Letter from the Editor
Boo, it’s the scary month! Happy Halloween to everyone out there. Be careful of your little ghouls and goblins as they hit the streets at the end of the month. It’s a jungle out there, and we want them to return home safe to eat up all that delicious candy they collect. So, can you believe it’s fall already? Another year is almost in the books. I know many enjoy this time of year, as the weather is perfect for riding. What it really means however is that winter is on its way. You know the really cold months that are only good for one thing, well maybe two. The first being curling up in front of the fireplace for a long winters nap. The second and maybe the best is to park your wheelers for a few months and head north to do some snowmobiling. Just because it’s cold and snowing doesn’t mean we can’t have some fun. Anyhow, while it’s still warm outside, let’s look inside our pages, where you’ll find lots of great riding, driving, and racing action from around the region. We have poker runs and hare scrambles, motorcycle and truck racing, fundraisers, and other upcoming events and a product review on a really great night riding setup. The list just keeps on going, so make sure you check out every page so you don’t miss a thing. As I write this I think about our trip to the New York ATV Expo on Sept. 21 and 22. You’ll be able to catch that coverage in next month’s issue. Last year, it rained sideways while we were there. They called it lake-effect rain. I guess I’m sheltered; I had never heard the term. Snow, yes, but rain, no. Then next month the crew will be headed the other direction to the Hatfield and McCoy TrailFest. Never fret: If you don’t like to travel, check out our Where to Ride and Upcoming Event sections. There is still plenty of great riding close to home. Just make sure you watch for seasonal trail closings and the like. That will about do it for now. We’ll see you out on the trail, and thanks for reading.

June was a great month for the Hudson Valley 4 Wheelers (HV4W). Through a lot of hard work from David Rocco, the HV4W, and many volunteers, the Mount Beacon Fire Tower, closed since the ’70s, was reopened after a long restoration project. The HV4W helped to bring steel cross members, paint, the new roof, and workers and their tools up to the tower, which is normally accessible only by foot via a rocky path. Motorized vehicles are also prohibited from driving on the mountain. The opening ceremony drew a crowd of nearly 60 people, 30 or so who needed help to get to the top of the mountain, where 25 members of the HV4W acted as transport. Pete Seeger and two local news crews were even able to join us on the ride up the mountain. In July and August, the HV4W participated in two NOVA (Northeast Offroad Vehicle Alliance) events. The first was a weekend long run called Florida Vacation in Massachusetts hosted by Eastern 4Wheelers. Florida Vacation offered a mix of both private and public properties with varying degrees of difficulty. The next event was NOVA Trailfest. This event, held at Rausch Creek, is a major draw for all of the clubs involved in NOVA. New to NOVA this year, the Jersey Jeepers played a huge role in leading rides, hosting BBQs, and setting up vendors for raffle prizes. Trailfest is for everyone in the family, with special prices and giveaways for the kids who tagged along this year. Check out nova4x4.org for more information and pictures from both events. This September, HV4W is hosting two NOVA clubs in back-to-back trail rides at the property known as the Dog Park. Look forward to some great stories and pictures to follow, as the Dog Park has started to draw in more highly modified Jeeps with highly skilled drivers. If you are interested in becoming a member, please visit our website, hv4w. org, and follow the link for membership. Jon Mapes President, HV4W

Pine Twp. VFD – ATV Run • Scrubgrass OHV Park • August 24, 2013 In late August, I found myself back in Armstrong County, Pa., for the Pine Township Volunteer Fire Department’s ATV Run and company fundraiser. Each year, the company holds this event, which starts off at the Scrubgrass OHV Park. In total, 16 local land owners participated, setting up a 37-mile ride for the 650-plus participants who took part in this year’s ride. The event was open to ATVs, dirt bikes, and UTVs. For a minimal fee, riders could hit the trail as early as 9 a.m. and make as many loops as they liked as long as they were off the trail by 5 p.m. The weather was perfect for this year’s ride, with
cooler temperatures for August and hardly any dust due to some rains early in the week. All in attendance seemed to have a great time. They rode the trails, they hit the mud pit, and they bench-raced to their heart’s content. Eats were available from the fire company, and riders pulled chips for prizes and awards. Events like this take place all over the state and benefit the local communities. Thanks to the landowners for making it happen and to Scrubgrass Village for hosting the event. They have a few toy runs later this year, so check out their website for all the details: www.SGOHVPark.com.
Frank’s mud pit strikes again.
Arnie and Steve love to read Rec Rider.

Round 8 Ormond Farms - 2
|
October 2013

By: Noel Hartem
Round 8 Ormond Farms 2 always follows Labor Day weekend, and this year, it took place on Sept. 7 and 8. It marks the closure of summer and our season. This is always the race that starts the points crunch and generates the nerves. The key to getting through the last few races is to just breathe. If you put anything but your race at hand as your focal point, then that is when mistakes happen. This is also the time of year that I give my speech about what is truly important. For those of you who have not heard us drill this over and over again or who maybe have forgotten, I will begin the race report with good advice that should be taken and not disregarded. When the final race ends and places that everyone has been working so hard all year to achieve are secured, please remember that whether you have finished where you wanted to or not, sportsmanship and friendship
Cody Steele wins Adult Pit Bike.
outweigh any placement. You reach for your opponent’s hand and congratulate him or her on a great year of racing. When the races are all said and done, it’s the bench racing with your friends that will mean the most, not the championship you think you should have won or even the accomplishments you did achieve. There are many points battles engaged from first to last at all levels, and many are against a friend. It’s a wonderful thing to sit back and remember together, under the stars in front of a campfire, what a great year of racing and accomplishments everyone achieved together. If you have poor sportsmanship when losing or winning, people will never remember what a great rider you were or could have been; they will only remember what a poor sport you always were. So with that being said, head over to our website to see the full race report and results: www.neocracing.com.
The Tikes program is in demand.
Chris Blackburn Jr. wins the O/A Youth race.
Ryder Lafferty is your main event winner.
Shawn Davidson wins the C split.

August 17-18, 2013 • Kempton, Pa • Photos by: Leroy Bogert • Story By: Monte Hayes Finally, the Summer Nationals by Team Fujimo! This is the event that everyone looks forward to every year. I’m not sure why; could it be the Figure 8, which is run at night under the lights, or could it be the intensity of the Top Eliminator, which is put on by the Phantom club members? Anyway, I got ahead of myself. The first event was the sand drags, with 98 competitors for the weekend, covering everything from 4 cylinder stock to Hemi-powered vehicles. The women’s competition went very well with just a few problems, like when Bridget Follin’s and Debbie Hayes’ machines both had to be pulled off the strip. Other than that, both divisions were very competitive. Special note: Pete Barron beat John Foieri in B class; what a race. OK, now for the night’s event – the Figure 8 under the lights. We started with the women’s division, and we had our first action when Kaylea Boyer rolled while trying very hard to stay ahead of an “on fire” Justine Wessner. Kaylea’s co-pilot was none other than Vince Morgan. This was his second rollover this year. Vince had an extremely scary end-over-end roll with an X class dragster during our first race in Delaware this year. Kaylea’s rollover set up a trophy run between Heather Eroh and Justine Wessner, with Justine coming out the winner. In the open division, we started with James Gray in his Suzuki rolling and giving the win to Brian Seither. Steven Heilig had a small talk with a yuk tire, and, of course, the large tire had the last word. Tom Leonard got lost again; he needs a GPS. Billy Henon hit two drums and a cone to take himself out, and Kory Shoemaker ran hard
against Brad Eroh for first and second in I class. After the Figure 8, the Phantom club members tightened up the course. Prior to the running of the Phantom-sponsored annual Top Eliminator race, they had a brief tribute to Bruce Eroh. The way the Top Eliminator works is that first and second places in all the classes are automatically qualified, and then other competitors can buy into the race. When the dust settled, the top female competitor was Gail Horning (you may remember her Bronco from the cover of Rec Rider Magazine last year). Monster truck driver Lee O’Donnell came out on top in the open division. Later, Lee took Gail out for the overall win and the Monster trophy. On Sunday, the course was probably a mile long so all competitors had a lot of seat time. We had a lighter moment when Samantha Zilinski got lost and was wandering all over the course, but the rest of the women’s division went very well. In the open division H class, Lee O’Donnell took himself out by hitting a cone. It came down to Zack Korch and Jeremy Crone, with Zack coming out as the winner after James Gray’s machine quit five feet before the finish line while he was leading the race. So now all that is left to our season is the Benefit Race, which will be held at Kempton Fair Grounds on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 5 and 6. The Back Mountain Enduro Riders’ Aug. 25 Hare Scramble was, as I predicted in the last issue, awesome! The turnout was pretty good, considering the event was postponed twice before we actually had the chance to hold it. The weather was beautiful with partly sunny skies and warm but not hot temperatures. Humidity was not high. We really could not ask for much better weather. The track was fantastic with 6.2 miles of everything. There were a few mud puddles, a few more dusty spots, and a whole lot of dirt. With around 120 motorcycles starting, the race times were fast. The overall winner was Shane Hufford Jr., completing eight laps in just 2:05:01, and Craig Delong just two seconds behind him! Jerod Stoner rounded out the podium in third, and we are very proud of our own Jared Dzugan coming in fourth overall, completing eight laps in 2:11:58. Great run, Jared!! After the bikes were finished, it was time for the quads. Dust was the issue here in certain sections of the course, and with the exception of a few minor changes to the track, everything went well. With around 70 machines starting the race, the podium was topped by Chris Borich, completing five laps in 1:20:36; he was flying! Second was Jarod McClure, two minutes back, and Blake Kramer came in third. For all of the finishing positions, lap times and cumulative times, you can go to http:// www.moto-tally.com/D6/HS/Results.aspx. There is also a link on our Facebook page. Two weeks later, on Sept. 8, was our “Lawton 100” Dual Sport Ride. There were a few showers on Saturday night before the ride, but on Sunday the weather was good. There was a morning loop of about 59 miles, which had six hero sections and lunch at the halfway point, which was also the signup area. Next up was the afternoon loop, which was 65 miles and had three hero sections. Attendance was not very high, but a great time was had by everyone there. Next issue I will have a full report on our ECEA Hare Scramble, which was slated to be held Sept. 21 and 22. I will also report on any other events that the Back Mountain Enduro Riders might be involved in. Please visit our website, www.bmer.org, or become a friend on Facebook at Back Mountain Enduro Riders. Until next issue, ride safe and ride hard!

Woods Powr Grip Adventure Light Rec Rider Staff Report
At Fishers ATV Reunion this year, we ran into a great group of guys with one awesome lighting system. Woods Powr Grip began as a small automotive, electrical, and small engine repair shop and has grown into a worldwide leader of vacuum lifting tools and mounts. These things are serious. Believe me, they are defiantly not the lickand-stick suction cups you all stuck to your forehead as a kid. This little vacuum mount will hold up to 15 lbs., so throwing this on your helmet or machine is more than an adequate solution. Now pair that up with a 1500 Lumen LED light powered by rechargeable lithium ion battery (hardwire also available), and you have a serious nighttime tool for your riding adventure! We decided to take a few, strap them on, and hit the dark woods of Rock Run at night. Now we ask ourselves, how did we ever ride at night without this setup? It’s quite a testament that we could not even tell whether or not our machines’ headlights were even on. These things are bright. It makes nighttime trail riding no different than daytime riding. It’s no fun when you are riding at night and you’re spotting your next turn but you cannot see it because your eyes are ahead of your headlights, or when you look into the turn you’re about to make and it’s pitch black until you make the turn, or when you pull up a wheelie to get through a rough section and your light shines aimlessly into the sky.
Thanks to this new setup, those experiences can be a thing of the past. Strap just one of these setups to your helmet (I prefer two to balance out my head), and wherever you are looking is where the light is shining. We had a blast; it was like seeing for the first time. It made our riding experience much more fun and also much safer. Riding is not the only thing these amazingly versatile tools are good for. We found ourselves carrying them around for everything we did. As soon as we got back from our ride, we used them all around our campsite. They provided a great light to cook under on the grill, and when I had to run to the bathroom in the middle of the night, it was a great little companion. Now one thing we must warn you of (because we are still making this mistake): Remember, you are wearing an extremely bright light on your head. I can’t tell you how many times I came to a spot on the trail, turned, and looked over at my buddies and we were all blinded by each other’s lights. Get into the habit of turning them down or off when you come to a resting point. If you are interested in checking out these lights, look us up at your next off-road adventure or go to www.vacuummounts.com to learn about other great lighting packages. Please tell them that REC RIDER sent you!

Benefit – Childrens Miracle Network • September 14, 2013 • By: Chas McHenry Sept. 14 started as a chilly and damp morning at the new parking lot for the much-anticipated Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area (AOAA) riding park in Shamokin, Pa. Off to one side, the new Welcome Center for the park stood under construction. Up the drive, the registration tables were steadily growing lines of riders waiting to head out and get a second preview of the trails on the AOAA property while raising money for the Geisinger Children’s Miracle Network. The Anthracite Trail Riders ATV club (ATR), under the guidance of president Matt Schiccatano, hosted its fundraising event for the second time, and after weeks of hard work and months of planning, it became a successful Saturday. Planning a benefit ride this big around an under-construction ATV park is no small feat, and the ATR crew did an excellent job making it look professional and easy. If they can produce an event this well-managed under these conditions, one can only imagine what their rides will be like once the park is open. The good relationship ATR shares with the AOAA authority should ensure them the ability to work together for a long time to come. Once we got through the registration, geared up, and got out on the trails, it wasn’t hard to remember why this park is going to be so successful: There is a great mix of riding out there. Trails wound through woods and plateaus, in wet and dry conditions, making use of tight turns, long vistas, and mud puddles. There was absolutely no shortage of mud there AT ALL! There were also trails across ridges, up hills, down hills, on rocky trails, along old mining roads, you name it. If you can’t find a trail to feel at home here, you didn’t look hard enough. All different kinds of machines and riders were there, from dirt bikes to side-by-sides, and everyone looked to be having a great time. This year there was a second loop trail to ride, an 8-mile loop covering the eastern side of the park, showing off more of the trails and giving visitors a broader idea of the places to ride in the park. The money raised during the Sept. 14 event goes to the Geisinger Childrens Miracle Network, The Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, and various projects, events, and equipment to help children suffering from debilitating diseases. Most importantly, the equipment purchased through events like this are specialized pediatric and neonatal devices made specifically to help children beat the diseases that they are fighting. I can’t think of a better cause to ride for than providing a child another chance at life. And ATR would like to throw a big thank you out there to all the riders who showed up and made this possible. ATR is open on Facebook under Anthracite Trail Riders and is accepting memberships. The group expects to have a website up and running as soon as possible. This club has grown by leaps and bounds in just the last couple of months, and that is a clear indicator of the promising future the area holds for ATV riding and off-road events all around. The board members are great people, and the members and ground crew are as dedicated and hard working as any crew I have ever seen, formally trained or not. These men and women are completely invested in the success of their club and the new park and making sure all is a success. ATR can be contacted to help raise
funds for your cause and will work with you following the AOAA rules to help make your event a success too. This is truly a wonderful representation of the best of our sport, and helping them keep it going is not only good for our sport but for the ATV community as a whole. Please view images from the day’s event from Tabb Felty at www.tabbsphotography.smugmug.com.
Bras for a Cause Lost Trails ATV Adventure Park Sept. 15, 2013
The third annual Bras for a Cause supporting the PA Breast Cancer Coalition (PABCC) took place at the Lost Trails ATV Adventure Park in Dunmore, Pa., on Sept. 15. Devoted exclusively to breast cancer awareness and education, the PABCC represents, supports, and serves breast cancer survivors and their families in Pennsylvania through educational programming, legislative advocacy, and unique outreach initiatives. The event kicked off on Sept. 14 with a bang with the Lost Trails first-ever night ride. The night ride attracted around 100 riders filled with excitement for a three-hour adventure. The night ride consisted of varied terrain such as rock crawls, railroad beds, winding trails, hills, and mud, and the best part of all was when we got to ride through the historic 800-foot tunnel. Sept. 15 started off with the sun shining brightly and over 215 riders geared up and ready to go! The main attraction for the day was set around finding four bright-pink bras hidden throughout the trails. If you were lucky enough to find a hidden bra, you could have won a helmet camera, a big-screen television, riding gear, or a year membership to the Lost Trails Park. When they were not riding, participants were able to participate in a tug-of-war competition or visit the bike wash from Heather and Marissa. We also had tables set up from some of our sponsors. Best of all, the entire event raised over $3,300.00 for PABCC! We would like to say a special thank you to our platinum sponsors, as well as our volunteers and all the riders who came out to support such a great organization. We are all looking forward to next year’s Bras for a Cause event, Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014.

Breast Cancer Fundraiser – Upcoming Event
Mason Dixon Dirt Trackers Lampeter Firemans Field October 11-12, 2013 As many of you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I’m sure that many from all walks of life will be raising money to help prevent this devastating disease. I’m sure that just about everyone reading this either knows or knows of someone who has been affected by breast cancer. Coming up in October, we as race fans get to make a difference. The Mason Dixon Dirt Trackers will once again be hosting Flat Track races in Lampeter, Pa., only this time it’s bigger and better than ever. They are stepping up to a two-night format, both Friday and Saturday, Oct. 11 and 12, and will be hosting this fundraiser being put on by local business owners and racers Darren Phillips Sr. and Vicki Gee.
About the Fundraiser What better cause to give. Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of death among women, and 1 in 8 will be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime. Let’s help put a stop to this and come on out and donate to the cause. Local businesses have donated everything from cash to motorcycle and automotive products and gift cards to businesses and restaurants. The list goes on and on. Donations will be accepted all weekend long, and Chinese auctions will be held to raffle off prizes. There will be change jars and 50/50 cash prizes, and if you can’t make it out but still want to help the cause, you can mail a check to 5919 Windmill Road, Gap, PA 17527. The goal is big. Vicki and Darren hope to raise $10,000 to donate to the Lancaster Cancer Society. By reaching this amount, they can determine where the money goes. Their hopes are to get the money from this fundraiser directly in the hands of an underinsured or uninsured resident from Lancaster County who is fighting breast cancer. If you would like to donate cash or prizes for the event, please contact Vicki at 717-553-3338 or email her at: mrsgoodwrenchwd@gmail.com. We hope to see you all there.

About the Races The Mason Dixon Dirt Trackers return once again to the Lampeter Fireman’s Field to host two nights of Flat Track Motorcycle racing. Classes ranging in size from 50cc racers right on up to the pros will be going at it on two separate nights of racing. The only exception to that is in the pro division. The night of Oct. 11 will be a qualifier, with the main event on the night of Oct. 12. Pennsylvania is well known for producing many top pros and national champions, and I’m sure many will grace the track at this fall’s event. There will be a special pro purse with a minimum of $500 going to the winner, so the racing should be red hot. Other action will feature moped and barstool racing. If you’ve never experienced a moving barstool, you may want to come check this out. It’s a ton of fun, and special proceeds will go to the fundraiser. Also back and growing every year is the moped class. Laugh you may, but these guys are serious and will keep you on the edge of your seat. It’s designed as a family affair, so bring the whole crew, as a portion of the $10-per-person gate fee will be donated back to the charity. If you ride in on two wheels, you get a break and only pay $8. For more details, call Bill at 443-528-7648.

Race # 11 – MAMA Series • Sept. 7-8, 2013 • By: Jim Bull Photo.com Early September took us to attend another first for the Pagoda Motorcycle Club. The Mid-Atlantic Motocross Association, or MAMA, as they’re better known, made its first appearance at this popular District 6 facility. The MAMA group is geographically located to the south of Pennsylvania but its organizers are always looking for new facilities for its racers. This appearance saw over 400 racers make the trek north along with a few of the locals for two days of great racing action. I owe the Saturday racers of this series an apology, as I only ever make it out to the Sunday events. The MAMA format allows for practice for all on Saturday; however, all of the age classes and some of the women’s classes are held that day, as well. I need to make it a point to get to some Saturday racing so we can show those classes some love in our pages in the near Mini Women Open 7-15 Overall Finish Positions 1. Shelby Benson 2. future. So Sunday it was again - for me, anyhow. The racing was great, with lots competition for all. MAMA was originally created as a youth organization close to four decades ago, so the group has many options for young racers. Class after class hit the track to do what they love best. After the race, I spent some time in the pits, and the consensus was the same. Every racer I spoke with said they loved the track and they hoped that MAMA would return in the new year for more racing on Pennsylvania soil. A great job goes out to both Pagoda and MAMA for putting this event together. You can check a few class results here; to see the rest, go to www.MAMAMX.com. ATVs used in Pennsylvania must be registered and titled with DCNR’s Snowmobile/ATV Section. The ATV registration and titling fees are NOT user fees for the privilege of using trails on stateowned land. The fees provide funding to administer the program, maintain trails in DCNR-managed parks and forests, and provide grants to profit and nonprofit organizations for developing additional riding opportunities.

An ATV owner will be issued a registration plate for the vehicle. An expiration sticker to be affixed to the plate will be issued for standard registrations.
Liability Insurance
If you are using your ATV solely on land owned or leased by you, you are not required to get liability insurance. All other riders must carry liability insurance. Proof of that insurance must be carried with you when you ride. There are no minimum requirements or coverage standards established by DCNR or the Snowmobile/ATV Law for the liability insurance.

Allegheny Cup Race • Sept. 14-15, 2013 • By: Jim Bull Photo.com Mid-September found us in Three Springs, Pa., for the fourth annual Allegheny Cup Race. This event was originally designed to showcase the 50cc racers of our sport. Over the years, it has grown to feature all mini classes. Big bike classes are held too, but the spotlight is on the youngster. They are, after all, the future of our sport. This year’s event brought beautiful weather to the host facility, Rocket Raceway, which is located in Huntingdon County, Pa. The mini classes were well represented this year, and these mini warriors took to the track and offered some of the best racing of the day. The action was particularly close in the 50cc Class 4 division and of course in the 50cc (7-8) group, where Brian Espinoza from Pottstown, Pa., would end up winning the cup. In bigger bike action, young Deacon Kouzel from Harrisonburg,
W. Va., would come out on top in both 65 and 85cc racing action. Other cup winners on the day included names like Walborn and Juergens, along with a few others. Check the complete results and more photos from the day on our website when you get time at www.RecRider.com. Rocket’s last event of the year is coming up in early October, and that will be an MDRA quad racing event. The location is open for practice most Saturdays and Sundays, and you can get all those details online at www.rocketraceway.com. The promoters from the Allegheny Cup Race asked that we thank the following sponsors: Sheetz, Twin Air, Moto Master Brakes, Cernics Racing, Racer X, Hillview Motorsports, Mommy Gear, MXKA, Cobra, Rocket Raceway, and Dunlop.

OK4WD & RRP Racing – Mud Bogs Numidia Dragway • Labor day Weekend
get dirty too! Then Sunday rolled around, and the big boys rolled into town. We’re talking fully modified trucks, Jeeps, and even cars. Yes, cars. All of you Volkswagen and Subaru fans would have been proud. Devilstar Customs rolled in with a couple nice trucks and even a jacked-up Subaru Outback. The mud did supply quite a challenge in the beginning, stopping even the biggest of trucks the first round, but after a little work from the excavator, it became a little more manageable. When all the mud had settled and all the drive shafts were recovered, it was the Mud Hole Patrol taking home the first-place trophy in his division. What a great way to spend a weekend. The sun was shining and the mud was flying! This was a two-day event, with the quads running Saturday and the trucks running Sunday. My first thought was that there was no way a quad was going to make it through this thick mucky mud for 500 feet, but, man, was I wrong. Of course, when you have a two-week-old Can Am Renegade 1000x, not too much will stop you, which was the case for Brian Derby from Sweet Valley, Pa. He made that mud bog look easy. And don’t think it was only the boys playing in the mud, either. So all you ladies out there have to step up your game and come out and
