I

n a city fringed by idyllic beaches, the idea of a backyard swimming pool might seem hedonistic. However, for many Sydneysiders, a pool isn’t a luxury, it’s an integral part of the home. A pool can be the focal point for entertainment, a place for children to play, a good excuse for exercise, an architectural element and a visual feature. Pools can cost anywhere from $27,000 for a fibreglass type up to about $100,000 for a concrete one. Smaller versions - particularly plunge and lap pools - are becoming trendy and are often an integral part of the design of Sydney homes. But what about whether or not a pool adds value to your home? “It depends on the suburb,” says the co-owner and manager of Narellan Pools Northern Beaches, Matt Ranieri. “We’ve done pools for people trying to sell [their homes] and yes, it’s worked.” But the general manager of ValueCorp, independent valuer Michael Anello, says in some areas of Sydney, putting in a pool doesn’t add any value. However, he adds: “A pool not only improves the marketability of a property but in some areas like the lower north shore and eastern suburbs, where young families are moving in, the demographic demands it. “It’s part of their lifestyle.” We look at the four most popular pool choices for your home.

Finishes include partially or fully tiled pools, spray-on pebble and glass-bead finishes and painted plaster. FIBREGLASS POOLS Though a short installation time and more affordable costs have been the big drawcards of fibreglass pools, refined design and technology are closing the gap between concrete and fibreglass. Councils only require a complying certificate for the installation of a fibreglass pool-which in most cases your pool provider can organise in a couple of weeks- eliminating the average three-month wait for a building permit. With the shell craned into the site (included in the cost), a fibreglass pool can be installed in about two weeks. Landscaping and fencing follow. Fibreglass pools range in size from 12 metres down to a 1.79 -metre circular spa. “There’s a definite trend towards smaller pools,” Ranieri says. “The most common size is seven metres and, based on a family with two active children, that’s ideal.” Ranieri says people want to leave enough space in their yards for some grass and an entertainment area. He

CONCRETE POOLS The beauty of a concrete pool is that it can be designed to a specific shape and size. They are often installed before a new house is built or as the first step in a renovation. A building permit is required, which takes, on average, about three months to be granted (time varies between councils). Construction takes another two or more months. Concrete pools can be costly however, costing anywhere up to $100,000. That figure

says that as block sizes shrink, so will the size of the pool. The fibreglass shell comes in a range of colours and tiles can be added to the waterline. Fewer chemicals are required in a fibreglass pool due to the smooth, non-porous finish. Prices for a sevenmetre pool start at $27,000, with landscaping extra. PLUNGE POOLS The size of a block of land is no longer an impediment to adding a pool. Plunge pools are popular because although they are smaller (less than six metres long), they still offer depthusually about 1.6 metres. They’re a perfect option for the smaller blocks of semi-detached houses and suit people who want to take a quick dip to cool off. People are using the space at the side of a house or building, right up to the house, incorporating the pool as an architectural water feature rather than building it at the back of the garden. Don’t think a plunge pool is a cheap option, however. Plunge pools generally cost between $35,000 and $45,000. Fibreglass plunge pools cost about $24,000. Article supplied by Narellan Pools.

tankworks unravelled at the australian garden show It’s finally spring and if you were lucky enough to visit the Australian Garden Show and get inspired you may have seen some stand out garden displays.

Sandhya was a finalist in the City Gardens category at the Australian Garden Show this year in the city terrace (sizes approximately 5m x 5m) category. She was judged on her design in her interpretation on rainwater harvesting. Her design takes you on a journey beginning when rainwater is collected in the rain water tankwhich is alluded to by the curved Aquaplate® steel wall made by Tankworks (the same material

These rain chains channel the water into the garden where the selection of plants in the garden are those that are suitable for situations of temporary inundation. INGREDIENTS 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 8 thick beef sausages 1 large red onion, chopped 700g butternut pumpkin, peeled, cut into 2cm pieces 500g sebago potatoes, peeled, cut into 2cm pieces 2 medium zucchini, halved lengthways, thickly sliced 1/3 cup rogan josh curry paste 2 cups beef stock 2 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander leaves Steamed basmati rice, plain yoghurt and fresh coriander leaves, to serve

METHOD Heat 2 teaspoons oil in a large deep frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook sausages, turning, for 8 to 10 minutes or until browned and just cooked through. Transfer to a plate. Add remaining oil to pan. Cook onion, pumpkin, potato and zucchini, stirring, for 5 minutes or until onion has softened. Add curry paste. Cook for 1 minute or until fragrant. Add stock. Bring to a simmer. Meanwhile, thickly slice sausages. Add to pan. Simmer, covered, for 20 minutes or until pumpkin is tender. Remove from heat. Stir in chopped coriander. coconut chicken curry with coriander pesto Simple, casual and creative - this chicken curry has all the right ingredients for a stress-free midweek dinner. INGREDIENTS 1 tablespoon sunflower oil 1 onion, finely chopped 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 tablespoons Thai green curry paste 800g chicken thigh fillets, cut into 2cm cubes 2 tablespoons coriander pesto, plus extra to serve 1 cup (250ml) chicken stock 400ml coconut milk 4-6 small chat potatoes, quartered 1-2 tablespoons fish sauce, to taste Juice of 1 lime, plus wedges to serve Coriander leaves, to serve

METHOD Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and cook for 1-2 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and curry paste and cook for 1 minute until fragrant. Add chicken and cook for 1 minute, stirring to coat in paste, then stir in pesto, stock and coconut milk. Bring to the boil, then reduce heat to mediumlow and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes until chicken is almost cooked. Add potatoes and cook for 10 minutes until tender. how to build a child’s walker trolley Your child will spend hours at the helm of this toy, developing the skills necessary to be able to walk free without assistance. A simple box base encourages your toddler to wheel toys, books and other goodies to wherever they want. It’s a good idea to have a little weight in the box area (a book or two) to counterbalance your child’s own weight. WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO GET STARTED: Materials: • 25mm dowel x 270mm long • 3ply 600mm x 450mm • PVA woodglue • Pine: 70mm x 2metres x 19mm, 42mm x 400mm x 19mm x 2 pieces • Nails • 4 x 30mm 8 gauge screws • Paint 1L semi gloss • 120 grit sandpaper • Washers Tools: • Claw hammer • Drill & bits • Tape measure • Mitre box • Hand saw • Paint brush SAFETY Always keep tools and materials away from children. Read the instructions before beginning your project. Wear an approved dust mask when cutting, planing or sanding timber. 1. WHERE TO BEGIN Cut the following: 2 lengths of 70mm x 500mm x 19mm 2 lengths of 70mm x 270mm x 19mm & 2 lengths of 42mm x 400mm x 19mm for handle arms.

Using a 25mm hole saw, drill hole centred 30mm from one end in each piece to receive handle. Cut 4 wheels with 60mm hole saw. Make a box with the pieces cut previously. Leave space at one end for attaching handles (see Fig.1).

2. MAKING THE HANDLES Cover base with plywood using glue and nails. Take the pieces from before and glue the 25mm dowel into the holes to form the handle, then glue and screw the handle to the ends of the tray box (see Fig. 2).

3. AXLES Attach axles to base of box using glue and screw at 100mm from each end. Using 30mm x 8mm or 10 gauge screws attach wheels by placing washers as shown.

4. FINISHING FINISHING Prepare the surfaces for the first coat of paint by sanding with 120 grit sandpaper in the direction of the grain. The trolley is now ready for painting. The choice of colours is up to you, but bright red wheels and a varnished tray looks fantastic (see Fig. 3). Children will spend hours playing with the walker trolley.
