In her novel Beloved (1987), Nobel Prize winning author Tony Morrison describes life for an African American community in Cincinnati, Ohio, before and after the Civil War in the 1850s and 1870s Cincinnati, situated on the Ohio River, is on the border between slave state Kentucky and free state Ohio. Baby Suggs, an important female leader of the community, has passed on by the time the novel opens in 1873, but through memory and flashbacks, she is present throughout the narrative This will allow us to consider the nature of her influence as, first, a "senior citizen" leader of the community and then her constant presence as a recent ancestor as the community deals with tragedy and conflict.
The study can lead to a fruitful discussion about aging through the lens of this fictional character drawn out of history and the role of departed ancestors in African and African American traditions We will also consider the career of Beah Richards, the actress who plays Baby Suggs in the 1998 Jonathan Demme film adaptation produced by Oprah Winfrey
Ms. Richards, who was nominated for an Oscar as Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 1967 for Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, was 78 when she created the role of Baby Suggs in the Oprah Winfrey film She passed away two years later in 2000 Baby Suggs plays a crucial role in the conclusion of the novel when she returns to life to encourage her granddaughter Denver to step out and leave her haunted home and seek help for her mother, Sethe, and Beloved.
Morrison believed that history was most effectively presented through fiction inspired by the past. We will allow the historical narrative of Beloved, its film adaptation, and the long career of Beah Richards to serve as a way to consider some of the roles played by society's oldest members and how that can speak to us about current concerns and conditions

Month of November
One of the ways we walk alongside children in foster care is by helping Goshen Valley provide them with Christmas gifts. Each child gets to choose a few things they want for Christmas, and we get to make their Christmas wishes come through by using their Amazon list. It's an easy way to make a big difference for kids in our community! Watch for announcements about how to participate.
