Letter from the Editor

Hello all and Happy Labor Day to you. So I’m thinking: Is this a day we get to celebrate our jobs or a day we get to celebrate getting a day away from our jobs? My curious nature led me to the Internet, where, of course, everything is true, and this is what I found.

Labor Day: How It Came About and What It Means From the United States Department of Labor Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Very cool: a holiday with real meaning. And what does this have to do with Rec Rider you ask? Well, nothing really, but I have to talk about something. The economic achievements of American workers are very important, so I thought I would share it here. So hey, take that extra day off and celebrate your achievements by going riding somewhere or by attending an event or supporting the sport in some way. Please make sure you include your family, as they work hard too and may love the sport as much as you do. In this issue, you will find lots of racing action, along with poker runs, family reunions, and some really cool upcoming events. The Rec Riding Crew was out on the road a lot in August and will be again in September. Find us at the Carlisle Sports and Outdoor Nationals in the beginning of the month, then travel north with us to the New York ATV Expo later on in September. If you’re looking for somewhere new to ride, they offer hundreds of miles of trails for a nominal trail permit fee. You can find details in their ad inside. As always, we ask that you like our Facebook page and tell your friends all about us. For just a few dollars a year, you get us shipped right to your door - well the magazine, that is; not really us. Anyhow, we’ll see you out on the trail, and thanks for reading.

Sleepy Hollow MX Park

Mainline Series / Pro-Am • July 28, 2013 • By: ISO-Photo.com I woke early Sunday morning prepared for a great day at Sleepy Hollow for Round # 8 of the All Balls Mainline Pro-Am Series race. To my surprise as I peered out the window there was no bright sunshine on the horizon, only thick dense fog and drizzle. My first thought was to email a few riders that I knew were there for their assessment on the weather and track conditions. All responses came back light rain and a lot of mud from the heavy thunderstorms late Saturday evening. Although I was running a little behind on the time, I grabbed my gear and cooler and out the door I went. Traveling out I-78 several trailers and haulers passed me by. I guess a lot of people held out till the last minute on making a decision to race. I arrived at Sleepy a little later than normal but with the extra track grooming time needed I had a chance to talk to some of the riders about the conditions. Some were reluctant at first but in the end most toughed it out. Practice was a little sloppy but by the end of practice the bikes laid down some good lines and the surface had dried out. With money purses and pro am points on the line riders arrived from several nearby states like NJ, MD, and VA and from as far away as California. Open A class was first up at the gate, loaded with some of the best riders in the area launched off into turn one. Dylan Brajkovich and Corey and Jeremiah Nickeson mix it up in 30+ Vet.

Addison Kramer fought for the holeshot. Kramer won the battle and rode out front on a clean track winning moto 1. In the second moto Brajkovich scored the win giving him the overall on the day. Joey Deneen was the overall winner in 250 A but was challenged closely by Addison Kramer. In the 2nd moto Kramer got tangled up in a first turn pile up causing him a poor start. He still managed to pick off riders and salvage a 6th place finish in the moto and 3rd overall. Jay Jajich 88 from Hummelstown, Pa rode flawlessly with two moto wins in Open B and a 3rd and 1st in School Boy 2 winning both classes. Great rides were also showcased by Michael Conallie in 50cc (4 - 6) stock and Cole Bader 50cc (7 – 8) stock. Both swept their motos for the class wins. By late afternoon the racing was over and this closed the Mainline Series for 2013. Only the award ceremonies are left which will be held at Sleepy Hollow on Saturday 8/24. It was another good season of racing. Thank you for coming out and supporting the local tracks and sponsors in 2013. There is still a lot of racing to go yet so check the schedule and attend a late summer race. View Results from today’s race at: www.recrider.com and get all your Mainline Series photos by contacting John Sherer at: www.Iso-Photo.com First turn mayhem – 250 A start.

Magic marker numbers worked for Corey Teasdale.

Jay Jajich dominated Open B and School Boy.

July 20-21 here at the Line Mountain, the Four-Wheel Drive Association’s home-based track in Dornsife, Pa., was a weekend slated for a full schedule of events featuring the “Coal Bucket,” also known as the “Fast Miler,” which is East Coast Four Wheel Drive Association’s sanctioned dirt drags and short-course obstacle race. Saturday morning, with a field of 72 entrants in the ATC, ATV, motorcycle, and UTV category, was the start of fast-paced action in this six-lap race. Next on the agenda, with 129 entrants, were the four-wheel drive truck and buggy classes for a ten-lap feature, with Jordan Poploskie taking the win by three seconds. Sunday morning began with the grooming of the start-finish line from Saturday’s race to host East Coast four-wheel drive sanctioned racing. The sounds of high powered V8s configured with paddle tires were evident as we assembled above the 100-yard track. Through double elimination rounds, each class was to produce its winners. After a one-hour intermission to reconstruct the track, we were set for the sanctioned figure-8 short-course obstacle race. Two racers assembled on a startfinish line in opposite directions. When the flag dropped, the outside lane headed up into the short-course track as the inside lane came down the straightaway and around a positioned barrel. They then crossed into the outside lane, heading to the short course as the other competitor exited and was completing the loop around the barrel. This produced exciting finishes as both competitors charged for the finish line. A non-sanctioned Line Mountain portion finalized the weekend as the racers competed for an overall finish. Good Intent Hose Company

Third Annual ATV Run • Llewellyn, Pa • August 3 – 4, 2013 Early August took the Rec Riding Crew back to coal country and the site of the third annual fundraiser for the Good Intent Hose Company No. 1. This was our third trip back for this ride; thanks to our gracious hosts, we can say that we’ve been there since the beginning. Props go out to all who help organize this event, as it has grown like crazy. I believe in the first year, there were just fewer than 500 riders. In 2013, over 1,500 hearty souls came out to partake in the pouring rain. Now, don’t get me wrong; there were breaks in the rain, but rain it did. Friday night, we were actually cut a break. DJ Hit Man Jeff entertained the crowd around the bonfire, and we enjoyed an all-youcould-eat spaghetti supper on Friday and an equally good breakfast on Saturday morning. The rains came overnight, but so did the crowd. I was amazed as they continued to roll in. I guess that the crew here has earned

themselves a great reputation, and the off-road community wants to come out and support the rest of the community. I couldn’t say for sure, but I’d be willing to bet that a ride like this goes a long way in funding the fire and rescue for the year. I would bet that if more communities in Pennsylvania would do the same, they would get the same great results. But then again, maybe not; I hear that the Good Intent knows how to get the job done. Either way, the ride was a success. We all got a little muddy, and the fire company made a little dough. A win-win for all. The fire company asked me to thank the local landowners for their support; without them, the ride could not go on. Stay tuned to our pages. I’d be willing to bet that there’s going to be a fourth annual, and it should be bigger and better than ever. Please enjoy some images, and we’ll see you next year.

Nick and Popeye came out to enjoy the ride.

Amish Off-Road was on hand.

Shot Gun Harescramble

|

September 2013

17

August 3-4, 2013 • By: Joann Hauser

The Shot Gun Harescramble was an incredible event with over 200 riders taking to the rocky trails and streams. High Mountain Dirt Riders (HMDR) truly put on a spectacular race, along with South Side Conservation Club, which allowed this event to take place on its property. This was a two-day event. Pee-wee and youths hit the trails on Saturday, where the conditions were not as pleasant as on Sunday. The rain started off this event, making the trails pretty tough on the young racers, but they were able to conquer and complete this technical course even in the rain. Over all winners of Saturday’s race were Youth - first place, Kyle Tino; second place, William Sigler; and third place, Anthony Kropp. Pee-Wee winners were Max Fernandez, first place; Julian Wojcik, second room; and Wayne Cox IV, third place. Overall 50s winner was Joseph Rainone, with Nathan Dulaney in second place and Ryan Gribbin in third place. In the Girls 11-15 division were Victoria Rawden in first and Marina Cancro in second. Sunday’s race went off without any hitches: the sun was shining, and conditions were ideal. The first race of the day was the morning race, with the overall winners being Tyler Tayvinsky in first place riding Schoolboy, George Leuschal in second place with C-Lite 200, and Anthony Sutton,

who rides Sportsman class, in third place. Taking first for the morning women’s race was Patricia Blair. As the morning racers rolled in, they were exhausted from their hour-and-a-half race. It was soon time for the main event. The crew from HMDR decided to lengthen the already tricky and technical course while increasing the ride time to two hours. Taking home the Shot Gun was Jerod Stoner (AA) riding on a KTM, with his fastest lap time being 1:07:25. Second place for the overall was Ryder Lafferty (AA), with his fastest lap time being 1:08:11, and third place overall went to Jason Sipe, who was riding A Open with a fast lap time of 1:09:00. We certainly have to give a big thanks to High Mountain Dirt Riders for a great event and a special thanks to South Side Conservation Club for allowing the HMDR and the ECEA the use of the land to hold such an event. I spoke personally to the treasurer of the club and his wife and learned a lot about their club and the purpose of the land. It was spectacular of them to allow us to have this event on this property. For what they’re doing with the land conservation-wise, thank you to South Side Conservation Club.

Central Mountains ATV Association has been riding the trails hard this summer. We did a Fourth of July long weekend ride at Mountain Ridge ATV Trails. We did a lot of great riding on their trail system around the Wind Mills, and they also provided a night ride with a bonfire afterward. Watching all the different firework displays in a 100-mile radius all three nights was a little hard on the neck, but the fireworks were enjoyable. The club then went to Snow Shoe Rails to Trails’ 11th annual chicken barbecue ride sponsored by Bestline Power Sports. We had a great ride, and the rain in the morning just helped keep the dust down. As always, Larry and Trilby Mayes and their team did a wonderful job making sure the event went problem free. Some of us spent the weekend in the Gillentown parking lot and rode the trails all weekend long. We checked out the new connector trail that DCNR relocated, which was a great improvement from the original section of trail on the east side of the railroad bed. We did find that some of the trail on the west side of the railroad bed is starting to wash out and needs some repair. A big thank you goes out to DCNR for improving the connector trail and making it safer to ride on. Our next adventure was to the Fishers ATV World Reunion at Rock Run. We had a great time attending all the different events and riding the trails. Brian Fisher, along with his family and crew, did a great job putting on the reunion and even spent time with some of our club members. We are all looking forward to next year’s reunion. CMATVA has our 10th Annual Rodeo in Allport, Pa., coming up on Saturday, Sept. 28, and we are looking forward to seeing everyone compete in the six different events. We are changing up the obstacle course this year and would like to hear your feedback on any other changes you might want to see. Please check out our website at cmatva.org and come join us on one of our rides and see what our club is all about. Thank you, Henry J Sorgen IV President of CMATV Assoc. Phone: 570-660-0017

18th Annual All Breeds Jeep Show York Fairgrounds • July 20 – 21, 2013

The All Breeds Jeep Show went down this year despite an ugly day of weather during setup for the show. The rains came but more so the winds on the Friday before the show. Needless to say, the show did go on under bright skies on both Saturday and Sunday. There were vendors galore and lots of cool Jeeps on display. In

addition, the Rock Crawl course was busy all weekend. The show is managed by members of the PA Jeeps Club, who do a great job and work endless hours to pull things off. The volunteers were everywhere, and the show went off without a hitch. You can check them out online at www.pajeeps.org.

6th Annual Fisher’s ATV World Reunion Rock Run Recreation Area • August 8 – 11, 2013 We made it back again. Yes, this was the third year that we got to spend some time at Brian and Melissa Fisher’s Family Reunion, and each year it seems to get better and better. We arrived Thursday afternoon, and the dust control mechanism – the rain, that is - had just churned into effect. Now, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, because if you’re like most off-road riders, you’d rather play in the mud than drive off a cliff in the dust. Anyhow, it was only temporary and just enough to kill the dust for the weekend. The party got going anyway, and the riders began to arrive. Actually, there was a good crowd on hand by Thursday evening, just in time for the Mud Club Party. Derek Jones kicked off the night with his great mix of acoustic entertainment, followed by some stage time with Brian and a nice warm bonfire. Friday, we awoke to a great breakfast that was offered by the staff at Rock Run, and then it was off to vendor row. Demo rides were available from companies like Kymco, Yamaha, and John Deere, and many of the industry’s greatest products were on hand for the 3,000-plus attendees. I never did hear a

final number, but I know it was a bunch. The Quad Boss Showdown also kicked off on Friday afternoon. This was a timed obstacle course where riders from different classes attacked the course to win prizes at the end of the weekend. The entertainment was red-hot this year, with up-and-comer Derek Jones kicking off the Friday night concert. Tyler Farr “Red Neck Crazy” then hit the stage to rock the crowd late into the night. There was also a night ride sponsored by Wood’s Powr Grip Company. This is a great light source if you want to ride at night. On Saturday, the event rolled on with meet-and-greets with the Fishers, kids’ rides, and more Quad Boss Showdown. There was human mud pit racing, tug-of-war, and ball toss into the mud (good stuff). AC/DC tribute band Black and Black finished off the night with its awesome rock and roll show. Sunday was a wind-down-and-travel day, and the memories were logged from another great year with the Fishers and all their fans. Thanks to all who made it possible, and, as Brian Fisher would say – we’ll see ya’ll next year. The crowd went wild for Tyler Farr.

Fish Fans come out when the sun goes down.

Everybody wants to join the Rec Rider Army.

Derek Jones put on a great show for the crowd. The oldest Fish Fan at the party was 89.

With three events in the next six weeks, the Back Mountain Enduro Riders are very busy preparing. That being said, once again we took time out of our busy schedule to try to help out in the community. The 32nd Annual Wilkes Barre Triathlon was held Aug. 18 in the Back Mountain. This year, as in every year, almost all club members and friends with street motorcycles showed up to help patrol the bicycle segment of the event. The athletes first swam 1.5 kilometers in Harvey’s Lake, then mounted their bicycles to ride 40 kilometers before running 11 kilometers. During the bicycle portion, we rode with the athletes making sure they stayed safe and assisting with mechanical or physical problems that may have occurred. For the third year in a row we are very proud to have a local triathlete, Sean Robbins from Shavertown, take the overall victory. Way to go, Sean! On to the racing! By the time you read this article, our “spring” Hare Scramble will be over. At press time, the event was slated for Aug. 25, and photos will be posted at our Facebook page, which is Back Mountain Enduro Riders. Become a friend! Two weeks after the Hare Scramble is our big bike friendly, with awesome hero sections, Dual Sport Ride, and the “Lawton 100.” The date is Sunday, Sept. 8. Camping will be free the night before the ride, and a halfway lunch will be included. Everyone who attends will have the opportunity for a great, no-pressure ride with new and old friends. Then, two weeks after that on the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 28 and 29, will be our ECEA points paying Hare Scramble. Sorry to all of you Quad racers: the ECEA events are open to motorcycles only. We do use the same great “Down by the River” location, which riders love. Thanks to everyone for reading this awesome magazine, which gives clubs like the Back Mountain Enduro Riders the chance to get the word out about our events. Remember, up-to-date information can be found on our Facebook page and on our website, www.bmer.org. Until next issue, ride safe and ride hard!

PaOHV RecRider Article

www.recrider.com

SCORE - Rules of the Trail By: Denny Mann

In 2000, the Pennsylvania Off Highway Vehicles Association (PaOHV) was one year old and having growing pains. The public’s negative image of motorized trail users created more problems than any other issue for PaOHV. ATVs and dirt bikes operated by both adults and children with no respect for the laws hindered PaOHV’s success with law makers. Newspapers were full of stories of youngsters being hurt while riding. Townships jumped at the chance to put an end to the illegal riding. Before any progress could be made in the area of riding opportunities, motorized trail riders needed to improve their image. It was clear to PaOHV that education could help improve the user group’s image with the public, so PaOHV devolped the Sensible Courteous Off Road Enthusiast (SCORE) program. SCORE promoted awareness of the environment and respect for other users of public and private lands when engaging in off highway recreation. As time progressed, SCORE evolved and the promotion of legal riding areas was added to the program’s focus. PaOHV attended motorized events across Pennsylvania promoting SCORE classes and awareness of legal riding areas. Now in 2013, the SCORE program is evolving once again with the addition of the McNeil simulator and the teaching of riding safety in a classroom environment.* The addition of riding skills to the program will demonstrate and emphasize good trail sense through riding in control. Below is the new list of safe and responsible riding practices in the updated SCORE program, Rules of the Trail. That last one, though, is tough, avoid peer pressure. I must admit that I have given in to peer pressure from time to time. You ask a friend if he or she would like to go for a ride, and the vehicle he or she brings isn’t registered or insured. A trail is closed, and your buddy turns down

• Respect the laws of the riding area and the State • Ride with permission • Let someone know where you are going and when you will return • Ride with others as a group • Maintain equipment with TCLOC prior to riding • Use and maintain a spark arrestor • Wear safety gear • Ride within your abilities and the capability of your vehicle

the closed trail. The new guy comes out riding, and since he is slow, the leader loses him. You take your bike for a test ride without wearing a helmet. Young or old, we are all faced with choices between what is right and wrong. The only people we are fully in control of are ourselves. If the choice is illegal, then speak out and say no. When it comes to the law, avoid guilt by association. It is necessary for each and every one of us to observe safe and responsible riding practices 100 percent of the time, no matter what others think. We can’t pick and choose from the list. Sharing rider ethics is similar to talking politics and religion: teach by example. By demonstrating good rider ethics we will slowly win over others. In review, follow the Rules of the Trail and your actions will speak louder than words. Set a good example for other off-road enthusiasts and stay safe the SCORE way. *The ethics of SCORE and the safety of riding the simulator are now called Rules of the Trail. With the purchase of the McNeil Off-Road Simulator, PaOHV is adding the feeling of OHV operation with the safety of a classroom environment. Students can “ride” on an ATV or dirt bike indoors. Via the hydraulics of the simulator, students experience the feel off-road riding. What a wonderful way to see if your child is ready for motorized recreation without the dangers of motion and speed. The simulator allows the rider to experience the correct riding posture for hills, turns, and stops before the engine is even turned on. This controlled learning environment will be of great value prior to taking the DCNR Youth ATV Safety course. Classes are now being conducted. For more information on Rules of the Trail classes, go to www.PaOHV.org.

Happy Ramblers Motorcycle Club

MDRA Combo Race • August 10-11, 2013 • By: Jim Bull Photo.com A bright, sunny day in early August took us to Happy Ramblers in Hanover, Pa. The track was in great shape, considering that the days prior had brought us lots of rain. This event had a great turnout, with over 400 entries on the day. The action was red hot all day long as the 45-plus group took us to the gate first. The age classes never cease to amaze me, as some of

these guys just seem to go and go and go. They are the iron men of the sport and truly love what they do. They show up week in and week out to bang bars with some of the best in the business. The day moved along well with lots of great racing. Check the top five here and view more photos online at www.JimBullPhoto.com.

Big Al’s Wheel to Wheel Race By: Tabb Felty Pictures • By Tabbs Photography Big Al’s Racetrack in Dornsife, Pa has been having an extremely eventful summer, with nine races taking place in three different categories. I told you all about the car race and the mud bog, but now I’m here to tell you about the wheel to wheel race that took place on July 27.th Now no worries, there are two more of these types of races happening this year, so you still have time to participate. The track was teeming with racers and viewers as the race was approaching its start time, and because of the amount of vehicle types, five classes were formed. Various vehicles made up these classes, anywhere from 6cylinders to modified. And not only were there cars, trucks,

and jeeps, but buggies also participated. Now this wasn’t just a track with two turns and straight-aways, this track had various obstacles that tested the drivers’ skill at every turn; the drivers had to battle each other and the dust to come out on top. Not all the drivers made it through the track; some fell into the mud pit, while others found themselves with flat tires. It was a very exciting and eventful day, not only for the drivers but for the spectators too. It was an amazing day for racing, and as the last race ended it started to pour. It was a great and fun day that you can enjoy with the whole family, so make sure you make it out to the next race.

EC4WDA – Region B

August 3-4, 2013 • Story by: Monte Hayes • Photos by: Schreier Racing Photos The Mason Dixon Fairgrounds in Delta, Pa., was the site for the Columbia Hillclimbers’ 34th annual race. This is the first time EC4WDA has been to this great facility, and the Columbia Hillclimbers really put on an exceptional race. This race was number five on our schedule. With Brad Eroh and the Follin boys, Brian and Kevin, probably in the top three positions, and from there I just don’t know the other positions with the blind points this year. I was unable to attend the race on Saturday, but the talk on Sunday was of Mike Smith rolling for the second time this year. We also had Wayne Rienick and one of our past champions, Eric Stallknecht, also going over. The ladies did not disappoint us, as they also had a past champion, Jen Keim, rolling her new machine. Brandon Wessner looked impressive with a first-place finish in short obstacle and first in short figure 8. Billy Henon looked good in spite of his half-season layoff, and Levi Shank ran very well until he broke a drive shaft. He is looking good for rookie of the year. On Sunday for the long obstacle race the jumps were real rough on the drivers nosing the racers into the dirt; luckily we had no rollovers from the jumps. The only rollover of the day

was in “E” class open division; the lucky racer was John Presto from the Instigator team. Kaylea Boyer from County Line 4X4 came out and really cleaned up “H” class women, with some good hard driving over Heather Eroh from Phantom Racing for first place. In the Open division, the guys from Phantom were on fire, with Brad Eroh in “I” class looking like a sure winner against Wayne Rienick from “In the Circle” until the usually very dependable machine quit and Wayne went on to take first and Brad setted back for second. Jeremy Dietrich of the County Line 4 Wheelers barely got by a much-improved Nate Reimert of Phantom Racing for first in the “H” class open division. Our Junior Racer program with Kirk Shenberger as chairman had a great turnout, with over 30 kids racing in the division from 3 to 15 years old. We had a couple of new local kids from the Lancaster area who participated. We hope to see them again soon. We’ll be back to Kempton on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 5 and 6, for our final race of the year. This race is put on by Region B with different a club handling each event. For additional information, visit our website at: www.ec4wda.org/regionB.

Green Marble Enduro

Three Springs, PA • August 11, 2013 • By: Joann Hauser The Green Marble Enduro took place in Three Springs, Pa., and was hosted by the Green Marble Enduro Riders from Maryland and Virginia. They are several clubs that pull together to host both Enduros and Harescrambles for the ECEA. Approximately 150 riders came to take on this event from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and New York. The trails were ideal, and some a little wet, but with such great weather conditions riders did not seem to mind crossing the creek. Rocket Raceway and the surrounding land owners also took part by allowing a 4-to6-mile section through their properties. The whole Enduro was approximately 80 miles, with a cutoff for the C riders. The grand champion of the GMER Enduro was Jeff Melik (AA), followed by Kyle Bylsma (A250), Jeff Pasqua (AA), Brian Melik (AA), and Brad Bernet (A Open). Thank you, Green Marble Enduro Riders and surrounding land owners who helped make this Enduro possible.

Grand Champion Jeff Melik
