The 2011 Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour got off to a red-hot start by making its first visit to the Gulf states, with a date in the dunes of Dubai. Of course, the fact that it was by the cooling waters at Jumeirah Beach didn’t hurt one little bit! The big news early on was that Andre Villa had carried his exceptional 2010 form through to the new season and the Norwegian totally dominated qualifying, so much so that few could imagine anyone else stepping up to beat him in the main event. Spanish flier Dany Torres had other ideas though, and the man they call DT was on fire on the big stage. After eclipsing defending champ Nate Adams in the semis, Torres beat Villa in a thrilling finale to start as he finished the 2010 Tour– with a stunning victory! Adams was left to take third with Australian rider Blake Williams taking fourth.

past Red Bull X-Fighters has visited some incredible locations over the decade, but despite visiting legendar y sites such as Egypt’s Great with the Pyramid in the past, nothing could have prepared anyone involved after series for the scenes that greeted them on the series’ return to Brazil country. the from away three years but Last time out, Rio had been the host city for a jaw-dropping contest World on this occasion it was the capital city, Brasilia, that welcomed the Tour – and what a welcome it was! some A staggering 100,000 people turned up to watch the riders pull off amazing tricks and they weren’t disappointed. The wild atmosphere seemed to rub off on the riders and throughout the night they pushed each other to bigger and bigger tricks. It was Nate Adams, though, who eventually won out, the defending champion beating out the outstanding Robbie Maddison for the top honour. After the huge crowds in Brazil it was off to an event that is fast becoming a Red Bull X-Fighters classic – Rome. Italian FMX fans are some of the most passionate and knowledgeable in the sport and with the series expanding from last year’s Stadio Flaminio to the much larger Stadio Olimpico, it looked like another thrilling, adrenaline-fuelled contest was in prospect. And so it went. Somewhere in the region of 45,000 fanatical Italian spectators squeezed into the huge arena to cheer Nate Adams to his second win of the season. Norway’s Andre Villa took second place while Aussie wild boy Josh Sheehan came out of nowhere to take third. With two wins and a third place to his credit Adams was in ominously good form and sent a further chill down the spines of his rivals by later announcing: “Now I’m going for the Tour title.” It wouldn’t be quite so straightforward though, as the next round would show.

After Adams had laid down a marker about winning the Tour title, the American was forced to sit out the round in Madrid, the traditional in home of Red Bull X-Fighters, after a bad landing in Rome resulted shoulder pain the defending champ couldn’t ignore. That handed his immediate rivals Andre Villa and Dany Torres a golden opportunity to pile on the pressure and, after crashing out in the early rounds in Rome, Torres in particular needed some big points. The stumbling block though would surely be Villa, who was again showing why he’s been a consistent title contender for the past few seasons. The Norwegian pulled off some simply enormous tricks to of march to the semi-finals and, in all likelihood, a fourth podium finish Blake inspired an against up came he though, the year. In the semis, ‘Bilko’ Williams and with the help of his patented 360 Cliffhanger, Bilko dismissed Villa to set up a final showdown with Torres. But in the final, in front of his home crowd, Torres would not be denied. While Bilko went big, Torres went technical and unveiled a complex new Cliffhanger variant that wowed the judges and earned him the victory. Meanwhile, Josh Sheehan reminded everyone why he’s being row. tipped as a future superstar by landing his second third place in a

in With just two rounds left, the tension was beginning to mount, and front of 35,000 fans in Poznan’s City Stadium, the main contenders knew they’d have to pull out all the stops if they were to claim a decisive advantage in the Tour standings. the That meant that Villa, Adams and Torres were all in superb form in practice sessions. In qualifying, though, Villa was the first to crack, the unlucky Norwegian crashing heavily and sustaining a broken leg that spelled the end of his weekend and, sadly, his title challenge. to It left the field clear for Torres and Adams, and with two wins each would either way no was there form e awesom in both and credit their surrender before facing the other in the final head-to-head battle. Torres threw down in style, bringing some of his biggest and edgiest tricks to the party, but despite blowing the judges away with a flawless Seatgrab Indian air Backflip to take the Swatch Best Trick honour, it still wasn’t enough to deny Adams. The defending champ included two 360 variations and also a one-handed takeoff backflip in his run to claim his third win of the year. Just 40 points separate Torres and Adams as Red Bull X-Fighters prepares for its final stop of the year in Sydney. Both riders are in incredible form. For Adams it’s all about stamping his authority on the series with a third Tour win. For Torres, meanwhile, there’s an insatiable hunger to land his first title. There’s a battle royal in prospect here in Sydney. It should be an incredible day!

ne’s been the dominant rider in FMX for several years, the other the young pretender tipped by many for superstardom. One is the series’ Mr Consistent, ultra-prepared and always focused on the prize, no matter what. The other is a quiet family-focused Spaniard who turns into a flamboyant ultracompetitive daredevil whenever he climbs aboard his bike. Ladies and gentlemen meet Nate Adams and Dany Torres, the pair that will battle it out today in pursuit of title glory right here in Sydney. Their championship battle has been raging all season but the competition between these two top-level riders goes back a lot further. Adams won his maiden Red Bull X-Fighters title in 2009 and hasn’t looked back since. In 2010 he majored in consistency, racking up podium finish after podium finish and scoring so heavily in each round that despite not winning a

single event during the season he was able to steal a second title from under the nose of Andre Villa, event though the Norwegian had been the form rider and championship favourite all season long. Fast forward a year and in 2011 Adams has, if anything, upped his game further. At the start of this year’s World Tour in Dubai, Adams insisted that the only thing missing from his 2010 locker was a win and he vowed to put that right this time out. He wasn’t lying. The American perfectionist has notched three victories this year, in Brazil, Italy and Poland, to give himself a solid lead coming into this final round. Indeed, so predictable had Adam’s presence on the podium being that Tour Director Tes Sewell admitted: “If you were being cruel you would say Nate is almost a robot! You can joke about him being the cyborg – if you strip away the skin you’ll find metal and machinery underneath. He’s that consistent, and he’s in spectacular form at the moment.” By contrast, Torres has been the epitome of inconsistency over the past two years, though rarely due to any kind of underperformance. In fact, the opposite is true of the Spanish flier. Whenever he clambers aboard his KTM 250SX, it’s with total commitment and Torres is regarded as one of the World Tour’s most stylish performers, bringing a daring grace and fluidity to his tricks that few others can match. The Spaniard’s problem, however, is that the intense commitment he brings often leads to him pushing too hard, with painful and debilitating consequences. In training for Brazil this year, Torres hurt his foot and on the eve of the event in Brasilia was forced to withdraw. It was a repeat of the previous year, when Torres had been forced to miss the Egypt round through a wrist injury sustained in the opening round. To make matters worse the injury continued to trouble him throughout the World Tour. The over-commitment can translate into miscued tricks too. After dominating qualifying in Rome this year, with the highest single score ever achieved by a rider in Red Bull X-Fighters, it looked like Torres would be unbeatable in the main event. But, on the big stage he pushed too hard on a Saran Wrap Backflip to Nac Nac trick and came off the bike. The error handed the win to the ever-reliable Adams. It is the essential difference between the two. Adams, like snowboarding’s Shaun White, is a refiner of tricks rather than an innovator. Where others will seek to impress with something new but flawed, Adams takes am existing trick and makes it perfect every time, often adding variations for extra points. Torres, meanwhile, is an instinct rider, relying on a vast catalogue of tricks, which, if they go well will see off any challenger but which, if botched, end in early capitulation. Tonight’s duel is, therefore, the best kind of title fight – a contest of contrasting styles. In the end it will come down to which rider manages to do what Red Bull X-Fighters demands of any winner – to throw down the biggest, baddest tricks possible and make them stick. Which one of the two that will be is anyone’s guess, but it’s going to be a thrilling ride!

2004. Madrid hosts the only event of ’04, but a new legend is born when Travis Pastrana takes his first title ahead of Nate Adams and Ronnie Renner. “Red Bull X-Fighters is more fun than any other event. The atmosphere is unique,” the new champion says. It’s about to become even more special… 2005. With crowds rising in the Red Bull X-Fighters heartland of Spain, the decision to go international is made. Given its bullfighting heritage, Mexico’s vast Plaza de Toros in Mexico City is the ideal destination. Here, Ronnie Renner dominates what is quickly becoming FMX’s most exciting series. 2006. After a glut of US wins, a new European star is born, as Swiss rider Mat Rebeaud beats Travis Pastrana in Mexico. Rebeaud eventually finishes third behind winner Pastrana and
Nate Adams, but it’s clear that a new era of internationalism beckons. Time to go global. 2007. The first World Tour takes off in 2007, with events in Mexico, Ireland and, once again, its spiritual home, Spain’s Madrid. It’s here that Travis Pastrana takes another title, blitzing the finale after also taking victory in Ireland, to claim his title back from Mat Rebeaud. 2008. The beast keeps growing. Across a six-stop season, including Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, Fort Worth in the United States, Madrid, Oeteslhofen in Germany, and the season finale in Warsaw, Mat Rebeaud is imperious. He takes three wins from the first four Tour events, and seals the title victory even before the final round. 2009. The biggest Tour yet sees Red Bull X-Fighters invade Mexico, the US, Spain and, for the first time, Canada and the UK. And despite the discovery of wonder kid Levi Sherwood, who wins at his first attempt in Mexico, it’s Nate Adams who eventually seizes the overall title, first place in Calgary and London and second in Madrid, landing him the crown ahead of friend and California neighbour Robbie Maddison. 2010. For the 10th Tour, Red Bull X-Fighters goes even bigger. Aside from the established cities Madrid and Mexico City, the series stages events at some of the world’s most iconic locations, including Egypt’s Great Pyramids on the Giza Plateau, Moscow’s incredible Red Square, and Rome, the Eternal City. The dominance of Nate Adams looks eternal too, as the ’09 champ seizes a second title. Now, in 2011, he’s on the verge of an amazing hat-trick! Can anyone stop The Destroyer today?

RED BULL X-FIGHTERS tour 2011
Maddo’s e Moments Stunt king, distance record holder, FMX superstar, In the course of a wild career Robbie Maddison has become all these things. We look back at some of his greatest feats and forward to a few more...
20
arlier this year, as the Red Bull X-Fighters 2011 World Tour was about to get underway, Robbie Maddison was asked at a press conference in Dubai how the birth of his son Kruz in October 2010 had changed him. The Aussie FMX superstar’s answer was typically honest: yes, he said, it had made him think that a time will one day come when he can no longer risk life and limb by flinging himself through the air on a motorcycle. There was a pause and then a wry smile broke out across Maddo’s face. “But there’s a still a few things I’ve got to do before then,” he laughed. That would appear to be an apt motto for the whole of Robert William Maddison’s life – just a few more things to do. From the moment his father, Peter, put him on the back of a tiny eight-horsepower Honda when Robbie was just four, the future bike legend was hooked. His was a childhood spent trekking from one motocross meet to another and all the while the youngster was honing the skills that would one day see him take on some of the greatest motorcycle feats ever seen. Before that success, however, there were dark days. Aged 16, Maddison was larking about on a jet ski when he came off

One of Aussie wild man Robbie Maddison’s most amazing feats was a jump across Greece’s 279-foot wide Corinth Canal last year.

the famed Corinth Canal, a leap of 279 feet, some 300 feet above the water. “Overcoming fear, that’s always the hardest part,” he said of the achievement. “I believe you have to take risks in life to become wiser and facing a challenge like this will help get me ready for the next feat I will face.” The first challenge is Red Bull X-Fighters’ Australian debut, a moment Robbie has been looking forward to for some time. “I left Australia in the first place to chase this level of competition and to bring Red Bull X-Fighters back home will be amazing,” he said recently. And after that? Who knows. But if his past record is anything to go by it will be a jaw-dropping leap into the unknown. And, as ever with the man they call Maddo, he will take it on just because it was on that great list of a “few more things to do.”

and swallowed a mouthful of polluted water. Days later he was in hospital suffering from a deadly combination of encephalitis and meningitis. Doctors feared the worst, but after a month in bed, blind in one eye and partially paralysed, Maddison recovered. He hasn’t looked back since. The first major achievements came with distance jumping records and in 2007 and 2008 Maddison set three world records, eventually leaping all the way to 350 feet. But it’s been with the help of Red Bull that Robbie has taken daredevilry to a whole new level. On December 31, 2008, he celebrated New Year’s Eve at Red Bull: New Year, No Limits in Las Vegas by jumping 100 feet onto and off the Arc de Triomphe in front of Paris Las Vegas. That huge jump was followed by a 2009 backflip across the open Tower Bridge in London, images of which earned Maddison global notoriety and the tag, correct or not, of natural successor to famed 1970s stunt rider Evel Knievel. The distance jumps were just one aspect of Robbie’s growing legend, however. While he was plotting and performing his distance jumps he was also taking his skills to a different arena, that of Freestyle Motocross. Maddison got his first taste of Red Bull X-Fighters back in 2005 in Madrid but didn’t feature regularly until 2007, by which time he’d learned his chops, as a third-place finish in the first round in Mexico showed. The following year he showed he could compete with the best in the world, consistent performances pushing him to second in the overall standings by the end of the Tour. It wasn’t until 2009, though, that he landed his first win, a great ride in Calgary, Canada earning him victory and a place at FMX’s top table. Since then he’s become one of the series true innovators and last year, in Madrid, he brought a stunning new trick to the World Tour in the shape of the Volt – a body varial in which he dismounts and pirouettes his body through 360 degrees beside the bike before climbing aboard again, all while in mid-air. That triumph came after another personal landmark had been reached, though, when earlier in 2010 Maddison jumped across
Robbie Maddison landed his first Red Bull X-Fighters win in Calgary in 2008 (above) and since then has introduced wild new tricks such as the Volt Body Varial (below) to the worldwide series.

Slick Tricks Red Bull X-Fighters brings the world’s finest riders to the planet’s hottest locations. as for the riders, Well, they just have to bring the sickest tricks possible! Here’s your guide to today’s biggest moves…
WHIP A relatively simple trick, demonstrated here by Levi Sherwood. The rider kicks the bike sideways in the air, so that the machine comes to at least a 90° angle before being straightened out for the landing.
ROCK SOLID A variation on the Superman Double Grab. In this trick, the rider extends his legs out behind the bike to resemble the super hero in flight. For the Rock Solid – shown here by Mat Rebeaud – the rider releases his hands sideways, totally detaching himself from the bike. He then catches the bike and uses the grab holes to pull himself back onto the saddle. difficulty 1 ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ 6
difficulty 1 ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ 5
RULER One of the trickiest moves to pull off. The rider – in this case Josh Sheehan – comes off the ramp and throws his feet up towards the sky, while also pushing the rear of the bike down. The name Ruler comes from the angle between rider and bike that looks like the hands of a clock pointing to 12 and 6. LAZY FLIP A Backflip in which the rider, here it’s Dany Torres, lies back, flat on the seat, with his arms extended during the rotation. While he’s upside down, his body is parallel to the bike.
difficulty 1 ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ 5
difficulty 1 ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ 9
KISS OF DEATH INDY FLIP The basic Kiss of Death trick involves doing a handstand on the bike, while stretching down to kiss the front fender. It takes some skill, but to do it upside down and with an added Indy variation, where the rider scissors his legs out at angle, takes things to another level. Mat Rebeaud shows how it’s done.

DOUBLE HART ATTACK The origin of this trick is the Hart Attack, invented by FMX star Carey Hart. The rider holds the bike at the front and rear, kicking his legs outward. The Double Hart Attack adds an element of a Superman Double Grab, where the rider – in this case Levi Sherwood – performs the Hart Attack, but uses just the rear grip holes, which enables him to extend his legs much further away from the bike.

HART ATTACK INDY FLIP Why stop at an upright Hart Attack? Why not flip it, as Levi Sherwood shows? Plus, hoping for more points, the New Zealander adds an Indy kick, just because he can!
DEAD BODY FLIP For the Dead Body, the rider leans over the front of the bike, while holding the bars and keeping his body horizontal with the bike. Now, try that while flipping, like Levi Sherwood.
difficulty 1 ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ 10
difficulty 1 ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ 9
TSUNAMI The key to the Tsunami is to perform a handstand in the air, over the front of the handlebars, while keeping the bike as horizontal as possible, like Andre Villa. difficulty 1 ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ 7
DOUBLE GRAB INDY The standard Double Grab is straightforward enough: Dany Torres grabs the back of the motorcycle with both hands and extends his body off the back of the bike. An added Indy scissor kick lends a bit of flair to what, these days, is a relatively basic trick. difficulty 1 ■ ■ ■ ■ 4
PHOTOGRAPHY: Red bull content pool
CORDOVA FLIP With his hands on the grips, the rider brings his feet up underneath the bars, presses his knees to his chest, and then arches his back so that he is looking out over the back fender. All this while pulling a Backflip! Adam Jones was the first rider to land a Cordova in competition. This is Remi Bizouard’s spectacular take on the trick.
SUPERMAN INDIAN By modern standards, another relatively simple trick to pull off. The rider releases his feet from the foot pegs and extends his legs back, like Superman in flight. Mat Rebeaud adds the Indy variation for style. difficulty 1 ■ ■ ■ ■ 4

whipped Nine O’Clock Robbie Maddison pulls off a big extension of this trick, in which the rider holds the bike just by the handlebars. He aims to get his body to the nine o’clock position in relation to the bike. Robbie adds a whip too, kicking the bike out for added difficulty. difficulty 1 ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ 7
CHRIST AIR Similar to a Cliff Hanger – in which Robbie Maddison hooks his feet under the handlebars and extends his body straight up from the bike – the Christ Air adds the element of extending the arms out in a redeemer-like pose. difficulty 1 ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ 5
VOLT The big one from 2010, and the trick that helped Robbie Maddison to victory in the Madrid round. The rider dismounts and pirouettes his body through 360 degrees, before climbing on board again. Technically extremely difficult, the Volt definitely represents the future for FMX’s big-tricking superstars. difficulty 1 ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ 10
Tsunami FLIP Levi Sherwood performs a handstand on the handlebars while keeping the bike level. Sounds simple, right? But how about doing it upside down? difficulty 1 ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ 8

NINE O’CLOCK INDY As Josh Sheehan demonstrated in Rome, the rider’s aim here is to lift himself off the bike and extend his body at the 9 o’clock position. Requires good upper body strength. difficulty 1 ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ 7
STRIPPER FLIP While performing a Backflip, the rider puts one leg over the handlebars, while locking the other one behind the bars, as in a Cordova. Again, extension is the key here, and no one does extensions better than New Zealand’s Levi Sherwood. difficulty 1 ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ 8

MX requires a reasonable amount of upper body strength and a decent amount of flexibility. The courses in Red Bull X-Fighters are demanding and any mistakes can lead to serious injury, so I try to keep as fit as possible. That way I can think clearly through the whole run. I don’t have a set training routine as my days change a lot. I try to get a fair bit of riding done but if it’s wet season, I have to change my days around to fit in with riding. Some weeks I work in the foam pit, which can be really hard on the body. Trying new tricks often has you landing in awkward positions. I try get to a deep massage as often as I can, or I’ll go to see my local physio once a week when I’m home. She knows what I go through and what injuries I’ve had, so she knows what needs more work. She keeps the back, neck and shoulders nice and loose. When I’m at home, I have a foam roller and some rubber balls that are like a deep massage. I take two tennis balls with me everywhere I go to roll on and work out any knots or tight spots. They’re good for ‘glutes’, back, shoulders and neck. Every day I like to start with a warm-up and some cardio work. I mostly run for 20 or 30 minutes outdoors. If my body is sore or tight, I’ll have a slower, 10-minute jog or a less stressful cycle to loosen up. I then like to practice FMX for an hour or an hour-and-a-half in the mid-morning. If it’s wet or windy I’ll ride the Motocross track for a while. I rest in the middle of the day and eat a big healthy lunch. Then I’ll do whatever maintenance needs doing on the bike or on the track and jumps before heading out for another hour or so of FMX in the afternoon. When that’s all done with I’ll have a weights session. Sometimes my body is sore from riding, so I miss out a few parts of whatever programme I’m going to do, or I’ll change them to what I feel is needed at the time. Sometimes I swap the workout for run, or some stop-start sprints and jogging. On a normal week I’ll try to do the first gym session on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Then the second work out on Tuesday and Thursday. On Saturdays I usually just ride with friends, either FMX or Motocross. Sunday is mostly rest, with some stretching and a bit of fun time on the bike, mixing things up or a trail ride. If a competition is coming up or I’m out of practice, I often skip a gym session to get more practice on the bike. Then, before I fly to Europe or to the US from Australia, I like to run for half an hour to clear my body out. Depending on where I am at the time, gyms may be limited so I often change the workouts around. The day before an event or competition, I have a short treadmill warm up and some light weights to keep the body loose without any stress.
Weighing in
I alternate between workouts each day to cover all areas. One gym session might be two lots of 10, 6kg rotator cuff exercises with a sequence of in, out and up movements. Then I’ll do two repetitions of 10 bench presses of between 30 and 40kg. That will be followed by 10 pull-ups while holding my legs straight out at 90 degrees and a further five to 10 pull-ups moving the head in front of the bar. After that there’ll two lots of 10 shoulder raises with 8-12kg on each arm. I lie on my stomach and do 10 lifts at 6-8kg out sideways, with my elbows straight. Then I’ll do 10 squats to warm up, followed by 15 squats at 40kg and then 10 at 60kg. I mix up some shoulder exercises by lifting a medicine ball from the ground and throw it up in the air 10 times, and then do individual vertical punches with the ball.
Boxing Clever
Another gym session I do is a boxing routine. This involves five skipping sessions of three minutes with one-minute rests between each one. That’s followed by five, three-minute sessions with the punch bag, again with one-minute rests between each one. Then you do two lots of 30 push-ups and then 10-15 pull-ups with your legs straight out in front and two lots of five pull-ups with you head in front of the bar. After that you do three one-minute sessions of punching the air holding a 2-3kg dumb-bell in each hand, two lots of 30 sit-ups while holding your feet off the ground and twisting each time to touch an elbow on the opposite knee. You finish with 15 standing jumps starting in a squat position. Then you can have a rest!

Aussies Rule

From FMX superstar Robbie Maddison to a new generation of riders such as Josh Sheehan and Robbie Adelberg, the sport is being taken over by Australians. Red Bull X-Fighters regular Blake ‘Bilko’ Williams explains just what it is about Aussies that makes them ideal world tour material
Sporting Culture
This is a really important part of what Australians are about. We live our lives in the great outdoors most of the time and there aren’t too many built up areas, so as a kid you’re always going out in the paddock or whatever. You never sit round watching TV; you’re always looking for stuff to do, just getting your hands dirty. And your parents always encourage you to get into sport. And this is where that’s led me and Cam (Sinclair) and Maddo.
Down to Earth Attitude
Aussies are pretty good at this. You can’t just turn up somewhere and think you’re the man. You can go to Southern California maybe and be Australian and be cocky with the chicks and stuff – and that works pretty well – but you can’t do that at home. You get hauled back pretty quick. We tend to treat people with the respect we expect to get back. It helps in an environment like this (Red Bull X-Fighters). I think a lot people in the sport have respect for the Australians, not just in the way we ride but also in the way we conduct ourselves. We’re pretty grounded I think.”
37
Cameron Sinclair is one of FMX’s most consistent performers. Here he nails his signature Double Backflip.
Sense of humour
This is massively important. Aussies have got great humour, a really wide variety of humour. A lot of times there’ll be a lot of jokes being thrown around between me, Cam and Maddo and our mechanics and no-one will laugh except us, but we’ll laugh like crazy. Sometimes we do swear a little bit too much though… but never in front of the women and children!
Having a go
You’ll never get anywhere without a bit of this attitude. I never knew I was going to be successful in America. I spent a lot of my own money getting to X-Games the first year I went. I was invited and scraped together the money to go and even after prize money I still went home having made a loss. But I got a lot of sponsorship out of it and I knew I had a shot. I went back the next year, started making a little money and now I’m doing good there, despite coming from another country. Sometimes it doesn’t work out but you have to try. Otherwise you’d be sitting on couch in ten years time thinking ‘what if…’ That’s way too late. I want to be sitting back when I’m 40 thinking that I tried everything I could. That does extend to tricks as well, but only on the days when you’re feeling comfortable on the bike, feeling 100 per cent confident. If you’re a little bit skeptical, carrying an injury or have bike issues or 38

you’re just not comfortable on the course, then you have to say ‘today’s not the day to have a go’. That’s just down to common sense, which is probably another good Aussie trait.
Road warriors
Aussies are pretty good on the road. We can work our way out of any situation. When we come to Red Bull X-Fighters you’re pretty well looked after, but if all of us had to go on a road trip by ourselves I reckon the Aussies would be like ‘throw in some camping gear and we’ll figure it out as we go, we’re pretty good at winging it’.
Mates
Having your mates around is really important. Cam’s been my best mate since I was 14 or 15. We’d race Supercross together and started freestyle together. We’ve been all over the world and, especially when you’re traveling this much, being on 20-hour road trips and hotels and planes, it’s great to have mates with you. I’m not sick of him yet, though he’s pretty sick of me! It just great to have your mates there. There’s nothing worse than going to a foreign country on your own, stuck in a hotel room, with language barriers and feeling there’s nothing to do. I can make myself laugh but only so much!

Bike Most riders choose from manufacturers such as Yamaha, Suzuki and Honda. For Dany, though, it’s the KTM250 SX. “It’s the bike I feel most comfortable with, it’s like my second skin.” An FMX bike is largely the same as a regular-trials bike, but with a few key modifications: 1 Forks/Number Plate s: Riders cut the number plates to fix on grip tape, which helps them to clamp their feet to the forks during tricks like the Cliffhanger. 2 Pop-Up Bars: These are flip-up bars that, when extended, help a rider maintain balance by propping his arms against them for stability. Handholds: Cut-outs in the plastic 3 just beneath the seat provide space to hang on to during seat-grab tricks. Footpegs: Most riders go for wider 4 pegs, for greater stability.

It was also the site of one of Australia’s biggest shipyards of the 20th century. The first of its two dry docks was completed in 1857 but maritime activity ceased in 1922. The field limit for a competition is 12 riders. The six top riders from the final standings of the 2010 Tour immediately qualify to participate. The remaining six spots are given to Open Category riders. Four of these riders will be selected to compete by the 2011 Tour Rider Selection Committee. Two further Wild Card slots are made available to riders who, according to the organisers, will bring something special to the event. Beginning at the first event, up to four Open riders will be able to gain a spot at the following Tour event. If an Open rider is ranked in the 2011 Tour Top Six at the end of any Tour stop, he will automatically be invited to the next Red Bull X-Fighters event. Following the Qualifying round on Day Two, the six riders ranked highest in Qualifying automatically progress to Round Two of the main competition. The bottom six in Qualifying then battle it out in Round One of the main event on Day Three. In Round One, each rider has one run to impress the judges. The top two riders from Round One then progress to Round Two, where they are ranked as seeds #7 and #8. Then, they compete in head-to-head runs against the top six from Qualifying, who are seeded 1-6. In the head-to-head rounds, each rider gets another single run, the lower seed going first. A panel of five judges, presided over by the head judge, rules on categories including Variety (of tricks), Challenge and Execution, Form and Flow, Use of Course and Energy, Excitement and Entertainment.
