunch. So Berna and I jumped in a rig with another couple for the afternoon ride. It was a nice ride, but not as nice as it could have been driving my own rig. We headed down MD Rt. 495, through Swanton, Md., to a road that led through Deer Park, Md. Yes, where the Deer Park bottled water comes from. The logo on the bottle was the original logo of the once famous Deer Park Hotel. Several presidents and famous people stayed there before the hotel was lost to a fire. The caravan continued down the often snow-covered back roads of Garrett County to the access road of the Potomac State Forest, where a local farmer had cut a path through the snow, just about as wide as a Jeep, or so it seemed. It went to a point to where the road forks, where we all turned around. In the process, Preston, along with another rig, managed to get hung up in the deep snow. That just added to the fun. We went out by going through the historic mining town of Steyer, Md., that is right along the upper Potomac River. The scenery was awesome. We returned to the motel around 6 p.m., and we all planned to meet at Casselman’s for dinner. After dinner everyone met in the common area of the motel and had a social gathering to talk about the day’s adventure or some other “fish story.” I don’t know what time the party broke up but my happy butt left at 9 p.m. I was wore out and worried about whether the JK was fixable to get home. John and John Tabor Jr. (I really don’t know if he is a junior, I call him that because it makes writing this easier) said they would help with the fix at 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning. Sunday morning was cold, 17 degrees, and right on time John and John Jr. pulled up in front of our motel room. I was anxious to see if the fix for the axle John had designed would actually work. If you haven’t been paying attention so far now is the time to start because here comes a temporary fix for a busted axle so you can get home. Some may already Continued on Pg. 9 Exploded axle shaft assembly.

know this trick, but I didn’t and to me John was thinking outside the box on this one. After the guys had pulled the front tire and hub assembly off, the axle just simply slid out. John then inserted the 1 1/2 inch test plug into the axle housing, tightened the wing nut, and the axle tube was sealed. This fix allows the wheel end of the axle shaft assembly to spin freely and keeps the differential fluid in the pumpkin. It only took about 30 minutes for the entire process. After all was said and done, everyone had a great time, even if we only traveled 3/4 of a mile on the trail in four hours. Off-roading is about having fun, being with friends or making new friends, and being responsible while doing it. Not like the jerk with the Dodge. It’s like meeting someone for the first time on a ride, and they help whoever needs help. I offered to pay John and John Jr. for doing the work for the temporary fix. Naturally, being the good people they are, they denied any payment. All they asked was that I “pay it forward.” That I will do and without hesitation. So if you are ever on a trail ride and I am along and you explode a front axle shaft U Joint and yoke on a Jeep, I’ll help you fix it. I now have four plumbing test plugs in my tool bag just in case. We made the 170-mile trip home Sunday just fine with no problems at all. Not bad for a $5 plug. I think we took the lemons Preston referred to and made lemonade. It was fun, and I hope we get to do another snow run next year.

March Is on Fire With the Start of the ECEA Harescramble and Enduro Season Round #1 of the Championship Harescramble Series Tri County Sportsman

By: Joann Hauser March was on fire for the ECEA (East Coast Harescrambe & Enduro Association) with a packed month of racing on tap. On March 1and 2, round one of the ECEA Championship Harescramble series took place in South Jersey in Port Elizabeth, hosted by Tri-County Sportsman’s Club. This was voted Harescramble of the Year by the riders last year, and organizers put on another outstanding event this year. Approximately 600 riders showed up over the two-day event featuring ECEA, NEOC, motocross, and enduro riders. Saturday, which was day one and round one of the Fast KIDS Championship Series, went off with a great start. The Pee-Wees were the first to hit the track, with Allen Adkins getting the overall win with Joseph Rainone second and Julian Wojck third. The 65cc were next up, with the overall win going to Jaden Palmer followed by Kyle Grenewicz and Ryan Gribbin. Last to hit the track on Saturday was the youth division. Taking the overall win was Jeremy Biggs followed by Bobby Mccafferty Jr. and Kyle Tino. Conditions for the Fast Kidz between the trail and track were ideal, and the weather was perfect. Sunday soon approached with fair weather to start, and track and trail conditions were prime for the morning racers, with the overall win going to Jarrod Appleby. The women’s class had nine riders, which was great to see. Megan Horseman took the win with second Megan Horseman wins the women’s division.

Division winners in the following classes were School Boy - Jacob Johnson, C-SR - James Prasek, Masters - John Lafferty, Sportmans - Ben Smith, and Gold Master - Robert Hoover. Soon up to race was the main event with weather conditions holding and track and trail conditions deteriorating. There were 244 riders who hit the trails and track for the main with Tegan Robert Temple taking the win followed by Wallace Palmer and Kyle McDonal. Ethan Walter and Brendan Riordan rounded out the top five.. Overall in the main event for A-Class - Joesph Ferraro , A-SR Daniel Nenstiel, A-SSR - Pat Emmons, A-Vet - Andrew Tsakanikas, and B-Class Christian Crum. It’s going to be another great season of racing for all ages. Thank you, Tri-County Sportmans Club, for another great event to start the year, as well as to all the sponsors that are helping to make this year an even better year than last. Upcoming Rides – New York By Mike Petrone What's up, fellow off-road riders? It's Mike Petrone (a.k.a. Mudfreak), and here is my list of upcoming ATV events over the next few months. The first event coming up is the 2014 Spring Charity Ride on Saturday, April 26, hosted by Sullivan County ATV Association. This ride is awesome in the spring weather; it can't be missed. In my previous article, I mentioned that SCATVA always puts together a great trail to ride on, which is all you need to have a good time! Proceeds from the ride are donated to local families with special needs children. Let's talk about the ride itself. Spring riding is my favorite since there is a lot more to do this time of year after the snow melts. My favorite part? The mud holes! You can rip up the trails faster and play in the river without freezing. It's also easier to hang out longer with fellow ATV riders after the ride when the weather is warmer. In addition, the view is spectacular in the springtime. It's about a 30-plus-mile ride, but you can finish within two and a half hours. There is usually even enough time to go back out for a ride or two. Afterward, you can hit up the ATV track for loops and jumps. Then, after working up an appetite, stop at Mr. Willy's (3695 Route 42, Monticello, N.Y.) for some “manly food” and company. What else can you ask for? Another event coming up is Tar Hollow ATV Ride on Tar Hollow Road in Hancock, N.Y. This ride will take place on Saturday, June 1. These events are hosted twice per year by three gentlemen who volunteer their time to make rides happen: Steve Titus,

Steve Simpson, and Steve Paul. I did this ride last October, and it was absolutely awesome! My experience with the crew at Tar Hollow was particularly great. When I pulled up to the gate, one of the three Steves greeted me with a smile, and right off the bat, I felt like I was home. That action alone made me want to come back. If anyone had a question about anything, the Steves were there to answer it with no hesitation. The event had such a great turnout that they decided to do two rides per year. To do so, Steve Simpson approached Art Tompkins, the man who owns the 2,500 acres of property, and asked him if he would open up his property to ATV and UTV rides. Art agreed, as long as the Steves do all the promoting and organizing. As a result, the proceeds from the event go to maintaining his property! Let's talk about this ride. Throughout the ride, I came across elevation changes, mud, and some awesome technical sections. The course consisted of a large oneway loop of approximately 20 miles and additional “hero loops." The "hero loops" are a great way to challenge a rider's experience. You can make multiple runs if you want. The trails are mostly woods and logging roads; there’s no coal dust, and that a good thing. That’s all for now. Stay tuned for updates and pictures from the 2014 Spring Charity Ride and the Tar Hollow ATV Ride in the coming weeks! Contact us on Twitter @atvfreaks.

AWRCS Banquet 2013

Story By: Troy Hill • Photos By: Jim Rounce Photography The 2013 AWRCS banquet was held at the Clarion Hotel in Tarentum, Pa., on February 22 and was a roaring success. With a record crowd of 563 in attendance, including racers, family and friends, it was about the same number who comes out to an event to compete. It was a very family friendly event and was enjoyed by all. Humor and relaxation were the theme. Racers were interviewed by master announcer Ray Santi. Anyone who is familiar with the series will recognize his professional and knowledgeable skills. Awards were handed out for each and every class, as it should be. Everyone who races knows the effort that is put forth to follow the series or even to run one or two events. Class awards prepared by 343 Graphics in a presentation format were presented to nearly everyone who competed in the series and can be hung with pride by the finishers. First or tenth, individuals were presented with a keepsake signboard size picture of themselves in action thanks to 343’s efforts. 343 Graphics is both a series sponsor and racer. Speaking of sponsors, there was $50,000 dollars of cash and prizes handed out during the night. The series sponsors and contingencies were paid out by Yamaha, Can Am, Scott Goggles, Answer Racing, MSR, Tucker Rocky, Kenda Tires, VP Fuels and FCR Suspension. Shane Watts also deserves a tip of the hat as he has run several schools in conjunction with the AWRCS series. The great thing about this series is there is a class for everyone. Space allowed here will not permit listing of each and every racer competing in this highly popular and professionally run series. The season results for each and every class and those competing can be found online. Simply go to http://www.awrcs.com for the results of the 2013 series and the 2014 series schedule. We hope to see you there.

The ladies shared the stage as well.

Lots of swag was given away, lots and lots of swag.

Having some fun at the banquet.

Trail boss and series sponsor Steve Stiller.

Race announcer Ray Santi was in attendance.

By: Al Sain 2013 was another good year for the Indian Creek Valley ATV Club. We continue to grow our membership, ending the year with 310 members. We purchased a 33HP Kubota tractor that allows us to mow the parking area in less time and do some nice work on the trails. We added a new 42-foot storage trailer to house the tractor. That allowed us to clean up the office trailer and organize the tool shed.

Our two open houses helped grow the club and generate funds to help with the equipment and trail work. First, we hired a dozer to clean up some of the rocky sections of our green trails. Then we purchased a couple ATV trailers and several truckloads of gravel to fill in some of the nuisance mud holes. Of course, we also kept up with the briars, using four weed whackers with hedge trimmer attachments.

One of the great features of our club is our trips to other riding areas. In 2013, our members had out-of-state trips to Hatfield-McCoy, Tenn., as well as to Ohio. In Pennsylvania, the club went to Rock Run a couple times, Mines & Meadows, Lost Trails ATV Park, and Allegheny National Forest. These trips are a great opportunity for our members to go to a new place with friends who have been there before. The out-of-state trips are a great chance to ride different trails and have some fun with guys who enjoy the sport.

In 2014, we plan to host our two usual open houses in June and September, and we are planning trips to Michigan, Wisconsin, and Missouri. We are also increasing our involvement in the state by joining PaOHV. As much as we want to grow our club with more land, the legal issues are a big hurdle. Hopefully, this year will be a turning point for PaOHV and a chance for all clubs to grow the legal trails in PA.

ATV Community Seeks “CLARITY AND TRANSPARENCY in Snowmobile/ATV Fund Legislation By: Fred Brown

House Bill 2047 introduced by Rep. Marty Causer would require that the state snowmobile ATV fund be split into two separate accounts, one to track ATV income and expenditures and the other to track snowmobile income and expenditures. G

VIKIN

Fueled by concerns of “clarity and transparency, PAOHV requested the introduction of this bill. I have tracked the income and expenses of this fund for more than 10 years with the help of Representative Causer and before him, Representative Sam Rohr. The concern was that ATV users were getting the short end of the investment stick. The numbers on their face would seem to indicate that. We are hopeful that when this issue is reviewed and studied by the House Tourism and Recreational Development Committee we will get a clearer picture as to how DCNR invests the funds, not only for the edification of the ATV community but for snowmobilers as well. By way of example, for fiscal year 2012–2013 the income from ATV registrations alone totaled $2,370,269, while during the same period of time snowmobile income logged in at $505,938. During the same timeframe ATV registrations averaged about 157,000 and snowmobile registrations were approximately 37,000. DCNR Secretary Ellen Ferretti in response to Representative Marty’s inquiry responded by saying, While it can technically be split into independent units, DCNR feels this would unnecessarily increase costs and budgetary complexity without helping to advance the department's support for either the snowmobiling or ATV communities. The registration process for both vehicle types is handled by a unified team of employees and singular computerized registration system. Splitting snowmobile and ATV income and expenditures into two separate restricted accounts, with the corresponding need to track employee time and billing to either account, would only increase administrative costs while not creating any significant value. Likewise, time accounting and billing of forestry staff supported by these revenues would create additional unneeded costs. Furthermore, accounting for sales tax collection would necessitate adding additional administrative work to ensure that tax is properly collected and allocated into the appropriate funds rather than a single account, again adding time and cost to what is currently an efficient system. While I can’t say that I agree with the Secretary’s conclusion it would seem to me out of abundance of fairness for the dollars invested by both groups that separate accounting and a pay-as-you-go system would bring about the clarity and transparency sought by the ATV community and Representative Causer. Representative Causer deserves our thanks and appreciation for his efforts in moving this issue forward.

NEOC Opener - Round 1 CCFG Story By: Noel Hartem • Photos By: Tim Dennis - www.timdphoto.com The event at Cumberland County Fairgrounds on March 8 and 9 kicked off the opener for Season 7. Mother Nature brought great apprehension and the nervous jitters for everyone with her prerace winter blast. The boys did all they could to make the course as suitable as possible for everyone all week while preparing for round 1. When you race in early spring, it’s like a blind date: You just never know what you’ll get until you show up. All you can do is hope for the best and deal with what sits down before you. Our “date” turned out to be a keeper. Yes, it was muddy; yes, the wind was nasty; yes, the course got hammered from the melted snow and 800-plus bikes, but the sun was out and I didn’t have to wear my rain slicker! I’m easy to please (unless you ask my husband).

Spring Time Safety Check Up! By: Chas McHenry Every spring, I get stressed. Oil, bearings, brakes, tire plugs, dead batteries, weird key switches, etc. etc. I never get out there early enough to get all the machines together for the summer season; it’d be so much easier if the kids ran all year like their goofy old Dad. Seeing my girls grow to teenagers has been so much more than interesting. The good, bad, and completely unable to be understood all together has made life worth living and sharing trail riding with them has made it all the more fun. Now that they no longer need to be coached from year to year on basic riding skills, I’m trying to get them to take a more hands-on approach to maintenance. This probably won’t go well with dresses and first dates, but I have a feeling knowing how a carb works and how to plug a tire may just be a feather in their cap, whether they like it or not. We all know to check our machines in the spring: air pressure, clean gas or having used stabilizer in the gas, winter time mice out of the air cleaners, and so on. Checking all the same stuff we should check before each ride but doing it much more thoroughly. How many of us forget, however, to spend some time going over the basics of riding with our young riders? Sure, they took the DCNR safety course last spring, but how many episodes of cartoons, action movies and bad habits have they learned since last spring that will muddy up their recall of the right way to do things? Time for a little maintenance, you think?

When your child took a safety course they received a book with all the activities they did that day, so you could go over it with them again. It’s time, where’s your book? It’s right where you left it, right? Me too. Ok, so the good news is you’re normal. The even better news is this - your Instructor will provide you with a fresh copy. Most instructors I know will allow your child to attend a refresher course for free or for much less than the original fee. Take them up on it; you get a new book, the children get to have some safety repetition, and the instructor has at least one child there who knows the course already. It’s a win for everyone. If you’re unable to get to a second course, you can call the DCNR Department of Forestry at (717) 783-7941 and ask for a copy of the course book. They will be happy to send you one. It’s a worthwhile tool for a young rider, and if you’re serious about your children’s safety while riding, going over it repeatedly will help to instill good habits that will last their entire riding life. It also puts the basics for a good, safe ride back in our minds and gives our subconscious some ammo when we know we are about to “do a dum dum.” So before it gets too tempting to head out on the trails before thoroughly checking things out, make sure you and your younger riders go over the machines together, go over the safety manual and your particular rules again, and have them turn some corners in the yard. Look for weight shift, make sure they are looking through their turns and not down at the tires, and lastly, enjoy the time with them. Sooner or later you’ll be changing the oil on their car. Happy spring, everyone, and we’ll see you on the trails!

Everyone should have one of these.

Chaplain’s Corner Hello Racers and Fans,

I am your MX chaplain and a retired racer. I enjoyed racing for about 17 years. As I reached the top of my racing potential, I was also learning many valuable life lessons. One lesson in particular: Don't look back; continue to look forward. This is a principle in the Bible, in life, and in racing. Another valuable lesson is to have your mind focused on what is ahead, not on what is behind. One of the most important things to discipline in your race career is your mind. If you come into a turn, miss the rut, and get passed, at that very moment you are presented with a major decision. Are you going to let your mind stay back in that turn still trying to figure out what you could have done better, or will you put your mind forward onto the next obstacle? That very moment in the race has caused me two knee injuries, not to mention that I lost both races as well. You know, God's grace gives us the opportunity to focus ahead in our everyday life and not worry about our past mistakes. His grace is so amazing that He has forgiven and removed the effect of our mistakes before we even make them. You see, He made us righteous or right before God, when Jesus died on the cross and rose to life out of the grave. His grace is why you do not have to sit and beat yourself up in your mind for what you should have done or did not do yesterday. He has freed you from that prison; as Romans 8:1 states, He has made it possible to live a life free from condemnation. God has and will continue to provide new opportunities for you in the future that will make your past mistakes look tiny in light of the new blessings in front of you. S834748

So start expecting great things in your future, not because you have done everything right, but because His grace provides it even if you have messed up. Believe Jesus is alive from the dead; believe He is God's only Son. Confess Him as Savior and Lord, and invite Jesus to be your Forgiver, the Lover of your soul, and the Hero of your life. Peace out, friends, ‘til next time,

BMER News By: Chris Banks

The Back Mountain Enduro Riders have been very busy, not to mention freezing cold, organizing the “Lawton 100 Dual Sport Ride, scheduled for Sunday, May 18. A hard-working select few have been mapping out trails and meeting with local land owners to get permission to use their land so we can increase the amount of trail riding and eliminate some of the roads. Everything appears to be going well, which should make this our best Dual Sport route to date! Camping on Saturday night, May 17, will be free, which will add to the great riding on Sunday and make for a great weekend. I hope to have a full report with photos for the June edition of Rec Rider. As always, ride safe and ride hard.

Sportin’ with Sprocket By: Jimmy “Sprocket” Kann

Spring is finally in the air! That’s great news for a lot of folks all over the world. Not so good for some others that would rather be in a deep freeze all year! I’m sure that some of you know someone like this. I know I do, IT’S ME! I could be in snow and cold year round and not even think twice about it. I can do everything in the snow and cold that most people do when it’s warm and sunny outside, except maybe sit on the beach in all that sand baking my skin to resemble a rotisseri baked chicken. Wow, now that sounds like fun, NOT! Plus, I mentioned sand, which is definitely my arch nemisis. Anyway, as it is becoming warmer outside and the grass that is finally showing is slowly turning a pale shade of green, I can’t help but think back a month and a half ago when I was in a winter wonderland in the great state of Montana. My family and I decided again to make the trip west to snowmobile through the adjoining states of Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. As we were preparing for the trip, the reports from folks who live out there were coming back to us, and the stories were not what we wanted to hear. Most everyone was telling us that the snow was not near the average depths from years past. Several times we contemplated canceling our trip and rescheduling, but in the end, we decided to go through with it anyway. This was a hard decision because of the fact that we had two other families joining us for this trip. There would be a total of ten of us, and I sure hoped Mother Nature did not let me down. As we got closer to departure day, there still was no snow in the forecast for that area, and we decided we would just make the best of it. We flew into Salt Lake City, Utah, and loaded everything we brought into our rental vehicles. I even tied the kitchen sink to the roof rack!

We then drove four and a half hours to West Yellowstone, Montana, where we were staying. The closer we got we could start to see traces of snow but had to agree with the reports we were getting, that the snow was nowhere as deep as in the past years. As we pulled into the town of West Yellowstone, however, we could see the 20 foot walls of snow that had been plowed into every available corner. At that point we started to doubt our reporters. We arrived on a Saturday night, so we decided we would wait till the next day to really see what this area looked like. I was up by 6 a.m. Sunday morning, and when I walked outside my hotel room, I knew that my reports were off. As we made our way around the town and secured our snowmobiles for the week’s journeys, the local folks were still saying the snow depths were way down. Once we were out on the trails, it did not take long for one of our friends to bury his sled. When we found him the only thing we could see was him. The snowmobile was completely buried in the snow. We estimated about three and a half feet at that spot. As we laughed and joked about “low snow depths,” we came to realize that usually the snow is anywhere from four to six feet deep at this time. We decided that the folks that live in this area and deal with it everyday would tend to think that this is not much snow! Long story short, we had an amazing time, and the snow was absolutly gorgeous! So if you ever get the urge to try something like this, check out the West Yellowstone area of Montana. You will be happy you did! Until next time, keep all four on the ground and pointed in the right direction!
