The Style of our Holiday Our Peru “journey” provides the perfect setting to step inside a world so fascinatingly different in many ways to our own. The history of the Inca Empire underpins our entire journey. We will immerse ourselves in the colour and excitement of present day Peru while exploring and learning about its fascinating history.

Back Track Crew

To ensure that we won’t be isolated from the local people, in all towns and cities, we mostly stay in family owned, small and comfortable hotels with private facilities. Breakfast is supplied daily and we will seek out interesting local restaurants for our lunch and dinner. Occasionally we provide a box lunch on days where we will not be able to purchase our own. If you join the trek to Machu Picchu, your accommodation for 3 nights will be in a spacious 2 person hiking tent with a comfortable mattress. All meals are provided and served in the dining tent complete with tables and chairs. All camp duties are handled by your trekking crew of cooks guides and porters. A bowl of hot water for washing is provided each morning and in the evening on arrival at camp. Our trekking style has been described as a “hotel on feet”. Another highlight of our journey is our overnight home stay with the Taquile Islanders. Our main transport throughout will be by private chartered comfortable coach. We may also use other appropriate transport when required including a passenger ferry, mini bus, and the tourist train back from Machu Picchu. This journey is suitable for anyone in good health, with sound fitness, a lively sense of fun and a spirit of adventure.

You will be escorted throughout your Peru adventure by, Franz Alarcón Zielinski who has vast experience leading tour groups in Peru and other Latin American countries. Besides speaking advanced level Spanish, German and English, Franz has fourteen years of experience as a tour leader, organizing, supervising and leading archaeological, cultural, nature and wildlife-watching, trekking and climbing trips in Peru. Franz is looking forward to sharing his knowledge and love for Peru with you. All our local guides and our trek crew are committed to providing friendly professional service. On the trek to Machu Picchu we will have a cook, guide and porters for support. In many of the major historical sights we will employ a specialist guide to explain the points of local interest. The High Road to Machu Picchu As part of Back Track’s 2015 Inca Empire, we have chosen to trek to Machu Picchu along a quieter, more scenic and varied alternative to the busy Inca Trail. This exhilarating trek is in the shadow of Apu Salkantay (In the local Quecha language, this translates as ‘Savage Mountain’) which, at 6271m, is the highest peak in the Vilcabamba Range; part of the mighty Andes. The Salkantay Trek, also known as the ‘High Road to Machu Picchu’ crosses over a 4,600m pass and travels from near the snowline into a lush tropical rainforest. Along the way we visit the unexcavated Inca ruins of Llactapata from where we get our first views of the legendary ‘Lost City of the Incas’, Machu Picchu. National Geographic magazine rates Salkantay as one of the 25 best treks in the world. DAY 1: LIMA Tour commences in Lima. You will be met at the airport and transferred to the Hotel Antigua Miraflores, located in the more affluent coastal area of Lima which offers trendy cafes, restaurants and exciting nightlife. If you are not on the same flight as the tour leader, you will meet your travelling companions and the tour leader at the hotel. Head out tonight to a nearby restaurant for dinner.

Peru - The Inca Empire DAY 2: LIMA We depart the hotel at 9.30AM, and drive to the colonial heart of the city. We tour the Plaza de Armas, the cathedral, and the San Francisco Church and catacombs. We include lunch at Al Fresco Restaurant, just off the plaza, a popular spot for Limeños. In the afternoon we visit the Gold Museum, and finish our tour visiting Barranco and the Bridge of Sighs. (BL)

DAY 3: AREQUIPA We are transferred to Lima Airport for flight check-in. Our destination is Arequipa “The White City” so called as its buildings shimmer in the sun, having been built from a local white volcanic rock. Arriving late afternoon we stay at La Casa del Melgar. Arequipa is Peru’s second most important city. (B)

DAY 4: AREQUIPA Today we explore this beautiful city on foot. The sites we will explore are all within easy walking distance from our hotel. On the list to see is the sensational Convent of Santa Catalina. It is “picture post card” beautiful, offers a respite from the outside world and view into a bygone way of life. Also on the list is the Museo de Santuarios Andinos, aka “the mummy museum” and La Compania Church. We return to our hotel and a then enjoy a night out in Arequipa. (B)

DAY 5: CHIVAY The scenery today is sensational as we head for the Colca Canyon. The beautiful snow capped El Misti 5822m (19,096ft) provides a spectacular back drop and we have every chance of viewing the

Inca Empire - South America - 2015

“King of the Andes” - the mighty Condor. We stay tonight at Hosteria Pozo del Cielo in the small town of Chivay at the entrance to Colca Canyon. (BL)

DAY 6: PUNO The Colca canyon is a spectacular natural wonder. A half day exploring the canyon, with the raging river over 1200m below. Alpacas and Llamas are often seen here. If we have time we will visit the hot springs within easy walking distance of our hotel to rejuvenate tired muscles. In the afternoon drive to Puno, overnight in La Hacienda Plaza. (B)

DAY 7: 08 TAQUILE ISLAND Early this morning we transfer down to the port and take our charter cruise via the Uros Islands to our overnight stop on Taquile Island. The Uros Indians live on floating reed islands and even tourism has not eased their poverty. Small souvenirs purchased here will help them immensely. Taquile is famous for its tranquility and believers in the powers of crystals travel here for it’s thought that this island and others in Lake Titicaca have unique mystical significance. On Taquile Island we stay overnight in the homes of the Islanders and enjoy their hospitality. (BLD)

DAY 8: PUNO We have all the morning to explore the island before we take our charter boat back to Puno and overnight at La Hacienda Plaza. (BL)

DAY 9: CUSCO We drive across the high plains to the ancient capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco. We stay in the centrally located, Casa Andina Koricancha for 2 nights. A short walk down the lanes of the old city takes us into the main plaza, a fascinating hub of activity where we will select a suitable restaurant to celebrate our arrival in the Incan Capital. (BL)

DAY 10: CUSCO. In the morning we have a trek orientation meeting for the Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu. After the meeting we head out on a walking tour of the old city. The afternoon is free time. (B)

DAY 11. SORAYPAMPA (TREK DAY 1) Trek day 1 - 3 hours drive, 6 hours trekking We have an early departure from Cusco for the 3 hour drive to the town of Mollpata (2900m) where we’ll pause for a short break before continuing to the end of the road at Saylapatta (3450m). Here we meet our ‘arrieros’ the horse wranglers who will accompany us on the trek; their sturdy mountain ponies and mules will carry our luggage and the camp supplies and equipment. We begin today’s trek along the Rio Blanca valley before ascending steadily to a high plateau. We’ll have amazing views of Nevado Huamantay (5917m) and Apu Salkantay (6271m) as were near our high camp at Soraypampa (3850m).(BLD)

DAY 12. PAMPACAHUANA Trek day 2 - 8 hours trekking After leaving camp the trek ascends a section of switchbacks known as Siete Culebras (7 Snakes) before reaching the trek’s highest point, Salkantay Pass (4600m). From the pass we’ll have views of the snow peaks of Apu Salkantay and Nevado Huamantay and several glaciers. This is the natural habitat of Peru’s largest bird, the Andean Condor. Descending through cloud forest from the highpoint we pass the high attitude lake of Laguna Salkantaycocha before reaching a suitable spot for a rest and lunch. After lunch we continue to Pampacahuana (2800m), located next to an original Inca canal, where we set our camp and spend the night. (BLD)

Page 6 | Back Track Adventures

DAY 13. LA PLAYA Trek day 3 - 6 hours trekking Today marks a notable transition from the cooler, higher altitudes to the warmth of low altitudes. Descending steadily we enter the zone of ‘Ceja de Selva’ (Eyebrow of the Jungle), marking the high jungle area. Soon this becomes fertile farm land with plantations of tropical fruits, coffee and coca. Keep an eye out for orchids plus parrots and lurid coloured butterflies. Our campsite at La Playa (The Beach) has a kiosk where snacks and cold drinks are for sale. (BLD)

DAY 14. AGUAS CALIENTAS Trek day 1 - 20 minutes drive, 6 hours trekking An early start is needed to this long day. After breakfast we board a bus for a short journey by road to the village of Lucmabamba (2500m). From here we commence trekking with an ascent to the ancient Inca ruins of Llactapata (2700m). From this dramatically situated site we get our first views of the ‘Lost City of the Incas’, Machu Picchu. Following a lunch break there’s a steep descent to Hidroelectrica on the floor of the Rio Vilcanota Valley. From here it’s an easy 2 hour walk along the valley to our hotel in Aguas Calientas. Tonight we stay at the Killa Inn in the small township of Aguas Calientes deep in the valley directly below Machu Picchu. (BD)

DAY 15: CUSCO This morning we will have a complete guided tour of the main site of Machu Picchu. After lunch and last minute exploring in Aguas Calientes, we catch the train and bus back to Cusco arriving late evening and the Casa Andina Koricancha for 2 nights. (B)

DAY 16: CUSCO This is a free day in Cusco. Catch up on your sleep, washing, buy souvenirs or just relax in a café in the main Plaza area and watch the world go by. (B)

DAY 17: Depart cusco If you are departing Cusco today, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight check-in. (B)
