Kimberley is proud to be one of the most authentic historical destinations in South Africa. So with this in mind, we produced this publication to create an awareness of, and an interest in, some of the tourist highlights Kimberley has to offer. At the same time, we packed this publication with valuable commercial information to assist you in doing some quality shopping in Kimberley. We grouped together various attractions, for your convenience, in short and interesting tours built around themes which are exclusive to Kimberley and are very unique. It is therefore our deepest desire that you will enjoy visiting these historic places and that they will generate many fond memories to share later with friends and family. Please note that you will get much more out of all these tours by booking an accredited tourist guide to accompany you. In addition, we recommend that you visit the NOCCI Tourism Centre at the Big Hole (Tel. 053 830-4426) for a detailed tourist guide book and other relevant information.

Enjoy your stay! PS – All advertisers in “The Meander” appear in the following website www.kimberleymeander.co.za

The

Kimberley Story by Steve Lunderstedt

he title evokes thoughts of the early days, of boisterous diggers in one of the many saloons and pubs that studded the winding roads of the canvas and corrugated iron diamond town, swigging draughts and singing along with, dare one say it, scantily clad womenfolk. Great fun indeed, these early days of New Rush on the farm Vooruitzicht, except for the fact that the Colonial Secretary detested both the term New Rush – too vulgar – and Vooruitzicht – he could hardly spell it, let alone pronounce it! So the problem of renaming the town was passed to Richard Southey, then Lt-Governor of Griqualand West, who in turn, passed it on to John Blades Currey, the government secretary. A very worthy diplomat, Currey made very sure that the Colonial Secretary would be able to spell and pronounce the new name chosen for the town, by naming it after the secretary himself, Kimberley! The name was obviously approved by His Lordship, so Kimberley was born, but it can be certain that the diggers did not care two hoots at the time. The new name was proclaimed on 5 July 1873, although the township was founded in 1871. The story of naming Kimberley is fairly well known, but what is not well known is who the Earl of Kimberley

was, and what did he do that even today his name is as well remembered as that of his monarch, Queen Victoria? John Wodehouse was born in Wymondham, Norfolk, on 29 May 1826, the eldest son of Harry and Anne Wodehouse, and a relative of Sir Philip Wodehouse, Governor of the Cape Colony 1861-1870. At the age of 20, while still a student at Oxford University, he inherited his grandfather’s title of Baron Wodehouse, his father having predeceased him. Five years later he was appointed Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs, holding this post from 1852 to 1856, after which he became the British Ambassador to Russia.

~

The story of naming Kimberley is fairly well known, but what is not well known is who the Earl of Kimberley was, and what did he do that even today his name is as well remembered as that of his monarch, Queen Victoria?

In 1858 he resumed his former position until his promotion to Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1864, a post he held for two years. Queen Victoria conferred an Earldom upon him in 1869. He and his wife, the former Lady Florence Fitzgibbon, were living at their country estate, called Kimberley House, in the village of Kimberley in Norfolk, hence the choice of title. The name Kimberley is derived from the Anglo Saxon word Cynburgh-leah, which means “women were entitled to own land”. Two years later Lord Kimberley became a member of Gladstone’s first cabinet and from 1870 he served as Secretary for the Colonies. As his appointment coincided with the discovery of diamonds on the ‘dry diggings’ he was prominent in the dispute over the ownership of Griqualand West, and the negotiations for its annexation as British territory. Although he resigned his post in 1874, he was re-appointed by Gladstone as Colonial Secretary from 1880-1882, one of his major feats during the period being the peace settlement after the battle of Majuba in 1881. He lived long enough to hear about the siege and relief of the town named after him and died on 8 April 1902.

Rhodes’ statue will be seen, and stories told of Beit, Jameson and the then Rhodesia. Rhodes’ tree where he sorted diamonds plus Rudd House are next in line before heading off for the Masonic Temple, the Halfway House and the Sanatorium. Home of the diamond fields F r a n c e s B a a r d To u r i s m

Rich, not just in real diamonds and diggings, but also in authentic history, cultural and agriculture. DIAMOND FIELDS NORTHERN CAPE | SOUTH AFRICA A rewarding leisure and adventure destination of Southern Africa that offers thrilling wildlife, adventure encounters, as well as an exhilarating opportunity to participate in wealthy cultural and historical heritage. The Diamond Fields consists of four local Municipal Areas namely, Sol Plaatje, Dikgatlong, Magareng, Phokwane.

SOL PLAATJE AREA Kimberley the provincial capital falls under Sol Plaatje. With its rich and colourful history, and its record of firsts, Kimberley is also famous for its Big Hole, the largest hand-excavated hole on earth, and important archaeological discoveries. Also under Sol Plaatje, is the sprawling, vibrant township of Galeshewe. Tourists are invited to experience the energy and excitement of township life and visit the many new community projects.

DIKGATLONG AREA The hub of Dikgatlong, Barkley West was founded as a mission village in the area formerly known as Pniel ‘Face of God’. In 1870, diamond diggers proclaimed the area the Republic of Klipdrift. Delportshoop is situated in the confluence of the Harts and Vaal Rivers, and was an important centre in the boom days of alluvial diamond mining. The origin of Gong –Gong is in the White digger’s interpretation of the San word. Here, locals make a living by collecting alluvial stones for garden decorations.

MAGARENG AREA Warrenton falls under Magareng. Originally a produce centre for diamond diggers, today it is an important railway junction for the Cape-Zimbabwe and Cape-Gauteng lines. A holiday resort is situated just outside Warrenton.

PHOKWANE AREA Phokwane embraces Hartswater, Jan Kempdorp and Vaalharts Valley. The beautiful, fertile Vaalharts Valley in the midst of semi-desert contains the extensive Vaalharts Irrigation Scheme. Hartswater is home to Olives South Africa and offers tourist accommodation and leisure activities. Nearby is the historical burial site of Chief Galeshewe. Visitors can enjoy local wines at the Hartswater Wine Cellar. Originally named Andalusia. And the site of two World War 2 concentration camps, Jan Kempdorp lies in the heart of the irrigation area.

So too did failed romance and other downright gory deaths, like a huge fire in the old De Beers Mine in which hundreds of miners perished. Today, the shivering facts and fallacies about ghostly visitations are packed in a fun and entertaining guided ghost trail.

Kimberley has many genuine stories of ghost sightings in haunted places. The trail starts at the imposing Honoured Dead Memorial. Heart-stopping facts - and fallacies - about ghostly visitations in the Diamond City are revealed during this entertaining guided night-time tour of Kimberley. Guides lead you to some of the reputedly haunted corners of Kimberley that could include the Kimberley Club, Rhodes’ Boardroom and Rudd House - an archetypal haunted house. The tour ends just before the clock

announces the bewitching hour at the grave of the Frankensteins in the Gladstone Cemetery. There are several alternative Ghost tours available, including the recently launched Big Hole Ghost Walk as well as a visit to Magersfontein battlefield at night where perhaps one may see the swinging lanterns of the stretcher bearers and hear the ghostly bagpipes. Several battlefield graveyards are also visited on this unique tour. 1. Kimberley Club. 2. Cecil Rhodes’ De Beers Mining Company Boardroom. 3. Rudd House. 4. Frankenstein’s grave. 5. Honoured Dead Memorial. 6. Clyde N Terry Hall of Militaria. For further info contact Steve Lunderstedt: 083 732 3189 Jaco Powell: 082 572 0065

Game Viewing & Eco-Tourism

T

he Northern Cape offers wide-open spaces, unbelievable horizons, big skies and naturally functioning ecosystems.

It also offers peace, tranquillity and plenty of bird and wildlife. Close to Kimberley we have the Mokala National Park and also many game farms which offer helicopter, hunting, fishing, photographic safaris and game drives. Our birdlife has to be seen to be appreciated! A truly remarkable sight is the communal nests of the sociable weaver - sometimes even adorning telephone poles! Plants and animals in our area are superbly adapted to our conditions, for instance the Gemsbok can happily exist for months on end without drinking water – it gets enough moisture from the plants it eats! For those with an adventurous spirit there are also many adventure trails such as river rafting, mountain biking, boating, hiking, abseiling, etc.

St Patrick’s College Kimberley

While we are the oldest Christian Brothers College in Africa, many people still don’t know where we are! Our splendid old buildings fit into Kimberley so well, people often think it looks more like a home than a school, in many ways, it is! Look a little closer, however, and you’ll discover what’s missing from most children’s schooling. The kind of camaraderie that comes from a small student body, a more creative learning environment and a genuine love of the school. It’s the one small school you and your child don’t want to miss. Blink and you could be missing giving your child the best education of his/her life. If you want your child to think BIG, think SMALL!

A mixture of first and third world, the tour takes you through historic Kimberley in the footsteps of one of the greatest Africans of last century, Solomon T. Plaatje, and where better to start than at his own house, now the Sol Plaatje Museum. Plaatje, famous for his literary efforts as an author and newspaperman, was also the first Secretary-General of the ANC. A great orator, Plaatje travelled extensively around the world. After Plaatje House, it’s on to the McGregor Museum for the Ancestor’s Gallery, a drive around historical Greenpoint and Beaconsfield, and then, it’s lunch at Rhodes’ watering hole, the Halfway House Hotel. Time to continue the Plaatje trail by visiting pertinent historical sites of black cultural interest.

First, the William Humphreys Art Gallery, one of South Africa’s top art museums to view modern African art (and some old masters), then the largest collection of ethnographic photographs at the Duggan-Cronin Gallery adjacent to the McGregor Museum, and finally, the Northern Cape Legislative Assembly.

Battlefields Route T

he Anglo Boer South African War began on 11 October 1899, and within four days Kimberley was besieged by Boer soldiers. The unforgiving circle of Boers trapped the citizens of the town, including diamond magnate Cecil John Rhodes, who had taken up residence in the Sanatorium (now the McGregor Museum).

(Enslin) and Modder River, both forces gave a good account of themselves, but the Boers elected to fall back towards Magersfontein Ridge, where they entrenched. The citizens of Kimberley, knowing that the British were coming, waited anxiously for relief. Early on 11 December 1899, they knew that a heavy battle was under way. They did not know that the Boers would defeat the British, causing them to retreat to their Modder River encampment. Kimberley would have to wait until 15 February 1900 before General French and his cavalry charged through Boer lines to relieve the town. The battlefields are largely unchanged from the days of the war. Field displays explain each battle, and the roads are well sign-posted. Magersfontein, the site of the heaviest battle, boasts an interesting field museum, and includes something for the bird and animal lover as well. A restaurant provides refreshments. The story of the Relief of Kimberley is told in the Siege Rooms at the McGregor Museum.

The siege was to last 124 days, over the hottest period of the year, and placed a great burden of boredom, ever-diminishing food and water, and danger from bombardment upon the townspeople. In the last weeks of the siege, food was rationed, and sickness was taking its toll. It was deemed imperative to break the hold of the Boers on the town. To do this meant that British troops had to be moved smartly up from the south, using the existing railway, to Kimberley. The journey was not without its battles, as the Boer troops moved along the line to meet the British forces. At the Battles of Belmont, Graspan
