iña coladas and daiquiris may be part of what makes beachside vacations great, but new research shows there might be a reason to think twice before ordering that umbrella drink: Imbibing in the sun could increase your chances for skin cancer. A new analysis of 16 studies published in the British Journal of Dermatology concludes that downing more than one drink per day is associated with a 20% increased risk for melanoma, the most serious skin cancer type. Previous research has shown that adults who drink while spending time at the beach have higher sunburn rates than nondrinkers.

Acetaldehyde may cause the skin to be more sensitive to the sun’s UV rays, which in turn increases the potential for cell damage that can ultimately lead to cancer.

But the simple fact that people tend to be less vigilant about sun safety while imbibing could play a role, too. “When you’re boozing at the beach, you’re less likely to be conscientious of applying sunscreen,” says Dr. Michael Shapiro, medical director of Vanguard Dermatology in New York City. If being a total poolside teetotaler isn’t likely for you, here’s how to stay safe in the sun: Slather up indoors. Applying sunscreen 30 minutes before heading outside doesn’t just give your skin ample time to absorb the stuff, but it also ensures you’re covered before you indulge—so there’s no chance of forgetting, Shapiro says. Set a one-drink limit. Consuming one or fewer drinks a day doesn’t appear to increase skin cancer risk. Plus, you’re more likely to still have enough wits about you to remember to reapply your lotion as needed. Find a designated reapplier. If just one drink tends to leave you a little forgetful, enlist help. “It’s almost like having a designated driver. Have someone who isn’t drinking remind you when it’s time to reapply,” Shapiro says. Usually, that’s every two hours, or after you’ve taken a dip. Source: from the editors of prevention.com

o you’ve made the switch to natural beauty products, now what? The huge range available can be overwhelming so here’s a few tips to point you in the right direction

‘NATURAL’ MAY NOT BE NATURAL Sometimes, having ‘natural’ written on the label is simply misleading. Always check the ingredients list to make sure the claim in legitimate.

VEGAN FRIENDLY A lot of natural beauty products are vegan friendly, but not all of them. Check the label for a ‘vegan friendly’ logo.

NATURAL INGREDIENT STANDARD Many natural beauty companies will have a ‘Natural Ingredient Standard’ that sets a benchmark for their products and dictates which ingredients can and cannot be called natural. It’s a good idea to look these up before buying to make sure their standards meet yours. MATCH YOUR SKIN TYPE As with regular beauty products, there are different ranges for different skin types. For example, ingredients like honey and avocado can be great for dry skin while witch hazel and tea tree oil are great for oily skin. Research ingredients to make sure they’re right for what you need. KEEP IT SIMPLE Less is more in natural beauty products so keep an eye out for short ingredient lists. Artificial fragrance is a big one to avoid, even if the product is ‘fragrance free’ there might be additives to mask natural smells of other additives, so check carefully. A real natural product will never include Sulfates Parabens or Petrochemicals, so make sure they’re not written in the ingredient list. MAKE IT MINERAL When choosing natural makeup it’s

roast dinner with garlic gravy Who can resist beautiful roast chicken and vegetables smothered in rich garlic gravy? Best of all, this recipe only uses one pot so there is more time to relax afterwards. INGREDIENTS 4 (300g each) chicken marylands 4 medium desiree potatoes, thickly sliced 1 bunch baby carrots, trimmed, peeled 2 small parsnips, peeled, halved 4 garlic cloves, unpeeled 3 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves 25g butter, melted 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 tablespoons plain flour 1 cup chicken stock

METHOD Preheat oven to 200째C/180째C fanforced. Cut 2 deep slashes through the skin and flesh of each chicken piece to the bone. Arrange potatoes, carrot, parsnip and garlic in a large, heavy-

based flameproof roasting pan. Top with chicken, then thyme. Drizzle with combined melted butter and oil. Season with salt and pepper. Roast, uncovered, for 40 to 45 minutes or until chicken is cooked through and vegetables are tender. Transfer vegetables and chicken to a large plate. Cover. Place baking dish with pan juices over medium-high heat. Squeeze garlic from skins and add to pan. Add flour. Cook, stirring, for 2 to 3 minutes or until mixture bubbles and is well-browned. Gradually stir in stock. Cook, stirring, for 3 to 4 minutes or until gravy boils and thickens. Strain gravy into a gravy boat. Serve chicken with roasted vegetables and gravy. Source: taste.com.au

cheesy macaroni souffle Light and fluffy macaroni cheese souffle with a light golden crumb is perfect for an entree or light meal. INGREDIENTS 250g macaroni pasta 375ml can Carnation Light & Creamy Evaporated Milk 1/2 cup reduced-salt chicken stock 2 eggs, separated 4 green onions, thinly sliced 1 cup low-fat grated cheese 1/4 cup fresh multi-grain breadcrumbs olive oil cooking spray

METHOD Preheat oven to 200째C. Lightly grease a 6-cup capacity ovenproof dish. Cook pasta in a large saucepan of boiling salted water, following packet directions, until just tender. Drain. Set pasta aside. Whisk together milk, stock and egg

yolks. Pour into saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until sauce just comes to the boil. Add pasta, onions, cheese and pepper. Toss well to combine. apple and cinnamon choux fritters These cinnamon apple-filled pastry puffs are not as difficult as you think, so enjoy and indulge your tastebuds! INGREDIENTS 1 Granny Smith apple, peeled, grated 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon Vegetable oil, for shallow-frying Custard, to serve Basic choux pastry 60g butter, chopped 2/3 cup plain flour 3 eggs, lightly beaten Cinnamon sugar 1/2 cup caster sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon METHOD Make cinnamon sugar: Combine sugar and cinnamon in a bowl. Make choux pastry: Combine butter and 2/3 cup cold water in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes or until butter has melted and

mixture just starts to boil. Reduce heat to low. Add flour. Cook, stirring, for 2 to 3 minutes or until mixture comes away from side of pan and forms a ball. Set aside for 5 minutes to cool slightly. Using a wooden spoon, gradually beat in eggs until well combined and dough is glossy. Stir in apple and cinnamon. Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium-high heat. Drop 1 level tablespoon mixture into pan. Repeat, making 6 fritters. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes each side or until golden and cooked through. Using a slotted spoon, transfer fritters to cinnamon sugar. Toss to coat. Transfer to a plate. Repeat with remaining dough. Serve fritters warm with custard. Source: taste.com.au

winter fruit salad with sweet tofu cream INGREDIENTS 300g firm tofu, drained 1 teaspoon grated lime zest 1/4 cup (60ml) lime juice 3 teaspoons honey Winter fruit salad 100g pitted prunes 100g whole dried figs 200g bag mixed dried whole fruit 1 vanilla bean, split, seeds scraped 1 cinnamon quill

how to build a sandpit A sand pit is a great way to provide your children with a play area that you can monitor whilst they enjoy hours of activities. It is also a step-by-step project you can complete together with your children. SAFETY Always keep tools and materials away from children. Read the instructions before beginning your project. Do not burn timber off cuts as they contain toxins. Wear an approved dust mask when cutting, planing or sanding timber. CHOOSE YOUR SITE Choose the site for your sand pit, taking into consideration trees and weather conditions, in particular exposure to the sun. Don’t build near a fruit tree such as a plum tree or you will have another job, cleaning the sand pit of rotten fruit. EXCAVATION Prepare the ground. Once the size and position of the pit is determined, start to excavate the selected area to about 200mm below the grass or finished sand level. You can use the top layer of grass to repair bare spots in the lawn, or stack it upside-down in the compost. Dig out the dark-coloured top soil and add to compost or scatter in the garden. Prepare a flat bed for the sand to sit on. If your subsoil is clay or hard pan you may face drainage problems. To overcome this install a perforated

drainage pipe, drain tile or a deep hole in the middle of the pit and then cover with crushed rock, stones or coarse gravel and replace soil.
