how to select the right paint brush and roller Choosing the correct equipment for your painting job can be the difference between a mediocre finish and a fantastic finish. There are many different types of brushes and rollers to choose from and various painting techniques.

T

op quality paints not only give you easier and better coverage, but are longer lasting and easier to clean than low-grade paints. Budget for the best ‐ it pays in the long run. SAFETY Always keep tools and materials away from children. Read the instructions before beginning your project. Never pour paint or paint residue down the drain. 1. PAINT BRUSHES AND THEIR USES The best width brush for the job: 12mm: 25mm: Best for small jobs and touch-up work such as toys, chairs and timber trim. 38mm: Suitable for furniture, small panels, window frames, trellis, mouldings, shutters and down-pipes. 50mm: For small to medium size work doors, screens, table tops, railings and cabinets. 63mm: A handy size for outdoor furniture, cupboards, gutters, eaves and doors. 75mm: For medium to large areas. Fence posts and rails, floor boards, skirtings and fascias. 100mm and above: For all large flat areas. Most suitable for walls, floors, ceilings, roof, fences. Long handled cutter brushes: Specially made for door and window frames and ceiling/wall corner sections. Popular brushes for finishing after roller painting. The tapered edged tip ensures accurate cutting in while the long handle helps to control the stroke 2. SELECTING A BRUSH A professional looking paint job is easier when the right brush is used. Avoid cheap brushes with short bristles and insufficient bristle pack. Choose a brush made of full length fine quality hog bristles. Quality bristles provide more efficient pick-

up and steady release (lay-off) of paint, resulting in a more even, streak-free finish. A good brush holds more paint, makes paint application smoother and reduces paint splattering. A quick way to check this is to feel the pack of bristle. It should feel full and slightly resilient. The greater the bristle pack, the better the paint holding capacity and the smoother the layoff. Although cheaper brushes will not last as long as premium grade brushes they are quite suitable for the occasional job where finish, quality and brush life are not critical. 3. THE RIGHT BRUSH FOR THE PAINT Heavy oil-based gloss and paints, primers and varnishes require a medium bristle length, solidly packed brush for effective control. Brush the final coat on lightly with the bristle tips to achieve an even nostreak finish. Acrylic (water -based) paints are best applied with a longer bristle brush. Synthetic filament brushes ideal for use with acrylic paint. These brushes wash up easily and give a smooth finish. Be sure to wash out dry paint forming at the heel of the brush - especially in hot weather. When applying wood stain to rough sawn surfaces use a shorter bristle brush. For staining fine surfaces always use a better quality brush Tips for better painting. Prepare the surface carefully before painting. Thorough cleaning and smooth sanding will ensure a better finish. Flick the brush bristles back and forth before use to remove dust and loose bristles. Hold the brush like a pencil, using long, steady strokes. Dip the brush only halfway into the paint. Remove excess by tapping gently against top of can. Paint with the brush tip - not the sides.

diyprojects homesguide Brush paint on dry area and work into wet area to allow overlap to blend. Start at the top when painting walls. 4. CLEANING BRUSHES Rinse in the recommended solvent for the paint used. Then wash thoroughly in warm soapy water. Rinse well, shake out excess water. Comb the bristles straight and hand shape them while still damp. Hang up to dry. Wrap bristles in brown paper and store the brush flat and out of direct sunlight. Be sure that when stored the bristles are not in contact with other objects. 5. SUCCESSFUL ROLLER PAINTING Various types of rollers: Universal Covers: Polyester cover suitable for use with ALL paints including full gloss enamels. Can be used on smooth and semi-smooth surfaces and gives a finish second to none. Long Nap Covers: Polyester cover suitable for ALL paints on semi rough surfaces such as brickwork and masonry. Has exceptional paint holding capacity so is also suitable for semi smooth surfaces where heavy coverage is more important than finish. Wall Cover: Ideal for all interior broad wall surfaces. Ceiling Cover: Ideal for ceilings providing a smooth thick paint film. Mohair Blend Covers: This cover gives the ultimate finish to full and semi gloss enamels on smooth surfaces. The most suitable cover for applying polyurethanes, epoxy resins and fibreglass coatings. Lamswool Fabric: 100% lambswool specially processed for applying paints. Ideal for PVA and acrylic paints. Coarse Texture Foam Cover: Specially designed loops in this cover lift texture paints into peaks for a rich stucco look. Applies all texture finishes in one step. Clean by simply hosing out excess material. Medium Texture Foam Cover: Specially woven loops lift texture paints into peaks for a medium texture finish. Applies all texture finishes in one step. Clean by simply hosing out excess material.

Fine Texture Foam Cover: A very fine foam material gives a fine textured finish. Applies all texture finishes in one step. Easy cleaning by simply hosing out excess material. Gloss Foam Rollers: For use with full and semi-gloss enamels on smaller areas such as kitchen cupboards where a mirror finish is required. Corrugated Rollers (foam): For use on 75mm corrugated roof and wall sheeting. Fits standard cage frame. Ideal for use with full and semi gloss enamels and roofing paints. 6. BRUSH CARE AND STORAGE A quality brush will last year after year and can continue to apply paint smoothly if it is looked after. There are some things you should not do: Never stir paint with a brush. Never let a brush soak in water for a prolonged period - it will become floppy. Never use a wide brush to paint pipes or narrow strips. This causes the brush to “fishtail”. Never leave a brush to harden. Clean immediately after use. Never rest a brush on its bristles. The weight will curl them, ruining the flagged tips. 7. SELECTING THE RIGHT ROLLER NAP Roller sleeves are sold in short, medium and long nap lengths. A short nap, usually about 5 to 8mm deep, does not hold as much paint as the others, but is the best kind to use with glossy paint since it leaves a thin, very smooth coating. The all-purpose medium nap, about 8 -12mm deep, holds any type of paint well and produces a softlooking stippled effect. The pile of a long nap, about 20mm, works a heavy load of paint into the irregularities of a textured, damaged or extremely porous surface, and can create a deeply stippled effect on any surface. 8. PREPARING FOR ROLLER PAINTING Rollers need no special preparation unless you are using gloss paint and a new,

fluffy short-nap roller. In that case, prime the roller by sloshing it in soapy water to remove loose strands of material. Rinse thoroughly and make sure the nap is dry before you begin. For most rooms, a 1.2 metre extension handle is all you will need to reach high places. Loading the roller with paint Use a roller tray. Crimp a sheet of aluminium foil securely round the rim of the tray. Half fill the well of the tray with paint and dip the roller in. It should be a little less than half submerged. Lift the roller and roll it down the sloped grating two or three times - but not back into the paint. Dip the roller into the paint once more and roll it on the grating until the cover has been evenly saturated. Do not overload the roller or it can drip and slide, producing an uneven coat. 9. PAINTING ACTION Start with a Zig Zag: To paint a ceiling, begin about 1 metre from the corner and roll towards the corner - the first stroke with a newly loaded roller should always be away from you. Without lifting the roller from the surface, continue to make a “W” pattern about 1 metre square. To paint a wall, push the roller upwards on the first stroke away from you and complete the “M” pattern. The initial strokes spread the heaviest part of the paint load evenly over the section. Filling in: After completing an “M” or a “W”, begin filling in a 1 metre square by criss-crossing strokes of the roller without lifting it from the surface. Each stroke should be about 450mm to 600mm long. Use even pressure to avoid bubbles and blotches, and stop when the entire section is evenly covered with paint. Moving your roller in one direction may produce more of a stippled effect than moving it in the other . Bear this in mind when doing your final strokes. Move along to the next section, load the roller again and repeat the sequence.

yulefest in the blue mountains Yulefest began over twenty years ago in Australia’s internationally famous Blue Mountains. It has grown to become the major seasonal event of the Blue Mountains and Yulefest is now enjoyed annually by visitors from Sydney and beyond. Even if you can’t visit during the Yulefest season, the Blue Mountains enjoy four “European” style seasons, each with its own distinctive mood and style and we have accommodation to suit every taste and budget. Once upon a time, in Australia’s beautiful Blue Mountains when the snow lay round about, deep and crisp and even, in the depths of Winter when the icicles glistened and the log fires crackled, a group of (fairly) wise men came from far off Ireland. They were staying in a grand old Mountains Guesthouse and being Irish they said beggorahh! or something like, “It feels just like Christmas time at home.” “Mine host, prepare us some turkey and stuffing and plum pudding if you would and serve it round the fire.” Since those early days many more wise men and ladies and children from Australia and all over the world have travelled to the Blue Mountains every June, July and August to

enjoy a Northern Hemisphere style ‘Christmas in Winter’. Besides the crisp Blue Mountains’ air and great hospitality, revellers have enjoyed mulled wine and egg nog by the gallon, pulled bon-bons and worn silly hats, eaten turkey, ham, plum pudding and mince pies till they could burst, sat on Santa’s knee, sung carols round the fire till they were hoarse and drunk enough port to fill Sydney harbour. Along the way they have had the doubtful experience of meeting the ‘Hairy Fairy’, had dinner with that naughty Reg Livermore in all his incarnations, been under the tables during a wartime air raid, danced like crazy to the ‘Heartbeats’, had

www.homesguide.com.au

a ‘Fawlty Yulefest’, been shot at by bushrangers, tried (and given up) to work out ‘Who Killed Santa Claus’ (all seven of them) and been served by the crazy ‘Manuel’ (he’s from Barcelona you know!). Those wanting a quieter or more ‘refined’ time have enjoyed worldclass fine dining, private house parties, grand black tie balls and delightful carols round the grand piano. Most of all they have been to some of the greatest parties of all time at ‘Yulefest’ in Australia’s beautiful, world heritage listed, Blue Mountains.

Daughter to a 3rd generation grape growing father and a cabaret singing mother, she spent many years on the land making red wine until she finally decided in 2007 to hang up her muddy boots, travel and make music. tehching hsieh: one year performance 1980-1981 The presentation of One Year Performance 1980-1981 (commonly referred to as Time Clock Piece) at Carriageworks marks the first time a major solo work by Tehching Hsieh has been presented in Australia. This extraordinary work, the second of his One Year Performances, follows Hsieh as he punched a time clock in his studio, every hour on the hour, twenty-four hours a day, for an entire year. The installation comprises the documents the artist produced (photographs, film, time cards, statements) as he observed the passing of time in this relentlessly methodical manner over a gruelling year-long period. Celebrated Taiwanese-American performance artist Tehching Hsieh is internationally recognised as a leading practitioner of durational performance. Hsieh explores questions of time, life and being and his works are notable for their conceptual purity and physical extremity. He is most known for six durational performance pieces completed between 1978 and 2000. ONE YEAR PERFORMANCE 1978–1979 (CAGE PIECE) In this performance, which lasted from September 29, 1978 through September 30, 1979, the artist locked himself in an 11.6’ × 9’ × 8’ wooden cage, furnished only with a wash basin, lights, a pail, and a single bed. During

the year, he was not allowed to talk, to read, to write, or to listen to radio and TV. A lawyer, Robert Projansky, notarized the entire process and made sure the artist never left the cage during that one year. A friend came daily to deliver food, remove the artist’s waste, and take a single photograph to document the project. In addition, this performance was open to be viewed once or twice a month from 11am to 5pm. ONE YEAR PERFORMANCE 1980–1981 (TIME CLOCK PIECE) Documentation of this piece was exhibited at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 2009, using film, punch cards and photographs. This work was the first of Hsieh’s ever to be displayed in the UK at the Liverpool Biennial in 2010. ONE YEAR PERFORMANCE 1981–1982 (OUTDOOR PIECE) In his third one year performance piece, from September 26, 1981 through September 26, 1982, Hsieh spent one year outside, not entering buildings or shelter of any sort, including cars, trains, airplanes, boats, or tents. He moved around New York City with a packbag and a sleeping bag. ONE YEAR PERFORMANCE 1983-1984 (ROPE PIECE) In this performance, Hsieh and Linda Montano spent one year between 4 July 1983 and 4 July 1984 tied to each other with an 8-foot-long (2.4 m) rope. They had to stay in a same room while not allowed to touch each other until the end of the one year period. Both of them shaved their hair in the beginning of the year, and the performance was

www.homesguide.com.au

notarized initially by Paul Grassfield and later by Pauline Oliveros. ONE YEAR PERFORMANCE 1985–1986 (NO ART PIECE) For one year, Hsieh did no art, spoke no art, saw no art, read no art, and did not enter any museum or gallery. TEHCHING HSIEH 1986–1999 (THIRTEEN YEAR PLAN) At the beginning of this epic piece, Hsieh declared, “Will make Art during this time. Will not show it publicly.” This plan began on his 36th birthday, December 31, 1986, and lasted until his 49th birthday, December 31, 1999. At the end, on January 1, 2000 he issued his concluding report, “I kept myself alive. I passed the December 31st, 1999.” The report consisted of cutout letters pasted onto a single sheet of paper. THE PHILOSOPHY His pieces are not feats of stamina nor (consciously at least) motivated by a desire to suffer (though they have been described as ordeals), but rather are explorations of time and of struggle. According to critic Steve Shaviro, Hsieh’s work can be seen as being about imprisonment, solitude, work, time, homelessness, exposure, marriage/human relations, and the way in which art and life are related. Hsieh states his work is about “wasting time and freethinking”. Carriageworks 245 Wilson St, Eveleigh NSW 2015 Phone: (02) 8571 9099 Exhibition showing until 6th July 2014. www.carriageworks.com.au

through open brain surgery. There was a 1 in 5 chance of survival. My family had to say their goodbyes, as the surgeon couldn’t guarantee my survival. I can’t imagine the burden they had to carry through the ordeal. My heart still weighs heavy thinking of them during this time. After the surgery I recovered well. I still have many deficits, but I am alive and

But I am lucky to have a very supportive network of people in my life. One of the hardest parts of recovery for me was learning how to walk again. Such a basic function that we all take for granted. It took me months to walk on my own. It was really scary learning how to walk, even though it was something that I had been doing for the past 28yrs.

“After suffering a life threatening trauma, it really puts priorities in life into perspective. I was a fit, healthy 28 yr old when it happened. I know of more people that have passed away from a ruptured aneurysm than have survived. So I certainly count my lucky stars. Recovery is long and challenging. During this time I constantly asked “why me, why me”. I still don’t know the answer to that but I’ve come a long way since then. I’ve battled depression and still do. The feeling of helplessness during recovery is very destructive. Especially for such an independent person like myself.

I think the most challenging thing about recovery, closely followed by the daily physical battles, is the mental battle to get yourself through such a trauma. While I wouldn’t wish my fate on anyone, I know that it’s happened for a reason - I just haven’t worked out why yet! For one, I am a much better person than I was before. I always seek the positive in situations, and know that life is too short to be worried about petty issues. There is a bigger picture out there

- way more important than how much money you have or what kind of jeans you’re wearing! I feel good about the person I’ve become since the trauma. I don’t always feel good though. I still have days where I reflect on what’s happened and feel that life is unfair and that I’ve been hard done by. I’m single-sided deaf, I get headaches almost daily, I stumble and slur when I’m tired - my list goes on. But after I’ve had my cry, I remind myself that I am alive - and that is a privilege denied to many. I won’t lie, running my own business is challenging!! I’ve learnt a lot about myself too. My boundaries, how resilient I am, and how passionate I am about my message. I also work a full-time job to make ends meet, so I am working 7 days a week. It’s very challenging and mentally draining - but I remind myself about why I am doing this. I am doing this to push the importance of health and of how fragile your body is. I just want everyone to look after themselves! Visit: moreforme.net.au

winter heating tips.. choose the right heater this winter

F

or winter warmth, choosing the right heater (or heating source) is one part of the equation; preparing your home for energy efficient warmth is the other.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS VS. COST In recent years there has been a lot of focus on our carbon footprint – that’s the amount of carbon we produce when we use mainstream energy sources – like electricity and gas for example. It is important for all of us to reduce our impact on the environment. However, simply reducing your carbon

16

homesguideliving

footprint will not necessarily result in lower power bills and certainly won’t mean you have a warm and comfy home in winter – at least not without looking at the bigger picture. Consider your heating needs carefully, and then start planning. Your choice of home heating will come down to a few key decision points. Here are some questions to start asking yourself: Do you have an existing home or are you planning on building a new home? - There are a wide range of choices for both situations. When building a new home, pay attention to things like passive

www.homesguide.com.au

solar opportunities that can reduce the need for energy consuming heating appliances. Also be aware of the limitations you may have with choosing a heating source for an existing home. Type of home – Do you live in a house, apartment or townhouse. Some types of heating will not be available to you if you live in apartment for example. Ownership - Do you own or rent your home? If you’re renting, you might want to be able to take your heater with you when you move. Need – Do you need to heat a room or an entire home? Budget – There is the captial cost of

lifestyle homesguide

buying a heating appliance as well as installation and the ongoing cost to run it. No one wants to pay more than they should for home heating so think carefully about these aspects. Style – Do you want to simply heat your home or do you want an element of style, or a focal point in a main room? (Like a fireplace for example) Access to your preferred energy source – Electricity, gas, firewood and other fuels, are these readily available? Heating appliance types There is a wide variety of heating appliance types available today. No one heating type will be right for everyone. Each heating appliance type will have its pro’s and con’s based on things like: Initial purchase and installation cost, running costs and availability of the chosen fuel source. Here’s a short list: • Electric – includes radiant, convection, conductive (underfloor heating), spilt and ducted air conditioning. • Gas – includes radiant, convection, gas ducted heating • Wood – includes open fireplaces, slow combustion heaters & stoves and pellet heaters. • Ethanol – includes ethanol burning fireplaces. • Prepare your home for efficient, cost effective heating Choosing the right heating source may well play an important part of reducing your winter bills but there are other steps the homeowner can take to reduce the need for excessive energy consumption and to reduce their winter energy bills. Wear warm clothing -There’s no simpler way of keeping warm than by throwing on some extra clothes. Insulate your home – The energy consumption difference of heating a space with and without ceiling insulation for example can be as much as 30%. There are a number of options – some of which will depend on whether you

own an existing home, are renovating or building a new home. Consider the possibilities for wall and even underfloor insulation as well as ceiling insulation. If practical, open the shades or drapes on north facing windows during the day, this will allow the sun’s rays to heat parts of your home during the day. How old is your home – have you inspected your ceiling insulation? You may be surprised to find that your ceiling insulation needs attention. Close doors to rooms that are not occupied. Cover windows with heavy drapes, a lot of heat loss can occur through windows. Don’t try to ‘overheat’ your home – Typically during winter you only need to heat your home to around 24 degrees to be comfortable. More than this and you are simply throwing money down

www.homesguide.com.au

the drain. Depending on the age of your home and when insulation was installed, you may be surprised to find that your current ceiling insulation has lost its effectiveness or is missing in parts. We recently had a look up in the ceiling cavity of our home to find that our insulation was missing in some parts and mostly covered iN dust and leaves. Most of the insulation had packed down with the weight of the dust and leaves. Not only is this a fire hazard but the insulation is no longer able to do its job. finding the right pet for you W

hile people who have pets tend to be happier, more independent, and feel more secure than those without pets, it’s important to select the type of pet that is best for you. You’ll benefit most from having a pet whose needs are compatible with your lifestyle and physical capabilities.

LIFESTYLE CONSIDERATIONS THAT INFLUENCE YOUR CHOICE IN A PET LITTLE OUTDOOR ACTIVITY If most of your time is spent at home, consider pets that would be happy to stay with you in that environment. You may enjoy playing with or cuddling a cat or a bunny; taking leisurely walks with an older dog; watching fish or reptiles; or talking or singing along with a bird. SMALL CHILDREN AND THE ELDERLY Families with small children or elderly living in their homes should consider the size and energy level of a pet. Puppies and kittens are usually very active, but delicate creatures that must be handled with care. Large or rambunctious dogs could accidentally harm or knock over a small child or adult who is unsteady on his or her feet.

to choose pets that are confined to their quarters, such as fish, birds, hamsters, or reptiles. HIGH ACTIVITY LEVEL If you’re more active and enjoy daily activities outside of your home, especially walking or running, an energetic dog might be right for you. Canine companions thrive on outdoor exercise, keeping you on the move. LANDSCAPING CONCERNS With certain pets, your landscaping will suffer. Many dogs will be tempted to dig holes in your lawn, and dog urine can leave yellow patches—some say unaltered females cause the most damage. TIME COMMITMENT Finally, and perhaps most importantly, keep in mind that you’ll be making a commitment that will last the lifetime of the pet—perhaps 10, 15,

OTHER ANIMALS IN HOUSEHOLD Consider the ongoing happiness and ability to adjust the pets you already have. While your cat or a dog might love to have an animal friend to play with, a pet that has had exclusive access to your attentions may resent sharing you. HOME ENVIRONMENT If a neat, tidy home, free of animal hair, occasional muddy footprints and “accidents” is important, then a freeroaming dog or long-haired cat may not be the best choice. You may want

or 20 years with a dog or cat; as many as 30 years or more with a bird. You can, of course, consider adopting an older dog or cat from a shelter or rescue group and provide a deserving animal with a loving home for its senior years.

OWNING A PET IS NOT FOR EVERYONE Having a pet is not a miracle cure for mental illness. Owning a pet is beneficial and comforting only for those who love and appreciate domestic animals. If you’re simply not a “pet person,” pet ownership is not going to provide you with any therapeutic benefits or improve your life. For other people, owning a pet may simply not be practical. Some of the drawbacks are: Pets cost money. Food bills, veterinary care, licenses, grooming costs, toys, bedding, boarding fees, and other maintenance expenses can mount up. If you’re unemployed or elderly, on a limited fixed income, it may be a struggle to cope with the expense of pet ownership.

Pets require time and attention. As any dog owner will tell you, there’s nothing therapeutic about coming home to a dog that has been locked up in the house on his own all day long. Dogs need daily exercise to stay calm and well-balance. Most other pets require at least daily care and attention. Pets can even curb some social activity, as they can only be left alone for a limited time. Pets can be destructive. Any pet can have an occasional accident at home. Some cats may be prone to shredding upholstery, some dogs to chewing shoes. While training can help eradicate negative, destructive behaviour, they remain common in animals left alone without exercise or stimulation for long periods of time. Pets require responsibility. Most dogs, regardless of size and breed, are capable of inflicting injury on people if not handled responsibly by their owners. Even cats can scratch or bite. Pet owners need to be alert to any danger, especially around children. Pets carry health risks for some people. While there are some diseases that can be transmitted from cats and dogs to their human handlers, allergies are the most common health risk of pet ownership. If you or a family member has been diagnosed with a pet allergy, carefully consider whether you can live with the symptoms before committing to pet ownership. Also consider that

www.homesguide.com.au

some friends or relatives with allergies may no longer be able to visit your home if you have a pet.

CHOOSING BETWEEN A DOG OR A CAT Dogs and cats are the most common household pets. While on occasion, you’ll see someone walking a cat on a leash or a dog that uses a litter box, typically the needs and natural behaviours of dogs and cats are different.

ALTERNATIVES TO PET OWNERSHIP If full-time pet ownership is not right for you—or if you want to give pet ownership a trial run before making a commitment— some animal shelters and rescue groups offer pet “rental” programs. Dogs or cats that are available for adoption can be rented out for walks or play dates, or you can foster an animal temporarily until a permanent home can be found. Most animal shelters or rescue groups welcome volunteers to help care for homeless pets or assist at adoption events. Even short periods spent with a pet can benefit both you and the animal. In some areas, education grants are available to purchase and care for class pets, so teachers and groups of school children can experience the benefits of caring for an animal while sharing the responsibilities.
