Catholic Update

Liguorian, a longtime staple in thousands of Catholic homes, has served the faithful for almost 110 years. The awardwinning flagship of Liguori Publications offers timely articles and columns by priests, religious, and laypeople. Catholics find the magazine a spiritually uplifting must-read, just as people did in the early 1900s.

In 1911, a few Redemptorist seminarians in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, created a magazine for their families and confreres. Originally published periodically, the order made it a monthly magazine in 1913 and changed its name to Liguorian in honor of St. Alphonsus Liguori, the founder of the Redemptorist congregation.

For three decades, the magazine continued to be published from the seminary in Wisconsin. When Fr. Donald F. Miller was seminary rector and editor of Liguorian, he encouraged the students to write for the magazine, which began to earn national recognition and prominence.

In 1947, Fr. Miller and ten Redemptorist priests relocated Liguorian and the rest of the publishing ministry, to a onetime resort about twenty-five miles south of St. Louis. There, Fr. Miller established Liguori Publications to carry on the mission of Liguorian and develop other ways to reach out to Catholics.

Liguorian became a widely circulated Catholic magazine in North America with hundreds of thousands of subscribers. In addition to its strong spiritual content and plainlanguage approach, it grew on the strength of “roadmen,” Redemptorist preachers who traveled the country reaching out to parishes and Catholics.

That parish preaching ministry continues today with Redemptorist serving at weekend Masses and telling congregations about Liguori Publications and Liguorian subscriptions.

Since its founding, Liguorian has been a cherished companion of Catholics. While reinforcing spiritual beliefs with inspiration and insight, Liguorian also provides fresh perspectives on faith to give readers what they want most from a Catholic magazine. Thought-provoking stories and columns and attractive design make the magazine an indispensable part of the spiritual life of the faithful in today’s fast-paced world.

Liguorian conveys a consistent joyful message of God’s plentiful redemption. In its tone and material, it communicates timely pastoral messages to Catholics on matters of faith, Christian living, and social justice in order to continue their conversion to Christ. The magazine shares the best elements of Catholic spirituality and traditions to help readers navigate the contemporary world assisted by their faith.

In addition to Liguorian, which celebrated its centennial in 2013, Liguori Publications produces some of the most widely used parish materials in the country, as well as books designed for people exploring faith. We have thousands of printed products, hundreds of which are also available as ebooks.

After Mass has ended, send forth the faithful with help to navigate life. Send parishioners forth with a magazine that reinforces what you preach. For more than 100 years, Liguorian has provided encouragement and guidance, helping Catholics apply the gospel message to life.
