Aquatics AQUATICS DURING THE eXPANSION/RENOVATION All indoor pools and spas are CLOSED for renovation through August 31, 2014. The pumps, filtration, chemical and UV systems, and air handling systems will be replaced. Once we re-open, we will have more control of the indoor pool conditions. In addition to the mechanical systems, we will be replacing the tile on the pool deck and the bleachers. We will also be addressing some drainage issues.

The outdoor pool will be open through October 2014. During the time it would normally be closed for the winter season, the mechanical systems will be replaced. As part of the expansion/renovation project, an indoor 8-lane lap pool will be added. This pool is expected to be available in December 2015 or January 2016.

Aquatics Inclement Weather Policy at Cain Outdoor pool lightning in the area

severe storm or pouring rain

Lightning can be detected three ways: 1) lightning is seen by a staff member or patron; 2) thunder is heard by a staff member or patron; or 3) the lightning detection system sounds one long blast. When lighting is detected, the Cain Outdoor Pool will close for the safety of all patrons and staff. Patrons should exit the pool and seek shelter. The pool will remain closed up to thirty minutes after lightning was last seen and/or thunder was heard or when the lightning detection system gives the all-clear (three short horn blasts).

Severe storms and pouring rain decrease the visibility of the bottom of the pool. For the safety of all patrons, the Cain Outdoor Pool will close when the lifeguards can no longer see the bottom of the pool. The pool will re-open for activity when the storm has passed and the bottom of the pool is visible.

rec expansion Since the opening of the Student Recreation Center almost twenty years ago, the Texas A&M student body has increased by twenty-five percent and continues to grow substantially. With an average of over 1.2 million entries per year, the Rec Center has essentially operated at capacity from the beginning. In order to address this problem and accommodate a larger portion of the student body, Rec Sports has embarked upon an extensive expansion/ renovation of the Rec Center. The $54 million expansion/renovation project includes 113,000 square feet of new construction, which will increase the size of the Rec Center by twenty-five percent, and 56,000 square feet of renovation. The project is being funded without an increase in the Recreational Sports fee! Specific improvements to the facility include: • Increased Strength & Conditioning Space: Size of the current weight room, which houses both strength and cardio equipment, will be doubled and will include the addition of a personal training suite and an indoor turf area for movement training such agility and speed work, plyometrics, bodyweight and core training exercises. • Additional Gymnasium: The addition of a new gymnasium will increase open-recreation opportunities by adding multi-use court space that can accommodate two basketball courts, four volleyball courts and one soccer court. • New Activity Rooms: Three new activity rooms will be added to provide additional space for Group RecXercise classes, Specialty Classes and heavy bag/boxing activities.

Two larger, multi-use rooms will be constructed to accommodate student groups and outside events, and a large, auditorium-style meeting room seating approximately 120 will also be added. • Second Entrance: An additional entrance will be built on the south side of the facility, facing Olsen Field. • Outdoor Plaza: An outdoor plaza will be constructed on top of the expanded weight and fitness room and will include a large patio space with outdoor kitchen facilities. • Additional Pool: An eight-lane, twenty-five meter indoor lap pool will be added to reduce scheduling conflicts with aquatic events in the natatorium. • Natatorium Renovation: Retrofitting of all mechanical components, as well as cosmetic upgrades including new tile, paint, lighting, bleachers, etc. will be completed. • Lighting Retrofit: All light fixtures will be replaced throughout the facility to improve light efficiency and reduce energy costs. Although the Rec Center will remain open throughout the expansion process and interruption to member access should be limited, some facilities and programs may be unavailable at times. The expansion and renovation project is scheduled to be complete in January 2016. Upon completion, the Rec Center will be among the nation’s top collegiate recreational facilities.

strength & conditioning Weight and Fitness Room

Personal Training

Due to the expansion and renovation of our main strength & conditioning space, the weight and fitness room is now located on courts 1 & 2 in the Student Recreation Center. Although the situation is not optimal, we assure you that we have done our best to set up this temporary location to accommodate our members’ needs! We will still be able to provide almost all of the strength and cardio equipment that was previously located in the weight and fitness room including: a wide variety of cardiovascular equipment, a large free weight area, all of our plate loaded and pin select strength machines, and an area for stability balls, medicine balls, ab/core training, and stretching. Our strength and conditioning staff is always available to help you learn how to properly use the equipment, give you exercise advice, or even give you a spot during a lift. Please feel free to ask our friendly staff members for assistance whenever needed!

Let our nationally-certified personal trainers develop a comprehensive exercise program specifically for you! Our personal trainers can assess your fitness goals, develop a workout plan for you, teach you how to properly perform resistance training and cardiovascular conditioning exercises, and keep you motivated. To register for personal training services, visit the Member Services Desk or call 979.862.7443.

Fitness Assessments Wondering how fit you are? Let one of our personal trainers complete a personal fitness assessment with you. Our integrated fitness assessment includes mobility and stability screening as well as measuring body fat percentage, circumferences, resting heart rate, blood pressure, muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular fitness and flexibility. This assessment will serve as the foundation upon which a program focusing specifically on your individual needs and goals can be designed.

Body Composition Testing Wonder what your body fat percentage is and how much lean mass you have? Find out with our body composition testing. Our experienced staff will test your body fat percentage and give you the data you need to take the next step to a healthier you!

Expansion and Renovations Our Weight and Fitness Room has been overcrowded for many years. As part of the Rec Center expansion and renovation project, we are addressing the issues of lack of space and overcrowding in the Weight and Fitness Room. The room is currently 14,500 square feet and after the expansion it will be more than 32,000 square feet! The room will include a 10,500 square foot free weight area, almost double the amount of cardio equipment, an indoor turf area for various activities. There will also be a personal training suite, and both women’s and men’s restrooms. Although our current situation is not optimal, some exciting things are about to happen in your Student Recreation Center and we are thrilled to be able to expand and improve our facilities for the Texas A&M community!

sport clubs association The Texas A&M Sport Clubs Association provides the opportunity to compete against clubs from other collegiate institutions at the state, regional, or national level in 34 different sports, and allows members to learn or enhance their skills in a recreational setting. Each club is administered by students, has practice times and facilities, and receives some monetary support. To help subsidize the cost of travel and equipment, clubs may charge dues and participate in fund-raising activities. While the Sport Clubs staff and the Department of Recreational Sports assist clubs in securing needed funds, facilities and equipment, the emphasis is on student leadership and development. Students are directly responsible for all aspects of operating and managing a successful, competitive organization. As a result, Sport Clubs present a unique opportunity for students to develop both athletic and leadership abilities. Since 1974, the Sport Clubs program has captured over 200 overall team and singleevent national championships and hundreds of conference championships. For more information, the names of current club representatives, and Sport Club event schedules, visit the Sport Club Office in room 250 of the Student Rec Center, call 979.862.1996, e-mail sportclubs@rec.tamu.edu or visit our website at recsports.tamu.edu.
