AUGUST 2014
In This Issue Of
EC4WDA County Line Race ................. 10
Welcome back for the August issue! ’Tis the season for vacations, hiking, riding and exploring the mountains, hitting the beaches and getting ice cream on the beach, and enjoying the last hurrah of summer. As a kid, I always thought August was a turbo-charged month; there was so much going on that was fun, and it was all I could do to ignore looking at the dreaded month of September coming around the corner on the calendar. School meant the end of freedom, but knowing what I know now, I wish I’d have slowed it down and taken more pictures! All that aside, the memories are great, just like the ones we make for ourselves and our families now. We have lots of good stuff for you in this issue. There is the Jr. wRECking Crew page, EC4WD coverage, the 4-Wheel Jamboree in Bloomsburg, and more. There wasn’t a whole lot of ATV events this month, so we are a little light on that, but next month we are going to make up for it with great coverage from some classic events and the newest one, Rock Run’s first-ever Summer Blast. We attended the PA Jeep Show and the Bloomsburg 4-Wheel Jamboree this month, and it was great meeting so many of the readers at those two events! It never ceases to amaze me how diverse the crowd of our readers is. We have ages from barely able to read to mid-70’s who told me they are subscribers, and the same age range of people pick it up at stores to enjoy. I always get excited about going to events where I know I’m going to run into readers and fans and get their thoughts, ideas, and feedback on the magazine. It never gets old. We also want to know about any events your groups are holding or attending. The more events we can list in here, the more riding we can all do. Supporting local clubs and parks is the best way to ensure they stay around to keep working for us. As riders, it’s our responsibility to make sure we leave a clean legacy to our future riders. That’s all I have for the month, so go enjoy this issue and we will see you out on the trails!

Press Release From Owner Tom Schneider: “After being in the RV rental business for more than 10 years and after many requests from ATV and dirt bike riders, we started renting toy haulers earlier this year. We have an RV, travel trailer, toy hauler, or pop-up for every situation, family or group's needs. We have small and lightweight travel trailers, large travel trailers, and RVs sleeping up to 10 people. We often deliver and set up travel trailers or RVs in and out of state. We just delivered one to Philadelphia last week, and some customers’ favorite destinations that we deliver to include Rock Run and Raystown Lake. All of our units are new or late-model motorhomes or travel trailers. Each RV has its own generator to provide you with power, even in the most remote places. For many years we rented an RV to President Jimmy Carter for his fishing trips to Spruce Creek near State College. We also rented two RVs to be used for President George W. Bush's visit to the Flight 93 Memorial in Somerset County. For those rentals, the Secret Service thoroughly inspected the RV to make sure it was safe and secure. We've also rented RVs to movie companies shooting movies in Pennsylvania. We rent a lot of RVs for NASCAR races and Penn State Football games, but you had better reserve one early; much of our rental business comes from repeat customers, and they love our rentals. We give each client a thorough orientation on the use of the motor home or travel trailer. We also offer discounted rates in the fall, spring, and winter."

A TRUE AMERICAN WOODS RACING CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES (AWRCS) Photos & Story by Jim & Megan Combs On June 14 and 15, the American Woods Racing Championship Series (AWRCS) held the fourth round of their woods racing series at Scrubgrass OHV Park in Templeton, Pa. This round was a huge challenge for the adult ATVs and bikes, as it was the annual 100-mile race. Starting the race day on Saturday morning, there was a total of 22 pee-wee quad racers lined up to give it their all. Taking the overall win was Morgan Johnson - way to go, Morgan! The second race of the day brought 30 youth racers racing 90cc to 250 Beginners. It was a race to the end with the top three battling for the first place position. With just a total of 10 seconds between them, it was Scott Bajack, first; Tyler Fluman, second; and Justin Wright, third, as they crossed the finish line. Lining up for the ATV 100-mile race were 92 adult racers. They faced a wide variety of track conditions, with plenty of mud for everyone to get through. Brian Wolf, QXC-Pro, took the overall win, finishing all nine laps in just 3:38:35. With most racing for between 3 and 4 hours, it was a great endurance challenge that just about everyone looks forward to once a year. After the Saturday racing came to an end, a live band, Redemption, played for all to enjoy as we spent time with other riders around campfires, talking and enjoying the time on the beautiful summer evening. The bike races started Sunday morning with 31 pee-wee racers between the ages of 4 and 10 years old lining up at the start. After pledging allegiance to our flag, 10 seconds was announced and off the starting line they went. Daniel Bruce on his 65cc Honda completed eight laps in just 31:09, taking the overall win. Great job, Daniel!
Next up came the youth bike racing. Riding 65cc - 80cc bikes, 53 riders lined up at the start. As the muddy conditions stuck around for the Sunday racing, the young riders flew through track with minimal difficulty. After four laps, Max Heresco crossed the finish line, taking the overall win in just 58:59. Lining up for the adult course came 186 racers, both men and women, all waiting to hear the "10 seconds" saying for their class. Then they were off on their 100-mile adventure. Facing some very muddy spots on the course, they made their way through it within 5:20. Ryan Lojak, XCPro, finished all nine laps in 4:41:39, capturing the overall win. Thank you to Steve and Amy Stiller, all of the track officials, registration workers, crew, and everyone who volunteers their time to make the series run. All of your hard work and dedication makes the series run as smoothly as it does. There are still five races left in the series, come race with us or just stop in to say “Hi and see what the American Woods Racing Championship Series is all about. In E class, Chad Werly was handed attacking an extremely wet, flooded track set up as a figure-eight the first-place trophy when Steven Heilig stopped just short of the finish course. The slippery track made it a challenge to navigate, pushing the line. In class B, Steven Heilig's car shut off, but although he was in a second machine he did not give this one away. In the last class, Monte racers to finish on their wheels and not on their roof. Hayes had no power steering, but he still ran a good hard race. We started with our first competitor getting quite lost. Although Our featured drivers of the month are Craig and Jeanette McGovern of Samantha got lost, she still put on a show and was able to get herself off the course safely. In the next class, Kaylee Boyer almost had an incident Greenwood Lake, N.Y. This is quite a trip for them. Brian went on to take I class The next race, held by Columbia Hill Climbers at the Mason-Dixon when Antony Presto broke his front end. Next up was Brian Stanton, a former champion, who won over Brian Mengel for first in G class. Wayne Fairgrounds in Delta, Pa., is set for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 2 and 3. Rousch won over Regan Harmony in F class. We had an all-Bronco final in E class, with Gumby Honing taking the class over Ray Kamp. D class had a great finish, with Freddy Nolte winning over Kevin Reimert. The Saturday evening drag racing was held in front of a huge crowd of people who were attending the fair. One note of interest was that Tom Bassista was running his father's infamous "Opal." Tom is from Idaho Falls, Idaho. On Sunday, for the big obstacle of over a half-mile, we still had swamp conditions in most of the corners. First up we had Brenda Risser breaking, and Heather Eroh backing up half the course after going the wrong way. Some confusion on the course by Jamie Dorshiemer gave the win to Brittany Kohler, who went on to win H class. Gail Horning won her class over Jen Keim. It looks like Jen is in the hunt for this year’s championship.

TireJect Product Review When I first heard the name TireJect, it sounded cool. You can try putting “-ject” behind a lot of things and it won’t sound good, but TireJect did sound cool. Matt Ragan, the company’s vice president of sales and marketing, sent me some pouches of their sealant to torture test to the best of my ability, and I’m glad he did. I have a lot of ATVs, manufactured between 1969 and 2012. One of my machines is a 1971 ATC 90 with the original tires in the back. One of them is so dry rotted that it only holds air for a few hours, so when it empties out we put it away and grab another one. The leak got bad enough that I propped it up so the tire wouldn’t be destroyed and stopped riding it altogether. I figured this would be a good test for the product, and it was. I opened the packages and followed the instructions to the letter, except for plugging the hole, as that wasn’t going to happen with this tire. I put the TireJect sealant in my tire with their patented injector after removing the Schrader valve from the stem with the supplied tool, then re-installed the valve and aired the tire up and ran it for a while, probably 25 minutes or so. I really have to say I didn’t expect too much, especially based on the condition of the tire; it’s pretty rough, but if you’re gonna be a bear, be a grizzly! I was very surprised when I came out the next morning, about 16 hours later, and the tire was still round…all the way around, not just on top. Using a small pouch of their sealant and seeing this result, knowing the dry rot that was all the way around this tire, I was definitely impressed. It made me want to find a bigger hammer and see what else it could do. The next evening the trike tire was flat again, but by then I had pulled out my

wife’s Can Am Outlander with 26” Bighorns on it and set after her right rear tire. This thing has been leaking forever, and I can’t find a hole to plug. It’s not the valve, and it’s not on the beads, so it made for the perfect test. Once again I used their injector and sealant as described to do in the directions, aired the tire up, and ran it for about half an hour or so, running a small trailer around the farm, doing a little yardwork, and doing a couple lazy donuts in the lanes between the corn, then finally racing it up the stone lane a couple times. I checked the pressure with a gauge, and it was a little low, but not bad, but I figured I’d beat the TireJect and was happy. I don’t like it when my skepticism is proved wrong. Or so I thought. I did this on June 12; I had to change the belt in this and take it to Burning Rock for the Thrills in the Hills event the next day, but the belt they sent me was the wrong one, so I had to park it and take another one with me. I left the 500 sit and took the Rzr with me, had a blast down there, and came home and went to bed. The next morning I went out and checked the pressure in that tire, and it was the same as when I had left four days earlier. Since then we’ve run it around all over the farm, some trails, and the yard, and it hasn’t missed a beat. I am both surprised and impressed. I don’t know what they put in this or how it works, but it does. It’s more compact and easier to carry with you than other sealants, and it’s supposed to last up to 18 months. TireJect comes in pouches about the size of a child’s drink pouch, and the injector is slightly larger than a small flashlight. According to the website, they offer it in gallon sizes as well. Each order comes with everything you need to use it except compressed air, which you have to supply. I like the product and would gladly tell friends to use it. It takes a lot to make me go, “Ooooooh, neato!” but this product fits the bill. It’s simple and clean, and it works. Its results make me proud to say that TireJect is one of our advertisers. Thanks for reading!

BMER “Down by the River” Hare Scramble June 29 was the makeup date from the originally scheduled June 8 hare scramble. The river level was so high that we had water in the fields and parking lot, making it impossible to run the race and forcing us to reschedule. Sunday morning was mostly sunny and warm. Pretty close to perfect weather for our hare scramble. At 9 a.m., 34 youth and peewee bikes and quads took to the different tracks that were set up for them. Turnout for the younger kids was a little low, which we attribute to having to reschedule, but all the riders present were ready to race and did a great job while having a lot of fun. At 11 a.m., the 108 adult bikes that entered started in waves by class. Hunter Murphy had a one-second lead after lap one, but it was all Nick Davis after that, taking first place from Hunter and taking the overall win. Nick also set fast lap of the day, a 15:13 on the second of seven laps that he had completed. Hunter Murphy finished second, and William Schoeneberg was third. Our own Jared Dzugan was fifth overall, while Joshua Mitkowski was 10th and took the “B” open class win. Aaron Mulhern took a 13th overall. Austin Mulhern and Kenny Deibert both had very respectable finishes. Great job, guys! At about 1:45 p.m., the roar of the four-wheelers filled the air. Unfortunately, so did the dust. After having to reschedule due to the high water levels and worrying about how high the river was going to go just four days earlier, dust was the biggest problem of the day. A total of 76 four-wheelers took to the track in waves. At the end of the first lap, and at the end of the event, the national number 1 plate of Chris Borich stood on top of the podium. His fifth and final lap was the fastest of the day for the quads with a blistering 15:41. Blake Kramer was second, and Dalton Danglovitch was third. Alicia McCormick was the first female finisher and first in class, with 15th overall. Jessica Ammons was passing
multiple riders every lap and finished the fourth lap in 17th place but broke a tie-rod end a little over halfway through her fifth lap. She still finished second in class, and both were racing against the guys. All of the results can be found at http://www.moto-tally.com/D6/HS/ Results.aspx. This is the AMA District 6 Hare Scramble page, where you can find the results from all of the district’s hare scrambles. As our first hare scramble of the season is over and our dual sport feels like it was so long ago, the Back Mountain Enduro Riders (BMER) enjoyed a long Fourth of July weekend before starting to prepare for our next event, which will be our next hare scramble, “Down by the River.” This hare scramble is scheduled to be Sunday, Aug. 24. The day’s racing schedule will be the same: youth and peewee bike and quads at 9 a.m., adult bikes at 11 a.m., and adult quads at 1:30 p.m. We would like to invite everyone to come and check it out because not only do we have one of the best tracks in the district, but we also have one of the best tracks for spectating. So if you have never been to a hare scramble, be sure to mark your calendar. As always, Ride Safe and Ride Hard!

Mud Pit By: Stephanie Gehman Welcome back! Let’s talk about what types of racing events you can participate in with your off-road machines. There are a variety of races, and they all have very different courses between the start and finish lines. Motocross – Held all year long, in all types of weather, these types of off-road courses can be raced with either a dirt bike or an ATV. Motocross is a closedcircuit race on a manmade track built for the purpose of racing. The ATV version of motocross is run on the same track as the dirt bikes but at different times. Racers line up at a gate, and when it is dropped, they all take off and compete for first place. The first one to complete the laps and cross the checkered flag wins. Enduro – Enduros are much different from motocross events because they feature manmade and natural obstacles and other challenges found in wooded trail riding, combined with longer distances per lap. These races are scored by timekeeping: the riders leave the gate at timed intervals as compared to all at once, making it easier to keep each rider’s time accurate and to declare a winner. These races can last four to eight hours covering 100 miles and more. Enduros should not be confused with rallies, which are similar except that scores are based on a rider’s speed getting from the start to the finish. ATVs generally do not race in enduro races, as they are motorcycle races only. Hare scramble – Hare scrambles are raced on off-road courses featuring natural obstacles and challenges, but the winners are “overall” in these types of races, meaning that in the time allowed to race the course they maintained the highest rate of speed through the entire course. This means that the winner is not necessarily the person who crosses the finish line first. These races can be a couple of miles or many, many miles in length. ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes all participate in these kinds of races. Flat track – Raced around an oval, often dirt track, these events can be completed by an individual competitors or by riders as part of a team effort. Flat track racing involves racing a set number of laps around the track as quickly as the rider or team of riders can compete. The first team or racer to complete the preset number of laps around the course first wins the race. While there are no real obstacles in flat track racing, you do need to be able to control your bike at high speeds through turns while sliding the rear end of the bike out. It truly is “drifting” at its finest. We’ll take a look at a few more race and event types next month. Stay tuned! Have fun and be safe when you ride. Do you have any experience with racing in these types of events, or maybe a family member or friend who does? Stop by our fan page (www.facebook.com/RecRiderMag) and tell us about your experiences.

Bloomsburg 4-Wheel Jamboree Photos by Terry Rudzinski and Chas McHenry
The A&A Auto Stores 4-Wheel Jamboree hit Bloomsburg on July 11 with great weather and 50,000-plus spectators. There was a goliath mix of monster trucks, tricked-out trucks, stock trucks, restored trucks, rat rod trucks, and all the same varieties of Jeeps as well. There were old-school Land Cruisers, Broncos, Blazers, step sides, and many more. There were all the usual events going on: show and shine, mud drags, modified tough truck races, mud bogs, and monster truck racing, along with the burnout competition and, of course, the Miss 4-Wheel Jamboree contest. I made it to as many events as I could, and the show was just as exciting and fun as it always is. Family events never disappoint when it comes to putting on this Jamboree, and the crowd never lets the excitement drop down too low. The midway was full of vendors, everything from toy cars for the kids to parts for full-size toy trucks for the adults. The stage was always active with games, bands, contests, and announcements. There was even supposed to be a diesel monster truck try for a back flip off a dirt mound, but he blew his motor the night before The parade of trucks rolling through the fairgrounds was never ending. There were families and friends riding in the backs of trucks and checking out the competition. Some of the entrants have been coming to this event for so long that seeing them say hello was like watching family see each other after a long year. The group across from us was celebrating their 22nd year attending the event, and they aren’t planning on missing any either. The whole weekend is great fun for young people, old people, and kids. If you like 4X4s, you should really check this show out.

Middle Atlantic Four Wheel Drive Association (MAFWDA)
Explores the A.O.A.A.
Story & Photos By Andrew Taylor and Cherie Taylor The last weekend in June I had the opportunity to go along on a trail ride to the new Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area (AOAA). I had been wanting to go up and explore the trails of the new park. Andrew and Cherie Taylor, vice president and secretary, respectfully, of Capital Off Road Enthusiasts four wheel drive club (CORE, www.core4x4.org), put a trip together to do just that - go exploring. It was a great time, as described below in the trail ride report written by Andrew and Cherie. If you have not been to AOAA you might want to make plan to go. Trail Ride Report Summertime brings busy schedules, and June was slipping away quickly without any trail rides. Several CORE members were itching to get out on the trails and the opening of a new off-road park in Northumberland County, Pa., provided a perfect excuse to go exploring. Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area (AOAA) is a 6,500-acre motorized and non-motorized recreation facility in Coal Township, Pa. It began its inaugural season this year on May 17 and has already become a huge draw for the off-roading community. The site is still in development but parts of the land are currently open to off-roading and hunting. Future plans for development include hiking/biking trails, equestrian trails, camping facilities, and expansion of their ORV trails to include challenge courses and training courses. We should expect major developments over the next few years, and it was very exciting to be among the first trail riders to explore the land.
Participants were: Andrew Taylor (CORE Member), Cherie Taylor (CORE Member) - Silver Xterra Kevin Barnes (Guest) and Tyler Barnes (Guest) - Silver Land Rover Larry Pope (CORE Member) – Blue Wrangler Erik Ramseth (Guest) and Chris (Guest) - White Jeep Patriot Since the trip was a bit last minute, it took a bit of planning to get everyone settled on meet-up times and locations. We decided to make it a day trip - and considering the park is two-three hours away from everyone, it was a long day trip! We had planned to meet up with Kevin/ Tyler and Erik/Chris at the GetGo gas station (1000 W. Patrick St, Frederick, MD 21703) at 7 a.m. Unfortunately, Erik/Chris hit a bit of a snag and said they would have to meet us at a later location. The second location was a rest area just north of exit 77 on I-81 in Pennsylvania at 8:30 a.m., where we met Larry. Apparently, we weren’t the only ones using it as a meetup location - the entire parking lot was full of Corvettes! By this point we were running about 15 minutes behind, but weren’t in a huge rush because Erik said they were running behind as well. We decided to stop off one final time for our final gas up at a gas station about 15 minutes from the park (Food Mart @ 2862 Fairgrounds Road, Ashland, PA 17921) and then headed to Anthracite. The park entrance was well defined and they have a huge parking lot (half paved and half unpaved) for all of the vehicles. There seemed to be a handful of 4x4s there but mostly trucks that had obviously carted in dirt bikes and ATVs. There is a small building near the parking lot - that is where you check in. Every driver and passenger needs to fill out a bit of paperwork and then pay the park fees ($25/driver, $10/passenger). The building has a restroom facility, meeting rooms, and maps of the trails. We spoke with some of the 4x4 guys in the office and they told us a few things about the property and what we should expect. There is a main road that splits the open property in half. The north side is much tamer and stocker friendly while the south side is a bit rougher and has rock gardens. We decided that we would stick to the north side for most of the day and maybe hit the south side later in the day. We all aired down and hung out in the parking lot for a bit until Erik and Chris showed up. We headed out onto the trails around 11 a.m. For the rest of the story, please go to WWW.RecRider.com and look for MAFWDA explores AOAA.

Big Al’s Wheel to Wheel
By Tabb Felty • Picturees By Tabbs Photography What a way to start off the racing season at Big Al’s with the wheelto-wheel race on July 12. Now I know some are saying that they couldn’t make it to this epic race because they were attending Jeep Jamboree. That’s OK because there are still two more races in this division for you to participate in, along with a mud bog and two car races. So the next question may be, what in the heck is a wheel-to-wheel race? Well, let me just talk you through the day. So you take a trip out to this dirt track in the middle of nowhere, where some of the coolest people come to compete, not for a trophy but instead to test their skills among some of the best and to decide who the better driver is. It is not a huge track, but trust me, it’s big enough to have plenty of fun. Different classes are made depending on the size vehicle you want to race. It ranges from a 4-cylinder all the way up to an 8-cylinder super modified - now these are the big guys. This time, about six heats were devised because there were not enough quads to run a race. The track doesn’t just go around in a circle like NASCAR; instead, it adds a little loop to test the driving skills of those who decide that they want to race. There are two rounds to each class, and there could be a different winner each time depending on many factors, including wreckage and quickness. This is a great family-friendly track that is entertaining and that pushes you to want to race along with everybody else. This is a familyrun track that has kids’ races at night. I have been going to this track for years, and this is definitely not a race that I would miss. Also, if you’re interested in this type of race, there is a car race coming up on Saturday, Aug. 23, so come test your skill against mine because yours truly will be there racing. Hope to see y’all there!

Reading Off-Road Riders Host Reading Hare Scramble, Part of ECEA Hare Scramble Series By Joann Hauser
On June 21 and 22, Reading Off-Road Riders (RORR) hosted an ECEA hare scramble, and the turnout for this event was far better than previous years. The turnout was spectacular, and the weather was even better. The trails were said to be rocky, fast, and fun. The course consisted of some tight trails, rocks, and some downhill action. There was something special for both Saturday’s and Sunday’s races.
The overall wins for Saturday’s events are as follows: Pee-Wee overall win: 1st Julian Wojcik, 2nd Allen Adkins, and 3rd Joesph Rainone 50CC: 1st Nathan Dulaney, 2nd Kyle Grenewicz, and 3rd Kenneth Held Youth Event: the overall goes to Kyle Tino, 2nd Dalton Bloom, and 3rd Jake Ross. To all you other Fast Kids out there, you all did an outstanding job out there and you are all winners.
The pee-wee, 65cc, and youth divisions were the first up to race on Saturday. According to the ECEA's website, there was a 50 percent better turnout for the ECEA Fast Kids this year than the previous year. This is an awesome thing to see; it means more young riders are coming out and joining us at these events, which is great news for our sport.
Sunday’s races: C-event overall win: Dylan Delisi, 2nd Stosh Wcjcik, and 3rd Jake Ross Women’s Class: 1st Megan Horseman, 2nd Dana Menninger, and 3rd Shyann Phelps School Boy: Dylan Delisi Sportman: Stosh Wojicik Master: Richard Delisi I would like to take a moment and give a shout out to one of the kids, Golden Master: John Lafferty Rocco Zaccaria. He has been practicing MX at Robbinsville and has been excelling. As for racing hare scramble, this was his first one. He was so For the main event, it was another great turnout, and the overall win excited that when he got home, he called his uncle (Tony Zaccaria, who went to Jarod Stoner, with the following places also recognized: 2nd also rides enduros) and said, “Hey, Uncle Tony, I raced in the rocks and Tegan Robert Temple, 3rd Kyle Mcdonal, 4th Leonard Rehatcheck, and roots!” He was extremely excited and proud. It is stories like that I love 5th Jack Lafferty Jr. to hear about, and I always like to take a moment to give those young riders the recognition they deserve, epecially when it’s their first race The win for the AA hole shot went to William Schoeneberg. It was a great and it’s such an important day for them. I am sure the ECEA and Fast Kids two days of racing for both Saturday’s and Sunday’s events. To Reading all feel the same and look forward to seeing you at more of their events. Off-Road Riders, ECEA, sponsors, and all who made this hare scramble You did a great job, Rocco! possible, thank you and we all look forward to next year’s event.
