North Cornwall Explore Cornwall’s dramatic north coast, where the Atlantic meets the rugged land.

C

ornwall’s inimitable north coast is a world of extremities and contradictions. Rugged cliffs meet golden sands, while imposing headlands give way to sheltered coves. The winding coast path is intersected by beautiful beaches and pretty harbour villages, allowing you to pause and take in the awe-inspiring views that greet you at every turn. Whether you take to the surf or simply admire it from the dunes, there is something enigmatically life-affirming about this stretch of coast. Maybe it’s the fresh sea air, the sound of crashing waves against the shore, or perhaps just knowing that you are as far away as you can be from the hubbub of city life – physically and otherwise. Whatever it is, this landscape just makes you feel alive.

Beach

Wherever you might be staying on the north coast, we can say with confidence that you won’t be far from a golden stretch of sand. One of the great draws of the peninsula is knowing that each morning you can set off on a different track and stumble upon a new beach – if you’re lucky, you might even find a small slice of paradise all to yourselves.

One of our favourites is Crantock, roughly halfway up the north coast, just outside of Newquay. It’s a typical north coast beach, ticking all the boxes... grassy dunes gradually inclining to reveal a panorama of flat sand, framed on either side by green-capped headland. It’s the perfect spot for building sandcastles and, of course, surfing. Off-season on a blustery sunny day it’s a wonderful space for children and dogs to run off some energy,

and popular in the summer to escape the busier beaches of neighbouring Newquay.

The north coast is imbued with romantic legends, and Crantock has its very own. Low tide reveals a smattering of small hollows and caves punctuating the headland. Venturing into one of these, you might well discover the forlorn engravings, supposedly of love-struck local Joseph Prater, carved into the rock in the early 1900s to commemorate a lost love: “Mar not my face but let me be, Secure in this lone cave by the sea, Let the wild waves around me roar, Kissing my lips for evermore.”

From May to mid-September, the walk up through Fern Pit gardens to the café is rewarded by fresh crab sandwiches or a cream tea on arrival. Order the freshly caught lobster or crab, cooked ready to eat. Why not take some home for later?

Walk Trevose Head This circular route takes in many interesting natural features and breathtaking vantage points. The walk can start from any section, but a great place to begin is either Constantine Bay – walking north towards Trevose Head – or Harlyn Bay. The latter has more parking and veers northwest along the coast path towards Cataclews Point before hooking round to the alluring Mother Ivey’s Bay – home to Padstow Lifeboat Station. Either route culminates with Trevose Head as the midway marker, with the proud Trevose Lighthouse and impressive collapsed sea cave, known as Round Hole, to admire. The surrounding views from this headland are pretty unbeatable, stretching as far west as St Ives and east toward Morwenstow.

Pentyak The house on the hill.

T

he farmhouse on the hill: the literal translation for Cornish-named Pentyak. The re-modelled 1970s bungalow doesn’t much resemble its Celtic namesake these days since its striking transformation by current owners Tamar Tammes and Mike Ross. The renovation, which took 2 painstaking years to reach its completion in July 2014, is now a stunning family home by the sea and an immensely popular property within the Perfect Stays collection.

Tamar – who was raised in Devon – and Mike had holidayed together in Cornwall a number of times as a family, and with a steadily growing extended family, they wanted to find a home-from-home where everyone could come together, explains Tamar: “It seemed only natural to return here with a family. We wanted to create somewhere where our whole family – young and old – would feel at home, and a place where other families holidaying in Cornwall would feel welcome.” This sentiment is echoed in the considered design of Pentyak, which sits perched in the hillside with dramatic views over Harlyn Bay, North Cornwall. The couple enlisted the expertise of Truro-based architects Catchfrench Design, who listened carefully to Tamar and Mike’s needs, helping steer the project.

The owners were keen to enlist the skills of local contractors and artisan craftsmen throughout the build of Pentyak, and Perfect Stays’ involvement began long before the house that stands now was found. Living in Scotland, Tamar and Michael spent a lot of time travelling back and forth, viewing numerous properties and researching plots of land and, when they were unable to, Perfect Stays stepped in and helped out where possible with the search and recommending local contractors. As fate would have it, the couple’s search eventually brought them round full circle to the house opposite where they had previously holidayed. Perfect Stays put the couple in touch with talented craftsman Charlie Turner of Broad and Turner, who would play an intrinsic part in creating some of Pentyak’s iconic features. Originally enlisted to create the bespoke solid oak kitchen, Charlie went on to design and make the enormous dining table, living room shelving, bespoke treehouse in the garden and the spectacular internal stair slide among many other items.

The project wasn’t without its challenges, however. One particular obstacle resulted in enhancing the main focal point of Pentyak; the axis on which the whole project centralised and the feature that gives Pentyak its name: the view. The sweeping floor-to-ceiling angled windows are reminiscent of a ship’s bridge, or air traffic control tower, but their iconic positioning wasn’t intended from the offset. The idea was introduced by international lighting designer, and Tamar’s brother, Andre Tammes, the man behind the lights of the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam and the Sydney Harbour Bridge’s 75th anniversary light display. Angling the glass inwards at the base allows for a much clearer and unblemished appreciation of the view, particularly at night when interior lights would otherwise reflect on the glass. It’s easy to be preoccupied by the ever changing blues and greens of the daytime view, but many people aren’t aware what they’re missing once the sun has set: the passing lights of ships and fishing trawlers, the faint sweep of light from Trevose Lighthouse tucked just over the headland, the moon and the stars unpolluted by city lights. And so it was decided, much to the contractors’ despair.

Once completed, Tamar and Michael moved in with the help of the entire Perfect Stays team, and the first night was celebrated in true seaside fashion with fish and chips and a toast with a glass of Camel Valley.

Pentyak is available to rent year round from £2050 for 3 nights, or from £2450 for a week.

The flowing open-plan living space that incorporates the dining room, kitchen and living room is the central hub of the house, affording sociability, easy catering for large numbers, cosy intimacy and an elevated view over the enclosed garden, allowing for a watchful eye to be kept on playing children. The calming neutral colour palettes – Little Greene’s Dash of Soot for the kitchen units and Knightsbridge for the breakfast island – are a soothing contrast to the vivid colours that comprise the coastal backdrop. The Cornish stacked slate fireplace is a real favourite: a contemporary amalgamation of an unusual design and traditional, local materials.

Much of the footprint of the house remains largely unchanged; the 4 bedroom bungalow was extended upwards to include a further 2 bedrooms and elevated views over the sea. The former garage has been incorporated into a children’s den, complete with portholes, Fat Boy bean bags and Xbox360, offering a handy second 10

Eating Out Devon is positively brimming with gorgeous country pubs, chic restaurants, cosy cafés and traditional tearooms, all showcasing the locale’s fantastic produce and ales. Foodies are spoilt for choice, from Mitch Tonk’s Dartmouth seafood and grill, The Seahorse, to Michael Caine’s restaurant at Exmoor’s Kentisbury Grange Hotel, not forgetting Master Chef winner Anton Piotrowski’s Michelin-starred country pub, The Treby Arms in Sparkwell. The Coffee Cabin is an adorable café and farm shop on the waterfront in Appledore. Owners and partners Richard and Martin are the loveliest people you could meet, with a super friendly team. Most importantly though, the cakes are fabulous, and they serve truly divine breakfasts and lunch. Both dog and family friendly, this is one place you’ll return to again and again.

Beaches Narrowing down our favourite beaches in Devon is an unenviable task – there are simply too many gems to choose from! On the plus side, it means you’re never far from either a quiet, sheltered cove or a large expanse of sand – there’s something for everyone, whatever the mood.

The famous surf break at Bantham, in the South Hams, boasts unrivalled views of the iconic Burgh Island, immortalised by both Agatha Christie, in one of her bestselling classics, and folk rock local Ben Howard, in tribute to one of his favourite surf spots. It’s easy to see why this bewitching location has captured the imaginations of some of our greatest talents and remains a huge draw today. A day at Bantham isn’t complete without a visit to the 14th century Sloop Inn, nestled among rows of thatched cottages, serving delicious pub food and local ales.

If you’re looking for something equally beguiling yet less frequented, then Mothecombe beach on the river Erme is for you. This privately-owned sandy beach in south Devon is paradise found. Accessed via a narrow woodland path that will be tricky for some, Mothecombe is nevertheless the perfect family getaway and a peaceful spot well worth venturing off the beaten track to discover.

On The Water The calmer estuaries are ideal for supping, kayaking and sailing. The white sails of scudding yachts are an iconic sight across Salcombe bay and Dartmouth. We love dinghy sailing in Salcombe, gliding along the azure waters, exploring numerous coves and spotting seals. Devon’s waters are also perfect for a spot of wild swimming. If you haven’t tried it then you must, it’s a far cry from the steamy heat and chlorine of your local pool.

Activities

Inland Dartmoor is a haven for walkers, pony trekkers and anyone else who loves to immerse themselves in its wild beauty. The moor is home to 2 waterfalls, Becky Falls and Canonteign Falls, both well worth a visit as a break from the beach, along with the enchanting Wistman’s Wood. Cycling on the Tarka Trail is a great way to take in some of the best bits of Devon – perhaps take a picnic to enjoy in one of the many serene stops en route. However, if you’d simply like to relax and unwind as the Devonshire coast and countryside rolls by, then climb aboard the Dartmouth Steam Railway and take in some gorgeous scenery.

No waiting for a table in a crowded restaurant, and no being limited to the confines of the menu – just a personalised service, tailored for you.

Taking a break is all about indulging a little; treating yourself and loved ones to an experience that’s truly unique. Whether it’s a romantic candlelit supper for 2, or a dinner party for 20 covers, you’ll be suitably wined and dined in an experience befitting your occasion. You won’t even need to do the washing up! The service is perfect if you have specific dietary requirements, or simply if you fancy eating as your whim demands; crucially, you’ll be given time to spend together without one member perennially detained in the kitchen.

In fact, why not go one step further? What could be more exhilarating than catching your own supper off the north Cornish coast, before it is prepared by the chef back on shore – a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience. Heading out from Padstow harbour aboard a proper working fishing boat, Kerry Marie, you’ll enjoy a revealing insight into the provenance of the food we eat.

“If you love food, it’s really interesting to see how it’s caught and where it comes from,” says Georgie, “how to treat different types of fish. It really is very seasonal; depending on various factors and time of year, we might catch lobster, crab, cod, mackerel.…” But, whatever you happen to haul in that day, one thing is certain: you won’t find fish fresher than the bounty you bring home yourself. There’s something endlessly rewarding and primal about tucking into food you’ve caught personally, prepared before your eyes by a talented chef.

Of course, while many guests love simply to sit back and immerse themselves in the experience, some relish the

opportunity to get their hands dirty. Georgie can incorporate a cookery class into the day if you would like to get more actively involved with the preparation and cooking itself. Whatever, your preference, that’s fine. “It’s all about you and what you want to get out of the experience. After all, we all want to be made to feel special on holiday, and that’s why I’m here!”

With Georgie in the kitchen, you’re in safe hands. “I was always obsessed with fish and cooking from a very young age,” she explains. “I did work experience with Rick Stein in Padstow aged 16 and I knew straightaway that this was what I had to do! I fell in love with Cornwall and later returned to train at The Seafood Restaurant and St Petroc’s Bistro, learning so much from Rick. His style of food is unpretentious, relaxed and all about the produce; it’s not overly fancy – it’s all about letting the ingredients sing.”

Judging by the array of delicious food that Georgie serves up, she seems to have taken note. The presentation is exquisite yet honest and unfussy. The smells and colours emanating from the table are tantalising, surpassed only by the taste itself. When you have such fantastic produce at your disposal, you can let the food do the talking, not to understate Georgie’s flair for bringing it all together. West Cornwall A richly diverse landscape that really is a beast of its own.

he western tip of Cornwall encompasses some of the region’s most diverse landscapes, from dramatic Land’s End down to the Lizard Peninsula and back around to the sheltered estuaries of the south coast. The Lizard really is a location like no other, with unique geology and wildlife, from its outcrop of green serpentine rock to the rare Cornish Chough. West Cornwall plays host to a range of fabulous sandy beaches, including Porthcurno, Gwithian, Praa Sands and Poldhu. West Penwith is wild and beautiful; take a drive from St Ives to Land’s End, passing old villages, engine stacks with stunning sea views. Wildlife

The Lizard Peninsula is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with fabulous flora and fauna. In fact the Lizard can lay claim to being the best place in the UK to find rare plants. Stand Up! The Perfect Stays’ team spends a day on the water with Harlyn Surf School.

M

any of you will already know that an integral part of the Perfect Stays ethos is to try out restaurants, spas, locations, walks and activities that we recommend to our customers (it’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it!) to ensure we are always championing the best the area has to offer. Having booked many of our guests into water activities with local providers, I thought it would be a good idea to round up the Perfect Stays team and see who would be up for trying some new extracurricular activities.

We decided that a stand-up paddle-boarding experience (supping) was on everyone’s list to try so before anyone could change their mind, I booked our session with Harlyn Surf School.

One bright summer’s evening, we headed over to the riverside in Wadebridge, which joins the Camel Estuary at Padstow. The estuary is recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and its popular cycle path (Camel Trail) and freshwater river are explored all year round by visitors and locals alike.

Our friendly representative from Harlyn Surf School, Sarah, greeted us and zipped us into our wetsuits and buoyancy aids.

Whilst the others looked perfectly suited to the wetsuit way, I did not; with squished feet in my sea shoes and an aid which refused to tie around my chest…. the others found this most

amusing! Safety talk complete and embarrassing mug shot taken, we were ready and raring to get on board and learn a thing or two about supping! Stepping into the water, we tentatively knelt on our boards and balanced ourselves with ease. Paddle in hand, we gracefully floated along the water and plugged away at the current until we had a decent glide.

After demonstrating some simple manoeuvres, and with helpful 1-on-1 guidance to build our confidence and abilities on the board, Sarah was keen to bring us to our feet. Starting strong, we already felt like pros so we placed the paddle on the board and, with eyes forward to steady ourselves, we moved from all fours, put our feet flat on the board and slowly pushed to a crouching position. One by one, we stood – united – feeling victorious!

At this point, my confidence was high and for a moment I was leader of the pack, steaming ahead, taking in the beautiful surroundings and feeling somewhat like Pocahontas…. and then, the wobbles began! While trying an exercise which usually enhances your balancing skills, I flew face first into the water, much to the team’s entertainment! Now, I like to think that I have elegance and poise, but trying to pull myself back onto my board with soggy land underfoot and a large buoyance aid restricting my movement, made the motion more of a clamber

than a climb! It was not my finest moment to say the least but with some firm pulling from Sarah, I was back on my board and catching up with the others.

only person to take a tumble that evening and as the summer sun faded, we slowly paddled back to base, enthralled by our latest adventure.

Whilst I am not the water creature I thought I was, supping is enjoyed all over the world and is a fantastic sport with a very interesting background. People have been standing on small watercraft as a way to get around for thousands of years, with the first recording found in ancient Egypt. Popularity grew in the ‘90s when Laird Hamilton took to the water with a canoe paddle and a large surfboard as a way to cross train. Fast forward to modern day, and people compete in long distance races and surf SUP international competitions, use it as a form of gentle exercise and more recently, SUP Yoga has taken the fitness world by storm!

Since our time out on the estuary, I was keen to re-attempt supping and have enjoyed the sturdy waters of Polkerris Beach. Clearly the skills taught by Sarah stuck with me, as my second attempt proved much more successful with practise. My colleagues have also taken advantage of the clear waters of the north coast of Cornwall and often explore the dynamic coastline.

Some of us have even taken these new skills to the turquoise waters of Bali. It is a great way to feel at one with the sea and burn many calories in the process!

But back to me, on the estuary, ego bruised and attempting to re-stand. With Sarah watching over me to ensure I was still smiling, I felt determined to stand on my own accord and I rose up with purpose…. a little too much purpose because I over stepped and nosedived back into the water! Determined not to become disheartened, I climbed back onto my board ready for round 3, but to save myself any further embarrassment, I remained kneeling for the rest of the trip. Thankfully, I wasn’t the

Pawprints in the sand With its richly diverse landscape, the South West really is the perfect destination for dog lovers.

O

ne of the great advantages of holidaying at home is the ease of bringing your beloved four-legged friend with you. For so many of us, our dog is the heart and soul of the family, so if taking a break is all about spending quality time with the ones you love, then why leave one of them behind? If anywhere in the UK is set up for dogs, then it’s the South West. With a plethora of beautiful beaches, miles of rugged coastline, wild moorland and wooded valleys to explore, it’s the perfect playground for the pup.

Nothing beats a brisk stroll across the open countryside, immersing yourself in its untamed, primal beauty. Why not escape to the wilderness of Dartmoor, Exmoor or Bodmin Moor, where you’ll feel as far from civilisation as it’s possible to be? If, on the other hand, you prefer cultivated beauty, take an amble through some of our glorious subtropical gardens. Four-legged visitors (of the well behaved variety) are welcomed on leads in most of the big gardens including The Lost Gardens of Heligan, Trebah, the Eden Project, and Bicton Park Botanical Garden.

Whether visiting or lucky enough to call it home, it’s this rich topography that makes the south west such a huge draw for those with a four-legged friend. “It’s the best place to own a dog!” beams Rosita, who lives in West Cornwall with her excitable young boxer, Zenna. “The landscape is so diverse that you can mix up your dog walks with trips to the coast and dunes, as well as the woods and endless rolling fields.”

Whilst it’s worth remembering that many beaches enforce a seasonal dog ban (Easter to October), there are plenty of opportunities for both sandy paws and solitude, if you are willing to venture away from the welltrodden paths. “With a huge array of little coves around every corner, you don’t have to go far to get away from

the busy spots,” explains Rosita. One of Zenna’s favourite beaches is Boat Cove, just around the corner from Marazion, boasting magical views of St Michael’s Mount, without all the bustle of the neighbouring hotspots.

“Dogs can play and swim here for hours, while us owners kick back and enjoy the peaceful beauty that this unique part of the Cornish coast has to offer.”

Of course, all this exploring is thirsty work, so complete the walk with a well-earned refreshment at the nearby Victoria Inn. Muddy boots and dogs are made very welcome in the bar area and garden of this stunning 12th century Cornish inn, home to Monty the spaniel.

Offering delicious, award-winning food in a welcoming atmosphere, it’s the ideal end to your mini adventure.

Another great advocate of this doggy paradise is Jackie Warden, of Happy Dogs Day Care, who regularly enjoys beautiful, dog-friendly walks through the woods and along the banks of Loe Bar, near Porthleven – the south west’s largest natural body of fresh water. “It’s perfect, for both dogs and their owners,” says Jackie. “The dogs can play and cool off in Loe Pool, while we admire the abundance of wildlife and amazing scenery in this gorgeous part of Cornwall.” The woodland gives way to glorious glimpses of the rugged coast, moody in the misty morning haze, and unrivalled views over the Atlantic. If you’re exploring the north coast, why not treat your pup to a luxury homemade doggy ice-cream at Perranporth’s Pavilion Ice? It’s the perfect way to cool off and, after all, it’s not just the owners who deserve to be pampered!
