Reddam House High School Newsletter
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Year 11 and Year 12 students have completed their examinations; feedback will begin next week. For the Year 12 students, this includes their last lessons in each subject, their Final Assembly on Friday, and Valedictory the following Monday before final preparations for their HSC Final Examinations. When the Year 11 students complete their feedback, they start their HSC journey exciting times for both year groups.
The winter sports competitions are reaching their playoff stage, and I congratulate all our teams on a thriving winter sports season, especially our Netball teams who have made it to the playoffs. Good luck in the Preliminaries and Grand Finals.
Netball Grand Final:
Reddam 9 (Year 8)
Reddam 11 (Year 7)
Netball Preliminary Finals:
Reddam 3 (Year 10)
Reddam 4 (Year 10)
Ms Squadrito summed up our teams performance last week, "Reddam Netball had a fantastic showing last Saturday, with an impressive 10 teams making it to the finals! Out of these, 2 teams (Reddam 9 and Reddam 11) have progressed straight through to the grand final, while another 2 (Reddam 3 and 4) will be playing in a preliminary final this weekend. This achievement is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and commitment to their teams and overall development. Their efforts are truly paying off, and we can't wait to see them continue to excel. Go Reddam!!"
This past week has been particularly spectacular for the Reddam House Debating Academy, with two significant noteworthy achievements.
Firstly, The University of Sydney Women and Gender Minority (WGM) Development Day:
We were incredibly proud to have two teams attend this event – Our Junior team, featuring Abby Sheary, Allegra Malki, Dani Freilikh, and Sophia Yu, and our team of Year 9s, featuring Kat Seki, Emma Bradburn, and Maddie Wenmohs. The day focused on the development and networking of women and gender minority debaters, offering our students the chance to improve their skills and connect with others in their high school and university communities. Both teams made great strides, maintaining an undefeated record across the day while taking advantage of the valuable workshops and discussions. It’s exciting to see how they grow in confidence and ability as they prepare for future competitions.
Secondly, The Australasian Schools Open (ASO) British Parliamentary Competition:
Two of our teams (Reddam 1: Emma Bradburn & Kat Seki, Reddam 2: Hartley Dixon-Holden & Abby Sheary) also represented Reddam at the International ASO BP Competition. Featuring over 200 teams and after a brutal five rounds of round robin, Reddam 1 successfully managed to break through to the semi-finals a massive achievement.
Furthermore, Reddam 1 went on to win the Semi-Finals, securing a position in the Grand Finals! Finally, after debating the benefits and harms of different approaches to climate change policy in the Grand Final, this brilliant team secured the first position, making them the Australasian champions of their age group a truly exceptional victory for them and the school. Considering the level of competition they faced and the improvement they have demonstrated in reaching this point, Kat was named 5th best speaker in Australia and 6th best speaker in the category. Emma was named the 6th best speaker in Australia, the 8th best in the category, and the best speaker of the grand finals. Congratulations, Kat and Emma; National Champions has a nice ring. What a fantastic outcome following all the hard work you have both put into your debating.
Congratulations to the following students on their achievements:
Tahlia McMaster (Y9) for being shortlisted for her poem in The Whitlam Institute’s "What Matters?" Writing Competition. With over 5,000 entries from 1,251 schools across Australia, this is an outstanding achievement. We are incredibly proud of Tahlia’s success in such a prestigious competition.
You can view Tahlia's poem here.
Mia Cohen (Y8) went to London for the Summer School Intensive Course at the Royal Ballet School, receiving a direct entry from her participation last year.
She had a great time and was again awarded a direct entry for next year. In addition, this week, she found out that she was nominated to be an invitee at the Australian Ballet School Interstate Program, which is only offered to students of this age who are not part of the full-time program. Again, this is an incredible achievement.
Janie Kogan (Y8) who competed in the National Piano Eisteddfods in Canberra and took First Place for one of her pieces, along with a Highly Commended award for another. Competing against 13year-olds with Amus-level, complex, and technical pieces makes this accomplishment even more impressive. Janie is incredibly proud of her performance, and we couldn’t be happier for her.
Ava Boyarsky (Y7) participated in the National U14 Ski Championships at Perisher Valley last week. She represented the Thredbo Ski Racing Club (TSRC) with distinction, finishing in the top 8 in the Dual Slalom, 7th in the Slalom, and 8th in the Giant Slalom. This places her firmly in the country's top 10 female U14 Skiers. The championship draws from the best skiers from all of Australia's premier racing clubs. Her results are a testament to her work ethic, discipline, and competitive spirit.
Have a wonderful weekend and week ahead,
Dave Pitcairn

Year 7 String Ensemble
The Year 7 Strings rehearse every Thursday morning and are a fantastic group of string players who have already performed once in Assembly this year. There are 4 sections in the ensemble - first violins, second violins, viola and cellos, and they have learnt a range of string quartet arrangements this year, ranging from classical, opera, pop and Disney pieces! In Term 3, the ensemble prepared for their 2nd Assembly, where they presented the two pieces 'Habanera' by Bizet and the 'Game of Thrones Theme Tune' by Djawadi. The strength of the players in this ensemble has meant that this year, the group have been able to move past basic intonation and playing as an ensemble, and have really been able to develop their musical expression, articulation and finesse.

Although many students apply directly to institutions for early offers, please remind them that not all institutions make early offers and not every course is available through these schemes. They should always aim for their dream course, even if it is not part of an early offer scheme.
A few things to note:
• International students will be able to apply from 17 April. They need to select 'International application' from the 'Apply or log in' drop-down on the UAC website.
• All IB students can now complete a UAC application as we have received their student data from the IBO.
• All interstate students should wait until 1 August to apply as UAC won't receive their student data until later in the year. I'll let you know if this changes.
Course preferences
While applications are open, please remind your students that not all courses are available to select within their application. However, they can still submit an application with at least one preference and then come back later to list additional courses when they become available.
Universities have until 1 August to have all 2025 courses available for selection in the application.
Starting an application: essential info
This year, students need the following details to start their UAC application:
Personal email address: For security reasons, when students start their application they will need to register with a personal email address and a password. They'll then be sent an email to validate their details. Once they've done that, they will use their email address and password to log in to their application.
Year 12 student number and UAC PIN: NSW and ACT students – We emailed UAC PINs to NSW and ACT students on 3 April using the email addresses NESA and ACT BSSS have on file. If any students didn't receive this email, please ask them to call UAC. Also remind them to register a personal email address in their NESA Students Online account.
Interstate and IB students: These students also need to enter their Year 12 student number and UAC PIN. Their UAC PIN is their date of birth: DDMM.
Students need to enter their Year 12 student number and UAC PIN early in the application. These details identify them as a 2024 Year 12 student, which means they'll be able to apply for an early offer through the Schools Recommendation Scheme.
Unique Student Identifier (USI): At the request of institutions, this is now a mandatory field for domestic applicants who are Australian citizens. Students can quickly and easily create their USI or check if they already have one.
Please tell your students about our next webinar for school leavers.

We know that some of you are far, we just want to let you know in case you have a student that is coming to Sydney during the holidays and would like to join us.
They will work alongside academics and researchers and experience hands-on activities, work through scenarios, and ask questions about career pathways and opportunities.
Applications to attend the workshops close Monday 1 July, spaces will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Did you know that James Cook University does not require a UCAT score as part of the application process for medicine or dentistry?
However, a written application and letters of support are part of the competitive selection process for Dentistry. Also, while JCU medicine no longer has a written application and letters of support component, it is vital to be well prepared for your medical interview across all of the assessed areas including understanding and knowledge of Indigenous, Rural & Tropical Health Issues in Medicine. We understand that the application and preparation process can be overwhelming, and that's why we're here to help!
On the 24th of August, we are conducting an informative workshop webinar during which you will gain valuable insights, practical tips, and personalised advice to create a standout application for the Dental Degree program at James Cook University.
