Reddam House High School

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

The final week of Term 3 has certainly shaken off the winter chill, and summer has arrived early to everyone's joy. Particularly joyful is Adin Milo and his partner, Elin, who welcomed Lennon into the world on Wednesday. Congratulations and welcome to the Reddam family, Lenny. What an excellent way to start the holiday.

This has been a fantastic week for the HSC Class. First, they enjoyed their Valedictory at the majestic SCG a fitting farewell to a great group of students. The mature, respectful, dignified, fun-filled last week of their school careers is a testament to the fine men and women they are. I thank and applaud them. It was an exceptional evening for parents, teachers, and students, enjoyed by all.

This was followed by the first set of HSC result indicators sent to the school. OnStage nominations, awarded to the best of the best as judged by the HSC Markers, have been received for all sixteen of our Drama cohort for their Group performances, and twelve of the sixteen received a nomination for their monologues. This is the best outcome Reddam has ever had, and congratulations to Mr Hodgson and Mr Montgomery, their outstanding teachers, and their sixteen students: Eve Bonett, Liam Docker, Taryn Herman, Ben Herz, Lucy Klein, Hugo Nihill, Lilian Ogrin, Karl Page, Ben Ryan, Ella Slot, Gabriella Steinberg, Dasher Stewart, Max Styles, Zoe Topper, Nathan Vass, and Coco Veksner-Shaw

Waverley Council hosted a Youth Summit on Friday, 8th September. The summit focused on hearing what matters to young people and how they could ensure their diverse views were represented and reflected within the Council and its services and programs.

Students from a range of schools, primary and secondary, public and private, presented, then prioritised issues of concerns identified by their peers.

Last Friday, students who achieved a distinction or high distinction on the ICAS Science assessment were congratulated in the Middle School assembly.

Reddam was well represented by Edan Angus, Izzy Lowe, Milly Golovsky, and Tali Whitten.

Last Thursday, the year 9 Charity Leaders, under the leadership of Sam Dubossarsky, organised the cultural day. This day centered around celebrating diversity amongst students and being proud of their cultures. On the day, we had several stalls selling food from around the world, originating from students' chosen cultures. The day was also mufti to raise more money and allow students to further celebrate their cultures by dressing up in traditional clothes. Some of the stalls we had on the day were French, Russian, and Asian cultures, just to name a few. They raised about $800 from the stalls and mufti donations combined. The day was very successful. These funds are going to the Cambodian International Service Project, which leaves tomorrow. Mr. Garratt, Mrs. Pelosi, and eleven students will be involved in helping at an elephant and sun bear sanctuary.

Year 7, Year 8, and Year 9 students who selected Chinese as an elective have realised that learning Chinese can be fun. Besides learning Chinese characters and grammar, students explore rich Chinese cultural connotations through various exciting activities.

Year 7 Chinese Continuers have been learning about “Family and Pets.” They did paper folding and paper cutting of a house and twelve Chinese Zodiac animals. Chinese paper folding, known as 折纸 (zhé zhǐ), originated in medieval China. The art of paper cutting, known as 剪纸 (jiǎn zhǐ), may date back to the 2nd century CE, when Cai Lun, a court official of the Eastern Han Dynasty, invented paper. Nowadays, these are often used as ways to decorate homes and offices and are given as gifts on special occasions.

Fried rice (炒饭, chǎo fàn), with its humble history, is said to be the Chinese all-in-one dish that conquered the world. Dumplings (饺子, jiǎo zi) are the go-to dish for Chinese food. Year 8 Chinese Continuers have been studying “Food and Drinks” this term. Year 9 Chinese Continuers have been exploring “Shopping” and revising food vocabulary. As a co-curricular activity and a celebration of the

successful completion of Term 3, Year 8 Chinese Continuers ate fried rice, and Year 9 Chinese Continuers ate dumplings in their last Chinese lesson of this term.

On the Sportsfields:

Oliver Sacks and his teammates in the NSW School Boys Soccer Team continued their success at the Australian Championships, going through the undefeated tournament and being crowned National Champions. The news gets even better with Oliver being selected for the Australian School Boys Team that will tour the UK later this year.

Four Reddam students competed in the NSWCIS Athletics Championships at Homebush this week. All of them did a great job giving it their very best effort.

Aston Lake ran a gutsy 1500m, finishing in 5th place, while Josh Tancred pushed himself to the limit, finishing 7th in the 800m.

Lulu Wirth was outstanding in the shot, finishing up with a silver medal. Lulu is new to this event and will be a powerhouse in the coming years.

Mateo Lopez Fisher had a massive day, winning the bronze medal in the triple jump and the gold medal in the high jump.

The great news is that all four athletes are progressing to compete at the NSW All Schools Championships later in the year.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the Primary School was at NIDA working on Frozen Jnr, and an ex-student (now working for the prestigious FOTI Fireworks) came in to install our snow machines. Ayaan Rahman of the HSC Class of 2022 teched all of the shows at Reddam, and FOTI staff speak highly of him. Also providing valuable assistance for the production were the backstage crew, wardrobe, hair, makeup, and photography teams my thanks to the following students for their involvement.

Max Gertler of Year 11 is on the Sydney Jewish Museum Youth Committee, hosting an event this Wednesday, 27th of September, called "The Strings of History". The event is aimed at high school and uni students, and it will be super interesting.

He tells me that, “ The event will have two parts:

First, there will be a panel with Eddie Friedlander (a holocaust survivor), Jeff Fletcher (Education Officer at the museum), and me with a Q & A session. The second part is an interactive tour of the museum. We will have four stations around the museum, discussing Jewish culture, traditions, and migration from ancient times to now. They will have interactive elements such as games or artifacts and the regular museum exhibits.

The event is from 1-3 p.m. at the museum. It's aimed at Jewish and non-Jewish students anyone interested in this area of history.

Here is the signup link: Jewish Museum sign-up link. It says RSVP by 22nd Sept, but ignore that as we are still taking signups. I have attached the flyer as well.”

The flyer can be found later in the newsletter.

Two student tours leave Australia today and Sunday: The Italy Art Retreat with Laurellen Symonds and the Reddam International Community Service Programme to Cambodia with Warren Garratt and Mel Pelosi. We know they will have a fantastic time, and we look forward to their feedback on their return.

Have a wonderful holiday, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back on 10th October, Dave

MIDDLE SCHOOL DRAMA PRODUCTION'

It’s Australia and a local Little Trooper Platoon (a parody of Boy Scouts) has gathered for the 15th Annual Bushwackeree, a weekend of camping and working towards earning patches. Things are going along swimmingly for this bunch of eager and adventurous Little Troopers until Dani, the newest recruit, has their secret plans revealed. How will the other troopers react? What are those ferocious noises coming from the bush? And what will Dani unmask about the Little Trooper Platoon? Whichever the case, if you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise.

Alan Howman is a new teacher at a Sydney high school. He is given a notoriously difficult Year 9 class for English and sets out to do his best. In his attempt to interest the students Alan devises some out-of-theordinary activities. It seems there are lessons to be learned not only for the students but for Alan as well.

The world has become a global community, opening up destinations that were previously unimaginable. These destinations can no longer take a passive approach to tourism marketing; they are products which need to be positioned and promoted sustainably.

This subject aims to provide students with in-depth knowledge and understanding of the environmental, socio-cultural and economic impacts on a tourist destination. Students will explore various topics such as tourist motivation, branding a destination, managing tourists, special interest tourism and crisis management. They then will work collaboratively to develop a competitive and sustainable tourism plan for a destination.

Portfolio admissions pathway for Architecture and Design Computing degrees

The portfolio admissions pathway offers students the potential to gain adjustment factors towards entry into certain programs in architecture or design computing. Students can showcase their potential through submitting a portfolio of work online. The first round of submissions for entry into a selection of architecture and design degrees are open until Sunday 24 September 2023 at 11:59pm. Visit our website to find out more.

New single application for scholarships

Students can now complete one form to be considered for most scholarships at the University of Sydney*. High School students will need their most recent school report or HSC trial results, to answer self-reflective questions about their motivation to study and let us know what areas of study they’re considering. To be eligible for scholarships via this form, students must have a University of Sydney course in their UAC preferences by 29 September. They only need to complete the form once (unless their circumstances change) and upon successful completion will be considered for equity and/or meritbased scholarships depending on their circumstances.

Note, scholarships that have previously been awarded automatically (e.g. MySydney) will continue to be awarded automatically depending on a student’s eligibility. However, we still recommend students apply for scholarships using this form so they can be considered for as many as, and to the highest value, possible.

* Some University of Sydney scholarships will still require individual application per scholarship. See sydney.edu.au/scholarships for a list of all scholarships, including terms and conditions.

Admission pathways and entry schemes

Our entry schemes help students make the most of their qualifications by recognising their circumstances, special achievements and other abilities and activities. Most of our entry schemes are currently open, with fast approaching application deadlines. To learn more and apply, students can visit the admission pathways webpage or email Sydney Future Students at admission.pathways@sydney.edu.au with questions.

New admission scheme: Regional and Remote Entry Scheme

The Regional and Remote Scheme – for domestic students residing in or attending a school in a regional or remote area – offers admission to a Sydney Uni undergraduate degree on a reduced ATAR. Students are also encouraged to submit an application to be considered for scholarships through the University's new single scholarship application form. Applications close 29 September and students must also have the University of Sydney listed as a preference on this date.

However, we still recommend students apply

for scholarships using this form so they can be considered for as many as, and to the highest value, possible.

Apply now

* Some University of Sydney scholarships will still require individual application per scholarship. See sydney.edu.au/scholarships for a list of all scholarships, including terms and conditions.

Domestic undergraduate scholarships single application form

We're dedicated to supporting your students throughout their time at university. We offer a wide variety of scholarships for domestic undergraduate students. To make the process easier, we've created a centralised form where students can be considered from a pool of $1.5 million worth of scholarships through one simple application. To be eligible for scholarships via this form, current Year 12 students must complete the form and have a University of Sydney course in their UAC preferences by 29 September.

Visit the domestic undergraduate scholarships webpage to learn more about the eligibility criteria and application process, to view a list of the scholarships covered in this form, and to submit an application.

UAC Applications

Applications are still steadily rolling in. Please remind students that to be considered for many highdemand courses, and to avoid a higher fee, they should lodge a UAC application before 29 September. If they wish to be considered for an SRS offer, both applications must be lodged by 18 September.

Many people ask about the benefits of applying through UAC compared to applying directly to an institution for an early offer, so here are a few key points:

• Not all courses are available for early offers.

• An early offer is not guaranteed.

• A UAC application provides more options for preferences.

• Students who have experienced difficulties/disadvantages in Year 11 or 12 can have their circumstances taken into account through an EAS application. Students should make the most of their options and list different course preferences in their UAC application and their direct application. However, if they miss out on an early offer from a direct application they can add that course preference to their UAC application and compete for an offer based on their ATAR. The majority of students will be made an offer based on their ATAR and the hard work they have put into their Year 12 studies.

Preferences

While attending uni open days this year, the UAC Community Engagement team has answered many questions from students about how to list their preferences. In some cases a university has told them

they need to list a course as their number one preference in order to receive an offer, but the course is not their first choice.

Students should always:

• place their dream course as their first preference

• include a back-up course as a lower preference. And they should find out:

• the previous lowest selection ranks for the course – is it a realistic choice?

• if they are eligible for any adjustment factors. University open day dates

Introducing UNSW Portfolio Entry Early Conditional Offers

We are excited to announce that for Term 1, 2024 onwards, domestic students who are successful in applying for the UNSW Portfolio Entry Scheme will be eligible for an Early Conditional Offer.

Portfolio Entry provides students applying for most Arts, Design & Architecture and Engineering degrees with the opportunity to showcase their passion and talent through a portfolio of work, alongside their ATAR.

What is a Portfolio Entry Early Conditional Offer?

Successful applicants will receive an early conditional offer which has an adjusted ATAR requirement up to 10 ATAR points below the lowest selection rank for a specific degree or range of related degrees.

If a student meets or exceeds the adjusted ATAR requirement for an eligible degree and lists this as their highest eligible preference in UAC for the specified UAC offer round, then they will be issued a firm offer to that degree.

For Term 1, 2024 entry, firm offers for Portfolio Entry will be issued in UAC December Round 2 (NSW and ACT applicants) and January Round 1 (Interstate and IB applicants).

When is the Deadline?

Submissions for Term 1, 2024 are already open, with early conditional offers released Friday, 1 September 2023.

A late round of Portfolio Entry applications will open Saturday, 2 September 2023 and close on Wednesday, 22 November 2023. Late round early conditional offers will be released on Friday, 8 December 2023.Find out more
