EUROPE READR SERBIA

Damjan Bergant, ambasador Slovenije u Beogradu

Europe Readr is Slovenia’s largest cultural project during the Slovenian presidency of the EU Council. Europe Radr created a worldwide digital platform with free access to 27 books by European authors. The Embassy of Slovenia and University of Belgrade - Faculty of Architecture with the help of creative students of architecture upgraded the project to promote reading among Serbian people. The result is a mobile pavilion where in addition to digital access printed books will be available for all book lovers and those that will be encouraged to become one. It is not a question of digital or a hard copy the future is in reading. Damjan Bergant, Ambassador of Slovenia in Belgrade

Europe Readr spatial installation calls for dialogue and engagement in public space and active citizenship through culture. What is interesting is the initiative to unite the institution of reading, which is very important for both students and the general population, with the creative vigour of students and design institutions in order to realize a pavilion that will intrigue visitors to approach the book, both analogue and digital. The pavilion initiates a rapprochement with the book in a relaxed atmosphere and engages public space as a place of debate and exchange, which has been essential since time immemorial. I want to invite visitors to participate in the viewing, consumption and interpretation of this pavilion, which in a way wants to be both modest and provocative at the same time. Dr Vladan Djokic, Dean of the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture

U tom smislu, katalog prezentuje proces razvoja arhitektonskog rešenja mobilnog paviljona / prostorne instalacije kroz različite faze i

The mobile pavilion has been developed within the international project EUROPE READR, realized through the cooperation between the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Belgrade and the Laboratory for urban morphology and typology (Morpho-Lab) of the University of Belgrade – School of Architecture. The project aims to encourage the culture of reading and critical thinking about society in the future and start a public debate on European values, sustainability, and the European Green Deal through designing public spaces for the exchange of ideas and values. Numerous activities based on cooperation and creativity serve the purpose of promoting European values and inspiring intercultural dialogue. With the intention to establish a link between the project’s original concept – to affirm the culture of reading – and the creative activities of young people who will be shaping and using public urban spaces in the future, institutions of higher education and students of architecture from all over the

Vodeći doprinos ovog projekta jeste njegova multidisciplinarnost, kako u procesu studentskog učenja, tako i u procesu same realizacije.

world have been engaged, as the leaders of innovation and the spatial articulation of the project’s idea. In this sense, the catalogue presents the development process of the architectural design solution for the mobile pavilion / spatial installation with its various phases and activities, from the student competition and student workshop to the final selection and development of the construction design, realized within the Morpho Lab of the University of Belgrade – School of Architecture. The multidisciplinary character of the project represents its chief contribution, both in the process of students’ learning and in the process of project realization. We especially want to highlight the fact that architecture and art students from different faculties, through extracurricular activities, took an active part at various stages of the process of designing and constructing the pavilion. The student competition for the conceptual design of the pavilion / spatial installation, held in March of 2021, marked the first phase of cooperation. Seventeen teams made up of 39 students from 4 institutions of higher education participated in the competition. The jury decided unanimously to award three equal prizes to the teams invited to participate in the second phase. The rewarded projects showed the highest potential for development from the aspects of program and function and most directly promoted the ideas implied in the European Readr project. In this phase, the authors of the rewarded design solutions had the opportunity to, in a student workshop realized at the Belgrade University School of Architecture, together with a mentoring team of teachers and associates, develop their solutions through an active exchange of experiences, knowledge, and ideas. It was a great pleasure to engage in these activities in an atmosphere of creative

Morpho-Lab tim

influx and energy. After the workshop was realized, we found the selection of the design solution for construction highly challenging, as the pavilion had to meet the conditions of flexibility, multifunctionality, and economy, and also had to have the option to be assembled and disassembled. All the solutions proved successful regarding some of the required characteristics, but the chosen pavilion MONO, in addition to all these features, offered a solution that symbolically refers to an open book. With its different dispositions of individual elements, the MONO pavilion allows creating a multitude of spatial scenarios and, thus, has the potential to be used for cultural promotion on future occasions. Due to its specific spatial and programmatic character, the pavilion has significant potential to initiate and stimulate dialogue, the exchange of opinions and values, and also, by joining innovation, research, and creativity, indicate the importance of multidisciplinarity. Bearing in mind that European cultural and creative sectors provide crucial contributions to social cohesion, the focus was on activating public urban space as a medium for a structured dialogue covering a whole range of questions about the development of reading culture and literary practices. The brilliant force and energy of all participants engaged in this creative experiment aimed at contributing to the establishment of a reading audience, the development of a platform for exchanging ideas, and the introduction of a new view into the future of contemporary urban living. Horizontalni i vertikalni korpusi ramova zajedno prave međuprostore u kojima svaki korisnik nalazi mikroprostor za kratak predah i uvid u izdvojeni sadržaj.

Milica P. Milojević i Nataša Radenović

A PAVILION FOR THE PROMOTION OF READING CULTURE (BELGRADE) The initial idea for the pavilion as a monumental structure in a public space, whose form resembles two open books, receives a layered interpretation of the reading culture through the project development. Let’s start with what we are reading – a text? A picture? A drawing? In an analogue or digital format? What kind of a spot are we looking for to read? Who can read, and who has difficulty reading? This pavilion is a hospitable place, comfortable for every user. It invites us to play, research, discover – develop a reading culture. The content of the pavilion includes analogue and digital book formats placed on shelves and in transparent boxes, which are hidden in the cavities of wooden frames. The wooden frames are brightly coloured, grouped into horizontal and vertical segments. These segments of frames make up the space of the pavilion. The pavilion has no roof, is open on all sides, and can be decomposed and adjusted to the setting in open and closed public spaces. The gaps between the frames grouped in segments invite us to peek into the shelves, to start searching the treasury of books concealed on the shelves and in the boxes. Horizontal and vertical frame segments together create interspaces in which each user can find a microspace for a short break and an insight into the separated content. The distance between the frames and the vertical segments allows uninterrupted visual contact

through the pavilion, contributing to framing in the immediate vicinity without disturbing the existing views, which are important for perceiving the square and the buildings that surround it. Thus, the pavilion is at the same time a place of live exchange and meeting with a book and a spot of solitude with a good novel, comic, or colouring book. The weightlessness achieved with standard frames, the adaptability of individual segments that can be used to create different spatial compositions, and the striking colours bringing joy to the entire structure are the major values of the Pavilion in Belgrade, which is an ephemeral object, unobtrusive and intriguing.

ABOUT THE PROCESS Within this phase (April-May 2021), a more detailed elaboration of conceptual solutions towards technical projects for implementation in terms of program, materialization and applied systems and technologies was performed. The aim of the second phase was to prepare documentation for the realization of the pavilion through preliminary optimization of spatial capacities, technical and structural requirements and formal design of the selected pavilions through the final selection of structural elements, micro locations and materialization. Also, through joint work and research, the flexibility of the spatial structures and their modularity in relation to the expected changes conditioned by the use of the pavilion (multifunctional structure), its possible relocation (mobile and assembly-disassembly structure) as well as technology of use and construction (use of locally available, sustainable materials). Three workshops were held at the University of Belgrade - Faculty of Architecture, during which members of selected teams worked jointly with MorphoLab members (Associate professor dr Ana Nikezić, Assistant professors - dr Milica Milojević, dr Jelena Ristić Trajković, dr Verica Krsić, Teaching Assistants - dr Aleksandra Đorđević, Miloš Kostić, dr Mladen Pešić and Research Associate Aleksandra Milovanović). Through a series of iterations and testings as part of the joint work in workshops, selected design solutions were upgraded, optimized and prepared for the final presentation held on 17 May 2021 in the presence of students, representatives of the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia and the teachers from the Faculty of Architecture .

Jury explanation: The project offers a system solution consisting of unit modules whose connection, multiplication and rotation can produce different spatial structures of open and closed type. In that sense, the solution can be integrated into different spatial frameworks by adjusting the spatial relationships of unit modules, which opens the possibility of choosing a place to read - in a sheltered, hunted space for an individual or in an exposed space facing passers-by for reading in society. The great potential of the solution is reflected in the application in different locations, and the possibility for the pavilion to gather users in different time intervals at the level of the day.

Jury explanation: The concept is based on a monumental unit element of spatial installation, which, thanks to its simple geometry and proportions, enables the creation of different spatial-program scenarios depending on the disposition of unit modules. The monumentality achieved by the dimensions of the monolithic slabs is in the function of defining the place that promotes the reading culture and gives a striking feature in the urban space. The use of a typical element whose disposition and materialization builds a space that invites play, comfortable sitting or work has the potential to apply primarily digital technologies in promoting reading culture, which is why the Jury singles out this solution for further elaboration.

Treća faza je u fokusu imala tehničke aspekte razrade i finalizacije paviljona kroz proveru statičke stabilnosti same strukture, selekciju materijala i testiranje kolorita, promišljanje tehničkih detalja i izradu radioničkih i tehničkih crteža. U ovoj fazi su se autoru pored pored članova fakulteta priključili i student druge godine Master akademsih studija Arhitektonskog fakulteta Dunja Dedić i Nenad Pavlov

ABOUT THE PROCESS The third phase included the elaboration of the selected conceptual project (author - Natasa Radenovic) down to the contractor’s details, as well as the construction and realization of the pavilion. Within this phase, the design itself was further improved through technical and technological elaboration, which had an impact on the modification of the form of the structure, which in the final iteration was defined as a spatial installation / pavilion composed of a series of mobile elements that that form a whole and enable mutual interaction of its parts. The basic structural element is a wooden frame (dimensions280x40x60cm), which multiplication is forming box like element that become the basic formal units of the pavilion. Subsequent rotation of these elements in the horizontal and vertical plane creates new spatial assemblies and ambiences that can be adapted to different contexts, spatial capacities and needs of users in public spaces. The elaboration took into account the static stability, durability of the material and its color, as well as the possibility of later use of individual parts of the pavilion for the needs of another space or event. The third phase focused on the technical aspects of the development and finalization of the pavilion through checking the static stability of the structure itself, material selection and color testing, consideration of technical details and production of workshop and technical drawings. In this phase, in addition to the members of the faculty, the author was joined by students of the Second year of Master Academic Studies of the Faculty of Architecture, Dunja Dedić and Nenad Pavlović.
