Advent Lessons and Carols – December 11, 2022 The Order of Worship at 11:00 am
As always, we pray that worship at Redeemer is a blessing for you, even as your participation blesses us, whether we are gathering in the name of Christ in-person or online. As you are comfortable, we encourage you to sing the hymns and to sing or speak the congregational portions of the liturgy in bold type.

At this time, the wearing of face coverings onsite is optional and left to personal preference. Knowing that individuals and families have varying needs at this time, the balcony is reserved as a mask-required area.
Please use the links available on the viewing page to let us know that you are worshiping with us, to submit any prayer requests, to let us know if you need help or are available to help a neighbor, and to continue giving financially to support the ongoing ministries of Redeemer.
Our 11 AM worship service is Livestreamed in Rudisill Hall for anyone who needs “to take a break” from worship in the sanctuary. Please ask an usher if you need directions.

Based on the O Antiphons
The O Antiphons are a set of medieval refrains originally used before and after the singing of the Magnificat. They were in use already in the eighth century. Each invokes the Messiah under a different title derived from the Old Testament. This title is then amplified, and followed by an appeal to “come” and save us in a particular way. Around the twelfth century, they were collected into a Latin verse hymn, which was later translated by John Mason Neale, finally becoming the beloved Advent hymn “O come, O come, Emmanuel” These antiphons form the structure of this service. They are sung by a cantor this morning. The congregation sings the corresponding stanza of “O come, O come, Emmanuel” after each antiphon.

DIALOGUE
Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!
I will hear what the Lord God has to say—
A voice that speaks for peace. Peace for all faithful people and those who turn to him in their hearts. God’s help is near for those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land.
Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!
PRAYER
The Lord be with you. | And also with you. Let us pray.
Gracious God, through the ages you have sent your promise to your people in many ways, through many voices. But in these last days, your Son has come to bring it among us in person. Through your Spirit, prepare our hearts to recognize him in his many forms, and to receive him as our Lord and Savior. Amen.
O Wisdom
ANTIPHON

O Wisdom, you came forth from the mouth of the Holy One. Mighty and sweet your ordering of life: Teach us prudence.
All sing O come, O Wisdom from on high, | embracing all things far and nigh: in strength and beauty come and stay; | teach us your will and guide our way. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel | shall come to you, O Israel.
LESSON
Isaiah 40:3-5 Mia Kim, lector
A voice cries out: "In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken."
I will wait for the Lord, | and I will hope in God who saves us.

O Adonai
ANTIPHON
O Adonai and Israel’s God, your flame brought Moses to his knees. Your mountain brought forth law and life: Come and redeem us.
All sing O come, O come, O Lord of might, | as to your tribes on Sinai's height in ancient times you gave the law | in cloud, and majesty, and awe. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel | shall come to you, O Israel.
LESSON
Exodus 6:2-7a Lars Peterson, lector
God also spoke to Moses and said to him: "I am the LORD. I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name 'The LORD' I did not make myself known to them. I also established my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they resided as aliens. I have also heard the groaning of the Israelites whom the Egyptians are holding as slaves, and I have remembered my covenant. Say therefore to the Israelites, 'I am the LORD, and I will free you from the burdens of the Egyptians and deliver you from slavery to them. I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. I will take you as my people, and I will be your God. You shall know that I am the LORD your God, who has freed you from the burdens of the Egyptians.
I will wait for the Lord, | and I will hope in God who saves us.

O Root of Jesse
ANTIPHON
O Root of Jesse, tarry not; o’er all your people your banner waves. All rulers and nations worship you: Heal the nations.
All sing O come, O Branch of Jesse, free | your own from Satan's tyranny; from depths of hell your people save, | and give them vict'ry o'er the grave. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel | shall come to you, O Israel.
LESSON
Isaiah 11:1-10 Colin Walker,
lector
A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the LORD shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. His delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his loins.
The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder's den. They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious.
I will wait for the Lord, | and I will hope in God who saves us.

O Key of David, sign of might, you tear down bars that hold us fast. Deliver the captives and free us from death: Burst our prison.
All sing
O come, O Key of David, come, | and open wide our heav'nly home; make safe the way that leads on high, | and close the path to misery. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel | shall come to you, O Israel.
LESSON
Fiona Peterson, lector
Isaiah 42:5-9
Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it:
I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the LORD, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them.
I will wait for the Lord, | and I will hope in God who saves us.

O come, O King of nations, come, | O Cornerstone that binds in one: refresh the hearts that long for you; | restore the broken, make us new. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel | shall come to you, O Israel.
LESSON
Colin Walker, lector
Say to those who are of a fearful heart, "Be strong, do not fear!
Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you."
Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy.
For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes.
I will wait for the Lord, | and I will hope in God who saves us.

RESPONSIVE PRAYER
Cherubim and Seraphim Choirs
Our world stumbles blindly toward chaos— come, source of wisdom, and reveal yourself to us. What we imagine to be strength is really weakness— come, mighty Lord, and fill us with your true strength. We long for a standard to look up to— come, Root of Jesse, claim us as your own. We languish in prisons of mind and spirit— come, Key of David, and set us free. The darkness grows thick around us— come, Light of light, and dawn upon us.
We are scattered, lacking a sure leader— come, Prince of peace, and lead us. We need to know that God is with us— come, Emmanuel, and dwell in our hearts. Amen.

OFFERING PRAYER
Eternal God, you make the desert bloom and send springs of water to thirsty ground. Receive these simple gifts of bread, wine, and money, and make us messengers of your mercy and love for all in need of your healing and justice. We ask this through Christ our Savior. | Amen
GREAT THANKSGIVING
The Lord be with you. | And also with you. Lift up your hearts! | We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. | It is right to give our thanks and praise.
It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. You comforted your people with the promise of the Redeemer, through whom you will also make all things new in the day when he comes to judge the world in righteousness. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
We praise you, living and loving God, that you have sent your Son to this world. Christ is your Wisdom, sweetly ordering all creation, our Lawgiver, burning with justice, the Branch from Jesse’s tree, sprouting flowers from old roots, the Key of David, opening our prison doors.
And let the people cry, O come and save us: O come and save us.

We praise you, serving and saving God, that you send your Son also to this table, who on the night before he died took bread, and gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.
And let the people cry, O come and save us: O come and save us.
We beg you, mighty and merciful God: send us the Spirit of your Son. Dwell in this food and in all who share it, that the earth may rejoice in your presence. In Christ, the dawn from on high, enlighten your people, reign as Sovereign to unite all, and live among us, Emmanuel, our deepest desire.
And let the people cry, O come and save us: O come and save us.
Even so, come, Lord Jesus, with your Father and your Spirit, to the church, and receive our praises, now and forever. Amen.
Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray…
LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
