MAUNDY THURSDAY On Maundy Thursday we emerge from our general Lenten wilderness wandering and are met with tangible objects: towel, basin, bread, table, and bare feet. Tonight, Jesus offers us something to carry with us as we emerge from the pandemic: a new commandment to love one another. “Maundy” originates from the Latin “mandatum” meaning “commandment.” Jesus first shows his disciples how to obey his commandment by humbling himself in service toward others. Then he tells them, and us, to love as he loved us. Our worship service mirrors the lengthening shadows of the evening of Jesus’ last supper. At the end of worship, the altar and chancel are stripped bare in preparation for the darkness and grief of Good Friday.
