Board Commentary
Raising Cattlewomen
by Kay Klompien, Area 2 Director
I often find myself sitting at the kitchen table pondering the adventures, trials and thrills that are in store for our children and grandchildren. What challenges will they face? What is God’s plan for them? How can we prepare them for the future? What efforts can we make to set them up for success? What will be their dreams, their goals and their inspiration? How do you preserve a legacy?
Many of you know that our Red Angus herd originated from my side of the family. My parents started breeding Red Angus in 1968; buying the red calves from a local black Angus breeder who would get the occasional “red head.” Acquiring a few head here and there, they began researching data to be able to “reinstate” the papers on a group that had dropped their registrations. It was anything but easy; but the belief in the breed and the dream of an elite Red Angus herd was very vivid, and so they worked hard to make their dream a reality. Hoping to pass their dream to the next generation, in 1983 they sold the ranch and herd to my brother.
As can happen, things didn’t quite work out as planned, and my parents ended up reclaiming 200 acres and 50 of the cows that they thought they could get reinstated into the Red Angus registry. The dream for the herd’s succession had seemingly died. Nonetheless, my parents pulled themselves back up by their bootstraps, readjusted their sights and began to pursue their dream – unaware that my dad’s health would soon fail and he would be unable to continue. In a twist of fate, I was offered the op tion to purchase the bred heifers and lease the rest of the herd along with the pasture.
The succession of the dream was alive again! This time, it was MINE to pursue – a girl who now had a wonderful husband, lived on a dairy, had two daughters and worked full-time at the American Simmental Association. Yes, God’s sense of humor is pretty good! With a herd of Holsteins, a herd of Red Angus and working at American Sim

mental, nearly every waking hour was spent thinking about cows, milking cows, working cows, calving cows, feeding cows, breeding cows, fencing pasture for cows, blood typing cows, data entry for cows and talking to other people about their cows.
Fast forward through a few life lessons, heartaches, many joys and some trials, we are looking again at the succession of the herd. We have two daughters and our oldest is a registered nurse married to a dry-land farmer – they have an 8-year-old son and a 6-year-old daughter. Our youngest daughter is very involved with the herd. She works on the ranch, does all of our marketing, owns cattle of her own and is married to an engineer – they also have two daugh ters: 5 and 3.
We are constantly searching for wisdom; how and when to hand over the reins? We have raised our daughters to be responsible, Godly women, but have we
done enough to give them the inspira tion, dedication and fortitude to succeed in the agriculture world today?
As I reflect, I am overcome with a sense of peace and pure joy. No doubt, my parents would be proud to know that their efforts were just the beginning of a
dream. A dream that would be cultured and shared by their daughter and her family. They would be over the moon to know that their legacy will indeed continue – handed down to the next generation through the cattlewomen of the family. Our girls have got this! My heart is full. //

Association Commentary
Benefits of Teamwork and Collaboration
by Tom Brink, RAAA Chief Executive Officer
A popular book called “The Marketing Mavens,” published in 2007 by Noel Capon, offered this memorable statement: “Nobody is as smart as everybody.” There is a lot of other good information in this book, but that statement rises to the top because it is as true as it is simple.
No one person has all the brains, all the ideas, all the experience or all the knowledge that are needed to win, and then win again, in today’s complex business environment. That is why we work together at the Red Angus Association of America and why teamwork and collaboration are such a big deal. Just like your favorite football team, results are better when the group pulls together toward a common goal, and everyone contributes.
The RAAA was founded on this principle. Take the best thoughts, best concepts, best perspectives and best industry relationships among our stakeholders, mix them together, and what you get is a greater likelihood of success in advancing the breed. Red Angus breed building is unquestionably a team sport.
Cooperation requires give and take, but it is critical in making the best decisions possible. Not everyone sees everything the same, and that is a good thing. There is value in the constructive and friendly collision of different opinions.
Red Angus uses a combination of a committee and board structure to establish general strategy and set policy. Any member can offer an idea for improvement, and it will be listened to and considered. However, final implementation (or the lack thereof) depends on how that idea is accepted as it passes through the appropriate committee and then moves on to the board.
Red Angus is positioned for more successes because of teamwork and collaboration, and the willingness to keep moving forward with the breed’s best interest in mind.

Association Commentary: Benefits of Teamwork and Collaboration
There is a process in place to continually accept grassroots input, and from there, it is up to the committees and board to determine what actually get implemented.
Association employees are also a great source of information and knowledge that help strengthen the Red Angus breed. They are working with the membership and out in the beef industry interfacing with all production segments every single day. That makes their input invaluable, particularly on the operational side, but also as it relates to strategy.
Many of RAAA’s current programs, such as Learn from the Best, Red Choice and our second-to-none bull price analysis originated from employee ideas. The same is true for many of the tactics currently being employed to support the breed’s 20212026 Strategic Plan.
What becomes apparent is that there’s a whole lot of collaboration taking place at Red Angus. We have a structure in place to facilitate broadbased input and discussion, followed by specific channels for decision making. This allows the best ideas to be acted upon, no matter where they originate.
time to time. Changes to the bylaws are made infrequently and only with the approval of the membership, being voted on at the National Red Angus Convention in September. Rules and regulations are subject to more frequent updates and changes, often small, via approval by the board of directors.
In recent years around the boardroom table, when important decisions are being discussed, a key guiding principle is often brought up as a reminder: “Always do what is best for the breed and the rest will take care of itself.”
The two primary documents which guide Association practices are our rules and regulations and bylaws, both of which are available to members on RedAngus.org. Changes and updates are made to both documents from
RAAA has had many successes in the past and is positioned for many more to come.
Why? The main reason is teamwork and collaboration, and the willingness to keep moving forward with the breed’s best interest in mind. //

Weekly Email Marketing Service of Feeder and Finished Cattle
To better serve Red Angus commercial cattlemen, RAAA has created a Red Angus show list for feedyards and packers looking for Red Angus-influenced cattle. Producers can market feeder or finished cattle through this free service when selling through a sale barn, video auction or private treaty. The show list is emailed out weekly to potential buyers through the Red Angus FeederFax email service. This free service is designed to inform feedyard managers, order buyers and other interested parties of cattle for sale. To upload information about cattle or to view cattle available, visit RedAngus.org/showlist.
To receive the weekly FeederFax marketing service that will highlight that week’s show list, please email tags@redangus.org.

14 RED ANGUS Magazine | December 2022
Consider 840 EIDs for Your Calves EIDs are continuing to become more of a necessity in program cattle. They offer more versatility, make it easier to maintain records and have a better retention rate. The accuracy of the EID reader allows for less error when recording tag numbers from the pro ducer to the packing plant and every step in between.
Using EIDs can increase your chances of receiving carcass data or other in formation on the cattle later through the supply chain. Other third-party program companies, such as IMI Global, now require the application of EIDs in all of their cattle, and often, packers and feedyards are more likely to purchase cattle with EIDs.
Why 840 EIDs
There are two types of RFIDs: stock EIDs and 840 EIDs. They are priced the same at Red Angus and have the
same data recording properties, but stock EIDs are used for in-herd data use and cannot be used as an official animal identification. The 840 EID button carries much more versatility as it is the official ear tag for ani mal identification. This EID button can represent many things, such as enrollment in multiple value-added programs from various companies, calf hood vaccinations for your heifer calves, and required identification when moving sexually intact cattle over 18 months interstate or when cattle are being exported to Canada.
To get 840 EIDs, you must have a premise number for your operation and must contact the state veterinari an to get that number. It’s a quick pro cess that can be done over the phone.
Are you aware that free 840 EID but tons may be available from your state veterinarian for replacement cattle? In
Special FCCP Red Angus Feeder Calf Sale Calendar
some states, free RFIDs are available through the state veterinarian office for replacement females via a govern ment program. All you have to do is ask your local veterinarian or call your state veterinarian!
Do you already have tamper-proof, one-time-use EIDs on hand from another source? RAAA can incorporate program-compliant tags from out side sources into RAAA value-added programs for just $1 per RFID. Let us know when you call to enroll your calves, and we will send you the form to list the EID numbers you already have, and we will import them into our system to also represent enroll ment in FCCP or AA.
From all of us in value-added pro grams, we hope you enjoy the holidays and have a great calving season. We look forward to enrolling your cattle and adding value to your operation. //

Auction Barn Professionals Offer Top Management Tips for Maximizing Profits on Sale Day
by Macey Mueller, for the Red Angus Magazine
Sale day is an exhilarating time filled with a mix of emotions and nerves. For some producers, it may be their largest – or sometimes only – payday of the year, and success in the sale ring is often the result of months of planning, factoring and decision making. While industry-standard vaccination protocols and third-party verification programs typically add value to calves, seasoned auctioneers and sale barn manag ers know there are a few additional steps producers can take to make management efforts really pay off.
Communicate with Your Marketing Partner
As the general manager and an auctioneer at St. Onge Live stock, Justin Tupper markets close to 160,000 head of cattle through his sale barn in St. Onge, South Dakota, each year. He said communication is key when it comes to promoting cattle, so producers should be sure to disclose genetics and shot programs that could be of special interest to potential buyers.
Additionally, auction barn managers typically have a strat egy to get cattle unloaded, sorted and into the ring in a timely manner, and Tupper said the producers who take the time to consign their cattle and make a plan – rather than just showing up on sale day – are often more successful.
“Time is money for everybody in the cattle business these days,” he said. “When customers let me know what cattle they’re bringing, we’re able to set up times and figure out how to get those calves unloaded and through the ring efficiently, which helps keep them fresh and looking their best for buyers.
“If I see somebody who is dissatisfied, it’s usually because we didn’t have the communication we needed to make sure things went smooth ly on their one big payday for the year.”
Prepare For Shipping Day
Blake Nuffer and his family own Montana Livestock Auction just west of Butte, Montana, where they market close to 70,000 head of cattle annually. He said a smooth shipping day actually starts weeks beforehand, and the extra prepara tion can make a big difference at the weigh up.
organized when shipping day comes,” he said. “Make sure your corrals are in good shape, make sure the gates are swinging properly and make sure you have plenty of good help.

“You don’t have to go fast, but going smoothly helps ensure your cattle get loaded under less stress and in a safe man ner. It’s your payday for the year, so take it seriously and get those calves loaded as efficiently as possible.”
Nuffer said when possible, cattle that aren’t shipping should be sorted three to four weeks prior to prevent additional stress and shrink.
“Every time you have to sort calves out of the herd it adds stress and potential weight loss,” he said. “If there’s a light end you’re not ready to sell or you know there are calves that don’t fit a video contract, it’s best to get them out of there ahead of time and give the others an opportunity to grow and keep their bloom.”
Invest in Genetics
Whether you’re looking to sell more pounds or raise better replacement females, when it comes to bull selection, both Nuffer and Tupper agree that good genetics can drive profit able production.
“I realize good bulls can be a huge overhead expense, but I am a big believer in keeping your feet to the fire when it comes to improving your herd and producing better calves,” Nuffer said. “You don’t have to break yourself, but good genetics can be a real game changer, so it’s worth building

connections with quality seedstock producers, finding the sires that are going to help maximize profit potential and making the investment for your operation.”
“We’re seeing it more now than we have sometimes in the past, but pounds make dollars,” Tupper added. “When you can find ways to get your 1,300-pound cow to produce more pounds at weaning time, that’s always going to pay dividends in some way, and raising that bigger calf helps to make her more efficient when it comes to production costs.”

Cull Hard on Cows
With a widespread drought affecting feed and forage pro duction, many producers have already started thinning their herds to conserve resources. Nuffer said even if a cow is young, gets bred and raises a calf, she may not be a produc tive female worthy of staying on the ranch.
“We need to be tough on our cows and not make excuses for them,” he said. “Regardless of her age, if she’s not bred or she’s raising a peanut that doesn’t size up with your other calves, write that number down and send her on down the road. That’s just grass a good cow could be eating.
“I think we’re going to see this weigh up cow market come back, and you’re going to be able to go to buy some nice cows to replace those who are not earning their keep.”
While current drought conditions present many issues, they also provide an opportunity to identify cows who get bred early in the season, allowing producers to tighten calving windows. Research has shown that getting a higher percent age of cows to calve within the first 21 days of the calving season results in heavier weaning weights and increased pregnancy rates compared to later calving cows.
“When you’re considering which cows to cull, look at those who are not getting bred early in the season,” Nuffer said.
“We may be in a situation where our cow herds are shrink ing, but if you can tighten up your calving dates, you may be able to sell just as many pounds of beef as you would if you just kept leaving those cows strung out in a long calv ing season.”
Look for Opportunities to Differentiate
A common issue at St. Onge and many other auction barns across the county is the flood of spring-born calves going to market in October, November and early December. Tupper acknowledges the variance in weather conditions and feed availability in different areas, but suggests if possible, produc ers should consider alternative strategies to avoid the “glut.”
“When everybody calves in such a short window, we group those cattle up into a time slot that puts pressure on the market,” he said.
“If you’re able to do something that is not exactly the norm, that’s not the same as everybody else, it’s probably going to be an advantage for you.
“I hear a lot of folks say ‘that’s what my dad did and that’s what his dad did, so that’s what we do,’ but in today’s busi ness you have to be willing to think outside the box to make management decisions that work for you, not just because that’s the way it’s always been done.” //

Calving season is an important part of the cattle busi ness – maybe the most important part. If a cow is our factory, her calf is our product.
Time that we devote to making sure we have a healthy product is never wasted. To guarantee the health and well-being of our calves, we must be proactive. We must give careful thought and planning as we prepare for calving season.
As I have gotten older, my herd has gotten bigger and so has my respon sibility around the farm. I have grown to take on a more active role in care and husbandry of not only my person al herd, but also my family’s. From bedding stalls during the day, to help ing pull calves when needed, to doing night checks, all are very important part of my responsibility. One moment I will never forget is getting the call in the middle of the night that my dad needed help pulling a calf. So, in true farm girl fashion, I went out to the barn in pajama pants, boots and a jacket. Even though I was tired and
cold, I still knew the importance of getting this calf out of its momma and making sure it was alive, warm and healthy.
Being prepared for those midnight calls is a given when it comes to calv ing season. We cannot predict when and where a cow is going to calve, so being prepared is one of the most important things you can do. Part of this planning is making sure you have all of the necessary supplies needed for calving. Regarding calving supplies, it’s always “better to have and not need, than need and not have.”

Calving
Calving
Calving at different times of the year often requires slightly different sup plies and precautions. For the sake of
this article, I will be offering sugges tions that would benefit those that calve in the extreme cold. Here is a list
Description
They are used to put around the cannon bone and pastern, to assist with pulling a calf.
This can be a calving pen, squeeze chute, halter or other secure restraint systems.
Mechanical winch that will aid in extreme dystocia.
of some (not all) supplies/precautions, along with a brief description of each and why they are important:
Why is it Important?
Invariably, every rancher will have to help at one point or another during calving season.
To protect the rancher and the cow from harm or injury when assistance is required.
Occasionally more leverage is required than a person can exert.
Contains the necessary immunoglobulins to protect the calf from diseases and pathogens.
Available methods to get colostrum into the calf’s belly.
Straw, sawdust, cornstalks, etc.
Provides weight of newborn calf.
Colostrum is required in the first 24 hours of life to gain passive immunity.
Since colostrum is critical to a calf’s survival, the means to administer colostrum are equally as important.
Provides an insulation between the new baby and the frozen or muddy ground.
In a data-driven breed like Red Angus, accurate weights are essential.
Although calving is often a stressful and tiring time, it is also one of the most rewarding experiences in a rancher’s year. //

Watch Your Toes! The Next Step Toward Profitability
by Teres Lambert for the Red Angus Magazine
If you’ve heard a cowman talk about paying a significant amount for a bull packed with genetic merit, that he was forced to sell sooner than desired because the bull got bad feet and couldn’t travel and get cows bred, you likely sympathized. And you probably walked away thinking “glad I dodged that bullet.”
The good news is that you don’t ever have to have that “dodged that bullet” feeling. You can join the growing ranks of producers who have added “feet” to their decision-making factors before purchasing a bull.
Research Leads to Tool
In the mid 2010s, industry leaders began hearing from commercial producers concerned about an increase in feet and leg issues.
“There are likely a number of causes for the increased incidence of feet and leg issues,” stated Bob Weaber, Ph.D., professor and head of Eastern Kansas Research and Ex tension Centers, Kansas State University. “One part is the al location of selection pressure to other traits in the breeding objective. Part of the issue is also that fewer producers are trained to evaluate feet and leg structure.”
Bull buyers should evaluate a bull’s feet first. If his feet don’t measure up, his EPDs, pedigree and other data are irrelevant.
Weaber and his colleagues at Kansas State University were among those who took feet-and-leg concerns seriously and, as a result, began conducting feet-and-leg research.
“While our breed wasn’t hearing a lot of rumblings about feet and legs, we heard enough to want to try and get ahead

of the problem,” stated Harold Bertz, RAAA director of com mercial marketing. “Our Red Angus Foundation prioritized it and provided funding for this research at Kansas State University.
“We were all for a tool that could help producers evaluate feet and legs.”
You can’t make a profit in the beef industry if a cow doesn’t last six years, minimum, with the goal of being in the herd for 10 to 12 years.
“Longevity can increase profitability, and longevity starts on the ground when you’re buying a bull.”
The Kansas State research did result in a tool: “Foot and Leg Scoring Guidelines” that were adopted by the Beef Improvement Federation and Red Angus. The researchers also produced prototype EPDs for a wide range of feet-andleg traits.
Start with the Toes
“If bull buyers don’t look at feet and start there, all the great data behind the bull is irrelevant,” explained Bruce Ketchum, Plevna, Montana. “The best EPDs, pedigree, weights, carcass scans and other data don’t mean anything if a bull can’t walk or produce daughters that have longevity.
Cow-calf and seedstock producers who take a no-prisoners approach aim their attention on the ground: the toes of potential herd sires.
In addition to being dense, each hoof should have two symmetrical claws that point forward and have appropri ate space between them. Yearlings to scratch off the list of potential sires are those with an open, divergent claw set; claws that curl and one claw is noticeability larger than the other; scissor claws; and/or screw claws where the twisting of the toe places the side wall of the hoof in direct contact with the ground.

In the accompanying graphic, bulls with a claw set of 5 are the ones to keep on the potential purchase list. While scores 4 and 6 show slight variation from ideal, Red Angus’ Foot and Leg Scoring Reference notes that toes with those scores are “considered acceptable.” While scores 3 and 7 show greater variation from ideal, they are “borderline acceptable for a commercial operation.”
If a crack in the hoof is evident, think twice about keeping this animal on the potential sire list, however. That crack could be an indication that the hoof cannot support the weight of the animal.
Also take note of worn toes as they are often an indication of the hoof being dragged, suggesting straight hind legs.
Foot angle – the measurement of the pastern joint’s angle, the depth of heel and length of the foot – reveals a lot about an animal’s ability to walk and stand. A bull with foot angle that is too steep (see scores 1, 2 and 3) or a bull that has a shallow heel and long toe (see scores 7, 8 and 9) should be avoided.
The bulls to keep on the bid list are those with toes of sufficient length and heel depth. Additionally, the slope of their pasterns should be 45 degrees above the ground. Pas terns play a role in providing cushion and support as cattle walk and stand, and some flex is desired. Bulls with weak pasterns, as well as those where the angle or set to their pas terns is too tight and restricted, are potential candidates for
lameness issues and the removal of an otherwise genetically superior bull out of service.
Check Out His Walk, Management
A structurally correct bull should have a well-coordinated and smooth gait, with his rear hooves being placed exactly in the indentation left by his front hoof. When evaluating a bull that moves freely forward, each of his legs should pass through a plane parallel to the mid-line of his body. His legs should not swing in, or out, as they are carried forward.
If a bull short steps and doesn’t reach his mark, he is not moving freely and might be straight in his leg structure. Overstepping, or under-stepping, could impact the serving ability of the bull. A bull that under-steps often has straight hind legs, increasing the potential for mating problems.
Good feet versus not-so-good feet can be attributed to ge netics or the environment.
Research conducted by Weaber and his team found that “the limb angulation and foot attributes – including toe length and heel depth – were genetically and phenotypically cor related” and “have moderate heritability.”
Industry research shows that well-managed yearling bulls, grass-raised bulls and lightly fed bulls tend to have fewer structural problems and longer working lives than yearling bulls that have been pushed too hard. The “why” is simply because, as well-managed yearling bulls develop, their body
Good-footed bulls have toes of sufficient length and heel depth, and the slope of their pasterns should be 45 degrees above the ground.

weight is more in keeping with the weight-bearing ability of their joints.
“Seedstock producers have responded to customer signals that tend to suggest commercial producers prefer heavier conditioned and bigger bulls at sale time,” Weaber stated.
“If commercial producers want a different product – more modest development – they need to communicate that to bull sellers. Commercial producers may also want to seek out age-advantaged bulls – 18 to 24 months of age – to reduce development pressure on bulls.”
To avoid feet challenges related to genetics, Ketchum does more than simply evaluate a potential herd sire’s feet.
“When I’m looking for a bull, I do more than just evaluate a yearling bull’s feet,” Ketchum explained. “We have found yearling bulls, moved them out of the straw to look at their feet and their feet looked really good. But three years later the feet aren’t what we like.
“We learned a big lesson there. So now I want to see more than just the feet of the bull. I want to see the feet of the bull’s dam and the sire, as well as other progeny of the sire. You’ll see trends, and those trends can help you decide whether to purchase a certain bull or not.” //

How to Enroll in FCCP and AA
1. The producer contacts the Red Angus Association of America at 940-477-4593 and answers a short supplier enrollment questionnaire over the phone. RAAA staff will ask general management, animal identification and breeding questions. If needed, the producer may be asked to supply additional documentation on breeding such as semen receipt, lease agreements or information on purchased females.
2. After all documentation is recorded, staff will ship the tags directly to the producer who must tag the calves before they leave the ranch of origin – birth, branding, preconditioning, weaning or before loading on the semi.
3. The producer will receive a customer enrollment agreement to fill out and return to RAAA with a copy of their calving records.
4. Staff will issue the USDAapproved Certificate of Compliance upon receiving the customer enrollment agreement and calving record.

Connecting the Beef Industry to the World
by Sarah Hill for the Red Angus Magazine
As a fourth-generation Red Angus producer, Red Angus cattle are in Calli Thorne’s genetics. She’s taken a strong foundation with the Red Angus breed and expanded it to encompass leadership and helping those in the agriculture industry with improving their mental health.
Thorne’s parents, Winton and Vicki Wold, and brother Blake and his wife, Whitney, still run a predominantly Red Angus herd, raising both regis tered and commercial cattle. Thorne and her husband, CJ, also run their own herd for a total of 100 cows in their operation.
“Red Angus impacted our operation in a number of ways,” Thorne said. “It really helped us prioritize and improve our genetics. Another big thing was marketing.”
Thorne said that bundling Red Angus steers or heifers when selling allowed the animals to get a premium for quality.
“We appreciate how docile the Red Angus cattle are,” she said. “We can really tell a difference when we’re working our black cattle. The Red Angus females also have longevity and maternal traits that we like.”
The Thornes prefer to take a hands-off approach to managing their cattle, specifically selecting for cows with good calving ease and mothering characteristics.
“We really want to let the cows do what they’re supposed to do,” she said. “We’ve also shifted our calving time to late April or May, so the cows calve out on pasture when it’s a bit warmer.”
The couple also manage a back grounding feedlot of just shy of 1,000 head, where they feed some of their own calves, as well as calves from Thorne’s parents’ and other neighbors’ herds.
The operation is very much a family undertaking, according to Thorne.
Thorne and her husband, CJ, with their kids Tylee, 11, Casen, 9, and Laney, 5.
Thorne grew up as a fourth-generation Red Angus breeder in western North Dakota. Pictured with her are parents, Winton (r) and Vicki (l) Wold, and brother, Blake Wold.

Connecting the Beef Industry to the World
“We all work together for branding, working cattle, pregnancy checking and hauling,” she said.
Feeding so many cattle is a challenge, especially during dry years. Earlier this spring, two late blizzards hit North Dakota, providing the essential moisture to put up more than 4,000 hay bales. Last year, another dry year, the operation put up fewer than 900 bales.
“Those two blizzards saved us,” Thorne said. “A little bit of moisture can make a huge difference for us.”
The Thornes also stockpile forages and rent hay ground. Having strong neighbor relationships has helped the operation thrive when feed is hard to find, according to Thorne.
“If neighbors have a crop that didn’t turn out, they’ll call us to come and bale it,” she said. “We sometimes have to be creative with what we’re feeding, and the rations aren’t the same every year.”
Cover crops have been another feed source for the Thornes, including turnips, radishes and different grasses. The cover crops extend their grazing season, relieving the need to feed hay on a daily basis.
“We look at the cost analysis of what it costs to feed the breeding herd and our cattle in the feedlot and try to get those numbers as low as possible,” she said. “We have to analyze our feed resources as a business strategy.”
Leading the Way
Thorne worked for North Dakota State University Extension after college but shifted to sales after she and CJ started their family. During those eight years, the Thornes expanded their family to in clude Tylee, 11, Casen, 9, and Laney, 5.
“About three years ago, I pivoted more specifically into leadership with the John Maxwell Company,” she said. “I do some training, give keynotes and help groups work on leadership skills such as communication.”
Leadership coaching allows Thorne to work with a variety of groups, from oil field companies to women’s agricul ture groups to bankers, and more. Each group provides Thorne with an opportunity to share stories from her agriculture background on how leadership is an impactful part of her family’s agricultural business.
“I customize the leadership trainings for each group,” she explained. “Com munication always rises to the top.
The younger generation is looking for professional development. I also do one-on-one coaching and work with executive teams.”
Mindset is a major part of Thorne’s leadership coaching, especially when she’s working with those from the agriculture industry.
“How we view things can make a huge difference in their operation and help them be successful,” she said. “This in dustry can be hard to be part of. There are a lot of things we can’t control –the weather, markets, etc. We have to accept the circumstances we’ve been dealt and figure out how we can make sound decisions that will impact the bottom line.”
Thorne said a shift in mindset can be a game changer for everyday life, es pecially when you’re living an agricul tural lifestyle.
“Stress is a trigger, but you can con trol your own thoughts, attitude and how you choose to show up,” she said.
Mind Over Matter
Over time, Thorne has expanded her business to include coaching and guidance on mental health. She notes that being able to communicate effec tively and connect with those around us is critical to success in the agricul ture industry.

the signs and symptoms of mental distress without feeling awkward about it.
“It’s hard for people to ask, ‘Are you OK? I haven’t seen you around as often.’ Or, ‘You seem a bit quiet.’ People have to learn how to have those conversations,” she said, “because it can mean saving a life.”
Bringing mental health challenges to the forefront is a stark change from the past, when there was a lot of stig ma around mental health and previous generations encouraged cattlemen to “toughen up.”
Although Thorne is quick to note that she’s not a clinical psychologist and doesn’t give diagnoses, one thing she can do is equip people with the skills to be able to comfortably have a con versation with someone and identify
“There’s also a lot of fear of mess ing up,” Thorne said. “There’s a lot at stake in the agriculture industry. We’re talking six-figure, multi-mil lion-dollar operations, and one wrong decision could cost it all. Cattle pro ducers don’t want to be the generation that loses it all for their family.” //
It can be challenging to work in the beef industry. There are a lot of things we can’t control – the weather, markets, etc., but Thorne said we must accept the circumstances we’ve been dealt and figure out how we can make sound decisions that will impact the bottom line.

Time is Evolving – Are We?
by Kaytlin Hokanson, Top Dollar Angus Field Representative and Analyst
Recently, I came across a blog by the Painterland Sisters, Stephanie Painter, who owns and operates Painterland Farms with her family in Pennsylvania. Throughout the blog post, Stephanie speaks deeply about how a woman’s role in agriculture has evolved through generations and decades. A few things stuck out to me that I want to share.
Here are three things that women excel at:
1. Fostering community networks
2. Connecting social and economic life within their communities
3. Creating connections across rural communities
The Painterland Sisters expressed that women always have and continue to “work tirelessly behind the scenes” and pro vide support for the farm’s operation. Before the world wars, a woman’s role on a farm or ranch operation was bookkeep ing, gardening and caring for children, while finding viable markets for their goods traded and sold to various outlets.
“When World War I began, history recorded that men were taken from the ranches and farms to be placed into battle leaving women to work the land, thus proving that women are highly capable and can be successful in keeping Ameri can farms afloat,” the Painterland Sisters explained.
Let’s connect the three elements that women excelled at pre- and post-war, to women in agriculture today. As time has evolved, there continues to be a shift in a woman’s role in the agricultural industry.
Women are finding themselves in leadership roles on and off their operations. We are seeing many women becoming full-time ranchers and farmers, ag-business owners and continuing their education in ag-related fields after high school.
Social media platforms are constantly growing and are a great tool to foster community networks. Unfortunately, agriculture’s enemies utilize these platforms to criticize and ridicule.
Many women in ag have taken the challenge to factually upend these accusations and educate consumers. By using modern technology as a driver to advocate for agriculture, women have the ability to connect social and economic life to multiple audiences in rural and urban communities.
Organizations such as FarmHer, USDA Women in Agricul ture and American National CattleWomen Inc., help pro mote industry-leading women and advocate for communi ties all over the country.
A woman’s role has and will continue to evolve and diversify in the ag industry, so a relevant question might be, “why haven’t you done the same with your herd’s genetics?”
Now, I bet you are thinking “Whoa, Kaytlin! That is way out of left field.” Yet, in reality, they are very similar. Like a woman’s role in agriculture, a producer’s genetics are not the same as they were 40 years ago. Women have been ap plauded for stepping up to the task and taking on leadership roles in the industry.
Why not promote rancher genetics for how they have improved over time, with the goal of producing genetically advanced cattle that benefit all segments of the beef indus try, including consumers? Just like women in agriculture, always helping the industry, the Top Dollar Angus team is available to help producers see a strong return on invest ment for promoting their high-quality genetics.
The age of leveraging genetics to the benefit of ranchers and the rest of the supply chain is rapidly approaching. We’ve barely scratched the surface on what the best genetics can do in making cattle more valuable. Someone will be helping take their operations into a brighter genetic future, and that someone just might be a woman. //
