REC RIDER MAGAZINE
Letter from the Editor
Hello all and welcome to our July issue. I would like to start by wishing everyone a Happy Independence Day. I would ask that everyone stop right now and take a few moments to think about that. Many courageous Americans sacrificed so many things so long ago to develop a nation of free enterprise for the good of our children. Let us please be brave and remember those who fought to keep our country free. Let us all get involved in the decisions our leaders make, and let us all be proud to say that we are Americans. With that said, let me share with you another awesome change that’s coming with our next issue. Beginning in August, we will be printing Rec Rider 12 times a year and adding yet another facet of off road motorsports. In the last few issues, you’ve seen us phase in the big trucks and buggies, and coming in our next issue, you’ll find some local racing action. We’ll feature both motorcycle and ATV racing from tracks around the region. These changes will allow us to reach more people with our message, while keeping our information fresh and up to date. We thank you all for reading and would ask if you can to support us with a home subscription. It’s appreciated and goes a long way.

Line Mountain 3.5 Miler
June 8 – 9, 2013 • By: Bill “Rec Rider” Kaster The bikes and quads were the first to hit the track for Line Mountain’s second event of their season back at their club grounds in central Pa., and boy, were they in for a surprise. Little did they know, the club dammed up their normal mud hole, and it was deep! The new depths of water claimed more than one “swimmer” on the day. Once conquering the hill climb after the mud hole, they still had a rocky and muddy three miles to go. Chris Henry of Lititz, Pa., was a man on a mission, posting the fastest overall time of 29 minutes, 19 seconds, on his Honda, with Kevin Carl posting the quickest time of 31 minutes, 24 seconds on His Honda TRX450r in the quad division. The story of the day, however, was from the UTV class, where Hope Gares was the only one to finish in the class with a time of 1 hour, 1 minute, and 59 seconds. Hope and her
female co-pilot, along with their Polaris RZR800, were there to prove that boys were not the only ones who could conquer the brutal course. Next to run the course was the Trucks and Buggies, and they came out flying. Also forced to run through the newly remodeled mud hole these guys were slinging lots of mud, especially up the hill. With all of that water, the hill climb was the place to be. Things got quite interesting once the racers started to spin and slide. This caused many traffic jams throughout the day. Yet even with all of the troubles on the track, Scott Decker was able to post the fastest overall time of 1 hour, 9 minutes, and 20 seconds in his Long Wheel Base Truck. The next time these guys and girls get to attack the track is on July 20 and 21 for the Fast Miler. Hope to see you there!
Yeah, that mud hole was deep.
Frank Lopresti was the only three wheeler entered on the day.
Kevin Carl won the O/A quad division.

1st Annual Clover Fire Company Poker Run Heckscherville, Pa • By: Tabb Felty Photography As a new and creative way to raise money for the Clover Fire Company and Minersville Fire-Rescue in Heckscherville, they decided to take inspiration from Llewellyn and have a poker run for both onroad and off road vehicles, partnering with Schuylkill County Road Hawgs for the on-road portion. Through many meetings and a lot of work and organization, the event finally took place on June 1, 2013. The fundraiser started off with a spaghetti dinner and pre-registration the night before, and in the morning, breakfast was offered along with registration for the rest of the riders. It was a great turnout for their first event of this kind; 419 people showed up for the event. There were various places for excitement and a little challenge along the trail; a place for mud bogging, hill climbing, and different check points for friends to hang out. The staff swept the trail at 5 p.m. to make sure that no riders were left on the trail. Some riders packed up and left for the evening, while the rest stayed and listened to the band, Trail Under Fire. This was a great success for the fire company’s first event, and the riders enjoyed the trails. A special thanks to Reading Anthracite and the land owners for their permission to be on their land.

Coal Country Riders www.coalcountryriders.com
Coal Country Riders (CCR) was created in 2008 as way to keep a small group of ATV riders informed of changing situations in our common ride areas of the Pa. coal region. As word spread in person and online, more riders joined and CCR became larger and more recognized. We are a collection of like-minded OHV enthusiasts looking out for each other in uncharted riding territories. We embrace a do-it-yourself spirit, respect self reliance, but always will lend a hand in a time of need. Growing numbers have helped with the sharing of information in the ever-changing terrain and conditions of the PA anthracite region. Even the smallest bit of info could help keep someone safe and legal (thanks to all that participate). Coal Country Riders respect the historical significance of the land where coal was once king. The group (which also includes people outside the region) enjoys sharing knowledge, history, and stories of the many mysterious landmarks along our travels in the coal-laden mountains of eastern Pa. There’s a true understanding, respect, and duty to the ride areas and beyond. Using local ties, generational connections to the land, and the local riding community, CCR has long been a respectful caretaker to these historic lands. The group is known for maintaining beautifully kept areas which include recycling and policing within the ranks. CCR has always been diligent in keeping riding arteries free of trash and debris. To us, this is every day practice. We strive to take out more trash than we take in and support local businesses in ride areas. CCR promotes family and youth riding in coal country, which is pivotal to keeping our state’s rich racing tradition alive. Pa. coal region riding has produced great riders in the professional ranks: Sunbury’s four time GNCC XC1 Champ Chris Borich, AMA ATV MX champ John Natalie, AMA ATV MX multi-time champ Dustin Wimmer, Trevorton’s Jason Dunkelberger, and Shamokin’s nine time GNCC Women’s Champ Traci Cecco. These riders are the best of the best. There are plenty more Pa. riders in the Pro ranks and this is no accident. It starts with family riding at a young age with proper supervision and land access. As we press into the future, CCR looks to continue use of the website and social media to stay involved in the developing position of OHV in Pa. Many generous and knowledgeable riders help contribute a wealth of up-to-date information regarding our ride areas. We will continue to share and compare notes while vetting rumors and seeking accurate info and answers. Our numbers in our chosen recreation are huge and growing. There is great opportunity, economical and recreational, in our abundantly forested state. CCR is, and will continue to be, an allinclusive OHV group. We feel this is a unique strength and a key formula for uniting efforts for land access and rider rights.

Mountain Springs Arena Demo Derby Rec Rider Staff Report
Nestled in the quiet country town of Shartlesville, lies Mountain Springs Arena, a very peaceful place, unless you just so happen to come through on the right Saturday Night! Then you’ll hear nothing but open headers screaming, and the sounds of metal violently crashing together! I’m talking about full-on demolition derby. Mountain Springs Arena has been running demolition derby since the early 70’s and is still a premiere spot to test your derby skills. You may say, “Yeah, I have been to a demo derby … not that exciting to me.” Well, do you have another thing coming. Mountain Springs Feature Class goes by one rule, “If you can build it, you can run it!” Also referred to as the “outlaw class” or “King of the Mountain,” this class brings out the big boys. I’m talking about big V8 cars, full steel tubing bodies, and even a snow plow! Yes, a snow plow, as ran by Mike Aldinger in last year’s class. So hearing all of this was by far enough to draw us out to the event. As soon as we pulled in, it was motorhead heaven. The rumble of open headers and the smell of melting metal was in the air. We started by cruising through the pits to see what kind of action was going to unfold inside the ring. The first thing we noticed was the amazing amount of time these guys had spent on their cars. Full paint jobs, custom laser cut steel number plates on the roof; I mean these guys have put some time and money into these things. They started off the show by having the crowd vote on the best paint job, with the winner being the Prowler car. Next up was the small car class. This class consisted of factory-installed 4 or 6 cylinder cars with a max wheel base of 105 inches. Then it was the 80’s and newer class to run. This class had a few more rules, which limited the drivers and crew to original cars with no modifications, no modified tires or wheels, and a few other rules. Then it was time for the biggest class of the night, and my personal favorite to watch. The limited weld class. These guys had a bit more free reign on their cars. Running full alcohol race motors on cars that had to be 1979 or older, which meant they were tanks. These things were loud and proud and boy did they come out hitting hard! You could feel the hits from the stands. This class had the most entries and seemed to be where the
money was at. We managed to talk to a couple drivers who had more than $4000 just into the motors! So, needless to say, they put on a good show! The best part about it was the main event was still yet to come! The Outlaw “King of the Mountain” Class. Wow, words could not describe these cars. I have never seen anything like it before. From the full box tubing bodies to the steel ramp rear ends, these cars were built to deliver maximum destruction. There were 5 entries in this class and only 4 of them made it to the starting line, however, it was quite an amazing event. When these guys hit it sounded like dropping a steel I-Beam two stories onto a concrete landing pad. The sound just echoed through the stadium. And when all the mud and motors settled, only one man was left running: #19 Jason Koch! What a great night of mayhem it was. I highly suggest if you are looking for something to do with the whole family head over to Mountain Springs Arena and check out the Derby! For more information on how to see an event for yourself check them out at www.mountainspringarena.com. Tell them Rec Rider sent you!
Jason Koch wins the outlaw class.
This guy says it all.

Speed Citi
Seaford DE • By: PJ Timberman • May 18-19 2013 Motocross returned to Seaford on the weekend of May 18 as MAMA riders and their families checked out the new track at the newly reopened Speed Citi. Now under new ownership, the track is much longer and has lap times comparable to Budds Creek. Temperatures were in the mid 70’s on Saturday, with overcast skies as riders went out for some rounds of practice. The first gate of the day brought out Schoolboy 4 (1216) with Kenneth Venarchick taking both motos with Sean Demoreland taking second. In the Schoolboy (12-16) class, Jonathan Ferrell won the first moto, but Nick Hess came back to take the second moto and the overall win. David Born and John Chambers split wins in Senior Open with Born taking the second moto and the win. Joseph Superczynski won both races in the Senior Support class and Gene Kaczka finished second. In the 50 Plus class Greg Voell went 1-1 to take the title and Benjie Shidler did the same to take Senior Novice. In the third race of the day, Annie Wernig won both motos in the Women’s class with Shelby Benson finishing 3-2 after Lauren Plate who came back after a bad first round to finish runner up in the second moto. Charlie Wernig won both rounds of Collegeboy after a good battle with Sean Demoreland who went 2-2. The next gate brought out Super Senior Open with Greg Voell (84) going 3-1 to take the overall win. Mike Farmer (7) finished 2-2 to take second and Jeff Caudill went 1-3 to take third. Johnnie Parker (479) split motos with Jeffery Wilmoth (116) to take the win in Super Senior Support and Super Senior Novice finished out the day with Scott Vaartjes going 1-1 to take the win, with Michael Superczynski II finishing 4-2 to take home second. Rain started shortly after the last race on Saturday and fell heavily on and off during the night making the track slippery for Sunday morning’s practice and events. With the track still slick from the overnight rain, the racing started a little late with 31 riders taking the gate in the Supermini division. Justin Rodbell (58) went 1-2 to take the win over Cameron Dowell (726) who finished 3-1. The rain held off for most of the day, but as Open C took to the track late Sunday afternoon it started to fall. The last race of the day was Mini Women and Support and the rain was coming down as they took the gate. Shelby Benson went 2-1 to take the Open class with Katie Benson finishing second. Cheyenne McGun finished 1-1 to take the Support class with Brooke Johnson going 2-2 for second. It ended up being a great weekend for racing. Racing in Seaford is back and details about the track can be found at www.speedciti.com. Photos are available at www.delmarvasportsphotography.com.

Back Mountain Enduro Riders Race preparation at its finest!
Industry folks, ECEA club members and motorcycle enthusiasts alike rallied at the New Jersey State House in mid June to request fair access to and use of New Jersey’s State Forests. This publically owned land has been in use for the past 75 years and has been recognized as such by public and private organizations and agencies. Closures and limitations to land use in the past few years have affected this organization’s ability to hold their Enduro events, which have been enjoyed by so many dating back to 1934 when the first Sandy Lane Enduro was held in the area called the Pines. The sport of Enduro takes the form of Off Road Motorcycling where participants traverse a challenging course of trails with natural obstacles while adhering to a strict time schedule. Riders are scored on how well they adhere to that schedule. N.J. trails are essential to the traditional sport of Enduro competition. The N.J. trails are significant low-intensive recreational facilities, providing the public the opportunity for a wide variety of outdoor recreational uses. The group rallied at the House and did get an opportunity to present their case. One example was the fairly recent closure of the New Jersey Off Road Vehicle Park which offered close to 1000 acres of land to the off road motorized enthusiast. It was replaced with another park offering 8 acres that has age restrictions and requires all machines to be equipped with a headlight; hardly a decent solution in anyone’s eye. No decisions were made, but kudos to the group for making the efforts. In numbers we may be able to make a difference, and please remember that every vote counts. To find out how you can help go to: www.ECEA.org.
As you are reading this article, the Back Mountain Enduro Riders are probably resting from the long and vigorous preparation and execution of our first Hare Scramble of this season. As I am writing this article, we are in full preparation mode to pull off, once again, one of the best Hare Scrambles in the district. At our most recent meeting, all the talk was about making sure everything was taken care of, and not just done, but done the right way. Putting these events together takes a lot of time and attention to detail. It all started way back in December and January, at the district meetings to secure our dates. Then all the proper AMA and district paper work and insurance needed to be taken care of. After that is when the fun begins: Who can tow the trailer to the track? Matt, make sure we have Job Johnnies, a dumpster, and don’t forget the ambulance. John, make sure all our supplies are in the trailer. Bob, make sure there is enough ribbon. Rick, you’re head of track patrol. Rob, please get some food so we can have something to eat when we are finished cleaning up! The major subject of conversation for this event was scoring. We had a great system a few years ago, but someone came up with another system and found away to “make” all of the races use it. It was pretty good, and freed up a lot of hands from scoring to do other race day duties. I’m not sure what happened to it, but all of the sudden that system is not being used anymore. Last year, we did the old paper method which works fantastic with the great crew we have that do the scoring, but for this race, we voted to rent another electronic system and to see how it goes. The largest benefit with the electronic system is the ease and speed of posting the results. It takes a lot of time to calculate and place everyone when you score with the paper method. With computers and printers in place, it’s not much harder than pressing a button with an electronic system. Our last major concern going into this event, once again, is the weather, as it always seems to be. The meteorologists are predicting very heavy rain and river levels to go up to seven feet. With only about ten days till the event, we are concerned that if the river does go up this high, will it recede enough for us to hold the race? However, we are very optimistic due to the fact that the meteorologists are 100% right about 1% of the time! What this means is we are in race-on mode. Next issue, I plan to have a full race report. Until next issue, ride safe and ride hard!

Eagle Valley Off Roaders – EVOR 4 x 4 Adventure Snow Shoe, Pa. • May 4 – 5, 2013 The first weekend in May the EVOR club hosted a rompin’, stompin’, crawlin’, mud slingin’ and wheelin’ good time. The event was held at the Snow Shoe, Pa., Mud Track and was sponsored by Truck Stuff and More. Activities on the day included a mud pit, obstacle course, trail ride and rock course with industry vendors on hand and food offered up by the Snow Show Volunteer Fire Company.
Mark your calendars for October 5 and 6. EVOR has partnered with Snow Shoe Volunteer Fire Company hosting Rock ‘N’ Mud Blast. The event will offer onsite trails and an obstacle course. Also, there will be competition mud racing on a redesigned track. As always, for more information go to www.eaglevalleyoffroaders.com.
Below are a few quotes and comments from EVOR’s 4x4 event. “This was a great trip, EVOR club built an awesome course to play on and a great trail. We had a blast.” - Jennifer Watson, PA Jeeps “This was the first time I attended a 4x4 event and had the privilege of going for a Jeep ride with Colli. It was a blast, and oh yeah, I will be getting a Jeep! Thanks again Colli” - Thomas MacMillen-Spectator “Great spotting.” - David Parsons “Thank you to Barry Kellerman from Truck Stuff and More for always supporting Eagle Valley Off Roaders.” - Jonni Neidirch Upcoming News Eagle Valley Off Roaders (EVOR) has been busy in the last few months and gearing up for an eventful summer. EVOR would like to send out a huge “Thank You” to our premier sponsor Truck Stuff and More and all our sponsors for supporting EVOR 4x4 Adventure which was held May 4 and 5 in Snow Shoe, Pa. Memorial Day weekend, EVOR hosted their Annual Spring ride which was enjoyed by all. On Sunday, the club members and guests enjoyed an afternoon hike to an abandoned mining town in the heart of the Sproul State Forest. On the walk back to the vehicles, the club held an impromptu clean up as there was much litter along the trail. EVOR members traveled to Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival in Butler, Pa., over Father’s Day weekend where some members were trail guides and spotters on the obstacle course. EVOR also ran the “Slow Crawl” competition and had a club information booth. A great time was had by all and many are looking forward to next year. EVOR will be heading to Rausch Creek for some great wheelin’ and camping over July 4 weekend. You can also find EVOR members on the obstacle course as spotters in York, Pa., at The PA Jeeps 18th Annual All Breeds Jeep Show July 20 and 21 at the York Fairgrounds. EVOR will also have club booth so come on over and say “Hello” and see what EVOR has to offer.

The 23rd Annual Durty Dabbers Great Adventure National Dual Sport AMA National Dual Sport Series
June 1 and 2, Mill Hall, Pa. • By: Chris Borger • Photos by Robert Litwin The 23rd annual Durty Dabbers National Dual Sport and Adventure Tour was held June 1 and 2 at Mill Hall, Pa. Once again, the Durty Dabbers Club put on an extrodinary event. This was a fun-filled weekend of great trails and lots of good food provided by an outstanding club. The event began with the traditional Friday evening reception and registration at the G-Brick Motorsports dealership in Mill Hall. For many years, G-Brick Motorsports has been a major sponsor of the event and has provided a great reception area and open house for the event. The club provides snacks, sign-ups, GPS downloads, rider packets, and a general fun time at the reception. The dealership always has great prices and provides an outstanding service of rider support. They really go the extra mile to make you feel welcome and right at home. This year’s event was awesome, with great weather both days and miles of fantastic trails. The Saturday event began with rider registration and breakfast at the Castanea Fire Department camp grounds. The camp grounds is one of the finest facilities at any event for camping and parking, and has many accommodations, such as their food facilities, rest rooms, showers, and R&T and GVMC club members on the trail. pavilions. This is really a great place to be for weekend camping or a one day stay. The riders were released for the ride at 11 a.m. The Saturday ride starts a little later in the morning to coordinate with the DCNR gate openings along the course. The club had some changes this year, including a new alternate and an extreme down-hill section that were great additions to this course. The trail sections were awesome, with lots of great single track, and yes a few rocks on the course. The course ran about 100 miles Saturday, with lots of resets, scenic views, a couple gas stops, and the big snack stop in the afternoon. The club always provides a nice snack and drink stop every year and it is always a welcome site for the riders. The weather conditions for Saturday were warm, in the 80’s by afternoon and mostly dry, although the area did receive some rain that week and did help to cut back somewhat on the dust riding the park transfer roads. The club also provides the Saturday evening dinner, which includes a great prize give-away to every rider registered at the event, a fantastic sausage and pork dinner cooked up by the Castanea Fire Company, and the traditional Trials exposition, put on by members of the club. The Durty Dabbers club not only is a nationally-known Dual Sport and Adventure club, but also the premier Trials club in the mid-Atlantic region, and their The now famous water crossing. members really put on a great show for the riders Saturday evening. This was indeed a spectacular day of riding. The Sunday ride started at 9 a.m. from the camp grounds and headed through some private land owners really provide an awesome format and lots of action all the town of Lock Haven north up into the Sproul State Forest area. The Sunday ride weekend long. included some new trail, and an expanded section at the ATV areas. One of the many The club was very well organized, with a smooth sign-up, lots of patrol riders, highlites of the Sunday ride is the famous creek crossing. As always, the locals were support trucks, and several club members changing flats and helping out disabled there, as well as many riders and club members, as spectators. This is one of the riders. The course was laid out perfect, with plenty of resets, resting points, and gas largest water crossings in any event and it is always a thrill to cross it. The Sunday stops. Many thanks to our good friends at the club, including Nils, Clyde, Lisa, Lana, These are some really friendly folks who serve up a huge pasta lunch, with endless Logan, and all the fine folks in the club who made this event possible and provided amounts of cakes and drinks. The Sunday course was awesome as well, with miles of such great support all weekend. Also a word of thanks to the event sponsors, great trail, the ATV park, the Moto park, a few stream crossings, and the fantastic Husqvarna, Yamaha, G-Brick Motorsports, and many others, and a special thanks to scenic view at Hyner Ridge overlook. The course also had a technical six mile jeep the Pennsylvania DCNR, and the fire companies of Castanea and Chapman Township road down the mountain to the finish. Keystone Pitbike Series June 1, 2013 • Sleepy Hollow MX Ah, what fun it is to ride, that is, if you’re not the guy who is taking the pictures. What a hoot, and I didn’t even get to ride a bike. Props go out to both Sleepy Hollow MX in Fredericksburg, Pa., and Keystone Trailers/Pitster Pro from Lancaster, Pa. The two combined to form a new Saturday night outdoor Pit Bike Series that caters to everyone from the youngster on a CRF 50 to the full blown modified pitbike ridden by anyone, any age who has the desire to do so. The only limitation is your machine must be air-cooled with a four stroke powerplant and no more than 250cc. 10 classes are available to meet just about everyone’s needs. Talk about a fun and low cost way to go and experience the thrill of racing. A special track was built to accommodate pitbikes and small off road motorcycles so there are no intimidating obstacles. You don’t need an AMA or a District Card, just the desire to show up and have some fun. The next event is Saturday July 27 with sign up starting at 2 p.m. and practice begins at 4 p.m. Class awards and year end prizes are offered. The series is brand new this year so come on out and tell all your friends. Check it out by emailing: keystonepbracing@gmail.com or call 717-581-9020.

PaOHV RecRider Article Ride Season 2013...It’s Finally Here! By: Dick Lepley, Executive Director, PaOHV As I write this, I’m basking in much needed sunshine here in northwest Pennsylvania, and Summer seems to have finally arrived. That’s good, because I was about ready to quit working on vintage motorcycles and ATV’s and begin building an ark. Since you’re reading Rec Rider, my assumption is you’re an informed rider meaning this article might seem like I’m singing to the choir. If that’s the case I hope you’ll pass these thoughts on to those who aren’t as enlightened as you. 1. Respect landowners, and always ask before you put a wheel on property that belongs to someone else. And when you’re riding on a legal trail, stay on it, and stay off public roads unless they’re designated for use. Yes, I know, there aren’t nearly enough places to ride, but we’ll touch on that later. As I travel around Pennsylvania (and elsewhere) I see way too many instances of youngsters riding dirt-bikes and ATV’s that are not “right-sized” for them, and also doing so without the benefit of safety gear. I routinely see ATV’s with two, three, four, and even more occupants on board, and quite often one of them is an adult who should certainly know better. The outcome often leads to serious injuries or worse. ATV’s are not mass-transit vehicles and neither four-wheelers nor minicycles are meant to be baby sitters. Understand the risk, and recognize the negative impact that irresponsible practices bring to bear on the sport and the families who suffer the consequences. Speaking of safety, the PaOHV ATV simulator unit is nearly ready to go to work. It will be one of less than a dozen that are in use across America, and it will help us get the message of responsible riding to thousands of Pennsylvanians. Watch for more details in future issues of Rec Rider and on our website at www.paohv.org.
As I noted in thought #1 above, there aren’t nearly enough places to ride, and PaOHV and its members have been working hard to change the imbalance that exists between us and other user groups in Pennsylvania. The greatest potential for additional trail miles is to be found on private property. Unfortunately, private land holders are hesitant to create opportunities for motorized recreation because they are not protected under the Recreational Use of Land and Waters Act (RULWA). PaOHV has been fighting to change this inequity for over eight years, but we continue to be thwarted by those in our legal system who greedily do what is necessary to protect their ability to support lawsuits that defy common sense. Over the years, I’ve spent countless hours attending shows and other events, and I’ve lost count of the riders who complain to me about the lack of places to ride, harassment by officers of one stripe or another, and so on, and each time that I’ve talked to one of those riders I’ve explained the need for coalition, but when I’ve asked them to join PaOHV, or one of our member clubs, the answer is nearly always the same: ”let me think about it”, and therein lies the rub! So, do our sport a favor, stop thinking about it and join PaOHV or one of our member clubs. You can learn more by going to www.paohv.org. Trust me, your ability to ride down the trails of the future is dependent on your involvement today. Stay safe, and enjoy ride year 2013.
ATV Training Coming To A Boy Scout Camp Near You By: Denny Mann Recently, while attending the ATV Safety Institutes’ ATV Instructor Course, I had the pleasure to train with five Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Camp ATV Instructor hopefuls. The group came from two camps in Ohio, a camp in Maryland, and one in Wisconsin. Like me, they had to first pass the ASI Instructor training course before they could begin teaching. The four day course went into depth regarding the building blocks of learning safe ATV operation. During the days of peer teaching we had plenty of time to discuss the future of ATV riding and the Boy Scouts of America. The five trainees are a very enthusiastic group of young people who have high hopes for the summer camp season. 2013 is the second year BSA included ATV programs as an approved camp activity, following a 3-year pilot project. One of the country’s premier youth leadership organizations, BSA adopted the ATV Safety Institute (ASI) rider education curriculum as the official training course for leaders, instructors and Scouts while incorporating state-by-state requirements for age of operation and other applicable laws. The basic format for an ATV elective at a Boy Scout camp is the instructional class would be two hours per day for the duration of the camp. Scouts would have to be age 14 or older to enroll in the ATV training program. Classes are conducted on BSA-owned ATVs, and all of the needed riding equipment is provided. Most riding lessons take place at camp; however, some councils have discovered that there are designated ATV trails in state or national forests near their Scout camps, allowing them to trailer vehicles to the public trails. All training is certified by ASI, and upon completion of the class, students receive a certification card. This certification card is accepted nationwide and is
recognized by the Pennsylvania DCNR as an equivalent of the DCNR’s safety course. What a great way to learn something new for those who otherwise would not have the opportunity. To find a BSA ATV program in your area call your local BSA Council or go to: http://www.scouting.org/localcouncillocator.aspx For information on ASI classes call 800-887-2887 or go to: http://www.atvsafety.org/

Breezewood Proving Grounds – Park Review Rec Rider Staff Report
Mid April, we packed up and headed out to the Breezewood Proving Grounds to catch the tail end of their Spring Fling Weekend. Saturday started off with open riding from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., followed by their first Outlaw race of the year. Races are run a little differently at Breezewood if you compare them to a traditional AMA format. Classes are formed and sometimes gates combined with classes being scored separately with everyone getting one moto and you’re done. This allows for open practice all day with a little friendly competition at night. Folks seem to like it and their turn outs are pretty good. They’ll be holding more of these events throughout the year so check their ad here in our pages for a full race schedule. Breezewood, however, is primarily a practice and training facility for both motorcycles and quads, and from what we could tell, one of the nicest around. You’ll find amenities here that just aren’t offered at most places. When you pull down their lane you’ll first notice the cabins that are available for rent along with a shower house to knock the mud and dust off after a long day of riding. We then came to the sign-in building which explained the fees and hours of operation along with the rules and waivers necessary to ride for the day. We noticed that riding is available five days a week, from 8 in the morning until 8 at night, with the park being closed only Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The facility offers tracks for youth, intermediate and expert skill levels. There is something for everyone at Breezewood, so bring the whole family. In addition to cabin rentals they offer RV hookups, tent sites and day parking, too. They have a fully stocked pro shop in case you forget or break something, along with a dining hall, a kid’s playground and a really nice swimming hole. Talking with Dan Harris, the owner at BPG, he revealed that they have big plans for the summer. A band stand is being built to host live entertainment and there is talk of a possible expansion into a trail system there. Don’t hold me to that one, but it was just something a little mouse mentioned while I was there. I am, after all, a reporter too. In addition to open practice, they hold two Dream Camps each year, one for bikes and one for quads. Riders get to train with some of the best in the business while spending a week at camp. Other special events throughout the year include holiday weekend bashes, couch racing, indoor pit bike stuff and the list goes on and on. So if you’re looking for a great place to spend a day, a week, or the summer check out the Breezewood Proving Grounds located not far from the PA Turnpike exit in Breezewood, PA. Get the details online at: www.breezewoodprovinggrounds.com or call 814-784 -3605.
The facility offers tracks for all skill levels.
Cabins and a shower house set Breezewood apart.
A full gate is on site for the evening racing action.
Their Pro Shop offers everything you may need while there.

April and May were great for the Hudson Valley 4 Wheelers (HV4W). On April 14th we were able to share a trail ride with fellow NOVA members, Long Island Off Road (LIOR). This was LIOR’s first trip to the property affectionately named The Dog Park. The Dog Park is 10 acres of rocks on top of rocks. The rigs varied from fairly stock 4-door JKs to TJ’s with Dana 60s front and rear. LIOR had a great time with surprisingly little damage overall. The end of the day was topped off by watching three of the HV4W members trying to run the obstacle named “The Gorge”, a 400-foot run through a valley of rocks with 10-foot tall walls and a nearly vertical climb out. The Dog Park has not only become a favorite of the HV4W, LIOR, and North Eastern 4 Wheelers due to the great range of obstacles, but also for the fact that you can have pizza delivered on the trail! On May 4, the HV4W headed to upstate N.Y. for a ride on private property in Cairo. This private property is run and maintained better than most off road parks, with well-marked and named trails, as well as a very gracious host. Thirteen trucks spent the entire day running the trails on the property. As a result of our participation in the restoration of the Mt. Beacon fire tower, we were asked to participate in the city of Beacon’s Centennial parade on May 18. Unfortunately we had a trail ride scheduled for the same day. To show support for the community, four trucks from HV4W attended the parade while the others went to the ride in Conn. The reception of the HV4W at the parade was great. The little kids loved seeing the big trucks and the parents appreciate the volunteer work done by the members of our club. June and July are going to be equally as busy and we look forward to sharing our progress with you in following issues. JULY 2013
White Rose Motorcycle Club A Club of Many Colors • By: Jim Bull I’d like to start by thanking the club members at White Rose for welcoming us to their events this year. We made three trips there so far and have covered three different disciplines of motorcycle competition. Each time, we came away with smiles on our faces. Let me clarify the title of my story: A Club of Many Colors. It’s rare in today’s society that any one club would offer so many different activities to the motorcycle enthusiast. Many times, clubs or promoters specialize in one form of competition or activity and that defines who they are. White Rose, on the other hand, offers events for just about any motorcycle enthusiast. In our journeys there we have witnessed Motorcycle Trials competition where riders traverse themselves over natural and man-made obstacles. If you’ve never attended one of these events you would be in awe as to what these guys and gals can do with their bikes. Next up, we attended an AMA Pro Hillclimb where three classes of riders race the clock up a 400 foot hill with a 10 foot head start. Bikes range from stock 450cc motocross bikes with a long swing arm and modified tire to full-out nitro burning, run what you brung nasties with full paddles or sometimes chains on the tires that would cut a three foot oak tree in half with one rev of the throttle. It was a pleasure while there to listen to an old timer and seven-times National Champion named Beze Wentz reminisce about the old days when the admission fee to a hillclimb was 50 cents and you couldn’t win enough money to put gas in your tank to make it home. I guess some things haven’t changed. Lastly, we attended a motorcycle swap meet and bike show and what fun that was. Man, you could find just about anything there. Who knew so many people were dealing in old, hard-to-find stuff. Let alone the cool bikes that were there. If a guy had a little bit of dough he could have went home with a few new/old cool rides. In addition, the club sponsors bike nights at the local minor league baseball stadium, as well as more meets and antique shows in their schedule this year and another Pro Hillclimb in September. One other thing you’ll find at White Rose is the best fish sandwich on the east coast. If you love motorcycles and you’re looking for somewhere to go and have some fun without spending a lot of that dough, then check out their remaining schedule at: www.whiterosemc.org and make sure to tell them that Rec Rider sent ya.
Shawn Herbst won best of show at the WRMC 2nd Annual Swap Meet and Show in mid June.

Nick Bleau wins the Pro Sport division in his first Pro race.
Jay Sallstrom wins two classes for Dr. Bob Racing.

Renovo ATV Cruise For A Cure
By: Rich Wykoff CMATVA Committee Chairman for Renovo Cruise for a Cure and Henry Sorgen CMATVA President Members of the Bucktail Medical Center Relay for Life team met with members of the Central Mountains ATV Association to discuss a project that could lift the spirits of the area and those affected by cancer, while raising a significant amount of money for cancer research. Thus was born the idea for “Renovo ATV Cruise for a Cure” - a 45-mile guided ATV ride through Renovo and into the surrounding state forest. On Saturday, June 8, at 9 a.m., the first group of all-terrain vehicles departed Heritage Park in Renovo, initiating the third annual Renovo ATV Cruise for a Cure. The event, sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association and sponsored by the Central Mountains ATV Association, is the culmination of a yearly fundraising effort by the Bucktail Medical Center’s Relay for Life team. Already known for their butterfly launch each year at the Clinton County Relay for Life, the team is gaining state-wide recognition for hosting another event that is unique and memorable - one that gives our community an opportunity to support the American Cancer Society’s efforts to find a cure for cancer. As with previous years, the public decorated Renovo in purple to honor survivors and remember loved ones who have succumbed to cancer. The Relay Team lined the parade route with American Cancer Society message signs to remind us of the reasons for Relay. New this year were purple flags that could be purchased at the registration booth for use as banners of remembrance similar to the intent of luminaria at Relay For Life. Participants could write names of those they wish to honor on the flags and attached them to their ATVs with zip ties. The flags were available for others to purchase as well. The Cruise for a Cure has grown from 50 ATVs the first year to 133 ATVs and UTVs and 46 passengers this year. The route for this year’s ride was completely new, beginning with a loop around Renovo and back to Heritage

Park before heading up Boone Road and onto forestry roads, a power-line, pipelines, trails, and a township road on the way to Cross Fork. The return trip included a rest stop at Quiet Oaks Campground and a loop around the top of the mountain above Renovo near the “flagpole” vista before returning to Heritage Park for a chicken barbeque dinner sponsored by Frank and Susan Mills and the BMC Relay for Life team. Safety for the approximately 45-mile guided ride was provided by the Renovo Fire Department, Renovo Police Department, and DCNR Forest District 10. The event was billed as a “family-safe” ride. Experienced guides provided by Central Mountains ATV Association rode at the front and back of each group of 30 ATVs. The average speed for the ride was 15 mph with “slow down” zones for vistas. Two stops were planned for bathroom breaks and stretching with a 20-minute stop scheduled at Quiet Oaks Campground for relaxing, snacking, and playing ATV games. Dave and Carla Flack, owners of Quiet Oaks Campground provided portable johns at Heritage Park and the rest stops. They added a handwashing station and showers at Heritage Park for those who wished to wash away the dust before eating. Renovo Fire Company had a wash station in Heritage Park for ATVs as well. With such an outpouring of support for this event, and with the common mission of all participating being to play a part in raising funds for finding the cure for cancer, the event committee knows that at the end of this Saturday, everyone will have enjoyed a tasty meal, a safe and beautiful ride in our mountains, and the fellowship of all who have had their lives touched by cancer. What a wonderful tribute this will be to all who collaborated in developing the event and to those who were sponsored it. Cancer has touched each of us in one way or another. We invite you to join us next year to help support this great cause. Watch for updates on cmatva.org and Facebook : Renovo ATV Cruise For A Cure.

The fees provide funding to administer the program, maintain trails in DCNR-managed parks and forests, and provide grants to profit and nonprofit organizations for developing additional riding opportunities.
Two Types Of Registrations Apply: •
•
Registration For ATVs used anywhere off of your own property or property leased by you, such as designated State Forest trails. $20 fee every two years Limited Registration For ATVs used solely on your own land or land leased by you. Free registration -No expiration, unless ownership of vehicle changes
Plates and Decals
An ATV owner will be issued a registration plate for the vehicle. An expiration sticker to be affixed to the plate will be issued for standard registrations.
Liability Insurance
If you are using your ATV solely on land owned or leased by you, you are not required to get liability insurance. All other riders must carry liability insurance. Proof of that insurance must be carried with you when you ride. There are no minimum requirements or coverage standards established by DCNR or the Snowmobile/ATV Law for the liability insurance.

Tips, Trips and Trails You are sitting at home in the garage doing some bench riding with your buddies and talking about taking a trip somewhere to ride this summer. What type of riding are you usually looking for? Are you looking for the same type of terrain that you always ride, or are you looking for something a little different? We know of a place that differs from anywhere you may have ridden here in the Northeast. The place that we are talking about is none other than Busco Beach in North Carolina. Being from the Northeast area of the United States, most of the riding we have been exposed to is mountainous and rocky to some degree. Changes in elevation are definitely normal when you are out creeping through your favorite riding areas and trails. However, when we went to check out Busco Beach, everything changed. Busco Beach is located in Goldsboro, N.C., a mere six and a half to seven hours away from us here in York, Pa. It may seem like a good distance to travel to a riding area, but once you make the trip, you will understand why we did, too. One thing that will stand out to most off-road enthusiasts is that they are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, rain or shine. Not too many riding areas offer hours of operation like that. You will notice the majority of this facility is sand-based and the trails are groomed. All types of machines are welcome, including 3-Wheelers, ATVs, UTVs, Sport Quads, Side-by-Sides, and golf carts. Jeeps and 4X4 vehicles are not permitted on the trails. Busco Beach has plenty of mud and water holes to explore. We suggest that you have a lift and snorkel kit when going through some of the holes because they can be pretty deep! Busco Beach is a full-service riding facility with everything you need to enjoy your off-road vacation. They offer primitive camping as well as RV sites with 30 and 50 amp services with full hookups. When you are ready to hit the trails, you will find mud holes, ATV ponds, mud pits, trails and many play areas consisting of sand mounds and flats. In addition to the trails, there is also a motocross style track, flat track and a drag strip to test your abilities and skills. Busco Beach has over two thousand acres to ride and play on. Once you are done for the day, you can wash your machine off at the ATV wash pit and then grab a hot shower at the bath house. There is also a game room to wind down in, a convenience store to buy anything that you may have forgotten, and a concession stand to grab a bite to eat. Another big plus about Busco Beach is that they have their own repair shop just in case you encounter any problems throughout your stay. Don’t own an off-road machine? Not a problem; they also offer rentals to customers. One last thing, Busco Beach also has an EMT on site to help anyone with any unfortunate mishaps, too. If you are into new adventures and want a change of scenery, check out Busco Beach at www.buscobeachandatvpark.com. Make the trip, you won’t regret it!

ATV Safety Training
At our same outing at the Dirt Bike School, there were two classes of ATV Training going on as well, both an ASI course and a DCNR course. JULY 2013
ICV ATV Club June Open House June 2013
About 80 guests and 65 club members enjoyed a beautiful day on the ICV ATV Club trails. Those trails were greatly improved this year. The system grew from 32 to 35 miles while eliminating some short trails. The result is a loop-style trail system with more riding and less confusion. In addition, a large amount of the rocky trails were groomed with a dozer. The visitors seemed to like what they found since 15 percent of them joined the club on that day. Other guests may join in the next two weeks and reduce membership cost by their Open House fee. Club members put together a great spread of food that looked overwhelming in the morning. But hungry riders enjoyed the free lunch, and by afternoon there was little food that went home with members. The club has another Open House scheduled for September 29. In addition, there is a benefit ride on July 21 to help one of the club members with medical bills. In either case, guests will pay $20 for a great day of riding and a nice meal. Visit the club website for more info: www.icvatvclub.com.
