Fall Into Winter

This season, Redding Recreation is trying something a little different with our Activity Guide. We are combining the Fall and Winter issues into one, comprehensive family guide. We have several new classes this year including a Pickleball League and Women’s Self-Defense, along with some returning favorites like Bocce Ball and Mosaics with Angie. There are activities for the whole family, including an updated line-up at the Redding Senior Center. The pandemic still has everyone feeling a little uncertain, but we hope to bring some joy to the holidays with Harry Potter and Operation Reindeer. Join us as we Fall Into Winter with some great Redding Recreation activities.

Would your family like to be featured on the cover of the Activity Guide? Send us an email at reddingrecreation@gmail.com, and use Cover Photo in the email subject line. We are scheduling photo shoots with local families in our beautiful parks. You get some great family photos, and we get your permission to use them in our communication efforts. Everybody wins!

Below, you will find what you can expect when attending a Redding Recreation program. However, based on the type, location, and age group of the program or event, some guidelines may be modified or adjusted to comply with health regulations.

Walk-In The Recreation Office is located at 777 Cypress Avenue, Second Floor. Office hours are Monday–Friday, 8:00 am– 5:00 pm (closed some holidays).

Phone-In Give us a call! We are happy to help register your family over the phone. Call us at 225.4095, and one of our office staff will assist you with whatever you need.

Registration Pre-registration prior to first class and full payment are required for all activities unless otherwise stated. Please register one week before class begins so class materials may be prepared by instructor.

Fee Assistance Program We offer fee assistance for qualified low-income City of Redding/Shasta Lake residents (ages 0–17) for many classes and sports leagues. For more information on fee assistance availability, call 225.4095

Face Coverings Face coverings are recommended for individuals inside public spaces. During any outdoor activity, safe social distancing is suggested. Face covering policies may differ for specific classes if health guidelines specify.

Sanitation All staff have been trained in proper sanitation techniques. All facilities are throughly cleaned before and after each use, and sanitation procedures are followed during each activity.

Physical Space We are asking all patrons to do their best to keep a safe social distance between themselves inside our facilities and participating in activities. Based on the type of activity, less spectators may be allowed. If spectators are allowed, please maintain adequate distance while watching. During the majority of these programs, a nutritious meal is served to participants. The MLK Jr. Center’s vision is to see all Redding youth have equal access to educational, recreational, and enriching programs in a supportive environment. Kids Who Build Grades 3–9

Join this technology-focused class that allows youth to learn introductory cyber skills in an inclusive environment that encourages problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking. This session, kids will be learning stop motion animation. This is a great way to encourage S.T.E.A.M. concepts and provides children with a fun combination of storytelling and technology use. Stop motion is a filming technique where pictures are taken of objects that are moved in small increments. When the pictures are put together, it makes the objects appear to be moving (Isle of Dogs and Coraline are famous examples of this technique). To make these movies, we use flip books, iPhones/iPads, and free apps called Stop Motion Studio. CRS# 1948

Positively Girls Club

Positively Girls Circle

Positively Girls Club is using the Girls with Ideas evidencebased curriculum. In this session, girls will learn what it means to find their voice and leadership style while also learning what other young women around the world are doing to impact their communities. Once the girls gain confidence in their own leadership styles and gifts, the next session, the girls will get to formulate ideas, work together to compile or tweak ideas, and then they will brainstorm on how to implement them and vote on final projects. The girls will come up with ideas focused on business, community, and the environment. Girls will then be split up into groups to decide on an idea for each subject and implement it.

Positively Girls Circle strives to provide girls ages 13–18 with a safe and encouraging environment where girls have positive mentorship, and an opportunity to build their self-esteem and self-identity. PGC utilizes an evidencebased curriculum that provides skill development for media literacy and digital citizenship with more accurate information on how to use social media safely in an emotionally-healthy manner. This curriculum uses complex intersecting topics of technology, body image, cyber bullying, self-esteem, and relationships.

King’s Brotherhood

King’s Brotherhood Council

King’s Brotherhood provides youth positive mentorship in a safe and encouraging environment. Staff utilize an evidence-based curriculum from the One Circle Foundation called Standing Together: A Journey into Respect which utilizes engaging ways to address common themes that pre-teens and early adolescents encounter, including breaking down social-cultural barriers, motives and actions around put-downs, knowing personal rights, defining assumptions about male power, respecting others’ physical boundaries, understanding and using the energy of strong emotions, and standing up for each other in community.

A staff mentor will guide young men further into a holistic process of growth and transformation that includes four areas of human development: emotional, spiritual, psychological, social, and intellectual. The journey begins by exploring young men’s challenges, strengths, and coping strategies formed after a premature loss of love and protection. Then council members are guided through a process to rediscover a sustaining internal resource of protection, security, and belonging. The journey continues to build upon individual and collective resources to reclaim or create dreams, develop goals, increase social and cooperative skills, and choose and apply transformative behaviors in their relationships and activities in order to overcome barriers and create lives of contribution, meaning, and connection.

I further represent and warrant that I am advised of the existence of California Civil Code § 1542, which provides as follows: A general release does not extend to claims which the creditor does not know or suspect to exist in his favor at the time of executing the release, which if known by him must have materially affected his settlement with the debtor.

Notwithstanding this provision, this will constitute a full release in accordance with its terms. I knowingly and voluntarily waive the provisions of Section 1542, as well as any other statute, law or rule of similar effect, and acknowledge and agree that this waiver is an essential and material term of my participation or that of the child listed below. Severability: If any term clause or provision of this Waiver, Release of Liability and Disclaimer is held to be illegal, invalid or unenforceable, the remainder of this Release of Liability shall not be affected thereby, and shall be enforceable to the fullest extent permitted by law. I have read and understand the above agreement and fully assume all risks for any injuries. It is understood that the City of Redding does not provide health or accident insurance for participants. Consent is given for the leader in charge to perform first–aid or take any other emergency action he/she deems necessary in his/her best judgment.
