Letter from the Editor
I thoroughly enjoy the diversity of fall weather, the colors and activities we get to experience and of course the coming holidays! It sounds odd sitting here two weeks before Halloween and thinking about Christmas, but I just got done putting the Rec Rider Christmas Gift Guide together for November and it’s got me in the mood. This month Rec Rider has created a formal Gift Guide for off-road riders. As you flip through the magazine, the second page and the next to last page are full of gift ideas. I was really excited to put this together for our readers, and our advertisers and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I enjoyed putting it together. I hope you all find something in there that suits a rider in your life or maybe yourself, after all. You have to take care of yourself too, right? We have some good stuff for you in Rec Rider this month. As usual we have the Jr wRECking Crew, then we have ECEA’s Big Bass Harescramble, CMATVA’s ATV Rodeos, and more. Don’t forget Rec Rider doesn’t quit for any season, and we want to know where and when all your fall and winter events are going to be. Snowmobile, ice racing, ATV rides – you name it – and we want to be a part of it with you! If you know of any events, please send them to Info@RecRider.com so we can get them in the magazine and help get people there! And with that we are off to another issue, have fun and be safe on the trails!!

A Vintage Weekend By Chris Banks
On the weekend of Sept. 26 and 27, a group of friends known as Twin Creeks Vintage Riders promoted two great events: a vintage cross-country race on Saturday and vintage motocross on Sunday. The Twin Creeks Vintage Riders are a small group of friends that promote these types of events to preserve the history of motorcycling and relive the past, according to club member Ed Roman, who is one of the founding members. Without actually saying so, it is why we all do it: for the love of the sport. Promoting vintage events is nothing new to the club as they have been holding at least two vintage events every year for the last 14 years. Allan’s Farm in Lawton, Pa., is about 10 miles West of Montrose, Pa., and 25 miles south of Endicott, N.Y. It is not very hard to find or get to. But the setting after you drive down the long rocky driveway when you enter the field is just awesome. A long open clear area to play or ride or camp is followed by a beautiful tree line, with an awesome stream running beyond that. Under those trees is where I set camp for the weekend. Everything is accessible, yet you feel like no one can find you. Twin Creek Vintage Riders teams up with the American Historic Motorcycle Racing Association (AHMRA) to sanction their weekend. Teaming up with AHMRA is a large part of promoting these great vintage events. AHMRA is a country-wide organization that helps promote all types of vintage racing: road racing, motocross, dirt track, trials, and cross-country. If you’re interested in vintage motorcycling, you can go to the AHMRA website at www.AHMRA.org. Saturday morning started off very foggy and very quiet. There were not very many riders who took advantage of the great overnight camping at the property, but the ones who did had a very enjoyable evening. Late in the morning the fog started to burn off to awesome blue skies and perfect temperatures as riders were entering the pit area. At around 12:30 p.m. the riders’ meeting was held and then right at 1 p.m. the first of three one-hour cross-country motos started on the 2.9-mile course. There were 44 riders on Saturday for the technical single track that was mostly fresh-cut trail. The vintage and post vintage bikes averaged around 15-minute lap times and completed five laps while the modern class was closer to 11-minute lap times while completing six laps. Everyone exited the woods without injury and wore a large smile on their face. No complaints were heard about the tight mountainous course.
The evening finished off with about half of the cross-country rigs camping out and enjoying the perfect weather that Mother Nature provided for the weekend. A few others retired to local hotels for a primitive night in preparation for the motocross on Sunday. Sunday morning started just like Saturday, foggy, but it burned off a lot earlier, and the sun was bright by 9:30 a.m. The riders’ meeting and the motocross practice started soon after. The course was an awesome 1.3 miles of natural terrain. Hills, valleys, and natural jumps swept around trees and the pond with banked and off-camber turns. This is the way motocross started and what theses bike were intended for. There were 139 riders who ran a moto in the morning and then one in the afternoon. There were some people entering multiple classes. There was 20 motos overall for the day with a midway lunch break. WER owner and huge motorcycle enthusiast Drew Smith raced the crosscountry and motocross on this weekend, and Steve Hatch ran on Saturday, helping two of his students learn woods-racing techniques. You never know who you will run into at the races. Special thanks go out to Jim Allen and his family for the use of their land, as well as the concessions. Ed Roman, Ray Rondinello, Chris Holderdge, Jay Lane, Tim Fergusen and his family, and Dave Jennings also deserve thanks for the time and effort they put into this. I do apologize for others I missed. If you get a chance, make sure to check out one of these great events. There is fun for motorcycle enthusiasts of all ages.

Pagoda Mc Sunday, Oct. 12
Big Bucks in October! • Story & Photos by John Sherer With a purse of over $5,000 put up by sponsors for the weekend, including Twin Air USA, All Balls Racing, Amped Apparel, Boyesen, Evolution Power Sports, Evo Industries, MKS Motokicks, and Mototowels, and GPMX pay out in 250 a and Open a, the event was sure to bring in top riders from several states. Saturday’s practice rounds were hampered by rain showers, but with some hard work over the prior week to prepare the racing surface, the track soaked up most of the precipitation, and by early afternoon conditions were shaping up for some good rounds. Sunday’s weather was near perfect for racing. There were blue skies, and temperatures were in the 60s. When talking with some of the riders after the morning practice rounds, the consensus was there was a lot of good traction and several racing lines. With two rounds of 19 motos, every class got its chance to shine with some outstanding racing from 50cc to 250 a and Open a. The 50cc 7-8 stock watched rider Randall (John) Meyers #98 and Braxton Keiffer #331 both put in good efforts in their motos. Pulling double duty in 65cc 7-9 and 85cc 9-11, Brian Espinosa #214 and Ryan Canaguier #372 pushed each other to their limits in each class. Strong gate numbers in Open b 22 didn’t stop riders Coty Shock #119 from Dover, Del.; Michael Giovanniello #74; and Brandon Hartranft #40 rise to the top. Open c featured 29 riders at the gate. They blasted off with jack Genovese #221, Logan Huff, and Nicholas Mcghee #395 showing the way around the circuit. This is just a short summary of some of the racing. For full details on all the classes, go to www.pagodamc.org/. The biggest draws for the crowd were the 250 a and Open a Top Pro Riders, including Ryan Zimmer #641, Tony Archer #285, Brock Schmelyun #98, Dakota Kessler #449, Robert Piazza Jr. #271, William Carling #139, Jacob Grove #91, #535 Joey Peters, and more. 250 a was the first race out of the gates, and spectators filled the bleachers and packed in along the fence. Once the gate dropped, 25 riders charged into turn one, with only a minor incident involving Joey Peters getting squeezed out on the inside and pounding into a few hay bales. Everyone else made it through and went on to awe the crowd with fast lap times. With it being a 10-lap moto, endurance came into play as the laps counted down. In the first moto, Ryan Zimmer #641, Tony Archer #285, and Dakota Kessler finished in the top three. 442 Gregory Pamart (Frenchie) taking some roost in Open A
The calendar reads October, there’s color on the trees, and there’s more great racing to be seen. Make sure you catch the eighth annual Big Bucks race next fall; you’ll never get a better chance to capture some of the best pro talent from the area and nearby states without the 3- to 4-hour drive to a national event. Thank you, Pagoda Motorcycle Club and all the sponsors, for all the effort in making the Big Bucks race a success. We all look forward to next year. John E. none are bent or broken; if so, replace. If there is a "pull out" where the stud gets pulled out of the track, it is unwise to replace it, as the hole drilled for the original stud is now too large to accept another. Now that the outside of the sled has been examined, open up the hood and see what needs to be looked after there. The first thing to inspect is the drive belt. Check for fraying and cracks and also be attentive to the amount of mileage that is on the belt. If it is up over 1,000 miles on the belt, I usually replace it no matter what. Check the spare belt for dry rot and cracks as well. This sometimes happens due to extreme heating and cooling under the hood. Always have a spare belt; it is no fun getting caught out on the trail with a busted belt and no spare to get home! Now check the air box, making sure that it is not cracked or broken. Sleds are designed for optimum performance using the designed air box, so be sure it is in good condition. Next, inspect the fuel lines and oil lines to make sure they are soft and pliable. If not, there is a potential of cracking and failure. Also, oil pump lines, if they become hard and brittle, should be replaced. Replace them if they are even remotely questionable. Time to get a little more hands on. Now move to the engine itself. First, do a compression check using a compression tester. Arguments can be made here, so I choose to check both cold compression and warm compression conditions. Warm compression will be slightly lower from cylinder expansion, but both cylinders should read 100lb or more depending on engine CC. The cylinders should be
S862836
There are many things out there that can ruin a great day of riding, but there are steps riders can take to prohibit possible mechanical failure from being one of them. Individuals can do something as simple as a sight check or they can get down and dirty, removing items for closer inspection. It all depends on how quickly they want to get the prep done and how thorough they wish to be. First, do the sight inspections. Start at the front of the sled - lift the skis and check the carbide runners for wear. These items are going to wear no matter what, so these should be inspected not only preseason, but before and after every ride, as they take quite a beating on the trails. Next, make sure the headlights are in working condition. Headlights not only provide vision at night, but visibility for other riders during the day. Now, we will look at the controls. Be sure the brake lever is free and the brakes are working when you pull the lever. Check the switch controls and make sure the plastic is not split and that the beam selector works properly. Make sure the kill switch and the tether (if your sled is equipped) work properly and shut off the engine when used. Check the rear brake light, ensure the bulb is not blown and that the red lens is there and complete. Now, move to the snow flap. On water-cooled sleds, this aids in transferring snow up underneath the tunnel to the coolers, helping to cool the sled. If the snow flap is torn off or ripped, replace with a new flap. Moving on to the track, inspect the track for dry rot, splits or tearing. If any are present, replace the track. Also, if there are studs, be sure to check that

within 10% of each other. If not, the engine should be torn down, and the problem should be fixed. If piston and rings are required, I always change both sets out to be sure both cylinders get the same performance advantage of fresh pistons and rings. Also, I recommend starting out the season with fresh spark plugs. Old plugs tend to foul out and will leave a rider by the side of the trail, under the hood and swapping out plugs. If the plugs are changed during the preseason inspection, unexpected pit stops can be avoided. Now, move to the carburetion/intake side of the engine. First, remove the air box and the carburetor. If end-of-season storage prep was performed on the sled, the carbs should be good to go. Next, remove the rubber intake boots. This is where a good eye is needed, as each carb boot should be checked for cracks and dry rot. If any of these conditions exist, replace the intake boots. When an intake boot is cracked, the engine runs lean and the engine burns down. Last in the intake line is the reed cage. Pull out the reed cage and inspect the reed pedals, making sure they are not chipped, cracked, loose, or broken. If they are, replace with the stock reeds or any other aftermarket reeds if so desired. Last thing to check is the chain case and the suspension. It is a good idea to drain and refill the chain case oil. When draining the old oil, be sure to keep an eye out for large chunks of aluminum, as this is a sign of gear or chain failure. There will be some shavings in the oil, but there shouldn’t be anything huge. Replace the oil with a good quality chain case oil. Next, check the front shocks to be sure all mounting bolts are in and tight. Moving back to the rear skid, be sure to check the rear scissors are tight and no play is visible. There should be grease fittings on both the front and rear scissors, so be sure to liberally grease

these fittings with a quality grease. Check the rear shocks to be sure they are not loose and all bolts are in place. Check the slides, these are wear items and should be examined closely to be sure they are not run down to where the bottom of the skid rail is visible. If they look to be worn, or worn in an uneven manner, replace as needed. After the preseason inspection, riders should be ready to go out and hit the trails as soon as the snow flies. Have a safe, fun season, and if we don't see you before, maybe we'll see you out on the trail! "Indy" sledshedtv.com

Central Mountains ATV Association (CMATVA) held its 11th annual Rodeo Event on Sept. 27 at Flat Run Speedway in Allport, Pa. We had 49 riders compete in the different events: The Clover Leaf, the Flag Race, the Key Hole, the Obstacle Course and the Mud Bog. We had a larger crowd this year to watch the riders perform the challenging tasks. This year we added grannie panties to our obstacle course, where the riders had to stop at a station, get off their machine, put on an oversized pair of grannie panties over top of their riding pants; they then had to continue through the obstacle course but stop before the finish line to remove them before crossing the finish line. The crowd seemed to enjoy the added feature to the obstacle course and so did the riders. We also added a battery-operated class to the lineup this year and had three battery-operated units running in all the events. It was great to see the younger generation getting involved in the sport that we all love. One of the highlights for the little children was Paul Eggler pulling the club’s barrel train. Paul towed the barrel train for 8.5 miles, which was a lot of trips with children around the parking area and fields. We would like to thank all of our sponsors who donated prizes and money. Without our sponsors we wouldn’t have been able to make this yearly event happen. We would also like to give a special thank you to three sponsors, Williamsport Honda, Carnes Equipment, and Revved for God, which had a display during the Rodeo Event. We would also like to thank Dom and Tonya Orwick for donating the race track for our club to hold the Rodeo Event for the past 10 years. Additionally, I would like to thank all the club members that helped to make this another successful event. Without our hardworking and dedicated club members, we wouldn’t have made everything run as smoothly and problem-free. We all work as a team for the benefit of our club to reach our one goal of providing a safe, family-oriented ATV riding club. We hope everyone who came to the rodeo had a great time and enjoyed the different events and great food, and hopefully you walked away with some of the great prizes that were being given away. We hope to see you again next year. Bring your friends with you. We have posted pictures on our website, cmatva.org, for everyone to see what our club rodeo is all about. Come join us on one of our club rides for free so you can see what our ATV riding club is all about. Join now and we will include your 2014 membership. Memberships are $10.00 for a single person or $15.00 for a family membership.

Trail Notes: Consider installing hand guards or gauntlets on the handlebars of your equipment to keep your hands warm but protected from the wind during the colder months. t rd 10 AWRCS 90cc star
by Aaron Hovis
Mud Pit Cold Weather Equipment Prep By: Stephanie Gehman In last month’s column, we discussed how to prepare you for cooler weather riding with the appropriate clothing and cold weather accessories. This month we’ll take a look at some steps you can take with your equipment to make sure it’s ready for the colder months, too. The most important thing to do before you hit the trails is to examine your vehicle and equipment from top to bottom to make sure that everything is in good working order. The last thing that you want to happen is something that could have been prevented. In addition to your normal vehicle maintenance (air filter, tire pressure, fuel, brakes, etc.), remember to add in these following extra steps to help make cold weather riding successful. Before cold weather riding, inspect the frame for cracks or damage. Then, replace all the vehicle’s fluids with coolants and lubricants that are appropriate for the temperatures you expect to be riding in. Next, lube the control cables. Follow this up by cleaning the electrical connections and the chassis. After you’ve finished up the cleaning, grease the connections and chassis lube points. You may also wish to lower the air pressure in your tires for better traction and if you have a windshield available for your apparatus, consider installing it to keep debris and colder wind from hitting you while riding. Some other steps to take before hitting the trails: Know where you are going and let someone know you’ll be there and never ride alone. Don’t head off to explore a new area that may be snow covered; it will make it even harder to navigate. And even if you know the area you’ll be riding, make sure to pack a survival kit on your vehicle for any worst-case scenarios. These are just some of the basic preparations for cooler weather riding. If you’ve got some great tips that you’d like to share on this subject, post them to our Facebook page or email us at wreckingcrew@recrider.com!

Tar Hollow ATV Ride Review Photos and Story by Mike Petrone
What’s up, riders! It’s Mike Petrone, a.k.a. mudfreak2012. I recently attended Tar Hollow’s ATV ride in Hancock, N.Y., on the weekend of Oct. 4 and 5. The two-day event began on Saturday afternoon with the gates opening at 4 p.m. About 80 riders attended the night event; either they brought their own RV or set up a tent on the grounds, or they checked into the Hancock Motel with a 10 percent discount. As for food, there was the option to grill on the premises or get food from the Cook Shack. (The chili is off the hook!) This time, I decided to camp out to get the full experience. I got there at about 4 p.m. and set up my tent while my buddy fired up his grill and started cooking some food. It was great to just hang out by the campfire. I was able to talk up the event with some new riders and find out some of regulars’ feelings on the Tar Hollow ride. One thing that both experienced and newbie riders had in common was that everyone was super excited for the Sunday ride. I can't blame them; it’s a really awesome event. The organizers at Tar Hollow just added a Saturday-night ride through the trails. It was cool going up and down the hills and through the mud at night. It’s a totally different experience riding at night ... not to mention a great idea. It gives the newbies a sneak peek at the trails for the Sunday ride and reminds the regulars about their previous Tar Hollow riding experiences. It was great! Before we knew it, it was Sunday morning. An egg sandwich from the Cook Shack in the morning was the perfect way to get the day started. Then it
was time to hit the trails. Tar Hollow has so many different classes of ATV riding. The main trail is really simple; the terrain has a little of everything for the average rider. If you are looking for an adrenaline rush, you could try some of the technical trails to challenge yourself. You can ride one or all 10 “hero loops”; they are very creative. All of the “hero loops” connect to the main trail. You can be cruising down the main trail and make a left or right into any hero loop; once you're done, you will come right back out onto the main trail. And you can do it over and over again if you want. Hero Loop 5A, also known as Jim’s Hill, is where you’ll get your biggest adrenaline rush; the trail has tons of loose soil and loose rocks. On top of that, it’s a very steep hill with crazy turns before you make it to the top. Unfortunately, since the loop is a quarter of a mile long, some riders only make it halfway there and need into be winched up! My personal favorite of the hero loops is Mudfreak. It's not deep, but there’s mud, and you and your machine are going to get muddy (Who doesn't like mud?!?!). My buddy Matt and I were defeated, despite our best efforts by the trails’ technical areas. The rims on both of our machines got bent up pretty bad. But I’m not complaining. That's why we ride these trails: to see if we can overcome the terrain by hitting the biggest hill or riding down craziest rock field. The ride is always a challenge. This time, we defeated the Concord loop, thanks to our fellow riders who helped us fix our bikes. The Tar Hollow crew is always thinking about others, whether it is supporting a girls’ basketball team or hosting other ATV rides. This ride is another example of that, as Tar Hollow is giving a portion of the proceeds of this event to “4 Wheeling 4 Healing.” “4 Wheeling 4 Healing” is a family-run nonprofit organization based out of Albany, N.Y., that takes children with chronic illnesses, along with their families, on trail rides. The organization owns a side-by-side ATV with four seats, a special seatbelt, a five-point harness, and a safety net to keep riders safe. It's always an honor to meet people who go out of their way to help children with chronic illnesses, and this is a great way to give children some fun when dealing with difficult times. At the end of the ride, a drawing was held. Riders won different prizes, ranging from free admission to the next event, cash, and more! This is why Tar Hollow is a natural at hosting ATV rides; they are always thinking outside of the box, adding various activities to each event. And have no fear; they have more tricks up their sleeve for the next event. This event continues to grow with every ride. It's absolutely a blast here. As always, this event could not have been made possible without the “Three Steves” and Art Tompkins, local property owner. The “Three Steves” asked Art to host the first Tar Hollow ATV event for a bunch of crazy ATV riders. A year later, here we are at the second October ride, and it was a blast. A big thank you to the “Three Steves” and Art Tompkins for helping to create these awesome memories!

ECEA Big Bass Fishing Derby and Hare Scramble Hosted by Ridge Riders Motor Cycle Club • Photos and Story by Joann Hauser

The ECEA and Ridge Riders put on another great event. This event did not just offer the ECEA Fast Kids an action-packed course with some trails and grass track, but also after the race on Saturday a fishing derby, where the kids were given a chance to win prizes by catching a fish. Once someone caught a fish, a bell would go off and the first person who caught a fish would win a prize. This is the second year for Ridge Riders to offer this to the ECEA Fast Kids, and even though it was a little later in the season this year, the Fast Kids caught some fish and really enjoyed themselves. The biggest fish that was caught, which was actually before the contest even started, was a largemouth bass caught by Kyle Forte. There was also a nice trout caught by Brandon Reiner during the derby that won a prize. On Saturday night, Ridge Riders took it a step further for the adults, offering live music by Glenn Acker, a Ridge Riders sponsor who also gave the event over $1,000 worth of gear that was given out to the pee-wee youth and B event. Ridge Riders were voted to be last year’s hares cramble of the year, and I can certainly see why. Will they be voted hare scramble of the year two years in a row? It’s going to be a hard decision because there have been some really great events. Saturday’s race for 50cc, pee-wee and youth was up 20 percent from last year, said Mike and Jen Kearney, which the club was very happy about. This year the track offered grass track and trails. Let’s find out what some of the kids thought of the track. Dalton Bloom, who took the overall win for the youth, thought the track was fun and fast and really rocky in the woods. Michael Beeler, who came in second overall youth, said, "The course was awesome - fun, fast, and slippery - everything I love in a race!” And from the even younger racers, Nathan Dunley, who got to race the 50cc, then pee-wee, had this to say about the course: “I really liked the track because it was fast and not muddy.” He said it was one of the most rocky races of the year and he didn't mind the rocks during the 50cc. Then in the 65cc race, he had the lead for about 40 minutes, but because of the rocks, he was riding so hard and holding the grips so tightly that his arms and hands got numb, which made him fall back to second place. He said the 65cc race was fun because there were some big flat rocks he could use as jumps and a rock wall crossing that was fun. Nathan Dunlay came in first overall in 50cc and then placed in second for the pee-wees. It was a great day of racing for the Fast Kids. On day two of Big Bass Hare Scramble, first up to race the course were the morning racers, Kim Knapp, who races the women’s class and who placed second, had this to say about the event: “You couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day or perfect time of year to hold a race in the stunning Pocono Mountains of Mount Cobb, Pa. The fall leaves were changing color, the sky was crystal blue, and the temperature was perfect for a day of hare scramble racing with some really cool folks. While this is my first season out with the East Coast Enduro Association (ECEA) women's series, I really enjoyed the course that the Ridge Riders Motorcycle Club (RRMC) put together. Although the course was mostly grass track and wasn't quite as technical as some of the other race locations have been, I thought it was a nice change of pace as it tested a different set of skills. The grass track tested our right and left hand cornering skills and our sense of direction. At times, it felt like we were scrambling mice in a puzzle-like maze trying
to find our way out - I thought it was a blast and if anything it offered great viewing for the crowd! At the end of the day what was evident is that the RRMC and the ECEA put a lot of energy and effort into the event, which was evident given the amount of staking and taping necessary for a grass track course full of twists and turns! What made it even better is that I got to take home a cool Big Bass plaque!” For the morning race, the top overall winners were Justin Lafferty in first place, Chris Gordon in second place, Jake Ross in third place, Justine Ware in fourth place, and place Zach Yeager in fifth place. The morning race hole shot winner for the ECEA was, from the women’s class, Victoria Rawden, who also took the first-place spot for the class. Kim Knapp took second. As the main event neared, the riders began to gear up to hit the starting line. At 1 p.m., the flag dropped and the AA riders took off, with the holeshot going to William Schoeneberg, who placed second overall. The overall win went to Kyle Mcdonald, who also holds second place overall for the year. Taking third place was Christopher Stonebrink, who also took the A overall win. In fourth was Jack Lafferty Jr., and in fifth was Joesph Ferraro. Another top spot winner for the class was George Luchelle, who rides B-200. He got his fifth straight first-place win and third place overall B and is in first place overall for the year. He has truly been on fire, this year and same for last, as also got the overall in his class last year. It looks as he will do the same this year. It was truly a great event. At this time, I would like to put out a very special thank you to the landowners, Norman Harris and his family, who went above and beyond to welcome the ECEA and Ridge Riders and all the riders who came out to this event. They truly went the extra mile for everyone who showed up. For example, there was a rider who was on his way to the event, but his vehicle broke down. The landowners took it upon themselves to help out. They went and picked the young man up so he could race. They had his car towed, and they lent him their own tuck to get back home and to come back to get his vehicle once it was fixed. Incredible! Thank you so much for your land use for the second year in a row and for allowing us to use all you have to offer, great fishing for the kids, and awesome riding for the ECEA. As hospitality goes, you guys are truly number one! I also like to put a big thanks out to Glen Acker for the jamming music and for sponsoring Ridge Riders with this event. It might just get them another hare scramble of the year win.
