Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 24, Issue 4 | 23rd February 2024

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Year Group Parent Information Evenings that teachers and parents have enjoyed have concluded this week with the Year 7 and Year 8 parents enjoying a glorious Woollahra rooftop experience as the weather cleared on both days, allowing us to enjoy fantastic sunsets, good company, refreshments, and the sharing of relevant information to ease the road ahead. I thank all the parents who attended these evenings and for those who could not participate, your information packs were sent home with your child.

Spirit Week on the Bondi Campus concluded yesterday with the dodgeball tournament, which was postponed twice due to rain. The teachers vs students game was the highlight of the event, and the winners on the day were the teachers, according to the teachers. The students also claimed victory, so it was decided that the game was tied, with the enjoyment of the day being the winner.

Congratulations to Kai Johns on his organisation of the event and perseverance in the presence of weather delays.

The students raised $1000 for the HeartKids Foundation, supporting and advocating for children impacted by childhood heart disease my thanks to all involved.

The HSC 2023 Showcases were launched last week, and our Artists attended Art Express, the Dance students, Callback, the Drama students, and OnStage. The Music students will attend Encore at the Sydney Opera House in March.

Liz Collier-Walsh commented on their experience, “I thought I would just tell you how we went at Callback last week. Last Friday, I took the current Year 12 Dance students to the Seymour Centre to see Callback. It was an extra special excursion as Zach Simmons' Core Composition, 'Tetris,' was performed by Giulia Goldman (current Year 12 Dance student) as part of the program. The show consisted of the best performances and compositions from last year's HSC Dance Practical examinations and an array of outstanding young talent. Watching our Reddam students be included among this elite group of artists was an honor. Zach's choreography was a show highlight with his unique and clever style, perfectly performed by Giulia. The whole experience left our newest HSC Dance cohort motivated and inspired. A great day.”

In Science this week, the Year 8 students are excited about experiments. They have been completing various experiments relating to biology, chemistry, and physics content this term. For biology, they tested different independent variables, from how sugar affects the rate of cellular respiration to how temperature does. They were all very successful and managed to obtain exceptional results.

Mr Le Bescont is also excited about the senior Physics Laboratory that he has created, which is now fit for purpose and used effectively.

Our Year 10 Dance class travelled to Riverside Theatres to see Bangarra Dance Theatre’s latest production, Yuldea. Choreographed by Artistic Director, Frances Rings, the Work ‘ awakens the earth and the sky worlds to tell the story of the Aṉangu people of the Great Victoria Desert.’ It was an incredible display of traditional and contemporary dance, elevated by an outstanding production design that told a captivating story.

In Year 10, students study Bangarra Dance Theatre and learn about the history, style and creative process of the company so this excursion was an incredible opportunity for the students to witness Bangarra’s unique and magical artistry first hand.

On the sports front:

I congratulate our 1st Boys Basketball Team on their outstanding achievement last Friday at the CDSSA Open Basketball Championships. The team went through the day undefeated and held their nerve in the Final to bring home the gold medal.

Following the U16 and Open Basketball Championships, where Reddam played in 3 out of the 4 Finals, we are pleased to congratulate the following students on their selection in CDSSA Teams that will compete at the AICES Basketball Championships.

Great news from Manama, Bahrain, where Sophia Glasson won a historic women’s foil individual BRONZE medal at the Asian Cadet Fencing Championships last weekend.

Some tough fighting victories (15-10 Taipei, 15-6 Oman, 15-10 Japan, 15-10 Korea) saw her reach the podium and remain in Olympic Games contention for the Australian team. Fantastic result, Sophia.

Congratulations to Jazz Spira. Last weekend, Jazz and her horse Rosthwaite Balouchi competed at the GDP Grand Prix Show in Victoria, where she competed against some of the top junior riders in the country. She produced some beautiful, consistent, clear rounds, with a ribbon and victory lap on Saturday and placing in the top 10 on both days. Great riding, Jazz.

Next week sees the first of the Music Evenings with the Welcome Recital All are welcome to attend Adelaide Hall on Monday at 7:00 pm.

The Swimming Carnival is on Wednesday, and students from Years 7, 8, and 9 must attend. Students from Years 10, 11 and 12 can attend or attend school for normal timetabled lessons. Classes for Years 10, 11, and 12 will run as usual. Buses will depart from Woollahra at approximately 9.00 am. Bondi students should come straight from home to Woollahra. Students are to come dressed in Reddam Sports uniform with the House T-Shirt.

Welcome Recital

Please join us on Monday evening, at 7pm in Adelaide Hall. We will be hosting our first event for the year, the Welcome Recital. Talented students and ensembles will perform some exceptional works, and all are welcome to attend. We will be featuring solo works, duets, groups, bands and ensembles from right across the school, Year 7 to Year 12. We hope to see you there to support our exceptional young musicians!

About the What Matters? Writing Competition 2024

Inspired by Gough Whitlam's commitment to involving young people in shaping Australia's future, the What Matters? writing competition is currently open to school students in years 5 to 12 from Australia. Responding to the simple question 'What matters?', entrants are free to express their views on any matter they care about.

Part writing exercise, part civics and citizenship activity, What Matters? is the perfect opportunity to empower students to raise their voices on issues that are important to them and know that their perspectives are valuable, no matter their age, background or viewpoint. Entries can be fiction, nonfiction, poetry or prose of up to 600 words, and submitted online.

Following on from its inaugural History Tour in 2019 to Russia, Germany and Italy, and the enormously successful April 2023 tour to Germany, Italy and Türkiye, the Reddam House History Department is launching The History Tour France, Germany and Italy for April 2025.

The tour is in the 3-week holiday period after Term 1 2025.

We are hosting a Parent Student Information Evening at the Bondi Campus, on Wednesday 6th March at 6.45.

The itineraries are closely aligned with the senior Modern and Ancient syllabuses; however, it is not a requirement that participating students study History. All students are welcome.

Applications open for the Hansen Scholarship Program, 2025 entry

The Hansen Scholarship Program aspires to nurture and significantly expand the horizons of Australian students who may otherwise struggle to access a high-quality university education through fully funded accommodation at Little Hall, tailored mentoring and extracurricular activities, and focused financial support.

Current Year 12 students across Australia who plan to begin their undergraduate degree at UniMelb in Semester 1, 2025 are encouraged to review the eligibility and selection criteria and start on their application. Those who apply before 3 March 2024 will have the opportunity to receive feedback on their application and resubmit by the closing date of 3 April 2024.

December and January offer round 1 outcomes

We're thrilled to share that we've offered 2,328 domestic undergraduate students a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) in the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) January offer round 1. We also offered 5,953 places in the December offer round, an increase of 956 offers on the same time last year.

The December offer round includes 1,103 offers to our inaugural Narrm Scholarship candidates, while 42 per cent of our overall domestic December round offers went to applicants eligible for Access Melbourne, our Special Entry Access Scheme.

In December, we awarded Victoria’s highest-achieving VCE students with a Melbourne Chancellor’s Scholarship to study with us in 2024.

The Melbourne Chancellor’s Scholarship is one of our most prestigious awards for school leavers, offering a generous fee exemption, as well as a guaranteed CSP in their preferred graduate program, including the Doctor of Medicine and Juris Doctor (Law).

The Scholarship is offered to school-leaver applicants who have satisfied prerequisites (and any extra requirements) and achieved an ATAR or equivalent of 99.9 or above, with concessions for Bachelor of Music applicants and Indigenous students.View article

Applications opening for the Hansen Scholarship Program

Current Year 12 students who have a demonstrated outstanding academic success, a resilience to adversity and a commitment to helping others within their community are encouraged to apply from 5 February 2024. Applications close 3 April.

The Hansen Scholarship Program is worth $108,000. Key benefits include a tailored academic and mentorship program and free accommodation at Little Hall residence for the duration of their three-year undergraduate degree.

We are excited to welcome 222 Year 12 students who have received offers for the 2024 University of Melbourne Extension Program, across 16 subject areas. Mathematics was the most popular subject, which is taught across seven School Centres and the Centre for Higher Education Studies (CHES).

The Extension Program is for high-achieving students looking to further their academic potential. It's free to join and through the program students are able to study university subjects alongside their final year of high school.
