100 years of ANZAC ANZAC Day – 25 April – is probably Australia’s most important national occasion. It marks the anniversary of the rst ma or military action fought by ustralian and ew ealand forces during the irst World War

rom 2014, the world will be commemorating 100 years since the start of the First World War. For Australians this is a momentous occasion. The First World War touched the lives of nearly every Australian and the impacts are still prevalent today. For these reasons it is essential to commemorate, remember, and learn from those who sacrificed their lives durin those four years, 1914 – 1918. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The soldiers in those forces quickly became known as Anzacs, and the pride they took in that name endures to this day. When war broke out in 1914, Australia had been a federal commonwealth for only 13 years. The new national government was eager to establish its reputation among the nations of the world. In 1915 Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied expedition that set out to capture

the Gallipoli peninsula in order to open the Dardanelles to the allied navies. The ultimate objective was to capture Constantinople (now Istanbul in Turkey), the capital of the Ottoman Empire, an ally of Germany. The Australian and New Zealand forces landed on Gallipoli on 25 pril meetin fierce resistance from the Ottoman Turkish defenders. What had been planned as a bold stroke to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stalemate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months. At the end of 1915 the allied forces were evacuated, after both sides had suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Over 8,000 Australian soldiers had been killed. News of the landing on Gallipoli had made a profound impact on Australians at home, and 25 April soon became the day on which Australians remembered the sacrifice of those who had died in the war.

Although the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives, the Australian and New Zealand actions during the campaign left us all a powerful legacy. The creation of what became known as the “Anzac legend” became an important part of the identity of both nations, shaping the ways they viewed both their past and their future. ANZAC biscuits The acronym ANZAC was coined in 1915 when Australian and New Zealand troops were training in Egypt. The word ANZAC was eventually applied to all Australian and New Zealand soldiers in World War 1. The term is particularly associated with the landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. ANZAC Day was inaugurated on 25 April 1916 to commemorate the first anniversary of the landin of the ANZAC troops at Gallipoli. During World War 1 and World War ustralians were fiercely patriotic This can best be described in the words, my country - right or wrong. he wives mothers and irlfriends were concerned for the nutritional value of the food bein supplied to their men. Here was a problem. Any food they sent to the fi htin men had to be carried in the ships of the erchant avy ost of these were luc y to maintain a speed of ten knots (18.5 kilometres per hour). Most had no refri erated facilities so any food sent had to be able to remain edible after periods in e cess of two months body of women came up with the answer - a biscuit with all the nutritional values possible. At first the biscuits were called oldiers iscuits but after the landin on Gallipoli, they were renamed ANZAC Biscuits.

They can also be purchased from supermar ets and specialty biscuit shops. ANZAC Biscuit Recipe • 1 cup rolled oats • 1 cup plain our • 1 cup sugar • 3/4 (three-quarters) cup coconut • 125g (4 oz) butter • 2 tablespoons golden syrup • half teaspoon bicarbonate of soda • 1 tablespoon boiling water ombine oats sifted our su ar and coconut. Combine butter and golden syrup, stir over gentle heat until melted. i soda with boilin water add to melted butter mi ture stir into dry ingredients. a e teaspoonfuls of mi ture and place on lightly greased oven trays allow room for spreadin Cook in slow oven (150°C or 300°F) for minutes oosen while still warm then cool on trays. Makes about 35.
