winter magic festival SATURDAY 18TH JUNE 2016

The Winter Magic Festival is a free, annual community event, celebrated around the Winter solstice in Katoomba in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. The Winter Solstice in 2016 (Yule) falls on June 21st, 8:34am AEST. Winter Magic is the Blue Mountain’s highest profile and most anticipated annual event. The Blue Mountains is the NSW inaugural City of the Arts and Katoomba is the heart of that city. It is the weekend when artists, musicians, dancers, drummers, choirs, stalls and community take over one of Australia’s most famous towns. During the event, the main street of Katoomba is closed to motor traffic and open to pedestrian traffic. This allows the whole town to become a performance space. The streets are lined with market stalls and everybody who attends is encouraged to dress in costume. Unlike many Festivals run by Chambers of Commerce and Councils, this event is run by community volunteers. It has a strong local focus and very wide general appeal. The setting is a town sitting on a narrow ridge and bound north and south by a World Heritage listed National Park. The festival itself is free, however some activities may charge a fee.

The 2016 Winter Magic Festival Theme is ‘Where The Magic Things Are’ The festival committee would like people to consider what magic means to you, whether that be the literal meaning of magic, the magic of community, the magic of the Blue Mountains, the magic of winter and more. THE WINTER MAGIC GRAND PARADE The Winter Magic Grand Parade is a highlight of the day. The Winter Magic Grand Parade is a highlight of the festival with over 500 participants, ranging in age from children to seniors. The Parade starts from the intersection of Lurline and Waratah Streets at 11:30am. It continues along Waratah into Katoomba St and then along Main St to Parke St. The parade is a people parade only..... no vehicles (except emergency vehicles) nor floats or animals. Local community groups are

encouraged to apply however people can also enter as an individual or family. Colourful costumes (warm ones) props and large puppets are the order of the day. You are welcome to bring noise-making devices such as musical instruments or voices. All are encouraged excluding costumes or props that could be considered offensive to age, race or gender. To participate in the Parade you can apply for a place with the Parade Application Form, or join tens of thousands of Winter Magic Visitors and line the street to make the Parade bigger and better than ever! Cathedral of Light

CATHEDRAL OF LIGHT Artist: Mandylights (Richard Neville (United Kingdom)) Collaborators: Daniel Mercer (Australia) / Shane Radcliffe (Australia) / Andy Romanowski (Poland) Cathedral of Light draws physical inspiration from traditional arched windows, typically found in historic churches, to create a 70 metre long tunnel illuminated by tens of thousands of LED light globes. The installation evokes feelings of attraction, warmth, inclusion and a sense of journey with its distinctive shape, attractive tone and walkthrough nature. Much like the idea of a church, the installation draws people out of the darkness and towards the metaphoric light. Designed to be viewed from both inside and out, the Cathedral of Light appears as a single solid shape of bright light that illuminates its surroundings

when viewed from a distance, radiating soft light outwards from all angles. Inside the ‘cathedral’, the space is smaller and much more intimate, and it becomes apparent that the cathedral’s light is not from a single source, but made up of thousands of tiny globes that together make the light so bright. The artists draw the analogy that, just like a strong community or congregation, the sculpture is made up of many smaller parts that work together to achieve a stronger, unified output. MOUNTAIN OF LIGHT Artist: Angus Muir Design (Angus Muir (New Zealand)) Collaborators: Hamish Steptoe (New Zealand) / Jarrod Barrow (New Zealand) Towering to a height of 4 meters, Mountain of Light is a monolithic

installation, brought to life by a dramatic repertoire of lighting effects that begin with subtle changes in colour and culminate in a simulated eruption of shooting flames and molten lava. The installation is constructed from a series of modular extruded columns that are assembled into the abstract shape of a volcanic mountain. The mountain is designed to be viewed and approached from all sides, offering a full 360-degree experience. Each column is packed with computerised graphics that can be controlled by visitors to create effects of superb accuracy and realism. The entire mountain is controllable, so participants can direct colour patterns to run from one side, across, around, down and up the mountain. fish and chips Swap the batter for a cornflake crumb and the deep-frying for oven baking and you’ve got a healthy spin on a takeaway meal. INGREDIENTS • medium Pontiac or Desiree potatoes • live oil spray • 2 cups (60g) corn flakes • 1 egg, lightly whisked • cup (80g) wholemeal flour • 600g boneless white fish fillets (such as whiting or flathead) • 2 tablespoons low-fat natural yoghurt • 2 teaspoons finely chopped flat-leaf parsley METHOD Step 1 Preheat oven to 1 0 C. Line an oven tray with baking paper. Step 2 Cook the potatoes in a large saucepan of boiling water for 15 minutes or until almost tender. Drain well. Set aside to cool slightly. Step 3 Cut the potatoes into wedges. Place on the lined tray and lightly spray with oil.

Step 4 Place the cornflakes into a large plastic bag and use a rolling pin to crush. Place in a shallow bowl. Place the egg and flour in separate bowls. Step 5 Dip 1 fish fillet in the flour to lightly coat then dip in egg and cornflake crumbs to coat. Place on the lined tray with the potato. Repeat with remaining fish, flour, egg and crumbs. Step 6 Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through. Step 7 Meanwhile, combine the yoghurt and parsley in a small bowl. Place the fish and wedges on serving plates. INGREDIENTS • 1 (about 800g, 3cm thick) firm white fish fillet (such as flathead, ling or barramundi), cut into 3cm cubes • 80ml (1 3 cup) e tra virgin olive oil • 1 tablespoon finely shredded lemon rind • 60ml (1 cup) fresh lemon juice • 1 cup loosely packed coarsely chopped fresh oregano • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 1 2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • Salt freshly ground black pepper • Bought t at iki, to serve, if desired • Sliced sourdough bread, toasted, to serve, if desired Equipment • You will need 8 bamboo skewers for this recipe. METHOD Step 1 Thread the fish pieces onto 8 bamboo skewers. Place in a single layer in a shallow glass or ceramic dish.

Step 2 Combine the oil, lemon rind, lemon juice, oregano, garlic and cinnamon in a jug. Season with salt and pepper, and whisk with a fork until well combined. Pour over the fish kebabs and turn to evenly coat. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for 1 hour to develop the flavours. Step 3 Drain fish kebabs and reserve the marinade. Arrange fish kebabs in a single layer on a large, heatproof microwave-safe plate. Place the plate on a microwavesafe rack or upturned dinner plate to elevate. Loosely cover the fish with 2 sheets of damp paper towel and cook for 5 minutes on Medium 500watts 50 . Brush the fish kebabs with reserved marinade. Turn and cook for a further 5 minutes on Medium 500watts 50 or until the fish is just cooked through. Step 4 Serve immediately with t at iki and toasted sourdough, if desired.
