Anyone from the Northeast region knows the dog days of summer: lots of heat, humidity, and dust! July usually marks the beginning of them for us, and with it comes the Fourth of July, 238 years of American freedom - we can’t forget that. Hopefully by the time this issue hits the stands we’ll have plenty of great weather for riding. After all, that’s what we do, right? We have been pretty lucky so far with a mild spring, but wet, which is great for mud. Not only riding, but events! This month Rec Rider has a ton of events for you guys. Some we will have booths at, so be sure to stop by and say hello. We will be at the PA Jeep Show and the Bloomsburg 4x4 Jamboree, for starters. There are also poker runs, races, and charity events where you’ll be able to find our contributors. We have the first installment of the Jr wRECking Crew coming out this month. We had plenty of submissions to the Facebook page to choose from, so hopefully you’re in there; if not, keep submitting. We have a lot of good content for you in the following pages as well: “Thrills in the Hills,” AWRCS, MAMA, EC4WDA, Renovo Cruise for a Cure, Tar Hollow ATV Ride, Rausch Creek RCRocs , NJ Jeep Invasion, and more. If you can’t find something you like in here, you’re probably reading the magazine upside down! Coming into my second issue has been great. I’ve had the opportunity to speak to advertisers and readers from West Virginia to the Adirondacks in New York and from Pittsburgh to Connecticut. Everyone likes the magazine, and it shows. We have great contributors and great advertisers, and the relationship between readers and advertisers is what keeps us here! So make sure you keep Rec Rider close; you never know what you’re going to find in here! Have a great month. I’ll see you on the trails!

Line Mountain Coal Bucket
By Tabb Felty, Pictures by Tabbs Photography Feat. Matt N. The annual Line Mountain Coal Bucket commenced this year on June 7, and what a blast. Now, you may be wondering if that was a typo because this event usually comes around in July, but not this year. Due to all the dust caused from July’s drought, they switched the Coal Bucket and the 3.5-miler around to cause less of an issue for the drivers. Also, this helps the spectators because it’s a lot less dust getting kicked up at us while watching the race. As usual, the racing is the most exciting part, not only the ATVs and UTVs but the Jeeps, trucks, and buggies that race there too. It’s a great family event for all, even if you’re only spectating and not racing a truck around a dirt track. Most people may be thinking, “What’s the big deal?” Well, the answer is simple: This track is not a flat or easy, but it sure is a fun track to race. These trails zigzag through the mountain on what they call “goat” trails. There are huge boulders to get around, hill climbs, and don’t forget the big puddles that always cause some chaos. There are breakdowns, there are crashes, and there are trucks and buggies communicating via horn at each other to get out of the way or else. What more can you ask out of a race? The Coal Bucket is kind of special because it’s not miles through the woods but more of a rally race that can lead to more exciting events, especially when it comes to seeing who comes out the winner. So the next time you’re looking for something to do, come check out the schedule for Line Mountain and start building yourself a racer. You certainly won’t ever regret this kind of fun.

East Coast 4 Wheel Drive Assoc. Season Opener On opening day, May 24, we held our first race in central Delaware. What a fantastic Memorial Day weekend! With a large crowd of spectators and more than 70 competitors, the weekend looked like it was going to be a great time, and it really was. The action started off at noon with the figure eight competition. The women were up first, and the competition between Justine Wessner in her red trophy truck and Kaylea Boyer in her 1245 machine kept the crowd entertained, with Justine coming out on top and winning the Women's C class. We also had the honor of witnessing our last year’s champion, Brenda Risser, pushing her Jeep to the limit. The men's open competition got off to a good start with stiff competition between drivers such as Ted the Painter and Billy Henon. We also got to see some awesome driving by Wayne Rienick, with him putting the big blue Bronco into first place in his class. The drivers didn't disappoint the crowd by having no rollovers; we had Mike Laird and Jeremy Dietrich add some excitement by putting their racers over. Frederica Fire Company stayed on their toes and were able to keep up with all the incidents. Eric Stallknecht showed his past championship abilities with his yellow and blue Jeep. Brad Eroh, also a past champion, had his white machine sailing around the course. Brent Stanley got into an argument with a blue barrel; we are still not sure who won. Brandon Wessner was very competitive with his red trophy truck. In all, the figure eight was a huge success for everyone, especially the spectators. After a short break, we moved right into the sand drags. We had about 10 new racers for a first-time driver’s pass, including the introduction of Vince Mogan’s new green S10. We were just glad to see Vince back after last year’s violent rollover on this very same drag strip. After the first-time drivers finished, we moved into the women's competition. Jen Keim looked real good in her new red, white, and blue Jeep, making some blistering passes. Debbie Hayes looked like she was up to the challenge in her yellow Jeep. The open competition got off to a great start, and we had some fantastic competition between the drivers. Many of the winning times that we recorded were faster than normal due to the cold night air and great track conditions, which helped the drivers run their machines faster and harder. This month’s feature drivers are Monte and Debbie Hayes with the yellow Deka Batteries-sponsored Jeep, The Dirty Diamond. This couple is from Kutztown, Pa., and they have been racing for about 16 years. Monte is the current chairman of the East Coast 4 Wheel Drive Association/Region B, and Debbie was the photographer for this article. Our next race was set for June 14 and 15th at the Kempton Fairgrounds. The following race will be held at Williamsport PA by Susquehannocks on the weekend of July 4.

Renovo Cruise for a Cure Photos and Story By CMATVA
“The fourth annual Renovo ATV Cruise for a Cure is sold out. Registration is closed.” That was the announcement posted on the event's website by the Bucktail Medical Center's Relay for Life team. On June 7, the team greeted 245 ATV enthusiasts (176 operators with machines and 69 passengers) who had traveled from towns and cities across Pennsylvania to raise funds for cancer research while enjoying a 45-mile scenic ride through the mountains between the Susquehanna River and Kettle Creek valleys. Cruise for a Cure attracts riding organizations such as Valley ATV Club from the Wilkes Barre area that designate this as their annual club ride. The purpose of the ride, beauty of the mountains, excitement of the event, and chicken barbecue meal at the end of the ride rate high on their list of reasons to return each year. Sponsored by the Central Mountains ATV Association and sanctioned by the American Motorcyclists Association, the Renovo ATV Cruise for a Cure has quickly become one of the Bucktail Medical Center Relay for Life team's most successful fundraisers. The event has joined the list of top tourist attractions in western Clinton County. This year's Renovo ATV Cruise for a Cure netted $5,000 for the cause and will be donated to the Clinton County Relay for Life 's contribution to the American Cancer Society. That money funds research for a cure for cancer. The Renovo Fire Company held to tradition and kicked off the day's activities at 6 a.m.
A very rarely seen view of Renovo
Group 1 lined up to head out Stopped for a well-organized lunch break
with its popular pancake breakfast for riders and the general public. Participants were shuttled by the fire company to breakfast from the ride's staging area at Heritage Park. Check-in at Heritage Park opened at 7 a.m., when ride committee members checked paperwork, tagged machines and riders, and helped riders sign up for a relay group. With relay departures set at 15 minutes apart, the first of seven riding groups left Heritage Park at 9 a.m. Until this year there had only been three groups. The turnout for 2014 created a need to add four more tour groups. Led by an engine from the Renovo Fire Company, ride groups started at the Heritage Park lot and looped in parade fashion around Renovo and back to be cut loose to proceed up Boone Road for the rest of what riders would find to be the most adventurous and beautiful ride of all. This year new rest stops at vistas were added for photos and water breaks. Portajohns were located at two of the stops. The halfway point included a 30-minute break at Quiet Oaks Campground, where a local Boy Scout troop had hot dogs, drinks, and munchies for sale. The return trip from the campground at Tamarack took the riders into the headwaters of Paddy's Run via Pfoutz Valley Road and back toward Renovo with a 15-minute stop at “the Flagpole” vista above Renovo – a panoramic view of Renovo and South Renovo and the Susquehanna River Valley from the towns to Shintown 5 miles upriver. Central Mountains ATV Association (CMATVA) president Henry Sorgen dubbed this stop “the icing on the cake.” Henry heard that sentiment echoed often as he talked to people after they returned. From the flagpole above Renovo, it was a short ride downhill to Heritage Park and a barbecue chicken dinner cooked by the Renovo Fire Company and served by the BMC Relay for Life team. This meal is one of the highlights of the Cruise for a Cure experience. After a great ride up and down rocky mountainsides, through muddy lanes, down powerlines and pipelines, straddling big ruts, winding through brushy forest trails, and standing at the edge of gorgeous vistas, what could be better than topping off the adventure with half a chicken slathered with barbecue sauce, scoops of sweet baked beans, pasta, big slices of cold watermelon, and cake? The round trip took about 4 hours and 20 minutes, including 1 hour and 20 minutes for breaks. CMATVA trained guides rode at the front and rear of each tour group. Renovo Fire Company handled the communication and safety network for the event with crews stationed throughout the route and at Heritage Park. Washing stations were located at Heritage Park and Quiet Oaks Campground with hot showers available at the end of the ride in Heritage Park. As in past years, the Renovo Fire Company crew was on the scene within minutes of the few breakdowns that occurred. This year one machine quit at the first rest stop and another stopped at the Renovo Vista with a broken tie rod. Both quads were trailered back to Heritage Park. Each year the community joins in the spirit of the event by decorating porches, businesses, and fences along the route through Renovo. Posters from the American Cancer Society and laminated signs of honor and remembrance with names of local citizens who have had cancer lined Erie and Huron avenues. Last year's riders remarked on the impressive and sobering effect of this aspect of the ride. At registration, riders received a commemorative rubber bracelet and T-shirt. Back by popular demand were the purple flags. For a small fee, participants bought flags and wrote on them names of those they wished to honor or remember. They zip-tied the flags to their machines for the ride. Observers remarked that it is quite a sight to see a line of ATVs riding through

town and along the wooded trails with all of the purple flags waving. May is the month that the Cruise for a Cure committee kicks into high gear, meeting weekly to fine-tune the event. This year's record registration of participants required changes in plans for parking and processing a large number of registrants in a two-hour period. Additionally, the event attracted more vendors from central PA who set up trailers showcasing ATVs and accessories. Pink helmets with an embossed pink ribbon for breast cancer are popular. A highlight in the vendor area this year was the PAOHV

Donations and sponsorships help offset the cost of promoting and running the event. The committee was pleased to see an increase in sponsors and donors this year. All proceeds left after expenses are covered go to the Clinton County Relay for Life campaign to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Donors and sponsors will be posted at registration. The Renovo ATV Cruise for a Cure has joined the list of outdoor events that showcase the recreational assets and natural beauty of Clinton County. Like the Megatransect, Hyner Run Challenge, Frozen Snot Run, Flaming Foliage, Musicfest, Smoked Country Jam, Durty Dabber Dual Sport Tour, Piper Fly-In, and JAYCEES Labor Day Regatta (to name a few of our events), months of preparation bolstered by the cooperation and support of key individuals and organizations make all the difference in the level of the event's success. Cruise for a Cure is Bucktail Medical Center Relay for Life Team fundraising event that is sanctioned by the American Motorcyclists Association with the Central Mountains ATV Association as its primary sponsor. Mitzi Gallagher, legislative aide for Rep. Mike Hanna, guides the two organizations each year through the state-mandated permitting processes, keeping them abreast of any changes in the process from year to year. Organizations and individuals contributing to the success of this year's event were the Renovo Fire Company, DCNR district offices for Sproul and Susquehannock state forests, PennDOT, Renovo Borough, Leidy Township, Tom Charles, Renovo Rail LLC, Boy Scout Troop 137, Quiet Oaks Campground, Jim Watson – Clinton County GIS Dept., Clinton County Corrections Facility, and The Greater Renovo Area Heritage Park Association. More information and a ton of photos from the ride can be found on Facebook at Renovo ATV Cruise for a Cure or Atv Club Cmatva, as well as at www.cmatva.com.

A True American Woods Racing Championship Series (AWRCS) Photos and Story by Jim and Megan Combs
The winners were as follows:
Steve and Amy Stiller decided to purchase AWRCS in March 2009 thanks to Steve's passion for the sport. Attendance at the time of purchase was about 180 racers. Together, they have grown the number of riders well over twice that, and numbers currently total 475 racers! Steve is dedicated to helping all the racers, young and old, male or female, succeed to their fullest potential. Dirtwise School of Racing is on hand once a year to help beginners, or anyone who would like a few extra pointers, to become their best at riding. Steve and Amy also have several open rides at Scrubgrass OHV Park in Templeton, Pa., for everyone to come out and practice during a weekend of camping and riding on its 60-plus miles of trails. Come join us for the next open ride on Saturday and Sunday, July 26 and 27. Additional information can be found at www.sgohvpark.com. AWRCS RND. 3 Redbank in Fairmount City, Pa., was held on May 17 and 18. Saturday Quad races were held in very muddy and cool conditions with sun, clouds, rain, and hail. The Pee Wee quad class conquered a 1.1-mile track with 23 riders. Emmaleigh Rupp took the win on her DRR. Ronnie Rusch Jr. took the first-place overall win in the youth quad class, riding on a 5.2mile track. The adult quad class ran a 10-mile course, and Cole Richardson took the overall win in the QXC Pro class. This was the second UTV round, with 14 UTVs competing in the chilly temperatures with both rain and hail falling as they battled for first place on the 5-mile course, with Team Plavi Racing taking the overall win. The Sunday bike races were held in cool, muddy conditions, making for a very slippery course.

House Tourism and Recreational Development Committee • Testimony of Fred Brown Pennsylvania Off Highway Vehicle Association • June 18, 2014 Chairman Stern, Chairman Kirkland and members of the House Tourism and Recreational Development Committee, I want to thank you for the opportunity to present comments on House Bill 2047. House Bill 2047 introduced by Rep. Causer would require DCNR to split the restricted account into two separate funds one to track income and expenditures attributed to all-terrain vehicles and the other to track income and expenditures related to snowmobile activity in the Commonwealth. In addition, the legislation requires that copies of the biennial audit be provided to the House and Senate Appropriations Committees and would also require an annual report be provided to the House and Senate Appropriations Committees and be posted on the department's website. Shortly after the passage of Act 68 of 2001 the reconstituted Snowmobile/ ATV Advisory Committee made several requests of the Department staff to generate financial reports that would have provided the information that is being sought through House Bill 2047. On repeated occasions the information provided to the Committee failed to provide clarity on what is being spent and where it is being spent. In this legislation we are seeking to attain two goals that are fundamentally fair. First, we believe it is only proper that a full accounting of the placement of ATV registration money be provided annually. Our members pay into the fund. They are entitled to see what they get out of it. Second, it is also proper that snowmobile riders should not pay for ATV projects and ATVs should not pay for snowmobile projects. Segregation of funds makes certain that those who pay are those who benefit. We fully recognize that this accounting may not always work to ATV owners advantage. We note from the department’s data that 88% of the vehicles paying into the fund are ATVs, 12% are snowmobiles. Yet the department’s testimony, we believe, will show on average over the last three year $1.7 million (18%) is spent in the state park system where ATVs are illegal. $7.65 million (63%) is drawn from the fund for trails in the state forest system where snowmobiles and ATVs can both ride. Keep in mind that snowmobile trail miles out number ATV trail miles by a 10 to 1 margin. And also that ATV riding is only permitted in 7 out of the 20 forest districts whereas snowmobile takes place in 17 out of the 20 forest districts. The conclusion here is that the department spends way more from the fund on snowmobile trails than ATV trails. But, DCNR states that the grant program through the Bureau of Recreation and Conservation has directed 92% of its funding to ATV related projects. By this measure, its advantage ATVs. HB 2047 will allow us to measure cash flow in a clear and definable way. Through the late 1990s and early 2000s Pennsylvania experienced a dramatic increase in the number of actively registered all-terrain vehicles, while at the same time the number of snowmobiles actively registered remained fairly constant. As a result, the revenue that the department had to work with grew considerably from the increase in actively registered ATVs. I have attached a spreadsheet highlighting the income from ATV and snowmobile registrations, fines and other income to the restricted account. The difference between the income of the two activities is striking yet the department provides only 247 miles of trails on State Forest lands for all-terrain vehicle use and more than 2500 miles of state forest roads, trails and state parks for snowmobile use. Additionally, the Game Commission provides access to game lands for snowmobile use again ATVs are prohibited except under special consideration and only for hunting purposes. These trails need to be groomed and maintained at great cost in order to provide the kind of experience that will keep snowmobilers coming back.
As of June 3, 2014 there were 163,908 actively registered all-terrain vehicles and an additional 99,603-limited registered all-terrain vehicles. As of the same date there were 33,860 actively registered snowmobiles and 2,648 limited registered snowmobiles. With the exception of 29 miles of connectors, DCNR has done nothing to address the need for expanding trails for all-terrain vehicles on state forestland. Instead, the administration is continuing the policy of the Rendell administration to locate and develop, at great expense, large parks in an attempt to address ATV rider’s needs. Two pay to play multiple use riding areas, Rock Run in northern Cambria County and the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area in Northumberland County, have been built in the last several years. These are spectacular facilities to be sure, but they are only part of trail mile parity. State forest land must remain a staple of the trail system. In a letter on the segregation of funds to Representative Causer, Secretary Ferretti wrote, “While it can technically be split into independent units, DCNR feels this would unnecessarily increase costs and budgetary complexity without helping to advance the department's support for either the snowmobiling or ATV communities. The registration process for both vehicle types is handled by a unified team of employees and singular computerized registration system. Splitting snowmobile and ATV income and expenditures into two separate restricted accounts, with the corresponding need to track employee time and billing to either account, would only increase administrative costs while not creating any significant value. Likewise, time accounting and billing of forestry staff supported by these revenues would create additional unneeded costs. Furthermore, accounting for sales tax collection would necessitate adding additional administrative work to ensure that tax is properly collected and allocated into the appropriate funds rather than a single account, again adding time and cost to what is currently an efficient system.” We ardently disagree with the concept that the passage of the bill would not create any significant value. Quite the contrary, transparency and accountability are required of our government and are of considerable value and importance to all citizens of the Commonwealth. Secrecy much like familiarity breeds contempt. PAOHV believes that a more cost effective and more immediate way to expand riding opportunities for ATV users is to locate, develop and maintain challenging, sustainable trails on state forest land. While the parks provide additional opportunities for a variety of outdoor interests, including ATV’s, we believe that additional trail mileage on state forest land can be developed and maintained within the resources generated by the registration fees currently paid by actively registered all-terrain vehicle users. The management of the fund and the lack of access to state forestland resources have been of concern to the ATV community will for more than two decades. The inability or lack of interest on the part of the department to be transparent and accountable with the users that generate the funds with which the department operates the program is inexcusable and needs to be remedied. PAOHV believes that once there is a proper accounting of income and expenses as proposed by HB 2047 the resources will exist to provide and maintain added trails on state forest land. On behalf of other Pennsylvania Off Highway Vehicle Association, I want to thank Representative Causer the co-sponsors of House Bill 2047 and you Mr. Chairman for providing us this opportunity to bring to light the concerns of the users. I look forward to working with you, Chairman Kirkland your respective staffs and the members of this committee in advancing this legislation to the Governor.

The Motorized Recreation Chain Gang By Denny Mann
I have been an active off-roader for more than 50 years, and for half of that time I realized my hobby isn’t liked by many of the other trail user groups. Lately I have felt extreme tension between the motorized and non-motorized trail user groups to the point of discrimination, even though the DCNR has had a moratorium on building new trails that is more than 15 years old. I see the various district offices turning a blind eye to their favorite user groups and allowing new non-motorized trail construction. Yet the motorized opportunities on state forest land are shrinking. Could this be recreational discrimination? Over the past four years, dirt bike riding opportunities on state forest properties have been cut in half. The first assault was the loss of trail in the Seven Mountains Dual Sport trail system due to a claimed environmental issue. Then the Shade Mountain Dirt Bike trail system was placed under the same operational schedule as the ATV trail system. The district office claimed that an out-of-state rider was on the trail system during deer season and hunter complained. This change has led to a fivemonth reduction in riding opportunities at the Shade Mountain and Seven Mountains trail systems. Finally, the DCNR introduced the Motorized Events Guidelines targeting dual sport and enduro events because the DCNR claimed a cabin owner had issues with an enduro event. Sure I knew some trail users groups considered me and my recreation criminal, but recently I realized our own actions were being used against us. Such as a dirt biker caught riding during deer season and an unhappy cabin owner impacted by an enduro event on state property. Who said one person can’t bring about change? Unfortunately
this change was in a negative direction for the motorized community. So I jumped into the Motorized Guidelines issue to see if the chain of events impacting my sport could be stopped. With the help of Fred Brown from the Pennsylvania Off Highway Vehicles Association and House Representatives Mike Regan and Dan Moul, we brought the impacted clubs together. After two months of dialogue, a pattern or trickledown effect became evident. The clubs involved were tied together like a prison chain gang. The problem started with a disgruntled cabin owner who had a friend on the certified forest board who guided the review process to the enduro event. This was followed by the creation of the Motorized Event Guidelines for the DCNR, which affected five more clubs. Then all broke loose, and one issue after another pulled the chain gang all over the place. Event dates were changed. Trails were lost. Event attendance was down. Bond rates were too high. On and on and on it went. The lessons learned over the past four years are: 1. We are all in this together. 2. One person or club can make a difference. 3. Our local politicians are a good source for help. 4. Everyone needs to come under one unified voice, such as the Pennsylvania Off Highway Vehicles Association. So go out and ride with respect and do it legally. Join your local club and make some new friends while doing some community building. Then have the club join a quality umbrella organization by visiting www.paohv.org.

Heckschersville Poker Run Story and Photo by Tabbs Photography The poker held at Heckschersville Clover Fire Company on June 7 run was a success this year. Nearly 600 riders registered for the event and spent the day on trails of a span of about 30 miles. The poker run wasn’t only for adults; kids of all ages mixed with all different types of ATVs and UTVs and rode in the event. This is a great run for families, friends, and couples, for anybody who wants to have a nice time out on the trails. These poker runs benefit local volunteer fire companies whose members risk their lives on a daily basis for people they don’t even know. So make sure that you come and support your local fire companies by going on these poker runs with your friends and family. I even got to join in on the ride, which doesn’t happen too often, because I had to run my photographers out to specific places on the trail to capture the special moments of the ride. I am pleased to say that the trails were rider-friendly and the fire company had all volunteers running the ride. They had people sitting at road crossings to make sure that riders got safely across the street, and there were others at checkpoints so that riders of age could choose a card. Still others worked back at the fire company to register the riders and serve the food. There is also behind-the-scenes work that is not seen but should be considered, like marking the trail, making sure it’s safe, making sure no one gets stranded, and coordinating all the elements to create a successful and fun event. So here is a special thanks to all the workers who held meetings and spent hours and days working to make this ride go smoothly. You all did a great job, and the ride went very smoothly with almost no hiccups. You put on a great family ride! Next time you see a volunteer from a fire company make sure you say thank you; they are truly undersung heroes who wouldn’t have it any other way.

Crawling Over Some Rocks By M. Woolford-Buchter
On Saturday, April 26, Rausch Creek Off Road Park kicked off its RcRocs Crawl competition season. With a perfect spring day on board, the day started out with a swap meet with 15 vendors ready to wheel and deal. The competition began at 10 a.m., and with cones in place and the rocks ready to be crawled upon, the course was ready to go. Spectators were on hand and ready to cheer for their favorite crawler. The crawl had begun and things were underway when it happened…the first rollover of the competition by Lori Lind from Class 1. Nobody was injured during this rollover, and Lori was able to continue in the competition once she was recovered. While Lori was getting recovered, a second rollover had occurred by Ronald Lind from Class 3. That is correct! Lori and Ronald Lind, husband and wife, rolled at the same time! Motor Cycle Competition Inc. Stump Jumper Harscramble & Surf Moto Photos and Story by Joann Hauser
On May 17 and 18, MCI (Motor Cycle Competition Inc.) and the ECEA held the third round of their Harescramble series at Sahara Sands and Gravel in Eaglewood Township, N.J. This was an event that will probably be considered one of the best haresrambles of the season, making it tough for other clubs to top it. This was a two-day event, Saturday and Sunday, and Pee-Wee, 50cc, Youth, and the Surf Moto took place on Saturday. There were nearly 100 riders, for just the ECEA Fast Kids event that took place on Saturday, with the overall going to Kyle Tino from Harmony, N.J. Taking the win for Pee-Wee was Allen Adkins and 50cc was Kyle Grenewicz. A special shot out goes to Gavin Oldenburg who raced his first race; he is 4 years old and did an outstanding job, and we all look forward to seeing you at our next ECEA event. Way to go, Gavin. Up next after the Fast Kids to hit the motocross track was the Surf Moto Competition hosted by MX Surfing, Surf Unlimited, and Trapani’s. The Surf Moto competition is when surfers and MX riders come together and hold MX and surfing competitions. There no need to be a surfer to join; participants just need to have a passion. Bother riders and surfers compete; some have a passion for both sports, while others may just love one or the other. It doesn’t matter what the passion, surfing or riding. You can check out more information on their Facebook page, Motosurf/Competition, or http://www. mxsurfing.com/about/. For Sunday’s race, nearly 450 riders showed up between the morning race and main, and conditions to the motocross track and trails, as told by riders, were perfect. The morning racers raced for one and half hours, with winners including Charles Crum in first place, Chris Gordon in second place, and Shawn Davidson, who is one of our women riders, in third place. Way to go!
For the main event, taking the overall win was Kyle Mcdonal, with second place going to Tegan Robert Temple and third going to Ethane Walters, who also nailed the hole shot. It was a great event, and we are all very thankful and would like to thank the owners of Sahara Sands, the Silvi family, for letting this event take place on their property; it means a great deal to all off us, the ECEA, AMA, MCI, and all the riders and families. Also, thank you to the Eagles Wood Fire Department and First Aid, along with all the ECEA, AMA sponsors who help to make these events possible. This was one great event, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s voted the number one harescramble of the year. Way to go, MCI. *My web site, if you ever need it, is harescrambleenduroaction.com. Ethan Walters gets the hole shot for AA and third place overall

So, if you want your letter to be considered for publishing, be sure to tell us that when you write it. The team at Rec Rider looks forward to hearing from you and your parents, as well.
And, don’t forget to have your parents submit their favorite photo of you riding and off-roading for possible inclusion in an upcoming edition of the Junior wRECking Crew. Like in the past, there was the option to camp out the night before and spend time with the other riders around campfires talking and enjoying the time, or you could just roll up on the day of the event, register, and go ride. Once again, Mr. Tompkins and the Cook Shack were open for breakfast, offering great breakfast sandwiches to the hungry ATV riders. The Cook Shack was also open for lunch; they had some awesome chili, and the burgers and hot dogs were just what the doctor ordered after a fun day of ripping through the great trails. The organizers of the event made some changes to the trails this year. They added two sections of trails for the young kids and another hero loop for th¬e adrenaline crowd. This terrain always keeps me guessing ... Mother Nature and the Tar Hollow crew made magic in these woods! The terrain goes from woods to dried-up creek beds, and then you find yourself riding through some quarries and going up some crazy inclines on the hero loops. My personal favorite is playing in the swamp! You know how much I love the mud. The main difference between the hero loops and easy trails is the incline, but either way you're sure have an awesome ride. They made two different sections of trails for the younger riders. By doing this, they were able to include a wider group of riders with different abilities. This way, members of families with varied experience on the trails could take part in the same ride. One of the trails was right at the field where everybody parks; it's an oval track where the parents can watch younger riders go around, and it has mud … even better! For the older kids with more experience, a new trail was located a short distance up the main trail. This new trail afforded parents the ability to either follow their kids or just watch them run the trail. I rode around on the new trail as well, and it was fun; there were smaller versions of trail elements to give the young ones a feel as to how to handle their machines. The only negative of this ride I can think of is the size of the arrows and signs. I would have made them a little bigger to stand out more. The arrows and signs are on the smaller side, so they could be easily missed if you aren’t paying attention. We really would like to thank Art Tompkins, the landowner, for opening his property up to the ATV and UTV riders. A special thanks also goes out to the three Steves for coordinating this and talking to Mr. Tompkins about hosting and organizing these types of ATV/UTV events. Great job by all, and we are looking forward to the next one.

Sand, Surf, Boardwalk Fries, and Jeeps! By M. Woolford-Buchter On June 13 and 14 Ocean City, N.J., was taken over by the second annual Ocean City New Jersey Jeep Invasion, hosted by the New Jersey Jeep Association. Rausch Creek Off Road Park and East Coast Willys Association were two of the sponsors of this exciting, summer event. Festivities began Friday, June 12, around 5 p.m. with the “Downtown Jeep Invasion.” Some bad weather put a damper on things but everyone made the best of it! With the band called Tidal Wave playing and the smell of crab cakes filling the air, folks put on their raincoats and starting checking out the collection of jeeps that had arrived for the “Invasion.” Rausch Creek Off Road Park was in the crowd with two modified JKs, and East Coast Willys Association was representing the pre-1970 Jeeps with their 1951 M38. Friday night’s downtown invasion began winding down after 9 p.m., and the jeeps began making their way out of Asbury Avenue. Saturday, June 14, was the big day - the “Boardwalk Invasion!” Vendors began setting up at 9 a.m., with the ocean breeze causing the EZ Ups to become giant kites. With a little rigging of ratchet straps, Rausch Creek Off Road Park and East Coast Willys Association were able to safely secure their tents to the boardwalk. The boardwalk was kept open to runners and bikers until noon and then the Jeeps arrived! The day could not have been more perfect for a day at the beach; the sun was shining and not a cloud in the blue sky. It was 11:59 a.m. and the Jeeps began lining up the newly constructed ramp, replaced following Hurricane Sandy damage. The organizer of the event gave the thumbs up, and the Ocean City, N.J., Police Department began allowing the Jeeps to drive up along the boardwalk. One by one trail rigs, custom rigs and daily drivers drove up the wooden planks and cruised along the boardwalk. Over 350 Jeeps off all kinds lined up for what became the truly Jeep Boardwalk
Invasion! To see the entire parade of Jeeps it was a 2 mile walk from beginning to end. Everyone was given a ballot to judge the registered Jeeps for best in show in various classes. A portion of each registration fee, as well as the proceeds made from merchandise sales, were donated to the N.J. Jeep Association 2014 Charity of Choice: Make a Wish, N.J. At 4 p.m. the awards were handed out, and everyone was asked to return to their Jeeps for the exit off the boardwalk. Once the last Jeep was off the boardwalk, the seagulls returned and the bicycles regained their role as the only form of transportation with wheels on the boardwalk. Make sure to check out the New Jersey Jeep Invasion 2015! You don’t want to miss this unique Jeep experience. East Coast Willys Association and their 1951 M38

Burning Rock “Thrills in the Hills” By Chas McHenry
below us was a most welcome sight. The place was in great shape, vendors were set up, a barbecue wagon was perched right in front of the pavilion, RVs and tents filled campgrounds, and despite all the rain that had been running through during the day everyone looked pretty happy. We went into the store, got ourselves organized, filled out the paperwork and made it to our campsite. The staff there had us set up right in the middle of everything. We were steps from the midway, and we could see the zipline, hear the riders screeching and laughing, see the cabins, hear the riders playing on the MX tracks, and watch all the people mingle in the midway. It was perfect for us. We unloaded and checked the place out. The schedule called for the mud drags that evening, but the weather made them hold the drags until the When Friday morning rolled around and I got to leave for Tams, W.Va., I next day, which was OK; these guys seemed like they knew what they were was excited. So excited I wound up driving the eight hours straight through. doing. We went along the midway, checked out the vendors, ate the food, I had heard so many things about the trails and the scenery and the people and got ourselves ready for the events Saturday. Saturday morning came, and it was sunny, warm and a perfect day to be down there, and my experiences from being in West Virginia for other reasons riding. The trails had no dust, and the air was cool enough that when you just added to the urgency. Once we hit Interstate 64 across the bottom half of West Virginia, the rode it was like being in air-conditioning. We jumped on our machines and mountains came alive, 40 mph up, 80 mph down. Running the motorhome headed out to the trails. It took a few miles to get the maps figured out, with the 3,500 pounds of trailer behind it wasn’t making for a quick run, but not that they were bad maps, but it took some time to get to the feel for the scale of them and to be able to anticipate the intersections. After all, they MAN was it just as gorgeous as I remembered it. We pulled into the driveway at about 4 p.m. on Friday, and spread out Continued on page 34

JULY 2014
Burning Rock “Thrills in the Hills” By Chas McHenry Continued from page 33 did make a 10,000-trail system fit onto an 8.5-by-11 piece of paper. Once we had the feel of it down, we were off, and the trails were everything I’d heard they would be. They were probably the best trails I’ve ridden. I wish there were 1,000 miles of them. I love my PA trails, but these were just nicer. They were set up for the purpose of riding, deliberately, and it shows. If I was going to build a trail system, I would hire these guys to build it. The green trail wasn’t a stoned logging road; it was a trail, and you had to pay attention. It was easy, but you still had to ride it; you couldn’t just roll down it. You’d climb hundreds of feet up a mountain using tight switchbacks and then ride the edge of a wooded ridge until you came out to the edge of a Fir forest. You could smell the difference in the trees before you could see it. There were swampy areas, with a go-around if you wanted to use it. They are just excellent trails. The Blue and Black trails were even more fun, but not like up here. Black down there means there is an element on the trail that requires expert skill, not the whole trail at 2 mph rock crawling for three hours or a hill climb so steep a billy goat would stroke out. There is one trail, The AMAZON! - I drove to it, looked at it, and drove past it. It’s a 2.5-hour, winch required, half-mile of the sloppiest, slipperiest mud you’d want to play in, kind of trail. There’s no being bored down there. They have 100-plus miles of trails, and I could have easily stayed four or five days and just ridden and re-ridden those trails. We had to leave the woods and hills for lunch and to get ready to cover the day’s events, so we came out of our stupor, with new friends made, of course, and made our way to the day’s activities. First off was the drag races, 1,000 feet of grudge-settling fun. What an experience standing in front of some of those machines thundering straight at you! A couple of the guys had to run best out of three because they thought they could do better; the staff didn’t care, and all the spectators were having a blast. After the drags, it was time for the timed hill climb competition. There was a pretty good-sized hill with two steps on it that they decided to use. It used to be a part of the trail but just seemed better suited for this purpose. It’s not a hard hill if you’re going slow and careful, but to race up it is a completely different matter. Each rider got to make two passes, dirt bike, ATV, and UTV. Each class was represented, and the quickest from each class got the prize, same as the drag races. After the hill climb was the mud drags, race the clock, fastest in the class wins. They had a set of dual pits for mud drags, but it wouldn’t mix up and get soupy for them, so they had to use the single-lane mud bog. I’m pretty sure no one cared, and afterwards we went over and had our own drags in the mud drag area. We got muddy and had a blast too. The staff stood on top of the hill and laughed right along with us.

Flat Rock NYSWA Watercross It’s mid-June at The Flat Rock Inn on Tug Hill in Lewis County, N.Y., and the snowmobiles have started to arrive for the annual Spring Classic Snowmobile Watercross Races, which is the first of three New York State Watercross Association race weekends. A full race program is run on both Saturday and Sunday. We had an amazing racer turn out, with many new racers wanting to get into the sport! At first look, the snowmobiles appear a little different to what we are used to seeing all winter long. The seat and fuel tank have been removed and replaced with a small one-gallon tank to hold the fuel. Early Saturday morning, the racing haulers started to open up and the racing sleds were pulled out. After a final check of the sleds, the sound of two-stroke motors roared to life and racers began taking practice runs around the pond before the drivers’ meeting was called. With the drivers’ meeting completed, it was time to start the snowmobiles in the staging area for the drag racing part of the event. Four snowmobiles lined up and waited for the release of the starter’s rubber band. The machines took off from the sandy shore and slammed the throttle to the handle bars, causing the skis to come up off the water and the drivers to race down the pond. They raced to the finish line 400 feet away as fast as they could! Once the drag races were completed, it was time for some oval racing. Racers must run four laps during heats and semifinals, and only first- or second-place finishers get to move on and get a chance to battle it out during the six-lap final! Four racers ran at a time and with a little luck made it to the checkered flag. Many racers found it difficult to fight the waves and wakes and find themselves at the bottom of the pond with the frogs! It is all part of it, and every racer sinks at one time or another. When that happens, one of the tow-teams rigged with reels of rope and a Polaris Ranger pulls them out and they are ready to run again in no time!
From start to finish each day of racing, you could see the spectators sitting out in front of their campers taking in all of the racing action. Regardless if you were sitting in front of your camper or just came out for the day and were sitting along the shoreline, you had a great view of the racing. The program was well organized, and as soon as one race was completed, the next group was already lined up and ready to go. The highlight of the day was finishing the event with jumps. Snowmobiles circle on the water and go over the ramp built for jumping. If you want to come see watercross racing action, there are two more events this year on July 12 and 13 and on Aug. 9 and 10. Camping is available for the weekend at The Flat Rock Inn. Bring your quad or side x side to trail ride before racing begins in the morning or in the evening after the races are over. If you like racing, this is a must-see. It really takes a little while for you to believe your eyes! For information, call The Flat Rock Inn at 315-376-2332.

Ask The Zone By The ATV Zone.com
Hi, Rec Rider readers! We are back again with questions and answers. Here’s the disclaimer: We are not professional smart guys, just people who ride and have made mistakes that you can learn from. We also have figured some things out without mistakes that we’d like to share. We do not propose to be the end-all of the sport; we just want to answer to the best of our ability the questions we often get asked by new members. That said, here’s our question for the month: Submitted by Kiki from Furlong, Pa. What should I bring with me when I ride more than a mile or so from where I start? That’s a good question. Odds are you’ll be riding with a pack, or at least one other rider. It’s never a good idea to venture out into the heavily forested wilds alone. That’s when bad things can happen. But what to take when your group does go? A well-prepared “stuff hitting the rotary air moving device” bag should have the following: 1 First-aid kit 2 Fire-starting kit 3 Tire plug kit and compressor 4 The vehicle’s tool kit should be on it; supplement it with tools you think you’d need 5 A good solid knife, machete, or small axe or all three 6 One of those reflective emergency blankets 7 Sting relief should be in the first-aid kit 8 A small clean towel or old white T-shirt 9 A noisemaker of some sort: a whistle, air horn can, or whatever works and won’t go bad for a long time.

Keeping in mind you’ll almost always have drinks and snacks on you, this should keep you out of serious trouble. You will probably almost always have your phone with you; it may not always have signal, but save the battery if it doesn’t, maybe the top of the next hill does, or you can use the glass screen to reflect an SOS. It sounds crazy, but that may be the thing you need to get your butt out of a jam. Staying where you are expected to be is also one of the best pieces of advice to follow, unless you’re going to retrace your steps exactly the same way you came in; don’t move. Be quiet and listen for other machines and people. Odds are if you had an issue, it was either a rough spot in the trail or a good place to take a break, so people will be along. These are guidelines, the same ones we learned in hunter safety courses and books. If it’s a serious wreck and someone is in dire straits, I know I’d do whatever it takes to get help; that’s your decision. This is about being stuck in the woods, not emergency medical issues. That’s a whole different situation, but some things remain the same. Stay as calm as you can, make well-thought-out decisions, and know where you’re going and what’s around you. Those three things will always serve you well. I hope we never need these kits, but they can be small and fit in one neat waterproof Tupperware container. Once they are made, they really don’t require too much more effort, and if you do need it, you’re gonna be glad you have it. See you next month. If you have a question, please submit it to Postmaster@TheATVZone.com.
