how to make a hanging bird feeder There is nothing like looking out your backyard or sitting in your garden watching the bird life. Attracting bird life to your garden with a home made bird feeder is an inexpensive job and one that you will enjoy for a lifetime. SAFETY Always keep tools and materials away from children. Read the instructions before beginning your project. MATERIALS • Jack chain • Zinc ceiling hooks • Brass ceiling hook • Split pins 3 TOOLS • Drill and bits • Wire cutters (you may cut the chain on purchase) • Pencil • STEP 1. WHERE TO BEGIN

Measure and mark with a pencil three points evenly distanced around the circumference of the lip. Using a masonry bit, drill three holes at each of your marks. Decide on the height of the dish and measure and cut three equal lengths of chain. As a guide 60cm should be long enough. Open and slide a split pin onto the end of each length of chain, then push a split pin through each hole from the inside of the dish to the outside. Bend the arms of each pin at right angles to lock and prevent the chain from slipping away. STEP 3. HANGING THE BIRD FEEDER

Now it’s time to hang your bird feeder. Choose a spot that is suitably sheltered, protected and inaccessible for cats such a under a pergola. Fix the ceiling hook to the pergola and hang the dish. Fig 3. The bird feeder is now evenly balanced and ready to hook up to a sheltered location. STEP 4. HINTS AND TIPS 1. Try and keep the seed fresh as wet seed can poison birds. 2. You may also like to use scraps such as stale bread and fruit pieces. 3. Seed mixes containing safflower or sunflower seeds attract cockatoos, which will frighten smaller birds and potentially damage your garden. 4. Drill a hole in the bottom of the dish to allow water runoff.

Decide on a suitable dish. We recommend a heavy round dish (terracotta) that is shallow with a large diameter and thin edges. These requirements provide a stable perch that caters for groups of birds to perch and eat with good visibility away from prying cats. STEP 2. INSTALLING THE CHAIN
