Letter from the Editor Jo

i n Th e

If you live in the North East region you have to abide by the seasons. Its one of the perks to living here, and to some its one of the downsides, but lets face it either way, we have to live around them. I personally like 3 out of 4 of the seasons, like most people do, albeit the one I dislike is Summer, I’m not a huge fan of humid heat, some don’t like Winter, or Fall or Spring, but we all manage. To me there is nothing more uncomfortable than standing in the shade, dripping sweat and thinking “Yeah, this is awesome!” We got really lucky to have such a mild Summer riding season this year, and I hope as many of you as possible took advantage of it. I did my best to take advantage of it. With September on us and school starting up and sunset getting earlier in the evening each day its kind of hard to not feel something about Summer finishing up. But us Off Roaders are lucky, we don’t answer to Seasons, we just change our clothes and keep going! Sure sometimes its too cold, just like sometimes its too wet, hot, or dusty, but we keep going, because we love it. I’ve spoken to riders from all over the world in my long time of riding, and they all say the same thing, “you guys are lucky in the North East”, just like we think they are lucky out in California, or Utah, or Canada, or wherever you think the grass is greener. I happen to agree with them though, we are really lucky to be able to run where we do. We have the best topography, and every couple of months it changes into something completely different. Where else can you leave the house blasting the heat, dress up like the kid from Christmas Story, and be in Jeans and a Flannel by 3 pm, wondering where the mud came from because it was frozen this morning. Yeah, we definitely got it good here, its never boring. And we have it good this month in the magazine as well, we have the Rock Run Summer Blast, the Llewelyn Poker Run, race series coverage a great RV rental review a TRUPA update, and more. In short, all kinds of things to keep your mind into Off Roading and looking forward to more of our sport. And don’t forget, if you have a Group Ride or an upcoming event that’s open to all riders and you think we need to add it to the Events section let us know at info@RecRider.com. The more events in there the better! Have a great month, and We will definitley see you on the trails!!!!

First Annual Rock Run Summer Blast By Chas McHenry

If you weren’t there for the first Summer Blast, you missed a great time. The weather couldn’t have been nicer. The only downside was the dust, but everyone kept saying, “I hope it doesn’t rain,” so that’s what we get! And it didn’t rain, it was nice all day, almost chilly, and with fall weather at night, the sleeping was just awesome! Rock Run wound up with a hole in their calendar earlier this year and decided to take the bull by the horns and throw a party. And they did it, very well I might add. We all know what it’s like throwing Thanksgiving dinner or a Labor Day party, but they had a serious party to plan. Take a few thousand people with ATVs, some high-end ATV manufacturers, a bunch of local businesses (and some from far away too!), then add food vendors and a bunch of shirts to sell. And do it all in just a couple months. That’s what Rock Run did, and as I said, it was a BLAST! The trails were in great shape, and though the midway was smaller than other events I’ve been to, it was larger than some I’ve been to as well. All the vendors in the midway were happy to be there, and it stayed busy for most of the weekend. The riding was great, and pulling people off the trails is never easy when the trails are good. Everyone I talked to out there said the same thing: they love the park, the trails and the people there. That’s why most of them came out. The bands, food and good deals on equipment and toys were all secondary. Don’t get me wrong, they were thoroughly enjoyed by all, but most people were there to ride. I know I walked around the midway a few times, spoke with the other vendors and talked to you guys as much as I could. But I couldn’t wait to get on the trails and do what we do. I even broke out my ‘85 Honda Big Red for the occasion, then just broke it. I also ran a new SxS around the Best way to fix a flat

park, which we will be reviewing in the next issue. All in all the riding was great. Rich “Rrudzi” Rudzinski introduced us to a trail I’d never been on, Gobblers Ridge. WOW, what a trail! We even got lucky enough to run right through a pile of grouse coming down one of the hills. It was woods, hills, mud and hairpin turns. I would drive back out there just for that trail. Rock Run is just a great place to ride, and the Summer Blast is a great excuse to get out there for a long weekend and be around likeminded off-road enthusiasts. The whole crew there worked incredibly long hours to make this happen, and their hard work showed. It takes a small army to do what they did, and if you’re not functioning like a team, it doesn’t happen. I’m very much looking forward to next year’s Summer Blast. Here’s to Rock Run for a great job and to all the people who showed up to make it a great event. Finally made it out on the trail

Happy, happy, happy!

Yeah, it's got nitrous, a super charger, four-wheel drive, a rocket launcher and a machine gun, and NO, you can't ride it!

20th Running of the Seven Mountains’ Dual Sport Story & Photos by Denny Mann

traction of black ice. Even without the options, the Shade Mountain riding area is known for its rocky terrain, and nobody got a break from the 17-mile beating. The rest of the Saturday was a combination of roads and Jeep trails, and I did not mind the 20 miles of pavement that followed. I needed all of the energy I had left for the rough road that ended in Laurelton. The second day of riding was much like previous Seven Mountains’ Dual Sport events. The club showcased the only legal dual sport trail system on Pennsylvania State Forest land, 82.6 miles up to Reset D and real close to 100 miles by the end in Laurelton. Remember to save Sunday’s roll chart for future outings. It is a great way to start exploring the area on a motorcycle. The annual PaTRA Dual Sport event is a great way to see what Bald Eagle State Forest has to offer the motorcycle recreation group. For maps of Shade Mountain and Seven Mountains Riding Areas, contact the Bald Eagle District Forest Office, 18865 Old Turnpike Road, Milmont, PA 17845-9376, or call Amy Griffith at 570-922-3344.

S855436

For the 20th annual PaTRA Dual Sport event, the club celebrated in a big way by hosting a two-day event on June 21st and 22nd. The new location in Laurelton at the Union County Fairground was a fantastic switch. What a perfect couple of days for friends old and new to meet for an epic trail ride in central Pennsylvania. At first I was concerned with losing the hot showers and good food because of the new location, but those concerns were put to rest. A new shower house is to be built in 2015. Plus, the riders got a Saturday morning continental breakfast made up of home-baked goods and assorted beverages from the local Lutheran church at their food pavilion on the fairgrounds. On Saturday evening, a ham dinner was served, which included two sides, rolls, a garnish, beverages, and homemade desserts. At each lunch stop on both days they offered an allyou-can-eat-and-drink “snacks fest.” All this was available for one low allinclusive entry fee of $90 for the two days of riding. How can you beat that? Friday night the weather turned wet in isolated spots, making for a dust-free Saturday, and Mother Nature turned on the beauty with the mountain laurel in full bloom. Saturday may have been the shorter day of riding of the two, but it was far more difficult. Trail Boss Steve Bottiger treated the riders to a virgin single-track trail ride through his private property for the first section of the day. Then, for the first time in the 20 years of this event, riders got to experience the rocks, mud, and terrain of Shade Mountain, which was nicknamed the Iron Man Route. The first A+ option was a rocky off-camber uphill, which soon became filled with riders everywhere, followed by another A option. By 10 a.m., the first riders arrived on top of Shade Mountain for snacks, but by 2 p.m., the club had to turn riders away from the options as the muddy rocks had the

Flat Rock Inn Smoke on the Water By Joe Onyon

The Flat Rock Inn hosted its annual “Smoke on the Water” watercross event on July 12 and 13. For those who do not know what watercross is, it is snowmobiles racing on the water! It was the second race of the 2014 season, with the New York State Championship scheduled August 9 and 10 to complete the series. With about 60 racers in attendance, the event was considered a success. The racers really enjoy their sport, and they put on a great show. A full race program was run both Saturday, July 12, and Sunday, July 13. The first part of the race program is drag racing. Sleds line up four at a time and race straight to the finish line. There are different classes, beginning with Trail Amateur, then Semi-Pro, then up to Mods for 600, 700, and 800 CC motors. After the drags are over, there is a brief intermission before the oval races begin. There are both Semi-Pro and Pro Oval classes. Four sleds race at once to complete four laps during heats and semi-finals, and six laps are run for the final. There are always racers who do not make it through all their laps and who end up sinking to the bottom. In addition to the full race program on Saturday, a special class was added. It is called The Garrett Miller Memorial Ride, and it is a Last Man Standing event. The class is open to any racer with a watercross sled legal for one of the classes. It is not a race though. Drivers were required to drain their sled of fuel and were then provided one gallon of fuel by the race director to ensure each racer started

off with the same amount of fuel. The drivers lined up at different points of their choice around the entire pond waiting for the green flag to be displayed, and the goal was to be the last one to not sink or touch land. There were 32 sleds entered in the class so all hit the water at once. It was an amazing sight to see! After a 10 minute battle, a winner was finally declared. Kevin Hunter, a veteran watercross racer from Connecticut, received a special trophy, and his name will be added to a plaque, where all future winners of the event will be displayed as well. This event is going to be held every year during the July watercross race at the Flat Rock Inn. It was an exciting addition to the race program and a great way to honor the memory of Garrett Miller, a watercross “race family” member who passed away in February at age 15 after bravely battling cystic fibrosis. Garrett’s family has been involved with the watercross races at Flat Rock Inn for many years. Flat Rock Inn is donating the trophy and plaque and is also donating all money taken in from this race to a cystic fibrosis charity or any other charities his family chooses in Garrett’s honor. This class is truly one of a kind, and everyone is looking forward to next year’s Garrett Miller Memorial Ride. At the watercross racing action on August 9 and 10 in the New York State Championship, another full race program was set for both Saturday and Sunday, with a special class added to Saturday. A doubles race feature, where two people, a guy and a girl, ride together on a race sled, was slated, with four sleds set to run at a time! This event has always been a spectator favorite in the past and was brought back by popular demand. The August event marked the 25th Anniversary of watercross racing at Flat Rock Inn, and prizes were set to given to individuals wearing a T-shirt or hat from a watercross event from the 1990s during race day.

Freedom RV Rentals By Chas McHenry

We suffered quite a conundrum at our place this summer. We had a great idea for a family-style vacation, but I’m the only one with a camper. With children of all different ages and sizes, primitive tent camping was out of the question, especially when you take into consideration baths, showers, dinner, clothes, rain, heat, etc, etc. Sometimes when you want to vacation, camping with a lot of people can be more work than you’d like. I was looking on the Internet, hoping to find some low-tech tips or camping hacks and found Freedom RV Rentals. I figured, how hard could it be? - and called them, expecting to be told I had to rent either a castoff from the Griswolds’ vacations movies or something completely out of my price range and ability to pay for. Happily and surprisingly, neither of the options I had laid out for myself were the case. I called and got the owner, Tom Schneider, on the phone, not because I asked for him, he just answered the phone that time. I wound up having a half-hour conversation with him all about camping and the fun of it, including also a couple horror stories about tents and rain, and finally getting around to asking about renting a temporary living space from him. He told me about all of their options, from a 30-foot RV all the way down to a two person pop-up. They buy all their equipment new, so they know the complete history and condition of each unit. This not only helps them offer you a great camping experience but allows them to be sure they won’t be called out to a campsite four hours away in the middle of the night to help make something work. The prices were good for the things I wanted. Considering a week

down at the beach will cost approximately $3,000 for eight people, the cost for a camper that would hold eight people was just above half that. You won’t spend more than $1,800 a week for his nicest RV. After he told me about his motorhome/RVs, travel trailers and toy haulers, we decided that a nice travel trailer would fit the bill perfectly. I ended up paying him to deliver it, set it up, and then come take it at the end of the vacation, to save myself the aggravation. Freedom RV Rentals also offers generator rentals and what they call their Housekeeping Kit, which includes pots, pans, pillows, sheets, blankets, and a few other things, making it much easier to just get there and enjoy the trip. They will deliver anywhere they can legally and safely get to. So, if your uncle own 3,500 acres in Erie somewhere and it’s the greatest place to watch meteor showers, they will bring it there for a fee and set it up. Along with the extras you can rent, Freedom offers airport pickup with their RV rentals, which means they will come get you, drive you to their office in East Freedom, Pa., and set you free on the roads. They have had people fly in from other countries and come directly to their offices to pick up RVs to camp all over the region. And, before any person takes possession of the rental, they make sure you have a true handle on operating all the equipment they leave you with. I have to say I really felt like this was all too good to be true, especially considering these are new units, not 15-year-old end-of the-line campers no one wanted anymore. I made all the arrangements with Tom, and when we pulled into Rock Run for the Summer Blast, there it was, set

up in our spot, awning out, water filled, windows open, ready to go and looking pretty nice. All we had to do was go in and put our stuff away, then enjoy the park and the Summer Blast. We had no problems with the camper; the biggest problem was getting used to camping this way. When we were all in there sleeping, it was full - some on the bed, some on the converted table, some on the fold-out couch, and one on the floor, too. For a second I thought, “Wow, here’s the rub. This is going to make it a bad trip.” Then the air-conditioner kicked on, I saw the clock on the microwave, and I looked next door at the tents, and I remembered. My cynical side was pretty upset, it had nowhere to grab hold and say I told you so! I have to say I was very content with the situation. As a family we enjoyed the vacation very much. And almost to the minute that we told Freedom staff members to be there to pick up the camper they were there. All we had to do was make sure our stuff was out of it, and they did their thing. We didn’t have to clean it, grease it, change the oil, air it out, capture the bugs that got in there, or anything. We just packed up, watched everyone else break down their camp, and then left with them. Freedom met their goal with us as customers for sure. The more I talk to Tom and learn about their business, the more I like it. They have delivered campers to Ohio, upstate New York, all the Pa. parks, and to Philadelphia for movie shoots. They have even delivered to trout streams for a President to use while fishing in Pa., which is a pretty cool thing you could sleep in a vehicle where a President has slept! All of my questions about Freedom RV Rentals were answered well and clearly when we used them this summer. I was happy with the prices, especially considering I have an RV and know the costs associated with it. For us to get to Rock Run, it’s less than 10mpg and over 500 miles to get there, then back. In my regular truck, I can pull 18mpg, so add gas, then insurance, then time, tolls, maintenance, cleaning, waterproofing, propane, and hassle. Once you add all that up, it’s undoubtedly cheaper to rent one twice a year. I say twice a year because unlike myself who uses my RV for work, most people who own them only use theirs two to four times a year. If you’re thinking about it, call and ask. You can pick vehicles up as well and take them wherever you want. If it’s a toy hauler you want for a Hatfield McCoy trip, call them and see what it will cost. You won’t be disappointed with their service, their campers or the time you have enjoying hassle-free camping. We sure weren’t. Give Freedom RV Rentals a call and tell them you found out about them in Rec Rider.

CAN YOU SURVIVE A “POLITICAL HEART ATTACK?” By Fred Brown

November 6, 2014, is the general election in Pennsylvania (Pa.). Pa. voters will elect or re-elect a governor, 203 members of the House of Representatives, and 25 state senators, not all 50. In addition, 18 members of Congress will also be elected into office. Are you ready? No, really are you ready? You need to prepare for a potential “political heart attack” going forward. I did not coin that phrase, rather I saw it attached to an online article explaining the basics on how to prevent the consequences that will occur for failure to insure your political health. The “prevention” is far less costly, and it is something I have tried, more successfully than not, to explain and implement with organizations I have represented over the last 37 years. Politics is not a spectator sport and the prevention absolutely does require your active participation. There are three components that make up this prescription: a grass-root/ grass-top network, a good lobbyist, and a political action committee. Briefly, let me pull this together for you. The two most important commodities to a politician are votes and money. As a constituent, a “voter,” you need to get to know the candidates. You can volunteer on their campaigns, inform the candidate on your issues and concerns, invite a candidate to your meetings, or host a reception for the candidate. The role of a lobbyist is to know the process, the players, and to get and keep issues moving through the legislative process along with your elected officials, legislative agency, and executive branches of the government.

The role of a political action committee is to collect voluntary contributions from members or supporters of an organization or association. The contributions will then be disbursed by a vote of the members of the governing board to those candidates that best reflect and support the agenda of the organization. Over the past six months or so I have shared with you the issues that the Pennsylvania Off-Highway Vehicle Association (PAOHV) are engaged in on behalf of the off-road motorized recreation community: land owner liability, trail bike registration, and separating the income and expenditures of the Snowmobile/ATV restricted fund. If you think the “heart health” of off-road recreation is in good shape, you many need a second opinion. I can assure you that those who want to ban the use of snowmobiles, ATVs and trail-bikes are not timid, they are relentless in their vocal opposition to our sport. That is why it is imperative to join with us. In this issue of Rec Rider, as in every issue, is the opportunity to join with other off-roaders and participate in PAOHV. Membership is the insurance you need to buy to ensure your health and to prevent a “political heart attack.” If you do not know who your representative or state senator is you can contact your county voter registration office. You can also check this website: www.legis.state.pa.us If all else fails, give me a call at 717-3191385 or email me at fred-brown@comcast.net.

KORVA Welcomes Full-Size Vehicles Story by Tabb Felty • Photos by Tabbs Photography KORVA (Keystone Off Road Vehicle Association Inc.) is an organization founded by Dennis Felty and John Mickle in 2013. They formed it in an effort to develop a riding area for full-size vehicles and buggies and other off-road vehicles that may not be able to be registered because they are handmade, have no valid registration, or were never intended to operate on public highways. These vehicles and their owners are excluded from private and public land, but KORVA’s intention is to provide an area in which these vehicles can have a little fun, through developing relationships with property owners. This is not their only intention, as they provide proper education on safety and provide liability insurance for the members. There are ongoing discussions being made with landowners about using their land for recreational events for the members of KORVA. The purpose of this is to show that there are plenty of people who are interested in responsible use of the land for full-size vehicles and buggies. Recently I spoke with KORVA member Hans Scherer and he expressed his passion for full-size vehicles and also shared his dreams for KORVA. He wants a place in which rock crawlers and other full-size vehicles can come and have a little fun together as responsible group. His desire of being able to rock crawl or take a trail ride with other vehicles, of enjoying

the same freedom that ATVs, dirt bikes, and side by sides are feeling right now, are on the horizon as a result of this organization. His role is essentially the development of the rock crawlers members of KORVA, which boils down to trying to make sure there is a space for all of us to have fun. His passion and drive account for a lot, but he’s just one member; there are many other members who have their passions as well, and they all run in different classes but are working together to make this a reality. KORVA has hosted two different events this year. One was a dune buggy ride that was put on by John Mickle. For this event, members in dune buggies took a well-guided tour of AOAA property. The other was having full-size vehicles spend three days rock crawling. I was invited to come and take pictures and enjoy this event with them. These events are important because it is helping to get these vehicles noticed as legitimate machines, and it is helping to make headway to ensure these vehicles can secure a spot in the regular off-roading community. If you would like more information on KORVA, what our goals are, and how to become a member, you can visit www.KORVA.org or call either Dennis Felty at 570-640-5735 or John Mickle at 717-439-5246. If you run a full-size vehicle, buggy, crawler, or mudder and are looking for places to run and have a little fun with like-minded people, please visit the website and check out this new group.

June 21 marked the second annual cleanup of the Coal Creek Commerce Center and surrounding Reading Anthracite Property in Saint Claire. Just like with every cleanup that has been organized by Dennis Felty, registration was planned for 7 a.m. and ended at 9 a.m. This gives the volunteers time to get there, sign in, have some coffee and donuts, and relax before the start of the cleanup. There was a 20-person spike over last year’s 21 volunteers, giving us 41 capable and willing volunteers. Hopefully this continues to grow and helps us to get the good word out about off-road riders; our reputation gets better as each cleanup occurs. There was another cleanup scheduled earlier in the year to clean up a well-known parking area called the “Flatts.” Rich Morgan, head of Reading Anthracite Security, was at both cleanups to talk with the volunteers and to show his support for the cleanup efforts. Felty Property Maintenance was also involved in the cleanup, bringing along two dump trucks and a skid loader to clear all the old campfires. Riders have a bad reputation among the general public, that we are rough people who come into the area, trash it, and then leave. Well, I am here to tell you, and the volunteers are here to show you, that we are not like that and many people do clean up after themselves. We are not all rowdy, crazy fools running through the woods causing trouble and creating damage. Many of us grew up in the area and do not appreciate what is happening to our riding area. So in an effort to gain the respect of the community and to set an example for the next generation, these cleanups are coming into play. Both organizers, Brian Dasch and Dennis Felty, would like to give a special thanks to all the volunteers who took their precious Saturday to spend cleaning up large, separate areas of land on each occasion. Independent riders and groups such as Anthracite Trail Riders, Lehigh Valley ATV, Shendo Quad Riders, and Schuylkill County Jeep Alliance were some of the volunteers that showed up to the events to help out. The group would also like to extend a special thanks to all the local franchises and companies that donated supplies to make this cleanup possible: Walmart, Home Depot, Tractor Supply, Pretzel Factory, Vito’s Pizza, Dunkin Donuts, Hannah’s, Dal’s Pizza, Desantis Distributor, Angie’s Market, Treverton Laundromat, and Dollar General. With great neighbors like these and more riders coming around to fight the bad reputation that was earned by a small percentage of careless riders, we know we can show everyone who we really are and that not all off-road enthusiasts should be lumped into the same group. We hope to see you at the next cleanup. A great day of work

By Regina Swinger TRUPA is a group that started in Pennsylvania for trike lovers of all ages. It evolved from a husband and wife duo with a clear passion for three-wheelers into a group of more than 250 two from Pennsylvania and surrounding states who share the same passion. The founding couple, Dave and Regina Swinger, have worked hard to get the word out and let others know that there is a group out there for trike enthusiasts. We get together as often as possible to go on rides, run races, and attend as many other events as possible. The group is growing fast with new members every day. TRUPA works with other organized trike groups from nearby states on how to run events, and we share information on what we’ve learned with each other. With this kind of shared knowledge, TRUPA has not only strengthened and gained members quickly, but also has strong relationships with the other groups. Our group has seen close friendships grow between members who make great memories through shared adventures along the way. With more friendships growing in the group, the camaraderie is easily noticed at events and becomes a draw for new members. With simple things like showing respect for each other on and off the track, helping each other out between motos by checking over machines to ensure safety, and educating the riders new to racing on what they need to do to give them their best shot at making it out of the gate and around to the checkered flag without injury, we stay true to the “United” in our name. TRUPA’s events tend run smoothly with great turnouts of experienced and new racers as a result of this philosophy. For the members who don't care to race, TRUPA also hosts rides. These rides usually consist of a weekend of woods riding and a cookout with a campfire at night. These rides are family-oriented and for all ages and are open to riders of all levels of ability. There is nothing better than spending a weekend with friends new and old, doing the activity you love the best. TRUPA also has members who are custom builders of trikes. These builds are of vintage trikes and beautiful showroom trikes and purpose-built trikes made from all modern parts that are serious contenders when the racing starts. As with most groups, TRUPA also has their collectors; these are guys that got “bit by the bug,” as the trikers would call it. It’s the trike bug, and you just can’t stop buying trikes. Some of these guys have 50 or 100 and maybe even more trikes. It is awesome to see that many trikes in one collection. All these things are the best of what makes TRUPA such a good thing, especially if you’re me, the wife who got to be a part of the evolution of TRUPA. I take great pleasure being a part of this group, as does my husband, Dave. Keeping in line with the diversity of TRUPA, his passion is hill-climbing. So, if you're ever at Beaverdale Hillclimb or Breezewood Proving Grounds or cruising around Facebook and see our page, you should stop and say hi! We love to talk about trikes almost as much as we love to ride them. To see more of TRUPA, look us up on Facebook. Soon we will be debuting with our website, 3WheelerAction.com. If you have a trike, come join us; we love to have new people we can share our love of trikes with.

Trail Notes:

Don’t forget your personal safety equipment any time you go riding: helmet, eye protection, non-skid and close-toed shoes, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. All are great fundamentals to wear each time you ride! p th his dad and pa Denver Miller wi llclimb at Beaverdale hi

Mud Pit By: Stephanie Gehman Welcome back to the Jr wRECking Crew page! Last month we took a look at a variety of race and event types that you can enter with your recreational riding equipment. In this column, we’re going to take a look at a few more them. This month the ones we’ll examine are a bit more extreme and require more specialized or modified equipment to participate.

th Mikara Miller wi at her dad and pap b lim llc hi le da Beaver

The first one is called a Hill Climb. These types of races were first made popular by modified, off-roading motorcycles in Europe, beginning in 1905. The Hill Climb races became popular in the United States a few decades later. The goal of the Hill Climb is to run your vehicle up the side of a hill as high up as you can go, as fast as you can go. If two racers go the same distance up the the hill, then the one with the fastest time is the winner. Hill climbs can be very steep and require a good deal of skill and practice to run these types of courses. Modifications for this generally require making the rear tires farther away from the center of the bike, by making and adding a completely new suspension. A specialized course for motocross racers that’s quite different from normal off-roading, is ice racing. The racers in an ice race will loop around an ice covered oval speedway in a counter-clockwise manner. The speedways are typically about a quarter mile loop. What’s cool about ice racing is that one of the classes of racers use studded tires to compete. They have as many as 500 spikes screwed, or embedded into their bikes’ tires for better traction and performance. Because the dynamics of racing on ice are a lot different then mud or dirt surfaces, racers lean deeply into each of the turns on track, and pretty much count on throttle for steering. Just think of it as “Tokyo Drift” on ice! Requires a LOT of practice! Modifications for ice racing typically require studded tires and lowering the machines as much as possible so you can drift it through the turns. And finally, let’s talk about racing on mud. Mud racing, is also called mud running, mud drags, mud bogging or mudding, depending on what type of equipment is used in the mud race. This type of event requires the racer to see how far they can travel on their vehicle through a pit of mud. The racer that gets the furthest across the pit is the winner, unless two or more racers travel the same distance, then it’s the one that traveled the distance the quickest that wins. ATVs, bikes or similar that are used in mud racing often require modified engines, oversized tires and extra power (lots of it) to carry them through the mud effectively. Wow –that’s a lot of giddy-up and go! Do you know anyone that has participated any of these types of races? Or, do you race in these types of events? Tell us about it! Material for this column was sourced from www.wikipedia.org.

VFTR Views and News By Glen Hershey

The Valley Forge Trail Riders (VFTR) held the inaugural running of the Mountaintop Harescramble on July 19 and 20 in Mahanoy Township, Schuylkill County, Pa. Round 5 of the ECEA Harescramble Series started with the kids/youth classes on Saturday. They were treated to a fun and fast course with a little bit of dust being kicked up. After the dust settled, trophies and over $3,000 worth of tires, goggles, shirts, and GoPros were given out to the smiling young racers. A late-night rain shower ensured Sunday’s adult races would not have a dust problem. As is VFTR tradition, the morning C-class race and the afternoon main event both started on time. Eight-time national enduro champion and Factory KTM rider Mike Lafferty was in town to try out the new venue. After more than two hours of wood racing and bar banging, Lafferty took the win after serious challenges from Tegan Temple, Jesse Groemm, and Craig DeLong. The tally for the weekend was 486 riders entered, a great showing for a Pennsylvania “Rock Run” by any accounts and definite success. Next on the agenda is the Moonshine Enduro on Sunday, Sept. 21, starting at the same location as the harescramble. Although the start location is new, it is mostly the same enduro that won “enduro of the year” for three of the last four years. There is a large parking area. Plus, Mainstay Suites hotel is located 1.5 miles away, with great golf and a restaurant just a half-mile away. The closed course and start control format mean no lights or plate hassles. Just ride up to the check, wait for your time to go, and then gas it and get timed at the end of the trail. Ride and repeat. There is a bonus drawing for pre-entered riders. Get your pre-entry in before the deadline and you get two chances to win back your entry fee, courtesy of our friends at Solid Performance KTM and PowerSeal USA! The entry form is available at www.vftr.org and www.facebook. com/pages/Valley-Forge-Trail-Riders/444180219012588. A Super Bonus Oasis will be at the second gas stop, where Solid

Performance KTM will provide free hot dogs, snacks, and drinks to get you refreshed. They will even be set up to handle flat tire fixes to get your bike back in action. Pennsylvania terrain can be somewhat challenging, but we cater to the B and C rider with course splits and ample time to take a break. You don’t have to ride all the “killer stuff” that the experts do. We’re doing our best to show you a great time, so come on out a give Moonshine a taste. The Valley Forge Trail Riders, founded in 1972, is one of the premier motorcycle clubs in the East Coast Enduro Association and is focused on off-road racing and trail riding in the family-oriented organization. It also holds member events like roadside cleanups, trail maintenance, family fun days, and group trail rides. VFTR based out of Valley Forge, Pa., and has been running events in Schuylkill County for 30 years. Visit www.VFTR.org for more info.

Llewellyn Poker Run 2014

Story by Tabb Felty • Photos by Tabbs Photography What a great way to spend a day with your family and friends - at your local poker runs in the area! Not only is it a great time, but it’s also as a great fundraiser for the fire companies. This year the Llewellyn Poker Run fell on Aug. 2 and brought in over 1,700 people, which is quite a feat for a small town. Many of the participants camped overnight and it made for a full house by morning, and that was just the start! As the morning went on, more and more vehicles kept pulling in. It poured the night before, but Saturday was nice with no rain for the whole day. The poker run was a 31-mile trail ride through various inclines that led the viewer to many different sites. It included a mud area in which participants could douse their vehicles in mud, hoping to make it through to the other side and a spot called the “look-out.” This spot was at the top of the mountain and provided a beautiful view of the valley and a great spot for group pictures. After you spent a great day in the woods trying your hand in a game of poker in hopes of having the best hand, you came back to the fire house to have some great food and to enjoy a show by the band Reckless at night. The event is a great day out of the house and having fun with your favorite machines, but please take a moment to thank all the men and women that volunteer their time to make sure that you and your families are safe. Also, thank them for putting on the event because they all volunteered their time so that you could have the best day possible.

CMATVA Season Recap By Henry Sorgen

Central Mountains ATV Association Inc. (CMATVA) has had a great summer of riding so far this season. We started the summer off with our Memorial Day weekend ride in Potter County; we had 40 members ride 178 miles over the three-day weekend. Next, we had the Tombob Outdoors show film our club for their upcoming season in order to show a family-type of ATV riding. Our next club venture was the Renovo ATV Cruise for a Cure, which 97 of our members rode with 149 other riders to support the fight against cancer. We had a great 46.5-mile ride thanks to DCNR and property owner Tom Charles. The ride helped raise Bucktail Medical over $5,000. This is something our club is proud to support and hopes to be able to continue well into the future. The following day, Tom Charles invited our club on a great private ride on his property and hosted our club at his cabin. He skillfully led us on a 28.5-mile loop around his property, showcasing all the best of his family’s property. We couldn’t thank him enough; it’s always a pleasure to get to explore a new place. We then had 11 members attend a ride at Bloody Skillet and the connector trail, and they rode 53.6 miles at the end of June. Soon after that, we were off to Mountain Ridge ATV Trails on the Fourth of July weekend, where we had 31 members ride 97 miles on a great trail system, and we visited all 48 windmills throughout the trail system, making for some great photo ops and a good story. This was our second year doing this trip, and despite it being held on a holiday weekend, it keeps growing. Our next adventure was to Snow Shoe Rails to Trails for their chicken barbecue.

Our club made this a weekend ride. On the day of the barbecue, we had 30 members come out to support SSRTA at their fundraiser for the Kato Bridge replacement. We rode 78 miles that day and enjoyed every mile of it. The following day, the 17 members that had camped for the weekend at SSRTA went on a 41-mile ride and enjoyed another great day on the trails and the mud holes. Our most recent trip was by 25 members, who met up at Rock Run's Summer Blast Event. We rode 132 miles on a great trail system and enjoyed the midway with all the vendors, especially Rec Rider. It was downsized from the Fisher reunion there last year, but it was more enjoyable this year; with fewer people, it was easier to get more of the vendors’ time and discuss products, food, gear, and machines. The trails were also a little less crowded, at times, making it a little simpler to enjoy them. CMATVA has two guided rides every month of the year. Some of the rides are weekend camping rides, where you can ride all weekend or just ride one of the days. We are a family-type ATV riding club that enjoys the trails and the mud. We don't have that need for speed like some others do. But we do respect the trails we ride and enjoy riding as a big family. We have our 11th annual rodeo coming up on Saturday, Sept. 27, in Allport, Pa. This is our main fundraiser for the year. Check out our website at cmatva.org and see what our club is all about, and then come out to a ride and be a part of the family.
