Student Achievements

Dear Parents and Caregivers, There was much excitement among our students this past week. The Oz Opera incursion on Wednesday provided a very special insight into the sometimesconfusing world of opera. Their production of Cinderella was the perfect way to engage a young audience and to show how appealing opera can be, even for school children. A thoroughly good time was had by all, and we really appreciated the visit from Oz Opera, which has been missed over the past couple of years because of the pandemic. Congratulations are due to our choirs, who took part in the Sydney Eisteddfod at the Concourse Concert Hall in Chatswood, as well as to our cross country runners who participated in the ASISSA Championships in Queens Park yesterday. Both events saw our students excel and keep the Reddam House flag flying high. My sincere thanks to Mr Copper and to Mr and Mrs Bortolotti for all their additional organisation this week in sport and choir. Next Wednesday is the Finals of the Instrumental Competition, the culmination of many hours of practising and perfecting musical pieces. We wish all of our musicians everything of the best and know that the audience is in for a treat as our students show off their musical prowess. Enjoy the weekend! Dee Pitcairn Principal

SYDNEY EISTEDDFOD

On Thursday, 350 Reddam students visited the Concourse Concert Hall in Chatswood to compete in the Sydney Eisteddfod. There was great excitement in the air, as our choirs have not performed publicly and at an eisteddfod since 2019. All of our Reddam students were fine ambassadors and well prepared, and had a wonderful day performing in a professional venue and listening to other choirs their age. Our Year 5-6 Singers were rewarded with 2nd place in the Open Primary Choirs section, with Year 3-4 Sculthorpe Choir placing third. The Year 2 Bunyips Choir placed third in the K-4 Choirs section, with our youngest students, the K-1 Gumnuts, receiving a Highly Commended award from esteemed adjudicator Brett Weymark. We look forward to the next performances from our talented singers!

KINDERGARTEN

We had yet another fun and exciting week in Kindergarten as we got to enjoy an amazing performance of Cinderella, presented by singers from Opera Australia. The colours of their costumes were so vibrant and the musical notes they sang were captivating! In English this week we used our knowledge of all the sounds we have learnt so far to form our own sentences. We used the text ‘Where the Forest Meets the Sea’ to give us ideas on what we could write our sentences about. This allowed us to connect our learning from our history and geography topic to our writing lessons. We learnt about what subtraction means during our maths lessons this week. We used concrete materials including play doh and counters to solve subtraction problems. The students demonstrated what it means to take away and how to find the answer by counting what is left. We then started to use number lines to learn the counting back strategy. During our PDH lessons this week we got to know the character ‘Pete Persistence’ from our ‘You Can Do It’ program. He taught us that mistakes are ok, in fact they are important for us to learn and get better at lots of things we do each day.

YEAR 1

This wet week was the perfect weather for our Science investigations which focused on the cycle of rain, and creating weather gauges to measure rainfall. We explored rain and clouds in a hands-on and engaging way through the ‘Rain Cloud in a Jar’ science experiment. The children hypothesised before the experiment about what they thought would happen. When they participated in the experiment they discovered that as the colored water saturated the “cloud”, it gets heavy and eventually is so heavy that it can no longer hold the water. It “rains” down into the jar – through the “air.” The looks on their faces said it all!

In English we continued our exploration of procedural texts, and the children wrote their own procedure for how to make an ice cream sundae. We also looked at the sequence of the story ‘Oi, Get Off My Train’ by John Burningham, and explored and discussed some of the sad things happening to the animals of our world.

YEAR 1 In maths we looked at time to the hour, and half hour, on

both analogue and digital clocks. The children made their own cardboard analogue clocks so that they could model different times, and have hands-on experience of the two different hands, and where they need to point to represent different times.

In history and geography we explored the difference between

‘goods’

‘services’,

and

landmarks

and

explored

around

the

world. We also related the landmarks to our visit to Darling Harbour last week, and

discussed

our

own

experience with some of the world’s most unique landmarks in the city in

which we all live. We were delighted by the ‘Cinderella’ incursion by Opera Australia which we got to experience on Wednesday afternoon. The costumes and scenery were spectacular!

YEAR 2 This week has certainly been an exciting one for the Year 2 students! We thoroughly enjoyed the ‘Cinderella’ performance by Opera Australia. In class the students were fascinated to learn that Cinderella is in fact a multicultural story with more than 850 versions from all over the globe. This connected with our unit of work in history and geography as well as English where we were able to discuss a variety of adjectives that would enable us to construct interesting character descriptions. The children were engaged in a discussion about the elements of a story and these features will be further explored as the students independently construct texts adhering to these features. Science activities this week involved being creative whilst investigating the process of the Water Cycle. The students were enthusiastic when constructing a “Water Cycle in a Bag”. This also provided an opportunity to understand the importance of conservation of water as a precious resource. In maths the students have been revising the different strategies they have learnt for subtraction and addition. They have solved a range of problems using two-digit numbers and the students are learning the importance of showing each step of their working-out, the sum and their answer.

YEAR 2 This week the focus in geography has been to explore the features of a globe. The children were keen to locate our continent on Google Earth. We are becoming quite adept at locating the seven continents and five oceans. In lessons we learned how to label the globe correctly and discussed the various cultural connections around the world. The children had so much fun creating their very own globes! The Year 2 students definitely delighted in the opportunity to perform at the Eisteddfod. Their enthusiasm was infectious throughout the week, and they are commended for a wonderful performance.

YEAR 3 The classroom was buzzing with excitement this week, especially during public speaking lessons! The students were tasked with the challenge of selling a real or imaginary product of their own choice. Of course, many couldn’t turn down the opportunity to solve those niggling problems they face on a day-to-day basis, like losing their stationery, forgetting items of clothing, or completing their homework. To do this, some students invented devices that would help with these common debacles. After posing a rhetorical question to get their audience engaged, each student listed some tantalising features that would make their product too alluring to turn down. By the end of hearing about these wonderfully, creative ideas, each speaker had their classmates wondering: What would life be like, if these products actually existed?!

We can’t wait to hear the practiced and polished speeches next week! In addition to going on a selling spree, Year 3 also became geologists, exploring how every rock tells a story, during science lessons this week. Students were eager to find out how rocks could paint a picture of how the Earth’s surface has changed. From Strata rock that resembles a layered cake, to Basalt rock that exposes volcanic activity in that region, students learnt that these, often disregarded, objects are far more interesting than first thought!

YEAR 4 In Science, as part of our Term 2 unit of study, Year 4 have been asking “How can we package it better?” This question has allowed students to investigate a range of different materials and their varying properties. First, students examined “absorbency”. Absorbency is the quality or state of being able to draw in or soak up liquid. This became an interesting example of how life can imitate art – as this experiment helped prepare us for this week’s downpour! Students learnt that plastic was waterproof, tissue was absorbent but could deteriorate easily and Chux was incredibly absorbent. Our second experiment included investigating “impact”. Impact is the action of one object coming forcibly into contact with another. By reducing the amount of impact, we can make sure that the fragile items within our package can remain intact. One way that students were able to reduce the amount of impact was by wrapping items in bubble wrap. The air pockets in bubble wrap act as a cushion, which lowers the amount of impact. Finally, students wrote an experiment on fragility. Fragility is the quality of being easily broken or damaged. Some materials such as paper and tissue are incredibly fragile. That means that they break easily and can be destroyed. However, other materials can be sturdy and lasting, such was wood and metal. Materials have a wealth of properties and are suitable for different purposes. See if you can find a different purpose for some of your everyday materials and make this world a more interesting place.

YEAR 5 & 6 ENGLISH Year 5 English This week in English, Year 5 students learned about visual literacy and were introduced to the wide range of terms we use in English to describe visual texts, from graphic novels to films. Students used their new technical language to read and make meaning from two delightful storybooks about refugees: The Journey, and The Little Refugee. In addition to their regular grammar and spelling studies, students considered the notion of “home”, what home means to us, and what it might be like to be forced to leave a home and country that has become dangerous, and to flee for a place of greater safety. Year 6 English This week in English, Year 6 students consolidated their skills in analysing the visual and textual elements of advertisements. Students have become quite comfortable throwing around terms such as ethos, pathos, slogan, framing, colour, contrast, vector and angle, and they can tell the difference between a headline, a logo and logos. They also worked on their persuasive writing skills, by revising the structure of a persuasive essay. In addition to their regular grammar and spelling studies, students pretended to be advertising executives and constructed persuasive paragraphs to convince their client of the effectiveness of their new public health advertisement.

PUBLIC SPEAKING

This week in public speaking, Year 5 students have been busy writing their poems for presentation. We have been discussing the difference between personification, similes and metaphors, and seeing how we can bring everyday subjects to life through imaginative language. Please enjoy the following first drafts...

YEAR 5 & 6 SCIENCE In science this week year 6 students explored three different types of microbes. They studied the microbes sizes, structure, shape, how they affect the body and what some diseases are called that are made from the type of microbe. Students have also considered the many different ways microbes can enter the body and how microbes can be transmitted from person to person.

In science this week year 5 students have used all their knowledge of plant and animal adaptations to create their own creation with unique adaptations for its environment. Students also considered how their creation might have evolved and adapted over time so its species survived. Year 5 students have also carried out a practical around Darwin's finches. Students investigated if the different shaped beaks of finches affects what they can eat. From this investigation students were able to gain a clearer understanding for evolution and natural selection, because if a finch species was not well adapted to its environment it would die out.

In science club students carried out their second dissection of the year. This time students dissected lungs and a kidney. Students were able to gain an understanding of the structure of lungs and kidneys and how they operate in the human body.

MUSIC The K-2 students experienced the wonderful performance of Opera Australia's 'Cinderella' this week. They were dazzled by the powerful singing, the vibrant costumes, and the colourful staging. Students were delighted to be able to hear each of the pieces we have studied in class performed live and in the context of Rossini's version of the story. They also enjoyed contributing to the audience participation aspects of the show.

Years 5 and 6 put their aural analysis skills to the test in their listening assessment, each having a different pop song to analyse. They developed their understanding of Concepts of Music and the associated musical vocabulary. Year 3 and 4 continued their xylophone arrangements of 'Wonder' and 'Shotgun', with classes performing for their recorded assessments. Year 5 continued their Viva La Vida class arrangements using their own instruments, xylophones and also mini keyboards. After the last few weeks of lessons, the class performances sounded brilliant! We are so proud of the students for their hard work in music!

YEAR 5 & 6 MATHEMATICS Year 5 mathematicians identified and created geometric and number sequences. They described patterns, and relationships contained in sequences, using words such as’ terms’, ‘increase and decrease,’ ‘double and halve.’ Students revised and used the term-to -term rule or recursive rule – a rule that defines the value of each term in a sequence when the previous terms are known. They found the next term in the pattern by performing one or more operations, sometimes having to work backwards. Furthermore, they created geometric patterns, using concrete materials. They interpreted explanations written by their peers which described these patterns. Special number sequences, like the Fibonacci sequence, square and triangular numbers were revisited, and students listed and found common numbers within these sequences.

In Year 6 our students connected the value of a particular term in a pattern with its position in the pattern. Using function tables and understanding the position - to - term rule, they explained and reasoned that the function rule is extremely useful as it allows any term to be calculated without needing to find the value of the previous term. Year 6 mathematicians went further and plotted the coordinates from their table of values on a Cartesian Plane. They compared their different lines, with special attention given to the gradient of the variety of straight lines they constructed.

MUSIC PERFORMANCE The highlight of this week was undoubtedly the Sydney Eisteddfod, which you can read about earlier in this newsletter. We are so proud of the hard work of all our choirs and what they achieved. Next week we hold our Instrumental Competition Finals on Wednesday June 1 at 7pm in Adelaide Hall. Our community is invited to attend and support our talented musicians, which will include a special performance by the Reddam House String Orchestra, who are also due to perform at the Sydney Eisteddfod next week.

Year 5-6 Drumline

The Year 5-6 Drumline continues to grow and get accustomed to working as a crack unit. This is by far the biggest group we’ve ever had and with a broad skill base involving some of our piano players too it’s an exciting period for this ensemble. The students have been learning a lot about teamwork within an ensemble setting, and it’s always great to witness them develop their technical skills as they learn to listen to each other whilst focussing on their own rhythmic precision at the same time. It will be exciting to see what we can produce with this enlarged squad! Primary School Jazz Band

The Primary School Jazz Band has been going from strength to strength so far this year. The students have been getting more comfortable improvising and learning how to build their solo skills. The band has also been expanding its repertoire, working on some more challenging arrangements of jazz standards like Blue Train and Autumn Leaves. They are looking forward to performing for their peers at the end of this term!
