nzac Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War and this issue we are featuring our most commemorative day of the year. Last year I had the opportunity to visit Gallipoli while travelling through Turkey. It was a moving experience to visit Brighton Beach and experience the Anzac Walk that has been designed for the Australian visitor. The walk allows us to explore the main area the ‘Anzacs’ and others, held on Gallipoli from 25 April to 20 December 1915. One of the most moving elements of the visit, along with Lone Pine Cemetery, was the Turkish memorial. On it are words sent in 1934 by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, President of Turkey, to an official Australian, New Zealand and British party visiting Anzac Cove (featured on the cover), it reads: “Those heroes that shed their blood, and lost their lives ... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore, rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies And the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side, Here in this country of ours. You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries ... Wipe away your tears. Your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace.” View the ANZAC feature on page 10. Good reading. Jess Greig-Canty Managing Editor

fun projects to keep the kids happy Getting the kids involved in some fun craft or simple D.I.Y. is a great way to keep them entertained for hours. Here are a few quick and easy ideas to drag them away from the TV for some quality time over the holidays.
STAR TORCH You can make bedtime lots of fun for the kids with this D.I.Y. star torch. What you’ll need: Pencil Sheet of thin cardboard Cutting knife Sticky Tape Large LED torch How to make it: Trace an outline of your torch head onto the cardboard and cut it out in a circle. Draw stars and moon shapes on the cardboard circle, then carefully cut out the shapes. Place the cardboard circle over the torch lens and tape it down. Then just turn it on and watch the stars shine on the wall.
Pencil and ruler Cutting knife, scissors (or jigsaw) Craft paint or spray paint Glitter, trinkets and buttons Craft glue How to make it: Start by laying out plenty of newspaper over your work area to keep it clean. Use the ruler to draw each letter of your name onto the cardboard and cut them out. (For a more solid letter, you can cut out the letters out of MDF with a jigsaw. Or simply pick up some craft letters at your local Bunnings.) Next the kids can get creative and decorate the letters with coloured paints or gluing on glitter and buttons. Wait for the paint to dry and hang them up.
PET ROCKS
FLOWER PRINT POSTERS
A classic craft project that the kids will love making. Start by adding your base colour, then paint eyes, mouth, glue on hair and anything else you like. What you’ll need: A bag of pebbles or smooth stones (Not too small.) Bright coloured craft paints Ball of wool or cotton for hair Craft glue
COLOURFUL NAME SIGNS A fun decorative project for kids of all ages to enjoy and hang their name up in their room. What you’ll need: Newspaper A sheet of cardboard (or MDF)
You can help the kids make a pretty poster, using plants and flowers from the garden. What you’ll need: Newspapers Flowers and leaves Sturdy board or worktable (for hammering) Watercolour paper Paper towels Rubber mallet or hammer How to make it: Cover your worktable in newspaper. Place your sheet of watercolour paper on top. Get the kids to collect some flowers and leaves from the garden and arrange them onto the watercolour paper. Cover your design up with a
paper towel, then gently hammer so the flower makes an impression into the watercolour paper. Next, carefully peel off the paper towel and flowers, and a lovely imprint should be left on the watercolour paper.
SUMMER SCRAPBOOK The kids can have fun decorating a summer scrapbook cover with a sandpaper sandcastle design. What you’ll need: Pencil Coarse sandpaper Scissors Glue Wrapping paper Toothpick Tape Card stock Pencil Scrapbook Double-sided tape How to make it: Cut out your wrapping paper and glue it to the scrapbook cover. Draw your own sandcastle elements, trace the shapes onto the smooth side of your sandpaper and cut them out. Make a flag for the top of your castle. Stick a toothpick behind the top of your castle and cut out a flag from card stock and glue it on. With the double-sided tape, stick the pieces of the sandpaper castle to the front of the scrapbook. Then add in all your favourite drawings, photos, and memories from summer!

O
ne of Australia’s most important national rememberance days, ANZAC Day, falls on 25th April and marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. Australia had only been a Federal Commonwealth for 13 years, when war broke out in 1914. The new national government was eager to establish its reputation among the nations of the world. In 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula. The Australian and New Zealand forces landed in Gallipoli on 25th April, meeting fierce resistance from the Ottoman Turkish defenders. What they
had planned to be bold strike to knock Turkey out of the war, quickly became a stalemate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months. At the end of 1915, the allied forces were evacuated, after both sides had suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Over 8,000 Australian soldiers had been killed. News of the landing on Gallipoli had a profound impact on Australians at home, and April 25 soon became the day on which Australians remembered the sacrifice made by those who died in the war. ANZAC Day commemorative ceremonies observe a one or two minute silence, acting as a sign of respect and time for reflection. Flowers have traditionally been laid on graves and memorials in memory of
www.homesguide.com.au
the deceased. Rosemary, symbolising remembrance, is popular on ANZAC day. Laurel is also a commemorative symbol; woven into a wreath, it was used by the ancient Romans to crown victors and the brave as a mark of honour. In recent years, the poppy, strongly associated with Remembrance Day (11 November), has also become popular in wreaths on ANZAC Day. ANZAC Day commemoration includes a recitation of the Ode, the fourth stanza of the poem ‘For the fallen’ by Laurence Binyon. The Last Post is the bugle call that signifies the end of the day’s activities in military tradition, and it is also sounded on ANZAC Day to to indicate the soldier has gone to his final rest.

gallipoli 2015 The largest Anzac Day commemoration outside of Australia, is held at Gallipoli. Each year Australia and New Zealand conduct three commemorative services at Gallipoli: a joint Dawn Service at the Anzac Commemorative Site, followed by an Australian Memorial Service at Lone Pine, and a New Zealand Memorial Service at Chunuk Bair. On 6 August 2015, to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Lone Pine, the Turkish Government has agreed to the Australian Government’s request for a special commemorative service. Lone Pine is an important site for a 100th anniversary service, commemorating the contribution of more than 50,000 Australians who served at Gallipoli during the eight-month campaign and the 8,700 who died. The battle at Lone Pine saw some of the most fierce fighting of the Gallipoli

campaign. Over four days, Australia suffered more than 2,000 casualties. Seven Australians were awarded the Victoria Cross for their bravery at Lone Pine. This will be a significant commemorative event and provides Australians with an additional opportunity to visit the Gallipoli Peninsula and Turkey during 2015. Information on the Lone Pine commemorative service will be available on the website soon, visit: www.gallipoli2015.dva.gov.au.
the dawn service
T
he Dawn Service observed on Anzac Day has its origins in a military routine which is still followed by the Australian Army today. During battle, the half-light of dawn was one of the most favoured times for an attack. Soldiers in defensive positions were woken in the dark before dawn, so by the time first light crept across the battlefield they were awake, alert, and manning their weapons; this is still known as the “stand-to”. As dusk is equally favourable for attacks, the stand-to was repeated at sunset. After the First World War, returned soldiers sought the comradeship they had felt in those quiet, peaceful moments before dawn. A dawn vigil, recalling the wartime front line practice of the dawn ‘stand-to’, became the basis of a form of commemoration in several places after the war. There are claims that a dawn requiem mass was held at Albany on
25 April 1918, and a wreath laying and commemoration took place at dawn in Toowoomba the following year. In 1927 a group of returned men, returning from an Anzac function held the night before, came upon an elderly woman laying flowers at the as yet unfinished Sydney Cenotaph. Joining her in this private remembrance, the men later resolved to institute a dawn service the following year. Thus in 1928 150 people gathered at the Cenotaph to for a wreath laying and two minutes silence. This is generally regarded as the beginning of organised dawn services. Over the years the ceremonies have developed into their modern form and also seen an increased association with the dawn landings on 25 April 1915. Today dawn services include the presence of a chaplain, but not the presence of dignitaries such as the governor general. They were originally
www.homesguide.com.au
very simple and followed the military routine. In many cases, attendance at the dawn service was restricted to veterans, while the daytime ceremony was for families and other well-wishers. Before dawn, the gathered veterans would be ordered to “stand to” and two minutes’ silence would follow. At the end of this time a lone bugler would play the Last Post and then conclude the service with Reveille, the bugler’s call to wake up. In more recent times families and young people have been encouraged to take part in dawn services, and services in Australian capital cities have seen some of the largest turnouts ever. Reflecting this change, those services have become more elaborate, incorporating hymns, readings, pipers, and rifle volleys. Other services, though, have retained the simple format of the dawn stand-to, familiar to so many soldiers.

australia’s favourite hero: simpson and his donkey
J
ack Simpson Kirkpatrick was born in 1892 at South Shields in the north east of England. He came from a large family, being one of eight children. As a child during his summer holidays he used to work as a donkey-lad on the sands of South Shields. He had a great affinity with animals, in particular donkeys. Later he deserted ship in Australia when he heard of the war with Germany. Fearing that a deserter might not be accepted into the Australian Army, he dropped Kirkpatrick from his name and enlisted simply as John Simpson. He was to become Australia’s most famous, and best-loved military hero. In Perth on 23rd August 1914, Jack was accepted and chosen as a field ambulance stretcher bearer. This job was only given to strong men so it seems that his work as a stoker in the Merchant Marine had prepared him well for his exceptional place in history. He joined the 3rd Field Ambulance at Blackboy Hill camp, 35 km east of Perth on the same day. On the 25th April 1915 he, along with the rest of the Australian and New Zealand contingent landed at the wrong beach on a piece of wild, impossible and savage terrain now known as Anzac Cove. Attack and counter attack began. During the morning hours of April 26th, along with his fellows, Jack was carrying casualties back to the beach over his shoulder – it was then that he saw the donkey. Jack knew what he had to do. From then on he became a part of the scene at Gallipoli walking along next to his donkey, forever singing and whistling as he held on to his wounded passengers, seemingly completely fatalistic and

scornful of the extreme danger. He led a charmed life from 25th April 1915 until he was hit by a machine gun bullet in his back on 19th May 1915. In these amazing 24 days he was to rescue over 300 men down the notorious Monash Valley. His prodigious, heroic feat was accomplished under constant and ferocious attack from artillery, field guns and sniper fire. Quoted from some of his officers: “Almost every digger knew about him. The question was often asked: “Has the bloke with the donk stopped one yet?” “He was the most respected and admired of all the heroes at Anzac.” Captain C. Longmore, in 1933, remembered how the soldiers “watched him spellbound from the trenches... it was one of the most inspiring sights of those early Gallipoli days.” Colonel John Monash wrote “Private Simpson and his little beast earned the admiration of everyone at the upper end of the valley. They worked all day and night throughout the whole period since the landing, and the help rendered to the wounded was invaluable. Simpson knew no fear and moved unconcernedly amid shrapnel and rifle fire, steadily carrying out his self imposed task day by day, and he frequently earned the applause of the personnel for his many fearless rescues of wounded men from areas subject to rifle and shrapnel fire.” Jack was recommended for the Victoria Cross, officially, through his unit, on June 3rd 1915. He was also recommended for the highest military honours by Colonel (later General Sir John) Monash, Australia’s greatest commander of the First World War.
www.homesguide.com.au
Monash, commander of the 4th Brigade at the time (where Jack was operating) was an eye-witness to his activities and sent in a lengthy submission to Divisional Headquarters on May 20th. Unfortunately, the senior medical officer at Anzac, Colonel Howse VC, had given faulty instructions to the junior officer preparing Simpson’s citation. He was recommended under the wrong category of heroism and consequently his VC request was denied. In July 1967 Australian leaders tried to correct this tragic error by sending a petition to the British War Office, signed by Prime Minister Holt, the Governor General, the Chief of the General Staff, and other leaders on behalf of the Australian people, requesting that a posthumous Victoria Cross be awarded to Private John Simpson Kirkpartrick. The request was denied, on the grounds that it would be setting a dangerous precedent. This was incorrect. The precedent had already been set. In 1907 two British officers, Lieutenants Melvill and Coghill were posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for their actions in South Africa, twenty-eight years previously. It is now 33 years since this petition was tendered by Australia’s leading citizens. The denial of the request by a handful of people in Whitehall, England was an unacceptable slight on Australia’s Political and Military leaders and of the people they represented. It begs the question: “ Why is an award from another country more important than any honour we may bestow on our own heroes?”.

council watch News and updates by the hills shire council STUDENTS RECEIVE CYBERBULLYING AND SCHOOL HOLIDAY SAFETY SESSION AT COUNCIL One hundred Year 4 students from Crestwood Public School visited The Hills Shire Council Chambers on Wednesday to hear from The Hills Local Area Command and Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne on the importance of staying safe in the school holidays. An initiative of Mayor Byrne and Hills media personality Gareth McCray, the students were warned about the perils of cyberbullying, discussed how to stay safe in the holidays and were taken through the basics of policing by Superintendent Rob Critchlow and Youth Liasison Officers Senior Constable Rob Patterson and Constable Christie Desira. Mayor Byrne said it was a valuable and enjoyable experience for the students. “Senior Constable Patterson explored an issue that probably wasn’t so big 10 – 15 years ago and that’s mobile phone and online safety,” Mayor Byrne said. “The officers reminded children of the importance of looking out for each other and staying safe throughout the school holidays.” “It was great to see the students so engaged throughout the morning session and I want to thank The Hills Local Area Command and Gareth McCray for making the event possible.” Officers also helped to de-mystify the many items located on an officer’s

uniform by explaining their uses to deter criminals, from the power of the voice through to capsicum spray and hand-cuffs. They explained that guns were only to be drawn as a last resort and they remained firmly in their holsters during the presentation. Students were also given a tour of the command bus and each received a showbag full of items such as wristbands, balloons and stickers reinforcing the cyber safety message. HILLS-KELLYVILLE ROTARY CLUB TO RUN JAZZ AT THE PINES Hills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne has announced that an agreement has been reached to transfer the operation of Jazz At The Pines to the Hills-Kellyville Rotary Club “This is fantastic news because this event can continue to be run by an organisation with the community’s interests at heart,” Mayor Byrne said. “Jazz At The Pines is important to so many people and I’m glad that an agreement has been reached.” Mayor Byrne said that the discussions had taken place over some time and were not in reaction to media reports. “These type of discussions take time and obviously Council wasn’t going to make announcements until an agreement had been reached.” “We don’t make announcements whenever we’re in discussions over important matters, otherwise nothing would ever get completed.” “We’re very confident that the HillsKellyville Rotary Club will continue to run this event to a high standard and we’re really happy that this event will continue to run at Roughley House.” Mayor Byrne said that Council would provide Roughley House to Jazz At The Pines free of charge and continue to maintain the heritage property. “We want our dedicated group of volunteers to keep on promoting the historic Roughley House to the community.” www.homesguide.com.au
INVESTMENT ATTRACTION PROGRAM TURNS BUSINESS PEOPLE INTO RESIDENTS Council’s Investment Attraction program has been praised by a husbandand-wife business team who not only re-located their integrated medical practice, but also their home, to the Sydney Hills. Sivanna Health is now operating on Showground Rd and Director Girish Raniga credited Council’s Economic Development Team with introducing him and his wife Dr Jaimini Raniga to the Sydney Hills. “We were doing some research on The Hills area and came to see Council’s Economic Development and Marketing Officer Stephen Garrard,” Mr Raniga said. “Stephen took us on a tour of The Hills, explained the demographics of the area, developments that were set to take place, infrastructure that was due to be built and information on how the area would grow.” “This information really attracted us to the area and we’ve now set up our business and our home here. We really like the lifestyle here in The Hills.” Hills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne said the Investment Attraction program has also pulled in new residents. “The Raniga family wouldn’t have chosen the Sydney Hills had they not met with Council’s Economic Development and Marketing Team,” Mayor Byrne said. “The Sydney Hills is going to be home to an additional 100,000 residents over the next 25 years, and those residents need jobs. Attracting businesses like Sivanna Health will give more options to locals.” “Our Economic Development Team is here for our business community, but it’s also here to attract businesses to the Sydney Hills as we keep up the pace as one of the fastest growing Local Government Areas in Australia.”

get a healthier heart in days

After the loss of Sopranos star James Gandolfini’s shocking heart attack at the age of 51, make sure you’re fully aware of all the ways you can reduce your risk of heart disease. MONDAY Reduce your intake of saturated fats by limiting processed and takeaway foods. Swap full-fat dairy products for low-fat. Trim fat from meat and skin from chicken. Limit creamy sauces and mayonnaise and use mustards and chutneys instead. Flaxseed oil and avocado are healthy spreads. TUESDAY Avoid trans fats. They are one of the prime culprits in heart disease and have an even greater impact on health than saturated fats. Avoid partial or hydrogenated vegetable oils and start using healthy oils that will not turn into trans fats, such as olive or coconut oil. Make your own healthy cakes and muffins.

WEDNESDAY Limit your salt intake. The Australian diet contains an unnecessarily large amount of salt (sodium chloride). Even food you wouldn’t suspect can contain large amounts of sodium, such as desserts and biscuits. Choose fresh, natural foods, or foods with less than 120mg of sodium per 100g. THURSDAY Eat more green leafy vegetables. They are a source of B vitamins, which help lower levels of the amino acid homocysteine. Elevated homocysteine levels are associated with heart disease. Many green leafy vegetables are also good sources of iron and vitamin K, which helps regulate blood clotting. FRIDAY Eat more ginger. It has potent medicinal properties that can help reduce the www.homesguide.com.au
risk of cardiovascular disease. Ginger has been shown to lower “bad” LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels, while raising beneficial HDL levels. Try adding fresh ginger to vegie juices, stir-fries or salads, or enjoy a ginger tea. SATURDAY Have about one to two tablespoons of flaxseeds a day. They are rich in alphalinolenic acid (ALA), a type of plantderived omega-3 fatty acid, and lignans, which are beneficial for heart health. Grinding flaxseeds makes them easier to digest. Add a tablespoon to your breakfast cereal. SUNDAY Aim for at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise each day. This is one of the best things you can do for your heart. When you exercise, your heart actually grows larger over time and the amount of blood it is able to pump around the body increases, resulting in more oxygen and nutrients. Article by Lisa Guy, a nutrition expert at australia’s body + soul.
heart hints AVOID DIRTY AIR Inhaling ultrafine pollution particles can thicken the wall of your carotid artery, predisposing you to heart attacks, say University of Washington researchers. Particle levels peak in the early morning in winter, a study in Atmospheric Environment reports, so save outdoor runs or rides for the afternoon. COME TO GRIPS WITH BP As little as four weeks of handgrip training can lower your blood pressure by about 10 percent, a meta-analysis in the Journal of Hypertension reports. The researchers say the exercise creates “shear stress,” which improves blood vessel function. Try four two-minute contractions with each hand. Rest for about a minute in between. START SCRAMBLING. . . . . .and stop thinking that eating eggs raises your LDL (bad) cholesterol. In fact, Brazilian research suggests a link between egg consumption and clearer coronary arteries. One guess is that the yolk’s payload of vitamins E, B12, and folate may be the
key. Just stop at four eggs a day to limit the calories. SWEAT OUT BURNOUT Don’t let your job be the death of you: Work-related exhaustion increases your heart disease risk, a study in Psychosomatic Medicine shows. So hit reset: In a Swiss study, people suffering from burnout slashed their symptoms by up to 57 percent by doing cardio exercise just two or three days a week.
Bananas pack about 420 milligrams, and you can also find the mineral in sweet potatoes (540 milligrams per baked medium spud) and cooked yellowfin tuna (450 milligrams in medium serving). SING IN TWOS Researchers in Sweden found that people who sing together have better heart-rate variability, or the interval of time between beats. And the more variable your heart rate, the better your odds of surviving a heart attack.
DON’T SLEEP IN There is such a thing as too much sleep: People who log 10 or more hours a night have an elevated risk of heart disease, according to a study in the journal Sleep. COOL FOR SCHOOL www.seymourcentre.com 3 April - 18 September Learn from Australia’s jazz legends and principal artists while experiencing exhilarating jazz in an intimate live club. Our animated concerts introduce students to pivotal jazz styles across traditional and modern periods. From stage craft to composition, ensemble work and aural skills, students will gain valuable insights into jazz history, the creative process of improvisation and music as a vocation. Hosted by New York musician and educator Philip Johnston, students are led in an interactive artist Q&A after each performance. Listening resources are available prior to the performances. Early Jazz features jazz of 20s and 30s by Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, and New Orleans jazz standards reflecting funeral and parade music, ragtime, and popular songs of the time. Miles Davis’ revolutionary 1950’s album Birth of Cool is featured in Classic Jazz, demonstrating how Davis rejected the forceful tempo of bebop to pioneer a smoother style that became a landmark in jazz evolution. James Greening’s Large Ensemble salutes the iconic big bands of Mingus and Holland in his modern ensemble that, similar to a chamber ensemble, has one player per part emphasising balanced instrumentation. Afro-Jazz six-piece Mister Ott demonstrates the place where World Music meets Jazz with 5 tone scaling, Ethiopian vocals, funk bass lines, organ 34

A complete, hands-on experience that combines the unfiltered relationship students need with the plays’ action and narrative while also ensuring they are ‘watching with understanding’, in other words, extracting the key ingredients and critical thinking required to write on the plays under exam conditions. science and rap create the perfect potion for powerful performance The Rap Guide to Evolution Touring Australia
T
he New York Times said “astonishing and brilliant”, The Scotsman said Brinkman is “dazzlingly intelligent” and Charles Darwin was unavailable for comment. A smash hit at the Edinburgh Festival, and off-Broadway, Canadian Baba Brinkman’s The Rap Guide to Evolution is coming to Australia from May 19 to June 27! Following on from a sensational run around the world, Merrigong Theatre Company is bringing the provocative, hilarious, and scientifically tested and approved production The Rap Guide to Evolution for a run at 9 venues around the country! Written and performed by Canadian artist Baba Brinkman with music and turntablism by Jamie Simmonds, The Rap Guide to Evolution is an original, thoughprovoking, smart and funny show - not to mention groundbreaking! Direct from Ney York, this is the first (and perhaps only) peer reviewed hip hop show that will excite the young, the old, the hip hoppers, the hop hippers, the scientists and even the scientifically challenged. In a novel species of theatre show, Brinkman combines the wit, poetry and charisma of a great rapper with the accuracy and rigor of a scientific expert. Using hip-hop as a vehicle to communicate the facts of evolution, he simultaneously illuminates the origins and complexities of hip-hop culture through the lens of Darwinism. Through his clever reworking of popular rap singles, as well as his own originals, he illustrates Natural Selection, Sexual Selection, Evolutionary Psychology and much more. Complete with a live DJ and an extraordinary audio-visual show, the show is at once provocative, hilarious and intelligent - but perhaps even more importantly, scientifically accurate.
Brinkman undertook the project at the suggestion of Dr. Mark Pallen, author of The Rough Guide to Evolution. After seeing Brinkman’s internationally acclaimed Rap Canterbury Tales, Dr. Pallen challenged the polymath rapper to “do for Darwin what he had done for Chaucer.” In order to ensure scientific and historical accuracy, Brinkman consulted Pallen throughout the creative process, making The Rap Guide to Evolution the first ever peer-reviewed hip-hop show. Pallen has described Brinkman as having “swallowed the idea and turned it into a work of genius.” So get your baggy jeans and your microsopes ready, because the Australian tour, produced by Merrigong Theatre Company, will take in nine venues, including regional centres like Albany, Mandurah and Wollongong, and Capital city venues including the Sydney Opera House, from mid-May. www.homesguide.com.au
THE DATES: • Albany Entertainment Centre, Albany, WA – 19 May 2014 • Mandurah Performing Arts Centre (MANPAC), Mandurah, WA – 22 May 2014 • Octagon Theatre, University Theatres UWA, Perth, WA – 24 May • Arts Centre Melbourne, VIC – 3 – 7 June 2014 • Canberra Theatre Centre, Canberra, ACT – 11 June 2014 • Illawarra Performing Arts Centre (IPAC), Wollongong, NSW – 13 – 14 June 2014 • Sydney Opera House, Sydney, NSW – 18 – 20 June • Riverside Theatres, Parramatta, NSW – 24 - 25 June • Casula Powerhouse, Casula, NSW – 26 – 27 June
