Letter from the Editor

Hello all and welcome to our August issue. That’s new, you say? Didn’t we just get an issue last month, too? Well, there are big changes around the ol’ Rec Rider camp fire with this issue. Its official: we are now a 12-times-a-year publication. Thanks to you all, we’ve been growing and expanding and although never easy in this day and age, we have decided to charge. Recently you’ve found the addition of our larger off-road friends to our pages, and this month, you’ll find more local amateur racing. This issue we’ve included some motorcycle racing action, but expect to see ATV racing as well in the coming months. We’ve accomplished this by merging content from a longtime publication we published called Motorcycle Racing Action (MRA). To all of our loyal MRA readers and fans: we thank you all for your support over the years. We had a fantastic 17-year run but thought it time to make some changes. Many will say, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”; however, we believe to stay ahead of the curve and to bring better products to market, change is always necessary. So, your product has not gone away. It has just changed a little and for the better, we hope. By combining the two publications, we will reach more likeminded individuals, but better yet, your content and information will be more up to date. It’s a different look for some, but it’s still the same great content, which we believe is a win for everyone. As always, expect to find Rec Rider Magazine at the local tracks and riding parks, at Turkey Hill and retail locations, your favorite shop or club and by home delivery subscription. Although we are “complimentary” at many locations, we ask if you can to support us through joining our Rec Rider Army. For only $25.00 you’ll now get 12 issues delivered to your door, plus a really cool T shirt and sticker kit. We ask your patience as we get through our first couple of issues, and as always, we welcome your feedback. Watch for us online and on Facebook, and we’ll see you all soon.

Yamaha Grizzlys Test Rec Rider Staff Report

This issue we hooked up with the Dennis from Pine Grove Yamaha and managed to get ourselves on a couple of Yamaha Grizzlys. We decided to see how they tackled the beautiful trails of the Pennsylvania Coal Country, so we met up early one Sunday morning in the extreme July heat and hit the dirt. The first quad was the larger of the two, the Yamaha Grizzly 550 FI 4x4, which came with most of the available bells and whistles. With fuel Injection, fully independent suspension, and the limited-edition RealTree AP Camouflage plastics, this quad was sharp looking! Powering this ride is a 558cc single

overhead cam, liquid cooled engine that is derived directly from the powerhouse 700. The stainless steel exhaust was a great-looking touch that really shined in the open fields. This quad also featured ample amounts of dry storage, from the trunk under the seat that conveniently fit five soda cans to the smaller dry storage bin located on the front right fender which was great for a wallet, keys and phone. All of this with the class-leading lowest wet weight of only 648 lbs. That allowed us to really throw this thing around through the woods. With all that being said, she had more than enough power to climb

The mid-size Grizzlys offer great value.

Both machines offered plenty of power.

These quads were right at home in the woods.

every hill we came upon, and a little extra to whip around those dirt corners, too! The next ride was the smaller and also in Realtree AP Camouflage, the Yamaha Grizzly 450 4x4. Now, don’t count this guy out because of his size. With the smaller wheel base of only 48.5 inches, it allowed us to pick easier lines through the thick brush and squeeze through many places we had to go around with the 550. With its 421cc liquid-cooled powerhouse, it also had more than enough power to conquer the many challenges we threw at it. Plus with its 4x4 low, we just crept through or over anything that was too tough looking. Now, on the wideopen trails, the 550 definitely shined, but when we got into the tight wood this little guy kept up just fine due to its smaller,

more nimble size. Also featuring tons of dry storage, this quad is not a bad option to help save a little cash, coming in just around $1500 less than the 550. For both of these quads, Yamaha offer tons of accessories. Whether it’s working on the farm or getting you out to your favorite tree stand, these quads can be set up to handle it all. So you can hitch up your trailer to move that pile of firewood you just cut, then call up your buddies and hit the trials for an afternoon of riding. No matter what your purpose, Yamaha has a machine to fit your lifestyle. For more information, either head out to Pine Grove Yamaha, located just off of interstate 81 in central Pennsylvania or check all Yamaha has to offer at www. yamahamotorsports.com and see what works for you!

East Coast 4WD Association – Region B County Line Race • June 15-16, 2013 • Story by: Debbie H • Photos by: Leroy Bogert Well! Here we are at the 44th annual Kempton, Pa., race. A huge crowd of at least 1,000 people was on hand looking for a great night of racing. The sand drags have a sanctioned length of 100 yards, and the track was looking very smooth after a week of heavy rains. This led to some good side-by-side racing, and all went well until “B” class women, when Debbie Hayes had a paddle tire go flat as she was staging for her trophy run. The crowd let us know really loudly that the tire was flat, and after a quick change with a donated tire and wheel from Tom Hartman’s racer, she went on to win her class and be the quickest lady of the night. The open class was equally as exciting, with a lot of real close finishes also. With between 70 and 80 competitors, we had enough racing to make everyone happy. On Sunday, the obstacle course was a swamp in many places, and this led to a lot of slipping and sliding among the racers. There were several rollovers with Frank Ryczak, Mike Smith and myself putting on a clinic on how to roll your racer. Then Bryan Follin Jr. showed us all how not to, with a totally awesome save

on his run. The racers this year will have to deal with blind points. No one will know where they are in the standings until the final race. This race will be the Benefit Race at Kempton, Pa., being held on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 5 and 6. Team Fujio will hold our summer nationals at Kempton, Pa., on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 17 and 18, with sand drags during the day and figure-eight on Saturday evening under the lights and a large obstacle race on Sunday. This event never fails to entertain. Columbia Hillclimbers will have their 44th annual 4x4 Offroad Challenge, and this will be held in Delta, Pa., on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 3 and 4; Pine Creek Four-Wheelers will hold their Thunder in the Hollow in Jersey Shore, Pa., on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. If you would like to know more about East Coast Four-Wheel Drive Association, please go to our website at ec4wda.org or call me at 610-392-4155. Clean Up at the Coal Creek Commerce Center By: Dennis Felty • Photos By: Tabb’s Photography Saturday, June 15, in Saint Clair, Pa., in the Coal Region of Schuylkill County. This was not an ordinary Saturday, as the off-road community was on an agenda. Event organizers submitted a proposal to Reading Anthracite Corporation security specialist Richard Morgan for a cleanup effort to take place at one of the area’s designated off-road parking locations at the far end of Coal Creek Commerce Center, which was built on a now-reclaimed coal mining site. Through a cooperative effort, approval was granted by owner Brian Rich, and the effort was implemented. Donations of a dumpster, gloves, and garbage bags were only a start; doughnuts, coffee, an assortment of hamburgers, hotdogs, beverages, pizza, and a pretzel sampler tray were all donated by local businesses in support of the project. We had over 20 people volunteer to help with the cleanup, which took two and a half hours to complete on over one mile of curb line. A total of 64 garbage bags were collected and disposed of in a dumpster while batteries, tires and large objects were set aside for proper disposal. This day also included an afternoon ride as a benefit to those who participated. The staging area was visited by a representative of Saint Clair’s police department to verify the departure time, as we had prearranged for assistance in crossing the Route 61 highway entrance to Coal Creek Plaza. As we proceeded to the plaza entrance, a police escort was awaiting our arrival. With flashing lights, our group was escorted across the busy intersection and safely onto the trail system. With many motorists observing, few knew this was legitimate. With the work behind us, we proceeded to parallel the highway below through a trail with mountain laurel providing a refreshing escape from the heat. With access to the Duncott and Heckschersville areas of the Reading Anthracite Property, we rode through Kelly’s Hollow and then to a mountain stream-fed pond known as “The Whimsy,” where we found the signature sound of the cicada population in full force. A short break and we were on the trail again, as we were interested in showing our ride group a sampling of features this area

provides. Through the network of trails, we passed remnants of the past. Draglines and shovels sat idle along the trail as we headed to another remnant of Coal Region’s history. We parked our machines at the stone barricade and proceeded on foot to our next destination. A hand-laid stone wall intergraded into the side of a mountain, creating an arch that allowed mountain runoff access into a water basin. This is referred to as the “Hole in the Wall” and was built in 1873 to allow trains an overpass across the water. We reassembled and headed to a portion of the trail system that was utilized for the Clover and Rescue Fire Company’s ATV ride. The group swept through this portion of the trail with ease, as the trail is well broken in. As we approached a more active work area, a mammoth 7800 Marion dragline with a 30-plus cubic yard bucket dwarfed the riders as we passed in close proximity. Entering the wooded maze of trails, the ride became more challenging, as this area provides a diverse amount of terrain which would satisfy any rider’s style. A well-deserved break was due; after an already busy day we passed through a play area called the “Black Desert.” The name, as it implies, is a large basin of coal silt with plenty of opportunity for riders to enjoy whoops, hill climbs, and half-moon berms suitable for all experience levels. In the distance Reading Anthracite’s Saint Nicholas Breaker was visible. Utilizing a portion of the haul roads, which are used to deliver coal to this modern-day plant we started our return to the staging area with a full day of events completed; many of the riders shared their appreciation of a successful day. In return, we would like to thank all our sponsors who so generously donated the supplies necessary, as well as to the ride community for volunteering their time and effort. A special thank you goes out to Reading Anthracite for their cooperative effort. For information pertaining to access permits, go to ReadingAnthracite.com

Mud Bog at Big Al’s By: Tabb Felty

The first mud bog of the year happened on June 29, with a new track to go with it. There was two mud pits side by side to add a little challenge for the drivers; one mud pit was deeper and more intense than the other. All the drivers had to follow the main obstacle course for the competition; the obstacle course included the mud pit, then a sharp turn that led to the whoops, a trench to cross and then a final jump to launch. Seventeen drivers competed with all different types of vehicles such as Jeeps, trucks, and bigger trucks; each vehicle had its own special look and style. Along with these vehicles there were also unique drivers along with their ages. It wasn’t only people with driver’s licenses showing off their skill; there were also members of the younger generation showing their parents how to drive. With three rounds to show how fast each driver could move through the course, there was a little pressure to show off for the crowd. Three different classes of vehicles were put together so that everybody was

equally matched. Everybody pushed their vehicles to the edge just for a little fun, and it turned out to be a great event. Even though there were breakdowns and lots of people getting stuck, winners were announced for each class. For the big trucks the winners were Tom Smith and Wayne Weist, for the next class it was Damien Smith and Chris Ptaszynskie, and for the last class it was Joe Shingara and Wes Harris. After all the times were written down and the competition was over, the second and more challenging pit was opened to the drivers. The final event was the father-son race to see who was better, Wes against Wes. The event went well, and thank you to all the drivers who came out and tried to prove they were the best. If you have a vehicle that you want to try out in the mud pit, feel free to join us for the next mud bog happening on Saturday, Aug. 31. Also, the 4x4 race is Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 24 and 25, so feel free to join us then too, even as a spectator; I guarantee it’ll be a good time.

Pagoda Motorcycle Club

RD # 7 – Mainline Series • July 6-7, 2013 • By: Jim Bull Photo.com Yes, we go from 40 degrees and wet to 97 degrees and dry. Isn’t it funny how the weather can determine so much of our life? On this day, however, the racers decided to play. Close to 350 came out along with the spectators, parents and club members to pull off this race day. The racing action was as hot as the temperature, and several racers pulled off the double wins on the day. Dylan Brajkovich led the charge, winning both Open A and College Boy on the day. Brajkovich has been racing the local scene on and off since the early days and proved today that he still has the “umph” to get it done, even in a heat wave. Another longtime local, Stanton Bowers, has been pushing this year, and he finished at the top of the heap in both premier amateur divisions. NJ native Michael Giovanniello took a pair of wins in the School Boy divisions, and Brian Espinoza pulled off a pair of wins racing in the mini ranks. All in all, it was a great day of racing at the Pagoda Motorcycle Club. One round remains in late July back at Sleepy Hollow for this local series, so by the time you’re reading this, it will all be in the record books. Jesse Greomm:

A Chance at Living the Dream By: Joann Hauser

Jesse Greomm, age 21, from Forked River, N.J., was chosen to represent the USA at the next International SixDay National Enduro (ISDE), which will take place in Sardega, Italy. This annual event runs from Monday, Sept. 30, to Saturday, Oct. 5, and is known as the “Motorcycle Olympics.” This will be the second year that Jesse will be attending the ISDE. Last year it was only by chance that he was given that opportunity when he was asked to fill in for an injured rider on the Junior Team at the last minute. That team brought home a bronze medal for the USA, coming in third place behind France and Great Britain. All the expenses were covered for last year’s trip, but this year the cost will only be partly covered. It is very costly to attend the ISDE, but it is a great opportunity for any rider who is chosen to be a part of it. In order to be asked to attend this prestigious event, riders have to at least be in the top 15 of the National Enduro Series. To be chosen for the USA out of many other great professional riders, Jesse feels it’s a great opportunity to represent our country and wants to do his very best to return home with another medal for the USA. It’s an opportunity that he would not want to pass up, and with the cost of this trip being very expensive, he is doing everything he can to raise money to attend. He is selling T-shirts and wristbands, which are both available online. Raffle tickets for an Apple iPad will be sold at the Rattlesnake National Enduro. The ECEA and Mike Beeler, along with his family, will be hosting a Family Fun BBQ day to help raise money for Jesse. You do not need to be a member of the ECEA to attend. Make sure you bring your bikes! I recently had a chance to speak to Jesse and ask him how he felt about having this opportunity for the second time. He said, “It will be an awesome experience, one I can’t pass up and I want to be a part of. It means a great deal to me, and it’s like living a dream.” After talking with Jesse, I could see and feel just how important and how much this meant to him. I also asked how we can all help him reach his goal, and he said that buying T-shirts on his website and making donations to a special a PayPal account that has been set up are two main ways. You can also buy raffle tickets for an Apple iPad at the Rattle Snake National Enduro on Sunday, July 28. Also, come out and attend the Family Fun BBQ, which will be located at 1974 S. Black Horse Pike, Williamstown, NJ 08094 on Sunday, Aug. 11, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The gate fee is $5.00 per person and for the riders $20.00 per person. The rider entry fee includes a meal ticket and a raffle ticket. Here is a little more information on how you can help: You can buy the T-Shirts at: http:jessegroemmisdeshirts.bigcartel.com Along with that, you can send donations to him through his PayPal account: Jessepower29@aim.com. So come take a part in helping Jesse live the dream and be able to attend the Six-Day International Enduro in Italy.

Help Save AMA-Sanctioned Enduro Events in New Jersey! Are you concerned about getting access to recreational trails for American Motorcyclist Association-sanctioned enduro events in New Jersey state parks? If so, please take a few moments to sign the AMA’s electronic petition and tell Gov. Chris Christie that a recent shift in policy by local forest managers has led to responsible users of the forest being denied access to existing trails. This policy threatens the survival of a sport that contributes to the economies of New Jersey’s small towns and communities. Left unchecked, these policies will end the long history of enduros in the state and prevent New Jersey from benefiting from the economic contributions that come as a result. By signing the petition, you will encourage the governor to urge state forest managers to strike a balance between conservation and responsible motorized use. http://capwiz.com/amacycle/issues/alert/?alertid=62725751

Reading Off-Road Riders June 29-30, 2013 • By: Joann Hauser

The ECEA’s round five of their 2013 Hare Scramble Series was hosted by the Reading Off-Road Riders. This two-day event took place in Tamaqua, Pa. The event started off on Saturday morning with free riding lessons offered to the Pee-Wee and Youth by Rich Lafferty’s Riding School. This was a great way for the kids to learn some safety and skills before the race. The 50cc group was the first to start, with the overall top three riders being Joesph Rainone, who came in first; Paul Best in second, and Nathan Dulaney in third. The Pee-Wee division was the next up to race with the overall top riders being Joseph Scotto in first, Wayne Cox in second, and Max Fernandez rounding out the podium. The last race for Saturday was the Youth division. The top overall rider was Kyle Tino, with Hunter Harlos finishing second and William Sigler third. It was certainly a great fun-filled day of racing for the kids. On Sunday morning the riders geared up for the 7.2-mile course, and the weather conditions were great and the traction plentiful.

George Leuschal racing C-lite 200 takes first in the morning overall. Richard Lafferty offers free riding lessons to the Pee-Wee and Youth at RORR Harescramble before the race on Saturday.

The flag dropped at 10 a.m. for the first group of riders on the day. After an hour and a half of racing, the overall top riders were George Leuschal racing C-lite 200, Tyler Tayvinsky from the Schoolboy class and Rick Cornelius Jr., who was also in C-lite 200 division. As the afternoon main event approached, the racing conditions were still good. The race got started on time at 1 p.m., with William Schoenburg getting the hole shot. As the riders got into the second lap, the weather conditions worsened and rain began to fall, making the 8.7-mile course extremely tricky to ride. After two hours of racing, the overall top riders of the main event were Kyle Mcdonal in first, William Schoenburg in second, and Ethane Walters in third. A special thanks goes out to Tamaqua Hose Company #1, who provided great food for this two-day event hosted by the Reading Off Road Riders, along with the racers and their families. View complete event results and learn how you can compete in an ECEA event at www.ECEA.org.

Kyle Mcdonal AA took first place overall in the afternoon main event.

It was a great day of riding for Joesph Scotto who finished first O/A in the Pee-Wee division.

Ocean County “Dirt Devils” 4-H Club in Pa By: Dennis Felty

The May 18 tour for the New Jersey “Dirt Devils” 4-H Club began Friday evening at Big Al’s Wheel to Wheel Race Track in Dornsife, Pa. The group assembled on site to set up camp for the evening, and group leaders Kenney and Leslie Monternaro arrived at 11:30 p.m. The group spent an enjoyable evening beside a fire, preparing for the weekend events, and with a 10 a.m. start time on Saturday morning, they soon retired to their campers for the evening. The group started their morning by preparing breakfast and then proceeded to load up their equipment to head out to the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area (AOAA) trailhead. Since the facility is currently in the pre-construction stage, prior consent was required and approved by the authority. Upon arrival at the trailhead there were events already in action as a DCNR youth safety course was already happening and a Land Rover group was staging for a tour of their own. Approved tour guides Dennis Felty and Robert Smith led the way for a group photo, and with all the preliminary stuff out of the way, we could finally get on with the tour of the Western Reserve of the property. Our first stop was at a large formation of rocks on top of the Mahanoy Mountain called Cornflake Rock. This allowed the riders a full view of the valley below, but this was only a small preview of the attractions to come. After a short break the group proceeded to an overlook which allows a spectacular view of Shamokin, Coal Township, the Caves, and the

Whaleback. A lunch break that was being prepared by Bubba’s Catering was already underway at the Heart Lake Area as we would be arriving for our lunch stop destination. Through a series of trails, including the pineys, our staff photographer Tabb Felty was able to get ahead of the group and jump off to get a series of photos with the group in action as they raced through stretches of whoop roads and dodged or plowed through puddles. Once the group reached Heart Lake, they were able to enjoy the burgers, hot dogs and city chicken (ask for this at your local deli counter, as this is a delicious treat only found here in the Coal Region) prepared by Bubba himself. As the group settled in, the horse shoe pit was seeing quite a bit of action with the clanking of attempted ringers. We informed the group that our next destination would be an area called “The Sands,” a popular play area that has features for all different experience levels of riders. As the youthful riders returned to our staging point after much frolic and fun, we were off through the maze of trails to a location known as the Projects. The Projects is a large pond surrounded by gently sloping banks, accessible for fishing and picnicking. Here Tabb lined up each family in front of the pond with their quads and dirt bikes for individual family photos. As we all know, riding is not complete without some mud, and since we were into the better part of the afternoon, it was time to visit Mud Road. This is a name appropriate for this stretch of clay-based mud pits that will test the abilities of any machine. As many of the riders played in the soupy area, a few were feeling a little brave and attempted some of the more challenging holes. As we laughed at the attempts and the riders who were stuck, winch cables started to come out to tow the riders out of the hole. This concluded a full day of events with no breakdowns, so we headed back to the trailhead to load up and head back to the track to camp for the evening. The group was anxious and wanted to know what the next day would hold, so Sunday morning came, and the group reassembled for the second day for the tour of the Eastern Reserve of the AOAA property. This portion of the property will be utilized as the base of the project with a trailhead, parking area, and visitor center. Our tour for the day was to take us to an old railroad grade in the Helfenstein area. The group moved at a swift pace today as the railroad grade provided an opportunity to shift a few gears. The enthusiasm was present as we took a break at the end along Gap Road, stating that they sure liked the trail. What better way to head back as this is the outer end of the property than to ride it back the other way? Up and over the mountain trail we went and back into the maze of trails which were developed for a Hare Scramble. As all great rides must, this one was approaching the end, and we wanted to have a final cookout in the afternoon. As all loaded their trailers, the farewells and goodbyes were shared, as we all had enjoyed a wonderful weekend ride at AOAA here in the heart of Coal Country.

The Jeeps Came, Saw and Conquered During 3rd Annual Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival It was a Jeep homecoming like no other. The third annual Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival was held June 14 to 16 in Butler, Pa., the birthplace of the Jeep. The wildly popular event featured a new location, additional activities and more family fun over Father’s Day weekend. A whopping 1,557 registered Jeeps from 31 states and Canada rolled in to Cooper’s Lake Campground for the festival. Thousands more Jeeps filled the parking lots for the three-day event that offered something for all types of Jeep aficionados, from those who appreciate military Jeeps from the 1940s to those who can’t wait to go off-road in their lifted and accessorized Jeeps. “We received fantastic feedback from the Jeepers who joined us this year,” said Patti Jo Lambert, festival director. “More Jeeps participated than before, and we had about 16,000 people over the three days at Cooper’s Lake, plus 20,000 who joined us for the Jeep Invasion street party in Downtown Butler. It appears Jeep enthusiasts agree that celebrating the father of all Jeeps over Father’s Day weekend is a great idea, and they can’t wait to come back next year to make the festival part of their holiday tradition.” The festival expanded into three days this year to ensure more fun with family and friends while celebrating the Jeep’s birthplace.

New additions like the Glacial Interpretive Driving Tour, Little Jeeper’s Show ‘n Shine, expanded Show ‘n Shine classes, Saturday night bonfire and Father’s Day Breakfast were great complements to the popular off-road playground, mud pit, rock crawl, on-site trail rides, World War II (WWII) encampment, Mystery Road Rally and more. One of the highlights of the new location was bigger and better on-site trails that gave both stock and intermediate Jeep offroaders the chance to challenge themselves and their Jeeps. Each trail was nearly triple the length of those offered at the previous location. Some Jeep owners who had properly equipped Jeeps even had the chance to try a few extreme obstacles on select trails. The festival offered more awards than ever before, too. In addition to trophies awarded for the Show ‘n Shine and Ruff ‘n Tuff competitions, top finishers in the Jeep Team Challenge and Mystery Road Rally could also earn some hardware. A few Jeep clubs also partnered with the festival and coordinated slow crawl, RTI Ramp and Teeter Totter competitions that gave recognition to the best male and female participant. Because the Bantam Jeep is the world’s original Jeep, created in Butler by the American Bantam Car Company in 1940, the Jeep’s heritage plays a prominent role in the festival. A WWII encampment highlighted how these off-road marvels helped to win the war. Nearby, a history exhibited detailed how the Jeep was created in Butler. Adjacent to the exhibit was a not-to-miss display of Jeeps through the decades – about 20 Jeeps representing each of the eight decades of this popular vehicle. Crowds packed the exhibit building to catch a glimpse of some rare vehicles. Several owners were even present to talk about the restoration, originality or uniqueness of the various Jeeps. “It’s always exciting to see the sheer number of Jeeps each year,” said Lambert. “A walk through the Show ‘n Shine area is all it takes to understand just how many different Jeeps have been created over the past 70 years. Jeeps of all shapes, sizes and colors are displayed, and it’s so much fun to talk to everyone about the passion each owner has for his or her Jeep.” Mark your calendar to attend the next festival on Friday to Sunday, June 13 to 15, 2014. Check out the event’s website, www.bantamjeepfestival.com, to see highlights of the 2013 event. Be sure to register for the email list so you can be among the first to learn about what is in store for the next festival. If you love Jeeps, this is one place you need to be.

A & A Auto Stores Summer 4-Wheel Jamboree Nationals Bloomsburg Fairgrounds • July 12-14. 2013

The A & A Auto Stores Summer 4-Wheel Jamboree Nationals is part of the Lucas Oil 4-Wheel Jamboree Series with four events across the US. Featured events at the Jamboree included thousands of 4 x 4 owners who competed for trophies in the Dick Cepek show-n-shine competitions, NMRO Mud drag racing, Mickey Thompson Tires Tough Trucks Challenge®, General Tire Monster Truck Thunder Drags and more. 2013 marks the 26th year that Bloomsburg has hosted the 4-Wheel Jamboree. KYMCO USA, Inc. was also on hand to offer a continuous, interactive ride-and-drive demo event. A special course was constructed to simulate the hills, obstacles, tight turns, and other off-road fun that one would encounter while out on the trail. KYMCO USA offers five side-by-side models plus 14 ATVs from 700cc to 70cc. KYMCO’s roots in motorsports go back to its founding in 1963. Today, KYMCO has over 600 dealerships in the U.S. Check them out online at: www.kymcousa.com. Also at the show we found Kid KJ and the World’s Youngest Monster Truck Team. The team consisted of four young drivers ranging in age from 8 to 16 and the team proved to be a crowd favorite not only for kids, but for adults as well. Joining Kid KJ and his team we found 90,000 pounds of monster truck furry including BIGFOOT, and 10 other top pro monster trucks. In addition to the monster trucks, families could feast their eyes on thousands of 4x4’s from all over the country; there was a fireworks spectacular Saturday night, burnout competitions, mud racing, vendor displays and so much more. To see more action from the show you can check out the Rec Rider Facebook page or head on over to: www.4wheeljamboree.com

This year the event is part of the recently formed East Coast Flat Track Series, and it was almost a perfect day for this classic pea gravel event. Also, scoring double wins were Tyler Scott who again topped the 50 Chain and had a close battle in the 65; Brandon Price easily won the 250 Amateur and battled for the 250 Sportsman. Kevin Varnes made one of his occasional starts, winning the 30+ and 500 2 Valve, with his son Ryan winning the Open B final. Higgins grabbed the lead at the start of the Open A final and checked out. Austin Luczak headed up the battle for second with Justin Velicky, Cory Strickler and Cory Texter right behind. Strickler started towards the front as he took third off two on lap two, with Texter taking fourth on the fourth lap. About the eighth lap, Strickler went into second with Texter taking third the following lap. With Higgins half a straight ahead, the Corys were close for second. With the track developing a black groove, Texter said he was getting the lead at the start and backed it up, putting the Spa and Pool Place Kawasaki of injured Ryan Connelly in front at the start of the 450 Pro Sportsman, leading Strickler, Higgins, Chad Cose and Evan Baer. The front five stayed about a length apart from each other over the first half. Higgins slipped under Strickler on the fourth lap and got by Texter off four on the 10th lap. The Corys battled closely for second. After winning the 250 Amateur by half a straight, Brandon Price came back and passed early leader Roy Miller on the outside of turn two on the second lap. Brody Miller and a typical slow-starting Tristan Avery dropped Kyle McGrane back on the third lap, and Avery got by the Miller brothers for second down the back straight on the fourth lap. Avery’s guest from Australia, Tom Edwards, took the lead at the start of the 85 final, with Doug Cook taking second from Landon Kawczak into three on the second lap. Over the rest of the final, Cook almost got by several times going into one or three, but not enough. After jumping out to a straight margin win in the 50 Chain Drive, Tyler Scott had a hard-fought three-way battle for the 65 win. Logan McGrane led Scott and Cook, with Scott finally taking the lead at the start of the fifth lap after they exited four three wide. Cook took Buzzy Skiles and Tom Majeski renewed a 35-plus-year battle in the 50+ final. Majeski led Skiles, Lowell Wherley, Jay Maher and Tom Goodford out of two, with Skiles taking the lead off two the next lap as the front two pulled away. Majeski retook first on the fourth lap, but Skiles had enough left to take the lead down the back stretch on the seventh lap.

HERE WE GO AGAIN! The River

Chaplain’s Corner Hello Race Fans,

It’s true that if you step back and lay down outside at night, just seeing the stars will declare to you that there is an intelligent Creator. Friends, God does exist, and he made us for friendship. We are called to be friends with God. The Bible is a book that has been tested over the years and found to be true. Maybe you have not thought on God in a while. Friend, I want you to know this verse from the Bible. John 17:3 – “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” You can know God on a daily basis; you can talk to Him and have Him talk back to you. It’s like having a two-way radio inside your head. He wants to be your friend so much that he said in Romans 5:8 – “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” You see, the God of the Bible, the only true God, wanted to be friends with you so much that he went to extreme measures to make that possible. If you’re old enough, you may have a memory of liking a girl or boy and pursuing after her or him. I remember when I met my wife, we spent every weekend together. And we would drive long distances to see each other and get to know each other better. That’s how God is with us. He wants to be a close friend: not a judge or an enemy, but a father who does right and wants to lead you in the right direction. A good Father who wants what is best for you. Friend, please call on God today. He loves you. All by the Grace of Jesus Christ and the Leading of the Holy Spirit, Zachary A. Camp

The reason we have one of the best Hare Scramble tracks in the district and the ECEA is also the reason we are rescheduling the event, again. In one word: RIVER. The original “Down by the River” Hare Scramble date was to be June 23. As I predicted in the June issue of Rec Rider, the meteorologists were not 100 percent correct. We actually received heavier and more rain than they had predicted. This caused the river to reach a crest of about 13 feet just days before the event. We went to work trying to find a makeup date, which is a project in itself, trying to find a date not competing against other clubs and races, and the next best date was July 14. The meteorologists were at it again, warning, “The river is going up; the river is going up!” This time, though, we did not receive much rain at all, and we were expecting a dry and possibly dusty event. But the weather gods, which we thought were on our side for the new date, decided to move a little farther north and drop heavy rain on the Pennsylvania/New York border and upstate New York. The problem with that was all the water had to go somewhere, which ended up being the river that runs alongside our awesome track. Well, it is awesome when it is not under water! As I am writing this, we are four days away from our make-up date, and the track is still partially submerged. The crest was a few days ago at about 18 feet. At today’s level, some of the track and the whole infield section are still under water. The parking lot is not under water, but if we stand there for two or three minutes, your feet will be under water! So we are at it again. The new tentative make-up date is Sunday, Aug. 25. The Back Mountain Enduro Riders hope this date works with everyone’s schedules, and we hope you can make it to our event. As a lot of Hare Scramble racers from the northeast already know, if the weather gods are on our side, we have one of the best Hare Scramble tracks in the east. After this spring, I do not think the weather will hurt us or our sport any more this season, so try to plan on being there. Our club will put forth the best effort possible to promote a great Hare Scramble regardless of the weather as long as there is no danger to the participants or spectators. We are going to have a busy late summer and fall with our schedule; the District 6 tentative date is Aug. 25, followed by the dual sport event “Lawton 100” on Sunday, Sept. 8, and then the ECEA Hare Scramble on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 21 and 22. For updates, please check our web site, www.bmer.org, or become a friend on facebook at Back Mountain Enduro Riders. As always, until next issue, ride safe and ride hard!

The ATR has completed all the paperwork and has become an official nonprofit club and is now taking open enrollment for new members. Go online to the below link for an application. Please print it out, sign, and send in. The membership fees will be used to pay for insurance for the group, which in turn will allow us to partner with the AOAA in obtaining some sort of pass to access the AOAA until the end of the year. This pass will only be available to ATR members, and all the funds raised through the purchase of the passes will be donated to the park as working capital to help it get officially opened. The ATR is in a position right now to become one of the largest clubs in the area! The opportunities are endless on what this club can do, and I assure you that being a member of the ATR will have its benefits. All members will receive a card in the mail with their member number, and I’m also hoping to include an ATR logo sticker that you can proudly show off on your helmet, quad, bike, etc. Feel free to send an email to all your riding buddies letting them know we are now taking members. MDRA 6 and 7 • July 13-14, 2013 • By: Jim Bull Photo.com Mid July took us to Shippensburg, Pa in an all out heat wave. Props to the racers and all involved for coming out in this heat to do what you love to do. I’m not sure I have what it takes to gear up and compete in this stuff but I’m certainly glad that you do. Of course you couldn’t ask for better weather if you’re off to Loretta’s this year. This is normal weather for national time so maybe it’s a blessing in disguise. The 45 plus group and the Women’s division would lead us off on this day on a split gate. Brad Stepp would bring home the win in 45 with Raeslee Weimer taking the checkers in the 250 B Overall Finish Positions 1. Arie Reachard 2. Ricky Deck 3. Matthew Melhorn 4. Billy Kwiecinski 5. Women’s group. Next up Open A would take to the track with local Pro Broc Schmelyun leading the charge. You can definitely tell that Broc has been competing on the big stage. He was always fast but his riding style has smoothed out and you can see the focus when he’s on the track. Congrats to Broc on his recent accomplishments and we wish you the best out there. You can see a few results here and you can get the rest along with images from the day at: www.RecRider.com Plus 40 B/C Overall Finish Positions 1. Jim Dobbs 2. Jeffrey Groff 3. Thomas Nagle 4.
