The Halo Effect Theatre

Catherine Zimdahl’s new Australian play, The Halo Effect was performed for the first time last week, Friday the 17th by Kambala girls’ school with boys from nearby schools acting in the male roles. The Halo Effect is a thoughtful play that considers many important matters such as land rights, religion's power, and the idea that power corrupts.

spotlight. JoJo has desperately gripped onto fame, and despite her interesting methods of doing so, her efforts in remaining relevant are truly admirable.

This raises the question, was the Siwa resurgence necessary? Or is it time that JoJo Siwa and many child stars alike finally depart from the public eye?

There is no denying that child stars have great difficulty departing from stardom and transitioning into regular adult life Whether it be actors, singers, or influencers, many children who have experienced fame struggle with letting it go.

While it is easy to shame and blame them for this, it is important to remember that it is not entirely their fault, and that they too may feel the same desire that we do for them to leave the limelight

Things such as a loss of identity, and lack of regular childhood experiences are huge factors in hindering people’s ability to step down from fame Child stars struggle with discovering their identity as their public persona becomes so intricately entwined into their personal one, such that it becomes extremely difficult to separate the two Especially since their public persona arises at such a young age, at a crucial developmental stage, growing up in the spotlight makes

PopCulture

So, no matter how hard they try, child stars are somewhat trapped in the entertainment industry as it is simply all that they know.

While we all reserve the right to our own opinions on the celebrities we believe should bring their careers to a close, we should also feel a certain degree of empathy for them While I’m sure JoJo Siwa is perfectly happy with the way her career has unfolded, we should not be ignorant of the struggles she and many child stars alike have experienced to get to where they are today.

it almost impossible for them to distinguish their true self, from their public image. Hence, many child stars develop a dependency on fame as it seems to be what makes them who they are Moreover, growing up in the entertainment industry can deprive child stars of normal childhood experiences, including friendships and everyday social interactions This lack of normalcy can hinder their ability to transition into a typical adult life, and inhibit them from exploring endeavours outside of the industry they grew up in

Advice from Mr Dalglish TeacherInterview

We were so privileged to be able to interview Mr Dalglish this week Thank you so much Mr Dalglish for meeting with us (and on such short notice!). The best interviews are the ones where the conversation continues after the interview, and this was definitely one of those cases We hope you enjoy reading about one of our favourite history teachers!

What’s your latest TV obsession?

Probably Fallout, on Amazon Prime It looks at a different reality as if there was a Cold War and it was instead America vs China. America is dominated by a multinational corporation that actually (spoiler!) has launched a nuclear war. Everyone is either irradiated and living on the surface or in bunkers in privileged positions.

Sarah and Maya

What subject was your favourite growing up?

History, obviously! Specifically ancient history

Do you have any hobbies?

I do outrigger paddling, about 2-3 times a week, to be out in the harbour and exercise As well as the things everyone says, I read a lot, I like theatre and music.

What’s your biggest pet peeve?

I think it’s intolerance Not just of a person, but intolerance to other ideas and perspectives They’ll have their point of view so doggedly that they can’t consider other perspectives or peoples’ feelings Even small things daily, like when people are driving Consider other people! Don’t drive like an Eastern Suburbs tank driver!

Who is your role model?

Probably someone like Margaret Atwood. I can appreciate her progressive politics, her immense intellect and empathy She inspires me through how she wants society to be, and I think that links to that tolerance, she encourages it

What were you doing before Reddam?

9

TeacherInterview

I’d been to Reddam twice, and before this time I was in England, working in a school over there. I’ve been a teacher for quite a while, but before then, I spent quite a bit of time just travelling through Europe, the Middle East and Africa, just doing any job I could, like bartending, working in restaurants, things like that

What was the school in England like?

I worked at several different schools there, but the last one I worked at was actually a failing school, and though it was challenging it was also insanely rewarding The students hadn’t been used to good quality education, and my job there was to train teachers to deliver good quality lessons There were lots of kids from poor backgrounds there, so when they got quality teaching, they became very aspirational, and that was quite inspiring

Who’s your work bestie?

Ms Vince My wife calls her my work wife, and it’s good because I can be told I’m stupid at work and home It keeps me completely grounded.

Do you have any book recommendations?

One that I found amazing is a Russian novel called The Master and Margarita. It’s a surreal novel, and it has this woman who becomes a witch and accompanies

Sarah and Maya

Satan to a party. It’s so powerful in its imagery and her strength and joy; it’s an amazing novel.

What’s your family like? Do you have any traditions at home?

There are not so many cultural traditions, most Scottish cultural traditions would be being depressed and not doing anything. We do have family traditions, we’ll have dinner every night, and we’ll sit and chat We’ll try to spend as much time together as a family, as we can. Birthdays and special occasions are always celebrated, and we always try to spend those together. We also go away as a family on holidays together, when we can We have a lovely dog, Clayton who is part of our family. He’s a Jack Russell, so he’s got a lot of energy, but he’s really well-behaved and really cute.

What’s it like having your wife working on the other campus?

It’s good because we get to drive home and we can both complain about Year 10 and Year 8 respectively You can detox a lot of the frustrations of the day really quickly in the car Also, for instance, if one of us has marking to do, the other will take up more of the housework, because you understand what the other person ’ s going through that week It also means that you generally share similar base values, and you get holidays off together.

10

TeacherInterview

What’s your favourite unit of history to teach?

That’s a really good question I like teaching extension 1, but my favourite topic would be Ancient Persia. I love Persian history and the way it is developed

Why is history better than geography?

Isn’t it obvious? No, no, I have the utmost respect for Geography and its academic background I think Alluvial Plains and Yaya tributaries are really important for everyday human interaction, and I would never say anything disrespectful about Geography I just think History wins out slightly in importance.

Do you have any advice for students struggling with history?

If you struggle with History, sometimes it is hard, and sometimes the causal links between things are hard to put together If you ’ re really struggling, I think it’s best to just try to enjoy the stories and interact with the people you learn about, on an historical level If you can, and you can see a little bit of wisdom in that plight to your life, that’s maybe enough.

Sarah and Maya Which teacher should we interview next week? Email us and let us know your suggestions.
