Rolling up our Green sleeves! The Green Scheme
• Setting up community gardening tool hire scheme
Re-use
The Green Scheme is available to residents to apply for funding towards running a ‘green project’ in their community or scheme.
• Setting up a ‘Freecycle’ initiative where people donate good and furniture and give them away free to those that are willing to collect them
• Re-use carrier bags or buy and use your own bag each time you go shopping
• Running a second hand furniture project (maybe as a social enterprise)
• Re-use envelopes especially 'jiffy' bags with re-usable envelope labels
• Setting up of ‘awareness’ campaigns to promote going green, particularly with children.
• Re-use containers especially in the case of cleaning products which are refillable

Car clubs are all about using the car only when there is not a better option. However even on these journeys we can make an effort to reduce the environmental impact. By driving more efficiently (or 'eco driving') emissions and fuel consumption can be reduced by up to 25%.

• Take a packed lunch to work or school in a re-usable container

Volunteers from the Callon Kid’s Community Club (CKCC) will be having tea at Buckingham Palace in July in order to receive the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. This annual award gives recognition to the unsung heroes in our communities that play an essential role in our daily lives. “For CKCC to be recognised by Her Majesty the Queen is praise indeed,” said Colin Makinson, Vice Chair for CKCC and Community Warden for Contour Homes which owns and manages the Callon Estate. “This award is for everyone who has worked with the Club in the past and of course must be shared with the brilliant children of Callon.” Five years ago Callon was notorious, however since establishing Callon Kids Community Club there has been a significant turnaround in the estate’s fortunes. CKCC has played an important role in making what was once a no go area into a thriving and vibrant community where young people can grow and develop in a positive, safe and caring environment.

Over the Easter half term 16 members of the Callon Kids Community Club teamed up with Contour Homes staff and PCSO Sarah Harries for a graffiti clean up day on the Callon Estate.
Diane Cato, Housing Management Officer and Chris Kerins, Assistant Housing Officer recently partnered up with PCSO Dave Mason and PCSO Paul Shepherd from Morecambe Police to conduct a Street Surgery on Wiseman Close and Bartholomew Road, Morecambe.
Two teams split up in different directions with cleaning kits to tackle the grot spots. The day proved to be a big success and the kids enjoyed seeing how their hard work improved the appearance of where they live. Lamp posts, fences, telecom boxes and CCTV posts were all scrubbed clean.
The aim of the surgery was to discuss local issues such as antisocial behaviour and take a joint approach to tackling these. The event has helped to build relations with residents and their neighbourhood policing team. The event was very positive, advice was given and residents were reassured that any issues could be discussed in confidence and appropriate action would be taken.
All the children that took part were given some homemade cake kindly provided by a local resident followed by a trip to McDonalds!
Many residents commented that the increased presence on the estate was having an impact and things were very quiet. The issues recorded from the survey have been collated and this has been fed back to residents with an action plan outlining how the issues raised will be tackled.

We have had a lot of problems on the estate. At first it was adults behaving really badly, even fighting on the streets. "There's nothing like that now but we do have trouble with youths hanging around on the streets and intimidating people. "I really hope the cameras will tidy up these remaining problems. And, if anything does happen, we will have evidence."

Pictured on the right is the older of the duo, experienced Groundsman, Gary Lewis. Gary attended Heys Road School in Prestwich (now Prestwich Arts College) before becoming a Groundsman at, of all places, Old Trafford football ground.
Despite being a True Blue, he remained at Old Trafford for 10 years before becoming head Groundsman at Accrington Stanley (who are they?) Garry Button, lives in Whitefield with his parents. He attended St. Monica’s High School in Prestwich and became interested in gardening whilst working for his gardener uncle. With all that experience, the Rivers’ Estate should look quite fantastic in the not too distant future. Tenant Joan Lund said, “The new gardeners are really nice people. They are very friendly and helpful and have made a good job of the lawn in front of my cottage flat. In fact the whole Estate is looking so much better because of them.”

We have a ‘Menu of Opportunities’ that contains all the ways to ‘get involved` and ‘have your say’. Lovely Lolly Coolers Banana Ice Lollies
Purple Blackcurrant Lollies
Ingredients:
Ingredients:
• 2 or 3 bananas
• 200g blackcurrants
• lolly sticks (you can substitute cocktail sticks for older children)
• 100g caster sugar

1. Place the blackcurrants, sugar, lemon zest and juice in a pan with 75ml water. Heat gently, stirring until the sugar dissolves, then bring to the boil. Simmer gently for 5 minutes then allow to cool.

Perfect for all those wonderful long summer days that are coming.
