GATHERING

The Holy Spirit gathers us in unity on the first day of the week, the day of Christ’s resurrection.

THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation. | Amen.

Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.

We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight.

Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family. Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom.

At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit.

1

By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us heirs of your promise and servants of all.

We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ.

Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace, and love.

To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. | Amen.

As a reminder of the gift of baptism, the assembly may be sprinkled during the entrance hymn. As the congregation is invited forward for communion, individuals are encourage to dip the fingers in the water from the font and make the sign of the cross.

CHILDREN’S SERMON

THE FIRST READING Numbers 21:4-9

Sheila Zentner, lector

Though God provides food and water for the Israelites in the wilderness, they whine and grumble. They forget about the salvation they experienced in the exodus. God punishes them for their sin, but when they repent God also provides a means of healing: a bronze serpent lifted up on a pole.

From Mount Hor [the Israelites] set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; but the people became impatient on the way. The people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food.” Then the Lord sent poisonous serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord to take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live.” So Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live.

Word of God, word of life. | Thanks be to God.

Bow Down Your Ear

THE SECOND READING Ephesians 2:1-10

While we were dead in our sinfulness, God acted to make us alive as a gift of grace in Christ Jesus. We are saved not by what we do but by grace through faith. Thus our good works are really a reflection of God’s grace at work in our lives.

You were dead through the trespasses and sins in which you once lived, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient. All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else. But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God—not the result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.

Word of God, word of life. | Thanks be to God.

Standing GOSPEL
ACCLAMATION

THE HOLY GOSPEL

John 3:14-21

To explain the salvation of God to the religious leader, Nicodemus, Jesus refers to the scripture passage quoted in today’s first reading. Just as those who looked upon the bronze serpent were healed, so people will be saved when they behold Christ lifted up on the cross.

Before the reading: The Holy Gospel according... | Glory to you, O Lord.

[Jesus said:] “Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

“Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.”

The Gospel of the Lord. | Praise to You, O Christ.

APOSTLE’S CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.*

On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Kneeling or seated PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

6

Each portion of the prayers concludes: Hear us, O God. | Your mercy is great. At the conclusion of the prayers: Amen Trusting in God’s promise to reconcile all things, let us pray for the church, the well-being of creation, and a world in need.

A brief silence.

Gracious God, your love unites. Give the global church the vision and will to cooperate in ministry for the building up of your kingdom. Increase inter-religious understanding and ecumenical dialog. Make your church a sanctuary for all fleeing persecution, disaster, and war, especially in Israel and Palestine, Sudan, Congo, and Ukraine. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Incarnate God, your love enlightens. Open our hearts and minds to fresh understandings of our faith and our ears to listen carefully to our neighbors. Deepen our love for you and for one another. Teach us to pray for our enemies. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Righteous God, your love liberates. We give thanks for those who courageously witness to your liberating love, especially Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth, renewers of society, whom we commemorate today. Free all people from the evils of racism, religious strife, and hatred. Hear us, O God.

Your mercy is great.

Merciful God, your love heals. Care tenderly for all those whose loved ones perished from pandemic disease in every nation. Strengthen and provide rest for health care workers, first responders, and caregivers. Relieve all who live with chronic illness and pain, and those who need healing in any way, especially…

Hear us, O God.

Your mercy is great.

Spirit, you abide with your people. Sustain our community. This Lent we lift before you the prayer concerns of Midtown, especially

Hear us, O God.

Your mercy is great.

Abiding God, your love saves. Those who died in the faith are made alive in Christ, especially…

We give thanks for your promise that we also will be raised to newness of life. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Accompany us on our journey, God of grace, and receive the prayers of our hearts, through Jesus Christ, our Savior.

Amen.

Love’s Endeavor, Love’s Expense

Russell Schulz-Widmar

Morning glory, starlit sky, soaring music, scholar's truth, | flight of swallows, autumn leaves, memory's treasure, grace of youth: | open are the gifts of God, gifts of love to mind and sense; | hidden is love's agony, love's endeavor, love's expense.

Love that gives, gives evermore, gives with zeal, with eager hands, | spares not, keeps not, all outpours, ventures all, its all expends. | Drained is love in making full, bound in setting others free, | poor in making many rich, | weak in giving power to be.

Therefore he who shows us God helpless hangs upon the tree; | and the nails and crown of thorns tell of what God’s love must be. | Here is God: no monarch he, throned in easy state to reign; | here is God whose arms of love aching, spent, the world sustain.

Standing OFFERTORY HYMN

OFFERING PRAYER

Jesus, you are the bread of life and the host of this meal. Bless these gifts that we have gathered that all people may know your goodness. Feed us not only with this holy food but with hunger for justice and peace. We pray this in your name. | Amen

GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you. | And also with you.

Lift up your hearts! | We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. | It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. You call your people to cleanse their hearts and prepare with joy for the paschal feast, that, renewed in the gift of baptism, we may come to the fullness of your grace. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

9

O God, Creator of our wilderness world, O God, Savior of the lost, O God, Comforter of the sick and suffering, we give you thanks for your everlasting might; we glorify you for your covenant of mercy.

For forty days you cleansed the earth with the waters of the flood. For forty days you illumined Moses with the words of your law. For forty years you fed your people with manna from heaven.

You became truly human in Jesus our brother.

For forty days, with fasting and prayer, he renounced the power of the devil.

On the night before he died he took bread, and gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying:

This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Transform us, O God, with your lively Spirit.

Make this food into manna for our journey, the body and blood of your Son.

Teach us your words of wisdom and justice.

Renew the whole earth with baptismal grace.

10

At the last, lead all your pilgrim people through our wilderness to your Easter garden.

To you, O God, Creator, Savior, Comforter, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be our worship and praise, adoration and thanksgiving, now and forever. Amen.

Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray…

COMMUNITY

Hunger Walk Run 2024 is less than two weeks away and Team Redeemer needs you! Here are some frequently asked questions about the event:

Q: I’m interested in joining Team Redeemer to walk (and maybe run), but where exactly is the Home Depot Backyard?

A: The Home Depot Backyard is off Northside Drive next to Mercedes Benz Stadium on the site of the old Georgia Dome.

Q: Got it! But where do I park?

A: There is ample parking in the decks around the stadium, and you can prepay for parking by clicking here: Mercedes Benz Stadium Parking. MARTA is always a great option if you don’t want to drive (closest station is Vine City).

Q: How do I support Team Redeemer if I can’t come to the Home Depot Backyard on March 10?

A: You can register at http://engage.acfb.org/goto/TeamRedeemer2024 (and get a cool t-shirt mailed to you) and then walk wherever/whenever it’s convenient for you. Or you can make a donation to Team Redeemer (same link!) to benefit our Lutheran Community Food Ministry, as well as the Atlanta Community Food Bank and Inspiritus
