Second Sunday in Lent – March 5, 2023
The Order of Worship at 11:00 am
As always, we pray that worship at Redeemer is a blessing for you, even as your participation blesses us, whether we are gathering in the name of Christ in-person or online. As you are comfortable, we encourage you to sing the hymns and to sing or speak the congregational portions of the liturgy in bold type.
At this time, the wearing of face coverings onsite is optional and left to personal preference. Knowing that individuals and families have varying needs at this time, the balcony is reserved as a mask-required area.
If you are worshipping online, please use the links available on the viewing page to let us know that you are worshiping, to submit any prayer requests, to let us know if you need help or are available to help a neighbor, and to continue giving financially to support the ongoing ministries of Redeemer.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God. Most merciful God, | we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.
In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
Standing GREETING
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. | And also with you.

For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord.
For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.
For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord.

God speaks to us in scriptures read, sung and preached. Seated
CHILDREN’S SERMON
THE FIRST READING Genesis 12:1-4a Bill Gay, lector
God’s call of Abram and Sarai has a clear purpose that through them all the families of the earth would gain a blessing. As they set out on their journey, they are accompanied by promises of land, nation, and a great reputation.
Word of God, word of life. | Thanks be to God.
PSALM 121
4
1I lift up my eyes | to the hills; from where is my | help to come?
2My help comes | from the LORD, the maker of heav- | en and earth.
3The LORD will not let your | foot be moved nor will the one who watches over you | fall asleep.
4Behold, the keep- | er of Israel will neither slum- | ber nor sleep; R
5the LORD watches | over you; the LORD is your shade at | your right hand;
6the sun will not strike | you by day, nor the | moon by night.
7The LORD will preserve you | from all evil and will | keep your life.
8The LORD will watch over your going out and your | coming in, from this time forth for- | evermore. R
THE SECOND READING Romans 4:1-5, 13-17
In the person and example of Abraham we discover that a right relationship with God does not involve earning a reward from God but entails trusting God’s promises. Abraham is the forebear and model for both Jews and Gentiles, because we too trust that ours is a God who gives life to the dead.
Word of God, word of life. | Thanks be to God.
Standing GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
5
Sung by the Choir
The Son of Man must be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. Repeat Acclamation
THE HOLY GOSPEL John 3:4-17
A curious Pharisee visits Jesus by night to learn from the teacher his friends reject. Jesus speaks to him about life in the Spirit and the kingdom of God.
Before the reading: The Holy Gospel according... | Glory to you, O Lord. After the reading: The Gospel of the Lord. | Praise to You, O Christ.
Seated SERMON
Pastor Jonathan Trapp Standing
HYMN 323 God Loved the World
6
APOSTLE’S CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

YOUTH
8th Grade Chalice Usage
On Sunday, January 8, we started using the chalices made by our 8th graders at 9 AM worship. Each 8th-grade Confirmation student had to answer, "What does Communion mean to you?"
From 2/19-3/5, the chalice used was painted by Natalie Tanzola. This is Natalie's interpretation: "For me, communion is a time to remember Jesus and come together as a community. The different colors on my chalice represent the body and blood of Christ."
