WELCOME TO HOBART As the Lord Mayor of Hobart, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our wonderful City. Hobart is one of the most beautiful and liveable cities in the world. Its unique setting provides for an ambience that you will not find in another city, anywhere. Hobart is full of enchanting buildings, glorious parks and is home to an iconic waterfront. It is a city where everyone can enjoy a slice of the good life! Hobartians feel very proud and privileged for the natural assets we have in Hobart. The remarkable beauty of kunanyi / Mount Wellington with its 360 degree views of the city and surrounds is as much an icon internationally as it is in Tasmania. A visit to Hobart would not be complete without sampling the many delicacies that are on offer at our very popular Salamanca Markets, restaurants, patisseries and produce available fresh from the farmer’s gate. Hobart is well-known for its preservation of heritage and we have a great number of heritage buildings. In Hobart, people can enjoy the contrast of elegant heritage sandstone alongside modern architecture. We are linked to a fabulous maritime history and Hobart is Australia’s gateway to the Antarctic. The people of Hobart are renowned for their friendliness and I have no doubt that you will discover a very warm welcome and a highly enriching experience while here.

GETTING YOUR BEARINGS
SULLIVANS COVE Located on the River Derwent and founded by Lieutenant Governor David Collins in 1804, Sullivans Cove was the birthplace of Hobart. Up until the late 1960s, the Cove was a major freight port for Tasmania. Stretching from Hunter Street to Salamanca Place, this area has retained its historical value. Many of the original buildings are still standing and the warehouses have been repurposed. Today, the area is a key location for some of Hobart’s major tourist activities and festivities.
BATTERY POINT Hobart’s oldest and most historic suburb, which was named after the battery of guns, established on the point in 1818 as part of Hobart’s coastal defences. Historic homes in Battery Point date back to the 1830s and 1840s when they were built to accommodate the growing settlement. Architectural styles range from small fisherman’s cottages to the extravagant mansions of merchants and master mariners. Today, Battery Point is one of the city’s most prestigious suburbs.
SANDY BAY Located south of Hobart, stretching between the slopes of Mount Nelson and a number of beaches that line the shore of the River Derwent. Sandy Bay is one of Hobart’s most popular and diverse suburbs, with a range of architectural periods from colonial sandstone buildings to large modern homes and student accommodation surrounding the University of Tasmania. Sandy Bay offers a vibrant and multicultural mix of shopping and dining experiences to please all tastes and budgets.

SOUTH HOBART Nestled in the foothills of kunanyi / Mount Wellington with elevated views over the city, South Hobart is one of the city’s oldest suburbs. Settled in the 1830s, the area was home to wealthy lawyers, doctors and magistrates who built very large, gracious homes. Today, South Hobart has become the chic end of town with many coffee shops, gift stores and access to great walks throughout Wellington Park.
HOBART CITY CENTRE Hobart is Australia’s second oldest capital city after Sydney in New South Wales and is noticeably smaller than other Australian cities, with low-rise buildings connected by one-way streets and surrounded by plenty of green space. Hobart is also the second driest capital city after Adelaide in South Australia. Hobart lies on the edge of the River Derwent with an ever changing backdrop of kunanyi / Mount Wellington. You’ll also see heritage-listed buildings nestled beside modern architecture. There are over 200,000 people living in the Greater Hobart area and over 500,000 in Tasmania.
QUEENS DOMAIN An area of 200 hectares of public recreational land located north of Hobart CBD, alongside the River Derwent. The site was originally used for military and defence purposes. In the 1850s the site was gazetted as a public reserve and given to the people of Tasmania by Queen Victoria, becoming known as “the people’s park”. Today the Queens Domain includes historical, cultural and natural attractions, such as Government House, the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, Old Hobart Zoo, Hobart Cenotaph, Soldiers Memorial Avenue and Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre as well as sporting fields, walking tracks and picnic areas.
