Where to Recycle Everything Else? Many items that are recyclable are not collected curbside or in your building’s program, but that doesn’t mean they should end up in the garbage. • Broward County offers three locations to recycle your electronics and Hazardous Waste. For more information visit http://www.broward.org/WasteAndRecycling/WasteDisposal/Pages/HouseholdHazardousWaste.aspx • Clothing can be donated to nonprofit organizations who either sell the items at a thrift shop or ship them to a textile recycler. • Many grocery stores collect plastic bags for recycling. You can usually find the bins in front of stores. Remember to bring yours for recycling on your next shopping trip! • The Broward County Sheriff hosts free medication recycling services combined with paper shredding events. Corks wreath All you need is some old wine corks, some beads, a bit of ribbon and a piece of mistletoe. 1. Poke holes into all the corks.

Winter Snow Globe 2. Pull the ribbon through the corks and beads.

You will need a jar (with lid) of your choice, waterproof glue, glitter, distilled water, and figurines. 1. Glue the figurines onto the inner side of the jar lid, and wait for it to dry.

3. Carefully and tightly screw on the jar lid, cleaning up any water that spills out. That’s it. Your snow globe is ready!

The World of Plastics

Part one: Many plastics for many uses

Let’s go back to being a little chemist for a minute to understand what a plastic is. Plastics fall under a much larger category of materials called polymers. Polymers can be found as synthetics like thermoplastics and rubbers; or can be found naturally like your own DNA, and proteins like your hair, wool, silk, or cellulose from trees (which is used to make paper). The word plastic refers to a broad spectrum of products, typically synthetic (man-made), and are used in everyday life. They are produced in large chemical plants, using mostly fossil oil, and more recently, crops like corn or sugar cane. Raw Materials

Monomers

Here is a list of common plastics you might find in your household, along with their typical uses. In some finished products, the plastics number is indicated: Polyethylene Terephthalate: Your typical plastic water and soda bottles, high heat resistance for prepared food trays, boil-in-the-bag food packaging. Also used for clothing and carpet fibers.

Fossil oil

High Density Polyethylene: High chemical and UV resistant, durable plastics. Used in making detergent, bleach, and fabric conditioner bottles; snack food boxes and cereal box liners; milk and non-carbonated drink bottles; and toys, buckets, rigid pipes, crates, plant pots, plastic wood, garden furniture, wheeled refuse bins, and compost containers.

Renewable Starch or Sugar crops

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC): Main applications are in building and construction, due to PVC’s high flame and electrical resistance. Used to make pipe, house siding, window framing, electrical cable sheathing.

Making plastics is like playing with Legos of multiple shapes and colors. Only your imagination is the limit. There are thousands of plastics today, and each was designed to have a particular set of properties and performances, like these examples: - Transparent or opaque - Glossy or matte - Heat, UV, or flame resistant - Hard or soft at room temperature - Barrier to oxygen or moisture - Strong at low temperatures - Conducting or resistant to electricity

Low Density Polyethylene: This soft plastic has multiple applications in packaging, but its main use is in standard plastic bags.

- Biodegradable - Durable - Resistant to scratches - Cheap or expensive - Water repellant - Food approved

Polypropylene: Very similar to HDPE, PP is used when high transparency is required. Due to high breakage resistance at low temperatures, PP is used for cold environment packaging. Polystyrene: This very cheap plastic can be used for many low performance packaging applications such as plastic cups, both rigid and transparent, or foamed and opaque. All the others : The number of other plastics is very large, and includes plastics blends. Example are Polycarbonate, nylon, ABS.

Short Bio of the Author

Dr. Stephane Girois has spent over 20 years in the field of Plastics. After 2 years of research at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, in the field of polymer/plastic performance improvement, he started his career in the R&D lab of a large petrochemical firm in Pennsylvania. Over the next 20 years, Dr. Girois developed and patented new polymers that have been used all around the world in building and construction materials, food packaging, and automotive and electronics components. From improving the performance of petrol-based plastics to creating new plastics from cornstarch, Dr. Girois has become a recognized and well-published expert in his field.

Of course, the reality is even more complex. As you can imagine, most plastic products today are not just made of one plastic but a combination of several.The image here shows why, for example, milk and juice cartons are not recyclable in many local recycling programs. Separating layers is very costly.

Plastics are rarely pure in composition and always contain other chemical additives used to improve the transformation process and the performance. Additives content can vary from few percent to 80%. As it will be discussed in a later article, plastic diversity in type and composition is the main reason why it is difficult to recycle plastics efficiently.

In the next article, we’ll look into how plastics have transformed our world, making our daily life more affordable, safer, cleaner, and more fun.

Hurricane Irma As the anxiety brought by Hurricane Irma intensified, residents across South Florida gave a helping hand and helped their neighbors get ready for what was predicted to be a monster storm. Social media sites — including Facebook and Nextdoor — were flooded with posts from residents asking where they could find water, propane tanks, plywood, and batteries. Residents often responded quickly with locations or helpful tips on weathering the storm, helping each other in such a difficult time. Six million Floridians had lost power after monster storm Hurricane Irma hit the Florida Keys, scraping Miami and making landfall south of Hollywood near Marco Island as a Category 4 hurricane, with destructive storm surge

and strong winds. To help combat the heat and loss of power in our community, the City of Hollywood opened the doors to several community centers, providing much needed A/C and cold drinks to residents. The City also hosted pop-up BBQs in several locations, providing hot food to those without power. “This is what really makes a difference to our community” said longtime local, John L. Neighbors are helping neighbors in this time of need following Hurricane Irma. Making a full recovery from a storm as powerful as Hurricane Irma takes time. Restoring power, repairing damage, and cleaning up debris doesn’t happen overnight. What does tend to ensue in the aftermath of tragedy is kinship and camaraderie.

If you listened closely, chances are that you heard chainsaws no matter where you were in the South Florida area. For those residents who stayed, and those who returned to their homes, it’s an ominous scene. But windows are open, birds sing and fly into upturned trees, frogs croak at night in pools that have turned green, and you can even hear a few generators humming. Residents stated that they have been cleaning up and rebuilding day and night since the storm—neighbors helping neighbors and uniting to bring back our community. Recycling Perks is proud to serve the residents in Hollywood, FL, while building stronger partnerships with our local community businesses and residents. Reduce waste for the holidays

Ah…the Holiday season! Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s—so much to do! It’s a time that we look forward to…and dread. We may love the sights and sounds of the Season, the parties, food, gifts, and time with family and friends, but, we dread the clean-up and waste. So, how can we enjoy the Season while still reducing the amount of waste that we produce? Here are a few tips to help you make the most, and least, of this wonderful season.

Holiday parties and dinners 1. If you host a party, set the table with cloth napkins and reusable dishes, glasses, and silverware. Also save and reuse party hats, decorations, and favors. 2. Be sure your guests know where to properly dispose of and recycle their waste at your party. 3. After holiday festivities, put leftovers in recyclable containers, and share them with family, friends, or others. Donate untouched leftovers from parties to a local food bank or homeless shelter. 4. After parties, fill your dishwasher up completely before running it. You will run fewer cycles, which saves energy. 5. Buy ingredients for baking, cooking, etc., in bulk. Take your own reusable containers and stock up on holiday staples. With so much to buy, it makes sense to cut down on packaging waste for those things we need for the Holidays.

Gift-giving 1. When shopping, bring your own reusable bags for carrying your purchases, and try to buy items with minimal packaging and/or made with recycled content. 2. Wrap gifts in recycled or reused wrapping paper. Also remember to save or recycle your used wrapping paper. Give gifts that don’t require much packaging, such as concert tickets or gift certificates. For gifts like PJs, sweaters, etc., simply tie them with ribbon to create a festive (and colorful) gift that has almost NO packaging. 3. Make your own Christmas-themed cloth, draw-string bags for gift-giving. They can be used year after year, and become treasured family heirlooms for generations. 10

4. Send recycled-content greeting cards and remember to recycle any paper cards you receive. You can also try sending electronic greeting cards to reduce paper waste. 5. Make cookies or other goodies (or the ingredients for them), and package them in reusable and/or recyclable containers as gifts. Homemade goodies show how much you care and help you avoid packaging waste. 6. When gifting flowers, consider buying long-lasting silk flowers, potted plants, or live bushes, shrubs, or trees that can be planted in the Spring. 7. Give the gift of recycling! Encourage others to recycle by giving them their own recycling bin(s). Use them as “wrapping” for large gifts (don’t forget to attach a colorful bow). And give Recycling Perks rewards that the recipient is sure to love!

Holiday Decorating 1. Store loose holiday ornaments in Ziploc bags or plastic containers. 2. For unusually-shaped items, keep the original packaging for later storage. 3. Wrap small strands of lights around a clothes hanger. Not only will it prevent a tangled mess, you also have a built-in handle! Alternatively, wrap them around a piece of cardboard. 4. When the big day arrives, there’s no reason to not keep things a bit organized amidst the frenzy. Before Christmas morning, wrap a big box with wrapping paper (leaving the top open and the box empty). Place it near or under the tree. Now you have a pretty place (instead of the floor) to throw all the yards of wrapping paper that your kids will rip off their presents. 5. Holiday and seasonal wreaths are beautiful (and expensive), but can easily get crushed when stored. Many of us have a variety for Autumn, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Winter, and more, and store them when not in use. Wreath covers (preferably with handles), or wreath storage boxes or bins will protect your treasures for years. 6. Keep all your gift wrapping supplies in one place. Use a clear container that can be stored underneath a bed for out-of-the-way storage for year-round use. Remember to include scissors and tape. 7. Consider buying a potted tree that can be planted after the Holiday, or invest in a high quality artificial tree that will last for years to come. Alternatively, make your own tree from recycled/repurposed materials. Let your imagination go wild!
