BEOGRAD 2020.
INITIATIVE: The negative consequences of the global pandemic COVID-19 were recognized as the occasion for the initiative in the form od the online student workshop. Throughout history, the global society faced various crises, which had negative consequences for society, politics, and the economy. Some of these negative consequences are still to be felt even today. Global crises such as economic, climate change and global warming, poverty, terrorism, have a continuous and longer course of negative impacts, and their consequences are timely perceived. There are already globally established strategies for overcoming or mitigating them. However, the specificity of the current COVID-19 crisis is manifested in a much shorter time frame, which makes the consequences immediately visible. Therefore a rapid response regarding professional action is needed to reduce the risk of spreading the virus. On the other hand, such specific crises, which can often be unpredictable, show the lack of an adequate spatial-programming framework for the prevention and suppression of the pandemic spread, or mitigation of its consequences. In this sense, the practical and theoretical research of the appropriate responses during the emergency is one of the leading challenges in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Creating new spatial and programming scenarios that will enable the daily activities to be carried out safely and effectively is a fundamental task of professionals in the field of architecture and urbanism. Recognizing these aspects and challenges, the University of Belgrade - Faculty of Architecture has initiated and conducted an online student workshop, Challenges of COVID-19: A Pandemic Architecture focused on the search for new, innovative typologies and architectural scenarios. The main aim of the workshop is to form the platform for the creation of spatial and programmatic solutions in order to reduce the further risks of spreading the virus. The workshop was organized from April 13th to April 27th, 2020, and the participants were the students of different levels of study and study programms from the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade and the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Novi Sad.
REALIZACIJA:
REALISATION:
The workshop was organized in 4 phases conducted with the help of Microsoft Teams application, used as a digital framework for communication between students, tutors and critics. The initial phase of the workshop was held on April 13 in the form of an Introductory Presentation, in which tutors, teaching assistants and researchers from the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade presented the topic and expected results of the workshop to the students. Following recognized research and design perspectives related to COVID-19 challenges, on April 20, students presented ideograms of initial visions through PechaKucha presentation. A total of 98 undergraduate, single-cycle5-year integrated, master, and doctoral students, divided into 29 groups, presented the initial research questions and identified problems that could be addressed through further research and design during the workshop. Based on the complementarity of certain aspects, the spatial level of activity and the programmatic orientation of the ideas, the student groups were divided into six thematic frameworks, within which further work continued. Aside from the students and tutors, teachers of the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade also participated in each thematic framework as critics. The third phase of the workshop was realized on April 25th and 26th, with the main focus on the development of conceptual designs and studies through open discussions of students, tutors, and critics in all six thematic frameworks. The fourth phase of the workshop involved students' independent work on finalizing conceptual designs and studies, following the recommendations of the assigned critics and tutors. This three-day action resulted in the creation of 29 conceptual designs and studies in six thematic frameworks: (1) Improvement of Functional Performance of Space, (2) Alternative Modes of Space-use, (3) Urban Equipment and Public Spaces, (4) Design of Protective Equipment - Prototypes, (5) Altered Everyday Life, and (6) Models of Accommodation for the Most Vulnerable Groups. Kako će izgledati novi režimi kretanja i funkcionisanja susedstva, kvartova i gradova generalno?
PROSTORNA DISTANCIRANOST
10
Centralno istraživačko pitanje u arhitektonskom diskursu se ogleda u preispitivanju prostorne distanciranosti – odnosno preispitivanje relacije prostorne distanciranosti i društvene solidarnosti i usklađivanja prostornih i socioloških nivoa.
RESEARCH PERSPECTIVES NEW NORMALITY The changed circumstances in the state of emergency have led each individual to recognize specific needs and problems in relation to entirely new living conditions. This is reflected firstly in the formation of alternative modes of daily life, work, and leisure, as well as in the transformation of the functional regimes of certain spaces or spatial units into entirely new scenarios of space use, which raises the question of the new normality in a broader sense. What will it look like and how will the everyday life take place during and after the pandemic? Which of the current emergency measures will become legal measures in our lives, or even rules? What impact will it have on the built environment and the whole discipline? What will be the new modes of mobility and functioning of neighborhoods and cities in general? PANDEMIC REALITY Previous experiences traced during the outbreak of major epidemics that have brought similar changes, such as cholera, tuberculosis and typhoid, raised question of the relationship between the pandemic and architecture, or the conceptual framework of pandemic architecture, which is the subject of the workshop. The professional field of architecture and urbanism has become a ground for numerous concepts such as healing cities, health architecture, resilient cities, etc. During the 19th century, specific mechanisms from planning and urban design were used to deal with these situations, while during the 20th century, architects of modernism recognized their objects as a cure, as a place of hygiene and cleanliness in the city. Today, the central research question concerns the transformation of cities and their adaptation towhat we might call a pandemic reality, in which everything is primarily directed towards (a) establishing public health in the community and (b) considering alternative scenarios for the accommodation of a large number of the infected people while maintaining the normal functioning of the city and daily life of other residents. SPATIAL DISTANCE The central research question in architectural discourse is reflected in the re-examination
of the spatial distance - the relation between spatial distancing and social solidarity and the harmonization of spatial and sociological levels. These themes were brought into the field of architecture from similar discursive studies of space, such as spatial cognition and psychological perception of the environment, and were used by many architectural theorists to develop the concepts that define levels of spatial distance and operationalize them into design strategies. On these bases, questions are being raised today regarding the new relationship with nature and environment, innovative equipment and techniques and their influence on defining new anthropometric, ergonomic and dimensional aspects.

It seems like the very essence of consumerist society is turned upside down. The conveyor belt of the everyday life gets a new representational dimension – a crutch, a prosthesis, a scaffolding, or a scene for a different life.

A significant topic of the need for a change in modes of communication in public facilities due to the requirement for spatial distancing at the time of the pandemic was identified. An interesting concept of an exoskeleton and newly designed multifunctional module offers a solution for linear movement, avoiding cross-communication and reducing contacts and encounters when using public space, offering a new pandemic aesthetic and urban space identity.

Entrance to an apartment as a contact between semi-public and private space is of particular importance in relation to the requirements for enhanced hygiene in pandemic conditions. New modes of behaviour when entering the apartment in these conditions inspired the exploration of new materials and elements in space. The newly designed element in addition to the functional, offers very exciting ambient features and potentials.

Kakva je priroda transformacije arhitektonskih objekata i urbanih prostora usled mera distanciranja, promenjenih relacija ličnog i zajedničkog prostora, i kulturološki usvojenih obrazaca ponašanja? What are the critical spatial implications of the socio-spatial distancing requirements in the time of the pandemic, and how can architecture and urbanism contribute to generating solutions and improving living conditions under these circumstances? What is the nature of the transformation of architectural buildings and urban spaces faced with new measures of distance, altered relationships between personal and collective space, and culturally adopted patterns of behavior? This project aims to provide answers to the question of how a pandemic can alter the understanding and change the spatial-programming concepts of urban and architectural space.

The project questions the impact of a new pandemic and post-pandemic life and work styles on the performativity of living space through various aspects: the relationship between personal and common space, the zoning and equipment of living space, the quality of the living environment for the plane functioning and interaction of different categories of users when performing work and education activities from home, new spatial concepts for new life/work patterns, etc. The topic is very relevant regarding the emerging needs for intensive use of information and telecommunications technologies and the impact of these circumstances on everyday life, ambiance features, spatial-programming patterns, and the ability of housing space to respond to new needs. Accepting these patterns as a part of “new normality” will undoubtedly have an impact on future concepts of architectural design in housing.

In the extreme circumstances of everyday life, forthcoming lifestyles are immeasurably imprinted in architecture, reminding us of the seductive play of the dialectic of spatial and social practices, which are continuously and repeatedly encountered through the architecture of built and lived space.
The project explores the potential of architecture to respond to changing modes of urban life in a state of a pandemic. A unique contribution is made by examining the possibility of simultaneously integrating different aspects of problem-solving and improving the performance of residential buildings (new modes of delivery, health and biophilia) through a layered membrane that, in addition to functional, enables the improvement of environmental and social performances of buildings.

The market is one of the places where contacts between seller and buyer are direct and often personal. Having a man at the market means trusting the quality of his products and nurturing that acquaintance with regular supply. Therefore, even in the context of the COVID19 pandemic based on that acquaintance and trust, direct supply based on personal trust continued on its initiative. In that way, sellers “are keeping” their customers, and buyers continue to rely on good experiences. So, in the city of Belgrade these days, for many citizens, the market functions outside the market facility.
Racionalno, pažljivo osmišljenim strategijama pregrupisavanja, modifikacija, i prilagođavanja trenutnim, vanrednim uslovima korišćenja pijace, u radu se ispituje fleksibilnost postojećih prostora i društvenih praksi i mogućnost „elastičnih“ promena. Besides focusing on places of vital importance for life in the city – the city markets, the quality of this work lies in the approach of spatial “reorganization”. Rationally and carefully designed through strategies of regrouping, modifying, and adapting to current, extraordinary conditions for the performance of markets, the project examines the flexibility of existing spaces and social practices and the possibility of “resilient” changes. The parameters of the currently recommended “measures of protection” are the starting point for rethinking the problem of “social distance” in places of the most intense social contact.
In the synthesis of the spatial-functional market reorganization and providing support for buyers and sellers through current and up-to-date information, an intervention that addresses the practical issues of the market life was designed engagingly referring to its background - the survival of the manufacturer and finding ways for the buyer to arrive safely to the product.

An ad-hoc solution that stays in the domain of space reorganization while maintaining supply at the desired level. Repacking and regrouping of shelves and items are regular activities of market managers. The critical thinking and alternative way of space-use haven’t been employed to the degree that extreme circumstances allow. Therefore, the challenges of the architectural profession remain unnoticed.
Would a further, more studious work on dimensional coordination, which was a starting point for thinking about new conditions of use of existing spaces, with comparative analysis of different typologies, open a broader and more complex field of engagement of architects, in radically altered conditions of everyday life?
Another work that raises an instrumental and relevant issue of improving safety and efficiency in the daily supply of groceries, while clearly demonstrating that the task of architects should be sought in the domain of a more thorough rethinking of the typology of hypermarkets rather than its internal reorganization. It seems that in this situation, which is new for all of us, semi-prefabricated facilities for efficient cash flow are crying out for at least partial disassembly and re-assembly - the content and form of social relationships.

The availability of health care in a state of a pandemic is further hampered or interdicted to residents in different parts of Serbia. The need to provide assistance to an already collapsed health care system is evident. This work examines the possibility of a systematic approach sensitive to local conditions. The solution of a Pop-up infirmary utilizes a prefabricated, growing, flexible, and mobile system installed in the public space. The effect of the Pop-up infirmary is not only perceivable in the availability of assistance to the population, but as well in providing first aid to local health care facilities.
dr Milica Milojević
Rad polazi od veoma konkretnog i aktuelnog problema, neravnomerne distribucije medicinskih ustanova i usluga, i predlaže konkretan i kompleksan odgovor arhitektonskim sredstvima: projekat sistema mobilnih i fleksibilnih jedinica, pop-ap ambulanti. The project starts from a very particular and relevant problem - an uneven distribution of medical facilities and services while proposing a specific and complex response trough architectural means: a system of mobile and flexible units, popup infirmaries. The question that arises is how could further elaboration, with the participation of experts from other fields, or the setting of a topic as an interdisciplinary task, contribute to its essential foundation in the new reality?
The project also responds to the recognized problem that in the conditions of a pandemic “live from the spot” in different environments changes day by day. Therefore, the need for a more intensive reaction of the health system in acute emerging hotspots arises. The system is conceptualized as adaptable and potentially growing. It would be useful to elaborate it through further optimization of element design, production and transportation.

Project that reminds us that in our society during the pandemic, there is empathy for the other, the one who is endangered more than me. Compassion is not helpful if it is not engaged, as the assistance provided is not sufficient if the cycle of poverty is not put to an end. The proposed intention oscillates between the noble desire to provide protection for marginal groups in time of a pandemic and the opposite tendency to localize these groups only in order to protect the dominant population.
The project clearly recognizes the importance and necessity of social solidarity initiatives as a vital response to opening and deepening the existential problems of a large population in the state of pandemic. The question that arises is to what extent does the proposed adaptation of open air parking garage provide adequate conditions for activities related to the donation and redistribution of food, clothing, and hygiene products? Designed as an “emergency intervention” which does not go deeper into the character of social relations regulated by the spatial organization, this proposal makes the problems, not so much solvable, as visible.
The idea of using the capacity of prefabricated public garages as a space to collect and distribute assistance in a state of a pandemic is a valuable initiative that activates public spaces for the realization of necessary humanitarian actions. The very design on the level of spatial-programming should intensively include topics of comfort, efficiency, accessibility, and adaptability of the system to the users’ needs – members of vulnerable groups, volunteers, and donors as well.

“Like on an assembly line” is a term that describes the efficient, serial, mass production of objects, optimized, calculated, in the standard. At airports, conveyors give acceleration to passengers who are in a hurry to master long-distance terminals in a short time. As a passive object, a person on the market lane is unaffected by the speed of their movement or retention, without the ability to return or getting off the conveyor, isolated “for his own good.” Just as selected goods are handled at the checkout counter, and a border is placed between the products of two customers, a person is here placed on a lane separated from the “dangerous” neighbor, passive and bound in the unbearable ease of shopping in a state of a pandemic.
The starting assumption that through alternative use of well-known technical solutions, the everyday necessity of goods supply in big cities can be made faster and more efficient, has been brought to the absurd. The project points to the pitfalls behind limited design goals and the lack of a broader picture of existing social opportunities that are in Krleža’s words “rather indecent”.
The question is whether it is possible to change the starting point, to “invert” the system, to “turn upside down” the architectural typology of the buildings on which intervention is made, and to use the technology in a way that works for us, but yet in a way that leaves out our presence as well. With such ambitious investments in automation, we would rather wait for the delivery of goods somewhere in the greenery and on the fresh air, perhaps on a green roof above this tirelessly employed machine.

Recognizing and underlining the term of SOCIAL DISTANCE and the psychological consequences that occur in the form of feelings of alienation, loss of motivation, monotony, lack of interaction and loneliness, is the starting point for exploring the possibilities of reducing the effects that will only be felt and studied after the pandemic which have caught us. Izuzetno zanimljiv i značajan koncept budućih održivih gradova. A solution that allows you to be with yourself and with nature in every situation, yet together and interactively as a whole.
Being outdoors, as one of the fundamental physical and mental needs of a human, has been further enhanced at a time that requires us to self-isolate and physically distance ourselves from others. Recognizing the potential of open spaces adjacent to and on the water surface, as well as the possibility to be safe and stay in an places that have a beneficial effect on humans, with an intervention that changes the current potentials and the way of using the coast, positively contributes to the easier and more humane overcoming of the circumstances in which we are.

Koncept i dizajn daju mogućnost dugoročne upotrebljivosti i u „redovnim“ uslovima bez dodatnih intervencija. Although created to meet the need for “movement, sun, and fresh air” in a state of a pandemic, the proposed solution offers a subtle affirmation of the otherwise unused and mostly useless space of “urban fissures”, which is an extreme value of this work. The concept and design give the possibility of long-term usability even in “regular” conditions without additional interventions.
A simple solution yet rich in its content and multi-practical dimension. Hovering and swinging as a position of return to the “inner child” and a place from which everything is possible, from which even “useless” city spaces are transformed into areas of shared inner adventure.
Neglected and ill-considered spaces, whose possibilities are recognized at an occasion when there is more time to ask questions, are an endless inspiration that needs to be used purposefully. Suggested solutions use the need for relaxation in its simplest way – by swinging. In that way, problematic positions are transformed into new urban markers that, with minimal investment, can provide very much, while the benefits during and after a state of a pandemic become invaluable.

“Our little can be a lot to those who have nothing” - remarked by Dusko Radovic, but also by a group of students who felt that with a relatively small intervention, we could make a significant qualitative shift in the limited living space. The proposed solution, albeit of a modest space, provides users with the valuable opportunity to stay outdoors in the face of numerous constraints that threaten both mind and body at a moment’s notice, providing something that is at that moment immensely valuable, desirable, comfortable, cosy and healthy.

Kapacitet projekta oslikan je kroz definisanje industrijskog proizvoda koji nudi brzo i jednostavno rešenje ekstenzije stambenog prostora u vidu lakomontažne terase. The capacity of the project is reflected in the definition of an industrial product that offers a quick and easy solution of the living space extensions in the form of a quickly assembled terrace. Parasitterrace achieves uniqueness through aspects of possible serial production, compact packaging, and therefore simplified transport setup (delivery), and individual installation by the end-user.

It can be said that the issue of adaptability to altered circumstances occupies a key place in this project. Accordingly, the focus of this solution is to examine the ability of an individual to respond quickly (timely) and independently (DIY) in relation to their personal space of residence. This solution should be considered as an product design which can be used to upgrade a window, and thus improve the living space.

Since we are forced to spend the time in the apartment that we would otherwise spend outside in the fresh air, in the park or nature, for a moment, we begin to perceive our home as a cage in which we are locked up against our will. The attempt to make a “cage” a “pot”, a new spatial framework that will allow us to soak up some sun, to still “flourish” and to spend part of our daily routine in direct contact with our environment, has resulted in a concept that could be further developed into new design strategies appropriate to revised housing limits.

Intervencija daje mogućnost formiranja ekstenzije unutrašnjeg prostora u vidu staklene bašte koja dozvoljava boravak u (stvorenoj) prirodi u svim godišnjim dobima. Remodelovanje elementa konvencionalnog prozora – površina postaje volumen, izolaciju transformiše povećanjem fleksibilnosti granice koja definiše prostore različitih nivoa dostupnosti. The intervention gives the possibility of creating an extension of the interior space in the form of a greenhouse that allows to stay in (created) nature at all seasons. Remodeling of a conventional element of the window - the surface becomes volume, isolation is transformed through the increase of the flexibility of the boundary that defines spaces of different levels of accessibility.

The open spaces within the city block have always been spaces for socialization, contact, communication, entertainment grounds for all generations. Providing spatial distance and physical barriers in the area of socialization, communication, and recreation is an unusual challenge, to which offered response was generated as a systematic approach applied on a particular housing block in the central city area, where this type of space is necessary for all age groups.
dr Nataša Ćuković Ignjatović
Promišljanje fizičkih distanci kroz ukidanje socijalne distance je osnovni kvalitet rešenja. Formiranje novih prostornih relacija razmatranjem morfologije terena u okviru otvorenog javnog prostora omogućava ostvarivanje društvenih kontakata bez rizika izlaganju infekciji i uz poštovanje mera bezbednosti.

How can architecture offer us “extended living”? - Perhaps “extended living space” is the architect’s most direct and specific response. The fresh, dynamic, open system suggested by a group of students is reminiscent of how many different benefits we can generate by thoughtful but straightforward actions, and that there is a solution even in very unfavorable circumstances - health and spatial inextricably linked.
The solution addresses the theme of the ephemeral in architecture, offering the ability to influence users to personalize space and achieve the desired level of comfort. The proposal of the structure is defined through a clear system (exoskeleton) that allows flexibility in the choice of the offered elements, thus forming a unique extension of the living space.
dr Ivana Rakonjac
Conceptually, an exoskeleton that serves as an appendix to the articulation of an existing façade plane is interpreted as a new, structural, generic framework that enables individual programming interventions. Where and how can we obtain a “polygon”, a spatial and functional framework for meeting our needs that were not previously related to housing? The project brings together two very interesting yet different problems and proposes an integrated response in the form of a sustainable model for (a) caring about individuals and families who must be isolated in (b) revitalized abandoned buildings in Vojvodina villages. Revitalized rural estates (by different types of cooperation of public institutions and their owners) are part of the institutional system care for people in periods of emergency (pandemics, but also floods, earthquakes, etc.). At other times, outside of these periods, they can be used as a resource for the development of eco - ethno rural tourism and revitalization of rural areas.

Rad odlikuje integralni pristup planiranju razvoja i obnove napuštenih seoskih domaćinstava, kao i rafinisan model prenamene i rekonstrukcije seoskih kuća i uređenja pomoćnih objekata i bašti. The project is characterized by an integral approach to the planning development and reconstruction of abandoned rural households and a refined model for the conversion and revitalization of rural houses and the arrangement of ancillary facilities and gardens. More deliberate goals have been set to provide housing for the recovery of the sick, their social and economic integration, bringing the financial sustainability of the project. The approach has been analyzed on a specific example and can be applied as a model in practice.

An innovative and incredibly inspiring concept of assembling and disassembling structures composed of prefabricated modules for the accommodation of people whose clinical image does not require medical treatment, but isolation. This concept is based on the application of various systems of advanced technological solutions. The futuristic approach encourages discussion and reflection on new models that are applicable at the time of a pandemic, as well as other situations in which temporary accommodation is quickly needed.

I najposle, Zrak ukazuje na neophodnost podizanja svesti o značaju javnog zdravlja i brige o najugroženijima, i važnosti sistema zdravstvene zaštite. The “Zrak” (eng. Ray) in this paper has multiple meanings. The ray is a vertical - an assemblable center core with modular units as an extension of existing COVID patient care centers, staff placement, and laboratory analysis. The ray is also the illuminated axis of the city, showing information about the number of infected people. Finally, the ray points to the need to raise awareness about the importance of public health and care for the most vulnerable and the importance of the health care system.

Aiming to stimulate broader social concern, the focus of the professional attention of this project is are the homeless people, whose lives are at constant risk, but especially during the pandemic. With admirable empathy, students reflect on their everyday life. Then, with tremendous creative energy and serenity, design complex assemblies made up of small units of diverse typologies, construction technologies, and materialization. The especially significant part is seen in the quest for spatial solutions and construction methods that enable the acquisition of new life skills necessary for their social reintegration.

The critical reflection on the housing problem of primarily homeless people in Belgrade inspired the creation of modular capsules made from sustainable and recycled materials, tailored to the users’ needs. The added value of the work is perceivable in the approach of circular change of use - temporary housing in an existing underutilized brownfield site of „Snaga i svetlost’’.

ŠTA DALJE?
NEXT STEPS?
The results of the online student workshop "Challenges of COVID-19: A Pandemic Architecture" can be recognized on two levels. The first level is reflected in the professional contribution in line with the challenges of COVID-19 in the form of 29 conceptual designs and studies that offer answers on different spatial and program matters. The pandemic architecture thematic and research framework formed a scope within which students were encouraged and empowered to seek, in both process and problem-oriented manner, the answers to contemporary societal challenges. In that order, the disciplinary framework of architecture and urbanism is once again illuminated as a symbiosis of technical, technological, socio-humanistic and artistic aspects. The second level of contribution is reflected in the developed model and methodological framework of distance learning through the Microsoft Teams application, which can serve as a model for the realization of similar teaching and extracurricular activities in the future.
We would like to thank all the students and teachers who contributed to the successful realization of all activities, through their dedication and active participation during the workshop.
