Second Sunday after Epiphany– January 15, 2023 The Order of Worship at 11:00 am

As always, we pray that worship at Redeemer is a blessing for you, even as your participation blesses us, whether we are gathering in the name of Christ in-person or online. As you are comfortable, we encourage you to sing the hymns and to sing or speak the congregational portions of the liturgy in bold type.

At this time, the wearing of face coverings onsite is optional and left to personal preference. Knowing that individuals and families have varying needs at this time, the balcony is reserved as a mask-required area.

If you are worshipping online, please use the links available on the viewing page to let us know that you are worshiping, to submit any prayer requests, to let us know if you need help or are available to help a neighbor, and to continue giving financially to support the ongoing ministries of Redeemer.

KINDERGARTEN FAITH STEPPING STONE: REMEMBERING OUR BAPTISM

We welcome our Kindergartners and their parents up to the altar steps. These Kindergartners have spent the last two weeks learning about how baptism refreshes us, sends us into the world to serve, and calls us to be God’s children every day.

Standing

Faith Stepping Stones is a ministry where the church and parents work together to fulfill the promises made at the children’s baptism; to live among God’s faith people, bring them to the Lord’s Table, teach them the Lord’s Prayer and the Ten Commandments.

THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation. Amen.

Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.

By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us heirs of your promise and servants of all. We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ. Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace, and love.

To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

People of God, do you renew your promise to support these children and pray for them in their life in Christ? | We do.

Seated SIGNING WITH THE CROSS

3

In baptism, each of these children was called by name and anointed with the words “child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever.”

And now, parents, we invite you to make the sign of the cross on your child’s forehead using water from the font.

GIVING OF THE LIGHT

Through their baptism, these children have already entered into the ministry of this community of faith, enriching it by using their gifts of curiosity, music, joy, friendship, and compassion. They each receive a new candle today as a reminder to let their lights shine brightly on their world, their neighbors, their friends, and their families. | Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

Standing GREETING

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. | And also with you.

KYRIE

Sheila Brock, cantor

In peace let us pray to the Lord.

For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord.

For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.

For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord.

4

Help, save, comfort and defend us, gracious Lord.

HYMN OF PRAISE

5

PRAYER OF THE DAY

The Lord be with you. | And also with you.

Holy God, our strength and our redeemer, by your Spirit hold us forever, that through your grace we may worship you and faithfully serve you, follow you and joyfully find you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. | Amen. Please use the Prayer Request link here or on the webpage to submit your requests.

CHILDREN’S SERMON

THE FIRST READING

Jonne Walter, lector

Isaiah 49:1-7

Here the servant, identified as Israel, speaks for herself and describes her honored mission. Called before her birth like Jeremiah and John the Baptist, the servant is not only to restore Israel. The servant’s ultimate assignment is to bring news of God’s victory to the ends of the earth. God in faithfulness has chosen Israel for this task.

Listen to me, O coastlands, pay attention, you peoples from far away! The Lord called me before I was born, while I was in my mother’s womb he named me. He made my mouth like a sharp sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow, in his quiver he hid me away. And he said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.” But I said, “I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my cause is with the Lord, and my reward with my God.” And now the Lord says, who formed me in the womb to be his servant,

6

to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am honored in the sight of the Lord, and my God has become my strength he says, “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”

Thus says the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nations, the slave of rulers, “Kings shall see and stand up, princes, and they shall prostrate themselves, because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”

Word of God, word of life. | Thanks be to God.

PSALM 40:1-11

I waited patiently up- | on the LORD, who stooped to me and | heard my cry.

The LORD lifted me out of the desolate pit, out of the | miry clay, and set my feet upon a high cliff, making my | footing sure.

The LORD put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise | to our God; many shall see, and stand in awe, and put their trust | in the LORD. Happy are they who trust | in the LORD!

They do not turn to enemies or to those who | follow lies. R

Great are the wonders you have done, O LORD my God! In your plans for us, none can be com- | pared with you!

Oh, that I could make them known and tell them! But they are more than | I can count.

Sacrifice and offering you do | not desire;

7

you have opened my ears: burnt-offering and sin-offering you have | not required. R

And so I said, “Here I | am; I come.

In the scroll of the book it is writ- | ten of me: ‘I love to do your will, | O my God; your law is | deep within me.’ ”

I proclaimed righteousness in the | great assembly;

I have not restrained my lips, O | LORD, you know.

I have not hidden your righteousness in my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and | your deliverance;

I have not concealed your steadfast love and truth from the | great assembly.

You are the LORD; do not withhold your compas- | sion from me; may your steadfast love and your truth continually | keep me safe. R

THE SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 1:1-9

Though God’s church in Corinth is a fractious congregation beset with many conflicts, Paul opens this letter by spotlighting the multiple ways God has enriched and sustained its life as part of the divine call into the fellowship of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,

To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Word of God, word of life. | Thanks be to God.

Standing GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

8

THE HOLY GOSPEL

John 1:29-42

John the Baptist’s witness to Jesus initiates a chain of testimony as his disciples begin to share with others what they have found.

The Holy Gospel according... | Glory to you, O Lord.

[John the Baptist] saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.” And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, “Look, here is the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).

The Gospel of the Lord. | Praise to You, O Christ.

Seated SERMON Pastor Jenny McLellan

APOSTLE’S CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again;

10
Standing HYMN 311 Hail to the Lord’s

he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Kneeling or seated PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

Called together to follow Jesus, we pray for the church, the world, and all in need. A brief silence.

Put a new song in the mouth of your church. Inspire the baptized to tell of your faithfulness, sharing the good news of your salvation throughout the earth. Bless the witness of missionaries, especially the ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission, as they walk alongside communities all over the world. Merciful God, | receive our prayer.

The waters of baptism call us into life in the Spirit. Preserve the world’s waters: protect them from pollution and bring rain in places of drought. Guide us in protecting local waterways, especially Lake Lanier, the Chattahoochee River, and the Hemphill Reservoir. Merciful God, | receive our prayer.

In Jesus you are the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Show your mercy to all nations. Direct leaders to do your will; fill governing bodies with righteousness; equip judges with discernment and compassion. Merciful God, | receive our prayer.

You incline your ear to all who cry to you. Draw near to individuals and communities suffering violence, injustice, illness, or poverty. Hide them in the shadow of your hand and make us signs of your faithfulness to all in need (We pray especially for . . .).

Merciful God, | receive our prayer.

11

You are glorified in the servants you have called. With Martin Luther King Jr., give us bold trust in you. Even when it feels like a sharp sword or polished arrow, give us courage to receive your call to repentance and racial justice. Merciful God, | receive our prayer.

In every place and time, you have sanctified your people. We praise you for the testimony of those who have died in the faith (especially. . .). Strengthen us as we wait for the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. Merciful God, | receive our prayer.

We bring to you our needs and hopes, O God, trusting your wisdom and power revealed in Christ crucified. Amen.

Standing PEACE

The peace of Christ be with you always. | And also with you. Please share a sign of blessing with your fellow worshipers in whatever way is comfortable for you.

Please let us know you worshiped with us today by using the I’m Worshiping link as you would the attendance pad at church.

ANTHEM

He Comes to Us

He comes to us as one unknown, | a breath unseen, unheard; | as though within a heart of stone, | or shriveled seed in darkness sown, | a pulse of being stirred.

He comes when souls in silence lie | and thoughts of day depart; | half-seen upon the inward eye, | a falling star across the sky | of night within the heart.

He comes to us in sound of seas, | the ocean's fume and foam; | yet small and still upon the breeze, | a wind that stirs the tops of trees, | a voice to call us home.

He comes in love as once he came | by flesh and blood and birth; | to bear within our mortal frame | a life, a death, a saving Name, | for every child of earth.

He comes in truth when faith is grown; | believed, obeyed, adored: | the Christ in all the Scriptures shown, | as yet unseen, but not unknown, | our Saviour and our Lord.

Standing OFFERTORY HYMN

OFFERING PRAYER

Liberating God, you break the bonds of injustice and let the oppressed go free. Receive these offerings in thanksgiving for all your works of merciful power, and shape us as people of your justice and freedom. You we magnify and adore, through Jesus our Savior, | Amen.

GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you. | And also with you. Lift up your hearts! | We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. | It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. By the leading of a star he was shown forth to all nations; in the waters of the Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son; and in the miracle of water turned to wine he revealed your glory. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

13
Text © Joel W. Lundeen, admin. Augsburg Fortress

O God most mighty, O God most merciful, hear us as we praise, call us to your meal, grant us your life.

When the earth was formless and empty, you created order and beauty. When Abraham and Sarah were barren, you delivered them a child; when the Israelites were enslaved, you led them to freedom; Ruth faced starvation, David fought Goliath, and the psalmists cried out for healing with all your people we implore you to save us, and we praise you for granting us life.

You came to our world in Jesus our friend. He was born among the poor, he lived under oppression, he wept over the city. Full of compassion, he granted the people your life.

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

Come, Breath of creation, enliven our bones. Come, living Water, replenish the earth. Come, holy Fire, make us lights in the world. Like a tree rich with fruit,

14

nourish us with your bounty. From your throne, teach us justice. In your arms, give us peace.

Mighty God, mothering God, grant us your life, the life of the Father to the Son, the life of the Spirit of our risen Savior, life in you, now and forever. | Amen.

Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray…

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

MAC (Midtown Assistance Center) Coat Drive | Now through Jan. 15

“He who has two coats, let him share with him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.” Luke 3:11

We at Redeemer practice the second part of this verse every week with the wonderful food ministry. We also practice it with the food drive we do at the beginning of summer for Midtown Assistance Center (MAC), This is very much appreciated!

Now is our opportunity to do the first part of that verse. We are finally able to do an in person coat drive again and MAC is in need of coats. In the past they have only needed men's coats. This year they can use men's, women's and children’s. They have other organizations they can give the coats to if they receive more than they need. They can also use caps, gloves and scarves. We will be collecting these coats between December 11th and January 1st. There will be collection bins in the atrium labeled with signs for MAC. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Richard Mauney at richardemauney@gmail.com

We are truly blessed at Redeemer and if you have a second coat (or any of these other items) you would like to share, they would be greatly appreciated. May we take this Christman season to be thankful, think about others in our community who are not as blessed and show God's love to them by sharing from our abundance.

YOUTH

On Sunday, January 8, we started using the chalices made by our 8th graders at 9 AM worship. Each 8th-grade Confirmation student had to answer the question, "What does Communion mean to you?" From January 8-22, the chalice used was painted by Reese Dumont. This is Reese's interpretation: "To me, communion is a way for everyone to come together and share the love of God. Ever since I remember, I have done communion with my family."

Save the date-our Middle School Parents will be meeting on Sunday, January 29 for their oncea-month gathering from 10:00am-10:45am in the Library. Come catch up with other parents!

DiAngelo explains how spiritual white progressives seeking community by co-opting Indigenous and other groups’ rituals create separation, not connection. She challenges the ideology of individualism and explains why it is OK to generalize about white people, and she demonstrates how white people who experience other oppressions still benefit from systemic racism. Writing candidly about her own missteps and struggles, she models a path forward, encouraging white readers to continually face their complicity and embrace courage, lifelong commitment, and accountability.
