Contour Green Area

Rolling up our Green sleeves! The Green Scheme

• Setting up community gardening tool hire scheme

Re-use

The Green Scheme is available to residents to apply for funding towards running a ‘green project’ in their community or scheme.

• Setting up a ‘Freecycle’ initiative where people donate good and furniture and give them away free to those that are willing to collect them

• Re-use carrier bags or buy and use your own bag each time you go shopping

• Running a second hand furniture project (maybe as a social enterprise)

• Re-use envelopes especially 'jiffy' bags with re-usable envelope labels

• Setting up of ‘awareness’ campaigns to promote going green, particularly with children.

• Re-use containers especially in the case of cleaning products which are refillable

What kind of projects can I set up? Any green initiatives that help to improve your environment, save energy, set up or improve recycling in your area, reduce carbon imitations. Examples of projects that we could fund under this scheme: • Cleaning up a neglected area on your estate – removing rubbish and providing plants.

The cash amount awarded will depend on your idea, so just have a go!! If you are interested please contact the Resident Involvement Team at Contour Homes.

• Setting up a recycling scheme, bins, composting bins, wormeries

• Tel: 0845 602 1120

• Creating an area that encourage wildlife • Tree and shrub planting

• E:mail: resident.involvement@contourhousing.co.uk • Download an application from the Contour Homes website under the Resident Involvement section www.contourhousing.co.uk • In writing – Freepost RPAU-JBLE-CUJX, Quay Plaza 2, 1st Floor – Lowry Mall, Salford Quays, Salford, M50 3AH

Top Tips for Recycling Every one of us can make a difference in our daily lives. As well as using environmentally responsible eco-products around the house and garden try the following to make all those things that have been produced last longer.

Reduce

• Compost vegetable peelings, cut flowers, shredded newspaper, and grass cuttings

2. Because the engine is cold, journeys of less than 2 miles pollute by up to 60% more per mile than a hot engine.

• Take unwanted clothes, shoes, books and eyewear to charity shops • Recycle any laser/Ink printer cartridges - visit www.cartridges4charity.co.uk • Take aluminium foil, old phone books, glass bottles and jam jars to your local recycling point

Buying Recycled Products • Look for products made from 100% Post Consumer Waster Paper or with a high content of recycled post consumer waste paper • Use bin liners made with high recycled content • Cat litter made from paper or sawdust

4

CONTOUR HOMES

iNSIDE

Top ten suggestions:

Recycle

• Instead buy food products 'loose' and re-use any plastic bags

• Donate magazines to waiting rooms at your hairdressers or dentist

Car clubs are all about using the car only when there is not a better option. However even on these journeys we can make an effort to reduce the environmental impact. By driving more efficiently (or 'eco driving') emissions and fuel consumption can be reduced by up to 25%.

1. Drive off straight away rather than leaving the engine idling to warm up.

• Avoid buying unnecessary or overly packaged goods

• Take a packed lunch to work or school in a re-usable container

Car Club

• Use a non-peat soil which contains composted waste such as straw and coir(coconut)

3. Minimum emissions occur between 40-60 miles per hour and increase with higher speeds. 4. Regular maintenance such as keeping the engine tuned will reduce emissions. 5. Restarting the engine uses less energy than 10 seconds of idling, so switch off if in a long queue. 6. Inflating tyres to the correct pressure will lengthen their life, make the car safer and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 5%. 7. Don't carry unnecessary loads in the boot or on the roof as this will increase fuel consumption. 8. Hard acceleration, sharp breaking and aggressive driving all use more fuel as well as being more dangerous. 9. 40% of UK trips are less than 3 miles, and catalytic converters take at least 6 miles to become effective. 10. Planning your journey will reduce unnecessary mileage due to getting lost, stuck in traffic or road works. Try to link together necessary car journeys rather than making many small trips.

The Queens Award

Callon Vo lunteers Party at the Palace

Volunteers from the Callon Kid’s Community Club (CKCC) will be having tea at Buckingham Palace in July in order to receive the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. This annual award gives recognition to the unsung heroes in our communities that play an essential role in our daily lives. “For CKCC to be recognised by Her Majesty the Queen is praise indeed,” said Colin Makinson, Vice Chair for CKCC and Community Warden for Contour Homes which owns and manages the Callon Estate. “This award is for everyone who has worked with the Club in the past and of course must be shared with the brilliant children of Callon.” Five years ago Callon was notorious, however since establishing Callon Kids Community Club there has been a significant turnaround in the estate’s fortunes. AvenQuest

management group)

• Sports Development carried out various activities for children and youths in the area, with over 45 people attending the climbing tower session. • Hope08, a church led volunteer group provided 25 volunteers each day to litter pick the areas and also ran counselling sessions for parenting and debt management • Police Community Support Officers conducted crime prevention surveys across the area and Preston employment partnership ran various drop in sessions.

Save Money on Electricity Bills Do you live in an AvenQuest Home? Do you have a personal computer? Do you receive benefits? You could receive a Power Down Plug free of charge. The energy saving plug could save an estimated £200 off your energy bill every year. Simply plug the computer, printer etc into the device and when the computer is turned off it will sense the drop in current and power down the rest of the sockets. The plug has built in surge protection and will save money on electricity bills. If your interested call into the AvenQuest Reception and find out more from a member of staff.

Hudson Street Clean Up Day As well as various agencies joining forces with AvenQuest Caretakers to tackle the Hudson Street Site, many local residents joined in the clean up. Several skips were filled and the site had a full clean up.

Morecambe Street Surgery tackles ASB

Over the Easter half term 16 members of the Callon Kids Community Club teamed up with Contour Homes staff and PCSO Sarah Harries for a graffiti clean up day on the Callon Estate.

Diane Cato, Housing Management Officer and Chris Kerins, Assistant Housing Officer recently partnered up with PCSO Dave Mason and PCSO Paul Shepherd from Morecambe Police to conduct a Street Surgery on Wiseman Close and Bartholomew Road, Morecambe.

Two teams split up in different directions with cleaning kits to tackle the grot spots. The day proved to be a big success and the kids enjoyed seeing how their hard work improved the appearance of where they live. Lamp posts, fences, telecom boxes and CCTV posts were all scrubbed clean.

The aim of the surgery was to discuss local issues such as antisocial behaviour and take a joint approach to tackling these. The event has helped to build relations with residents and their neighbourhood policing team. The event was very positive, advice was given and residents were reassured that any issues could be discussed in confidence and appropriate action would be taken.

All the children that took part were given some homemade cake kindly provided by a local resident followed by a trip to McDonalds!

Many residents commented that the increased presence on the estate was having an impact and things were very quiet. The issues recorded from the survey have been collated and this has been fed back to residents with an action plan outlining how the issues raised will be tackled.

Well done and thank you to the Callon Kids Community Club.

A Week Filled With Respect The Kingsfold area of Penwortham was the focus of a range of events and activities delivered by South Ribble Community Safety Partnership and other local agencies to encourage local people to take pride in their area. Kathy Gilfillan, Chairman of the Residents' Association said: "We're really pleased the cameras have finally arrived. They are the culmination of a lot of hard work and lobbying. We have had a lot of problems on the estate. At first it was adults behaving really badly, even fighting on the streets. Greenfingers signs on two true blues

Rivers In Flood

Rivers, Bury & Blackburn

12 homes in Oak Lane on the Rivers Estate in Whitefield were rudely awakened in the early hours of Wednesday 14th May when a burst water main in nearby Mersey Drive led to their homes, gardens and cars being submerged in 3 feet of water.

18

The water was pouring from a fractured underground main which caused the road in Mersey Drive to collapse and the appearance of a six foot deep hole which spanned almost the width of the road. Rivers and Contour staff have been well praised by residents in helping ensure everyone was kept up to date with information and helped with rehousing or insurance information as needed. Thanks to St.

Andrew’s church which was used as a central base for residents and all organisations involved. One official from United Utilities, who have accepted liability for the fault, said that this was the worst burst they had encountered in 25 years.

Keen Manchester City supporters, Garry Button and Gary Lewis are the two new ground maintenance lads employed by Greenfingers Landscape Limited to look after the communal lawns and gardens on the Rivers Estate. They started work on the Estate at the beginning of May and have made an instant impact with their friendliness and the quality of their work and helpfulness. Pictured on the right is the older of the duo, experienced Groundsman, Gary Lewis. Gary attended Heys Road School in Prestwich (now Prestwich Arts College) before becoming a Groundsman at, of all places, Old Trafford football ground.

Despite being a True Blue, he remained at Old Trafford for 10 years before becoming head Groundsman at Accrington Stanley (who are they?) Garry Button, lives in Whitefield with his parents. He attended St. Monica’s High School in Prestwich and became interested in gardening whilst working for his gardener uncle. With all that experience, the Rivers’ Estate should look quite fantastic in the not too distant future. Tenant Joan Lund said, “The new gardeners are really nice people. They are very friendly and helpful and have made a good job of the lawn in front of my cottage flat. In fact the whole Estate is looking so much better because of them.”

New tiles, facia boards and gutters have already been fitted to many properties on the Estate, making them look instantly better for many years to come. Rivers Area Manager Ann Walton said, “We are extremely pleased that we have been able to carry out these visual improvements to our properties. The uPVC facia boards will also save us money in the long term due to its low maintenance needs”. She continued, ”I must thank those members of

Lovely Lolly Coolers Banana Ice Lollies

Purple Blackcurrant Lollies

Ingredients:

Ingredients:

• 2 or 3 bananas

• 200g blackcurrants

• lolly sticks (you can substitute cocktail sticks for older children)

• 100g caster sugar

• optional coverings:

Method:

• melted chocolate or maple syrup

1. Place the blackcurrants, sugar, lemon zest and juice in a pan with 75ml water. Heat gently, stirring until the sugar dissolves, then bring to the boil. Simmer gently for 5 minutes then allow to cool.

• dried coconut • chopped nuts • sesame seeds • vermicelli (hundreds and thousands - some brands are vegan) Method: Cut the bananas into bite size chunks and push the lolly sticks into them. Place in the freezer on a covered freezer proof dish for a couple of hours or until frozen. They are delicious just like that but if you prefer a bit of decadence: dip each lolly in chocolate or syrup (be quick - it sets quite fast!) and then into dry ingredients of your choice (chopped nuts are our favourite). Perfect for all those wonderful long summer days that are coming.

• Grated zest and juice of 1 unwaxed lemon

2. Purée the mixture with a hand-held electric blender until smooth (or tip into a blender to liquidise). Stir in 300ml chilled water. Tip the mixture into a jug then pour into lolly moulds and freeze for at least 4 hours, until solid.
