Reddam House High School Newsletter

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Year 12 students have started their HSC Finals. The five Dance students had the NESA examiners come and mark their course's practical components on Thursday. Emily Knight says that they excelled and were all happy with their performances.

Next up for the Final Practical marking are the Drama students in week six and the Music students in week eight. It is such a busy time for them as they are also about to start their Trial Examinations next week.

The French students complete their Aural Examination this Saturday. The end is in sight for them, and they are an extremely motivated group excited by what lies ahead. This week, I have concluded my interviews with all of the Year 12 students, and I am encouraged by their attitude and determination to succeed.

Year 12 Business Studies classes visited Taronga Zoo for their marketing study. This annual event is something the students really look forward to, as most of them haven’t been to the zoo since they were in primary school.

The day began with the Seal Show, which emphasized the importance of ocean sustainability and encouraged everyone to consider sustainable seafood choices. The seals were entertaining and captivating, adding a touch of magic to the experience. A few students also attended the Bird Show, where they were amazed by the sight of native birds flying freely.

The group then participated in marketing sessions in the Natural Living Classrooms. These sessions provided insights into the zoo’s target markets and the marketing techniques used to increase sales and customer awareness. They also learned about the zoo’s role as a modern Noah’s Ark, with its research center preserving the DNA of many Australian plants and animals.

Following the sessions, the students explored various parts of the zoo, including the new snake enclosures, the elephants, meerkats, the tiger exhibition, and the African wildlife.

Overall, it was a fantastic day for the students to experience their last excursion together and see their theoretical lessons come to life.

Our recent Art Retreat for the Year 9 artists to Chowder Bay and Cockatoo Island was an unforgettable experience. Students had a fantastic time immersing themselves in creative activities, including landscape drawing sessions that captured the breathtaking beauty of the bay, filmmaking workshops

that brought their own stories to life, and vibrant lorikeet birds in colour pencil workshops. They also explored the architectural marvels of Cockatoo Island, investigating its unique structures while honing their camera craft and mastering angles for the perfect shots. The retreat was filled with fun, learning, and incredible artistic growth, inspiring and energising everyone.

Year 11 students of PDHPE completed their first aid practical training all day on Monday. They are now certified first-aiders and have the skills and training to step in and help in any emergency. What an excellent component of their course. They join all the teachers who have also undergone this training as a mandatory requirement for being a teacher in NSW.

The Athletics Carnival on Wednesday went ahead despite the inclement weather. Bella Kable shared, “What an epic day out at ES Marks on Wednesday. The rain did not stop any of our athletes, with 11 school records being broken. Darling came out of the blocks fast, leading the charge from the start of the day and maintaining it. Bennelong and Macquarie fought for 2nd and 3rd, with Bennelong beating them to the silver medal. Thank you to our amazing teachers for recording and officiating in the rain all day.”

Gemma Squadrito reports on another fantastic weekend of Netball, "Reddam Netball continues to excel as we approach the final stages of the season! Last Saturday, the girls demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship, resilience, and determination in all games. Their hard work in sports lessons and training truly shone through as they faced their opponents. All teams' smooth transitions down the court and

excellent teamwork were standout features of the day. Our camaraderie as a school club is stronger than ever, which was evident in the way they supported each other through every match. The girls’ unwavering spirit and focus were key to our success. We are so eager to see them continue this momentum into the upcoming games and final standing matches!

Congratulations to Ruby Levitt who won the 'Fill Your Boots' competition, a local event organized by Waverly Council. Her standout performance in this community contest earned her top honors.

The HSC Music Recital on Monday night in Adelaide Hall from 7:00pm for the Year 12 Musicians to showcase a selection of the repertoire they will perform for the HSC markers in Week 8.

The Middle School Art Showcase is on Wednesday night from 6.30 - 8m to view all the works created on the Art Retreat and the classwork of the art students in the Middle School.

Reddam Concert Band

Our senior concert band has been coming along leaps and bounds this year. Consisting of Trombones, Trumpets, Saxophones, Flutes and Clarinets, our highly talented group has been rehearsing on Monday afternoons for our upcoming performance on the 10th of September. We’ll be performing Hugh M. Stuart’s piece ‘Three Ayers for concert band’ which has been a great developmental challenge for the band and is sounding fantastic. The rest of the year we’ll be working on Danny Elfman’s piece ‘Music for a darkened theatre', which is a big challenge for the group. We would welcome some extra percussionists for this piece - if any of you are interested, please see Mr Kempton or Mr Bortolotti.

Congratulations to superstar Year 10 band Lunchbox (Idan Olovitz, Hugo Nicolau Borde Bergeret, Gilly Baum and Sam Daniels) for their incredible performance in the Boom Clash Rockstar Finals on Saturday evening. A clear audience favourite, the group has gone from strength to strength in their performance skills, musicality and songwriting. Although not awarded as winners, they did receive a special commendation award of recording studio time, which the students are unbelievably excited for. Please

Some of our senior voice students enjoyed a concert at the Sydney Opera House on the weekend with their teachers, where they were privileged to hear one of the world's leading tenors, Freddie De Tommaso, in recital. The students were able to learn a lot about performance practice, technique and style, and we look forward to future events.

Reddam House is excited to be offering students an immersive-learning expedition to Sri Lanka in July 2025.

This is a life-changing opportunity for students to explore Sri Lanka with expert guides while developing their life skills, confidence, and independence, as well as complete community service. We’re partnering with World Challenge to offer this 13-night trip, which complements school learning and can be used towards points for the Duke Of Edinburgh award. The trip will be open to students in Years 8-11.

Although many students apply directly to institutions for early offers, please remind them that not all institutions make early offers and not every course is available through these schemes. They should always aim for their dream course, even if it is not part of an early offer scheme.

A few things to note:

• International students will be able to apply from 17 April. They need to select 'International application' from the 'Apply or log in' drop-down on the UAC website.

• All IB students can now complete a UAC application as we have received their student data from the IBO.

• All interstate students should wait until 1 August to apply as UAC won't receive their student data until later in the year. I'll let you know if this changes.

Course preferences

While applications are open, please remind your students that not all courses are available to select within their application. However, they can still submit an application with at least one preference and then come back later to list additional courses when they become available.

Universities have until 1 August to have all 2025 courses available for selection in the application.

Starting an application: essential info

This year, students need the following details to start their UAC application:

Personal email address: For security reasons, when students start their application they will need to register with a personal email address and a password. They'll then be sent an email to validate their details. Once they've done that, they will use their email address and password to log in to their application.

Year 12 student number and UAC PIN: NSW and ACT students – We emailed UAC PINs to NSW and ACT students on 3 April using the email addresses NESA and ACT BSSS have on file. If any students didn't receive this email, please ask them to call UAC. Also remind them to register a personal email address in their NESA Students Online account.

Interstate and IB students: These students also need to enter their Year 12 student number and UAC PIN. Their UAC PIN is their date of birth: DDMM.

Students need to enter their Year 12 student number and UAC PIN early in the application. These details identify them as a 2024 Year 12 student, which means they'll be able to apply for an early offer through the Schools Recommendation Scheme.

Unique Student Identifier (USI): At the request of institutions, this is now a mandatory field for domestic applicants who are Australian citizens. Students can quickly and easily create their USI or check if they already have one.

Handy tip – if you are not sure whether your student is eligible through Gateway Admission Pathway, you can get them to begin an application in the Gateway Application Portal and input their address – it will tell you whether they are eligible before progressing.

UNSW College Diplomas

Applications to study a Diploma will open in 2025, with the first intake expected in Term 1, 2026. A Diploma program is an alternative pathway for students who don't achieve the ATAR needed for direct entry to a UNSW degree. In the meantime, we will continue to offer UNSW Diplomas to eligible Gateway Admissions Pathway students. The UNSW College team will be visiting schools in the coming months to give you more information.

What are the event timings?

Each Discovery Day runs from 10am to 2pm.

Where do we meet?

The meeting point is at the UTS Tower Building 1, Level 4 Foyer (15 Broadway, Ultimo) at 10am. Schools are required to organise their own way to the meeting point.

Can students attend by themselves?

No, students must be accompanied by a staff member. We encourage subject teachers or careers advisers to identify and accompany interested students.

Is lunch provided?

Lunch is not provided. Participants are welcome to bring their own or explore the various dining options around campus, including the UTS Food Court and Central Park Mall during their 45 minute lunch break.

Is there a cost to participate?

The event is free of charge, offering an accessible opportunity for all students.

• The Bachelor of Social Science has been renamed the Bachelor of Social Sciences and is designed to build skills across all areas of social sciences through core units.

Our teacher education has been reimagined and we are pioneering an innovative suite of new education degrees that is set to reshape teacher education in Australia. Our new suite of education degrees commence in Session 1, 2025 and replace a number of existing degrees:

• The Bachelor of Education (Primary) and Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Education (Primary) and Bachelor of Psychology will both now be replaced with the Bachelor of Education (Primary)

• The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education (Secondary); the Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Education (Secondary); and the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education (Secondary) will now be replaced with the Bachelor of Education (Secondary)

• The Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) and Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education (Primary) majoring in Early Childhood Education will be replaced with the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary)

• The Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) will be replaced with the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood)

Other courses:

1. The Bachelor of Cognitive and Brain Science will no longer be offered from Session 2, 2024. It is recommended students consider the Bachelor of Psychology or the Bachelor of Medical Sciences with the major in Neuroscience. Those students interested in further research can also consider the Master of Research following their undergraduate study.

2. Students can now undertake a second major from another faculty within certain degrees as part of the flexible zone. The available majors are listed within the course structure page.

Applications open for the Hansen Scholarship Program, 2025 entry

The Hansen Scholarship Program aspires to nurture and significantly expand the horizons of Australian students who may otherwise struggle to access a high-quality university education through fully funded accommodation at Little Hall, tailored mentoring and extracurricular activities, and focused financial support.

Current Year 12 students across Australia who plan to begin their undergraduate degree at UniMelb in Semester 1, 2025 are encouraged to review the eligibility and selection criteria and start on their application. Those who apply before 3 March 2024 will have the opportunity to receive feedback on their application and resubmit by the closing date of 3 April 2024.

December and January offer round 1 outcomes

We're thrilled to share that we've offered 2,328 domestic undergraduate students a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) in the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) January offer round 1. We also offered 5,953 places in the December offer round, an increase of 956 offers on the same time last year.

The December offer round includes 1,103 offers to our inaugural Narrm Scholarship candidates, while 42 per cent of our overall domestic December round offers went to applicants eligible for Access Melbourne, our Special Entry Access Scheme.

In December, we awarded Victoria’s highest-achieving VCE students with a Melbourne Chancellor’s Scholarship to study with us in 2024.

The Melbourne Chancellor’s Scholarship is one of our most prestigious awards for school leavers, offering a generous fee exemption, as well as a guaranteed CSP in their preferred graduate program, including the Doctor of Medicine and Juris Doctor (Law).

The Scholarship is offered to school-leaver applicants who have satisfied prerequisites (and any extra requirements) and achieved an ATAR or equivalent of 99.9 or above, with concessions for Bachelor of Music applicants and Indigenous students.

Subject selection and meeting course prerequisties

Our undergraduate courses have different prerequisites. For example, the Bachelor of Science prerequisites are English, Mathematical Methods / Specialist Mathematics and either Biology, Chemistry or Physics, while the Bachelor of Arts prerequisite is English. We recommend that students check the ‘entry requirements’ tab on each of our course pages for full details on prerequisites ahead of their high school subject selection.

There are equivalent single subjects and tests students can take or pathways programs like the Diploma in General Studies.

Free HSC Study Sessions

Western's annual free HSC Study Sessions are being offered again this year from Monday 30 September to Friday 4 October.

Year 12 students are invited to register now for our free HSC Study Sessions. Students can choose from a range of 24 free sessions across 15 key HSC subject areas. These sessions are delivered online and offered in partnership with leading education services provider InspirationED, with their team of highly qualified HSC teachers and experienced markers to deliver the sessions.

We are excited to welcome 222 Year 12 students who have received offers for the 2024 University of Melbourne Extension Program, across 16 subject areas. Mathematics was the most popular subject, which is taught across seven School Centres and the Centre for Higher Education Studies (CHES).

The Extension Program is for high-achieving students looking to further their academic potential. It's free to join and through the program students are able to study university subjects alongside their final year of high school.

Curtin Univeristy

Curtin University (Medicine) - Casper Test Requirement

If any of your students will be applying to Curtin University (Medicine) this year, apart from the UCAT, applicants will also need to register and complete the Casper Test, which is conducted by Acuity Insights.

• Applicants will be ranked for the interview offer on the basis of their Casper score, UCAT score and ATAR.

• All applicants (other than Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders) must complete the Casper Test.

• School leavers and Curtin Course Switchers must sit the Undergraduate Casper Test. Non-school Leavers (Graduates) will have to sit the Postgraduate Casper Test.

• Casper scores are valid only for the next available admissions year. Applicants should only complete the test in the year immediately preceding their planned year of admission. Applicants re-applying for the Medical Entry in a subsequent year must re-sit the Casper Test.

• The Casper Test is held nationally and is sat online from home.

• Applicants are responsible for making their own arrangements to register for the Casper Test. Please refer to the Acuity Insights website to register for the test.

All admission information for domestic and international students including details about the requirement to sit the Casper Test can be found via the Curtin University School of Medicine webpage.

Charles Sturt University | CSU

Charles Sturt University offers the Joint Program in Medicine in partnership with Sydney University. The two-year program runs on our Orange campus in regional New South Wales and is followed by three years of regional placements.

Those who wish to attend can book here. Charles Sturt Advantage (CSA) early entry program 2024/25 Following the release of the Universities Accord: Early Entry Findings we are now able to provide an update on the Charles Sturt Advantage (CSA) early entry program details for 2024/25.

This year the CSA program details will be as follows:

• Applications will open on the 1 May and remain open until the 31 August.

• There will be one offer round and offers will be sent in late September.

• There will be two types of offers released - students will either receive a firm offer or a conditional offer.

• A firm offer means a student must complete year 12 without the ATAR requirement. This will be the vast majority of the offers students receive.

• A conditional offer means you must meet the minimum ATAR requirements before receiving a confirmed place in the selected course. Offers will have the conditions clearly outline in the offer email.

• Application requirements remain unchanged, the program will consider the students year 11 results and answers to three x 150-word questions, with examples included in their responses demonstrating their soft skills.

Well, in 2024 we’ll be hosting two free interactive ‘Making it in Media’ workshops – and you, your students in Year’s 9–12 and their parents are all invited to attend!

• The full-day simulated media workshops will be hosted inside our cutting-edge TV studio and creative hub – which has just received a $4.6 million upgrade.

• Your students will get first-hand experience working in the world of news, journalism, media, advertising, PR, and content creation, alongside students from other schools.

• The events will be free and completely catered.

CSA, or Charles Sturt Advantage, is our early offers program where your students could get a guaranteed spot in their chosen course before they sit the final exams. Last year we made almost 5,000 early offers! Applications will be closing on 31st August and we will have one offer round and offers will be sent in late September.
