To the editor I hate to be a critic however you may want to have a chat to your proof reader… the word “afordable” in your opening letter should actually be “affordable”. It’s hard enough trying to teach kids to spell better, especially with all our electronic devices having spell check, but nothing compares to looking over your work prior to it being sent to print. introducing the forever sanctuary range Hotondo Homes are proud to introduce their new Forever Sanctuary Range

F

eaturing an array of revamped and fresh new designs, the Forever Sanctuary Range has been designed with families in mind. The range features a large variety of home designs to cater for a multitude of family needs, budgets and lifestyle requirements. The new range consists of homes designed to suit everything from large acreage blocks through to small and narrow lots. The Forever Sanctuary Range was designed based on extensive research

which explored different types of families and what they believed were important features in their homes. The study revealed that the three key zones of the home were the kitchen, master bedroom and alfresco areas. These areas were found to be essential to the workings of modern Australian families, as a place to interact, entertain guests and retreat after a long day at work. Managing Director of Hotondo Homes, Michael Renwick says that given the extensive research that went into the creation of the Forever Sanctuary Range,

families are in capable hands when they choose to build with Hotondo Homes. “Our design team continually endeavour to develop homes that incorporate the modern lifestyle,” says Michael. “Our builders don’t just build houses – they’re passionate about building homes that their clients want to live in.” “They want to build homes that their clients can have a special connection with and a place they can look forward coming home to.” To find your local builder contact 1800 677 156 or visit their website www.hotondo.com.au

how to build a cork memo board

Fig. 1

The cork memo board can be used in any room in the house. Great for photos, things to do lists, school information and kids paintings. WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO GET STARTED:

Check drawing for measurements.

TIMBER: 2 x 2.4m lengths of hardwood picture frame moulding 4 cork tiles 305mm x 305mm x 6mm thick Plywood 900mm x 610mm x 4mm thick SCREWS & NAILS: Nails 25mm brads Contact adhesive x 1 tube Picture hanging bracket

Carefully hold joints together and predrill a small hole in each then glue and nail to assemble frame (Fig 3).

WHERE TO BEGIN Cut the plywood to a 610mm x 610mm square. Using contact adhesive glue the cork tile to plywood so that edges are flush (Fig 1). Cut picture frame moulding to 610mm, adding the thickness of the moulding allowing 45° angle at each end. Use mitre box to achieve accurate cutting for neat joints (Fig 2).

how to build a child’s walker trolley Your child will spend hours at the helm of this toy, developing the skills necessary to be able to walk free without assistance. A simple box base encourages your toddler to wheel toys, books and other goodies to wherever they want. It’s a good idea to have a little weight in the box area (a book or two) to counterbalance your child’s own weight. WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO GET STARTED: Materials: • 25mm dowel x 270mm long • 3ply 600mm x 450mm • PVA woodglue • Pine: 70mm x 2metres x 19mm, 42mm x 400mm x 19mm x 2 pieces • Nails • 4 x 30mm 8 gauge screws • Paint 1L semi gloss • 120 grit sandpaper • Washers Tools: • Claw hammer • Drill & bits • Tape measure • Mitre box • Hand saw • Paint brush SAFETY Always keep tools and materials away from children. Read the instructions before beginning your project. Wear an approved dust mask when cutting, planing or sanding timber. 1. WHERE TO BEGIN Cut the following: 2 lengths of 70mm x 500mm x 19mm 2 lengths of 70mm x 270mm x 19mm & 2 lengths of 42mm x 400mm x 19mm for handle arms.

Using a 25mm hole saw, drill hole centred 30mm from one end in each piece to receive handle. Cut 4 wheels with 60mm hole saw. Make a box with the pieces cut previously. Leave space at one end for attaching handles (see Fig.1).

Fig. 1

Fig. 2

2. MAKING THE HANDLES Cover base with plywood using glue and nails. Take the pieces from before and glue the 25mm dowel into the holes to form the handle, then glue and screw the handle to the ends of the tray box (see Fig. 2).

3. AXLES Attach axles to base of box using glue and screw at 100mm from each end. Using 30mm x 8mm or 10 gauge screws attach wheels by placing washers as shown.

Fig. 3

4. FINISHING FINISHING Prepare the surfaces for the first coat of paint by sanding with 120 grit sandpaper in the direction of the grain. The trolley is now ready for painting. The choice of colours is up to you, but bright red wheels and a varnished tray looks fantastic (see Fig. 3). Children will spend hours playing with the walker trolley.

flush out the undesirables ... An innovative Australian company – Ventis Home Ventilation – has perfected a fully automatic home ventilation system, that harnesses Mother Nature to help you reduce energy cost and improve home health.

I

n just three years Ventis has grown to 11 offices across NSW, ACT and QLD and employs more than 150 Australians, through the design, manufacture, sales, installation and customer service processes. How does Ventis work to improve your home and well being? The Ventis system is housed in the roof space of a home. The Ventis technology simply draws in outside air through the roof space of a home, pushes it through a medical grade, deep pleat filter, taking out dust, VOC’s, pollen and other allergens and then circulates the fresh, clean air through the home. This 24/7 action creates a positive air flow in the home and creates a healthier, dryer living environment. An innovative way to harness the sun’s free energy The sun is our most abundant source of free natural energy – radiating free warmth. Ventis has found a way to harness this. Warm air is created in the roof space through the sun’s radiance. Circulating warmer air through the home in the heating months has several benefits – a warmer, dryer interior with less mould issues, less reliance on more expensive heating systems, and even temperatures through the home - a blessing for anyone that suffers from asthma. The Ventis system also cools the home on summer nights. This means that people can breathe and sleep in cooler, ventilated, more comfortable rooms without having to

leave their windows open. There are also choices from Ventis to achieve cooler homes earlier in the day, through Ventis Auto-Whirly and Ventis Auto-Cooler accessory kits. Customers report less use of costlyto-run air conditioning and a resulting improvement in air quality – plus they’re sleeping better. Customers have reported that their Ventis system has also helped to minimise allergic reactions, asthma suffering and hay fever symptoms. Some feedback has even said that it helps with snoring! Average cost to run a www.homesguide.com.au

Ventis system is less than $10 a month. Similar product philosophies have been extensively tested in New Zealand, Europe and the States and have had staggering results not just with power bill reductions but also with improved family health, including the health of children suffering from respiratory illnesses, such as asthma, as well as other allergic conditions, such as eczema. modest winston hills home fetches record price of $742,500

modest three bedroom home in Winston Hills sold well over the anticipated price this week, breaking the record price for a home that size in the suburb. “Sales in the area have been strong so I was expecting a good result, but this was a delightful result” said selling agent Trevor Leslie of Trevor Leslie Real Estate in Baulkham Hills. “I’m so happy for the sellers. They’ve been through such a tough time and it was just beautiful to watch their luck change.” In their sixties, owners Robert and Heather had closed down their business in 2013 after struggling to make a profit for seven years. “We were working seven days a week and going backwards” Robert said. “We decided it was time to close down, sell the house to clear debt and retire to Ulladulla. When we asked Trevor to sell the home I estimated that we’d get $620,000 - 650,000.” The couple knew that after paying out debts and purchasing a home in Ulladulla, they’d have nothing at all left for their retirement, but they felt they had no choice. Knowing the market was strong, Trevor thought they’d get more and recommended the property be sold by auction – but with over 3000 enquiries and more than one offer, the home sold well before auction, after just 16 days, to a couple who had attended the first home open. The selling price - $742,500 – is the highest price paid to date for a three bedroom home in Winston Hills. Robert and his wife Heather could scarcely believe their luck. “You could’ve knocked me off my chair when Trevor told me how much we’d been offered. It’s made all the difference in the world to us,” Robert said, “if we’d sold for price 14

interior colour trends 2014 Do you want to re-fresh your tired looking space?

W

ith so many styles and trends displayed within magazines and homeware stores, it is daunting to understand what information is relevant to you and how to interpret it into your own home. The best advice is to reflect on your lifestyle, look at current trends and choose colours which best create an environment to suit you from a colour psychology perspective. Colour has been used throughout history in many forms of expression, whether it be to express social status by wearing purple to represent royalty or the free use of vibrant colour in Mexico to reflect their celebration of life culturally. Colour is still used today as a form of expression of who we are and can be easily translated into our homes using the latest colour forecasts as inspiration. There is a resurgence of colour reflective of the arrival of spring seen through the use of cool blue highlights and warm yellow tones which pair well against a white backdrop of walls and furniture. The stark contrast of colour and noncolour makes for a bright and happy interior, sure to provide a calming environment from a stressful day at work. BLUE HAVEN Blue has been used throughout interiors historically, as it has been proven to lower blood pressure and create a calming environment. Modern interpretations of floral prints or oriental floral patterns through rugs and prints are making a comeback with homage to 70’s inspiration. Reflective surfaces and warm white tones open a space to create tricky of the eye to make it appear larger than it is. 70’S GRAPHIC A resurgence of 70’s inspiration is influencing interior design, through the use of bright blocked colour and warm tones of grade green, ochre, pink and peach. outdoor living tips and tricks

W

hilst Australia Day signifies the end of the holiday season, there’s still another two months of hot weather to enjoy. Part of our national psyche has us love spending time outdoors at home, whether it’s a small balcony or large backyard. This blog is about how to plan your outdoor space and some design ideas whether you are decorating an existing space or designing it from scratch. Good design is subjective but Desitnation Living believe the common principles that define it are: 1. Beautiful aesthetics (whatever your taste may be) 2. That the space reflects how you want to live in that space 3. Functionality – a practical use of the space Planning is key to achieving this and answering your own mini brief will help provide a starting point. Questions to answer are: This will help define how much space you need, who will be using the space,

what type of furniture and outdoor equipment. It will get you thinking and prioritizing your needs. It may also determine the look and functionality of the area. Do you garden? Do you want a lounge, an outdoor kitchen etc… This is a follow on from the above question. This prompts you to consider, the various activities that will happen and where to place them, you may for example have a largely child-centric backyard to suit your current lifestyle but may want to incorporate a little closed off garden nook with a seat just for you or a non-visible vegetable patch. How do you want your outdoor area to connect and interface with the indoors spaces? How does it connect to the kitchen? If you have a pool will they be walking indoors to go to the bathroom? This will help define what goes into your outdoor space, for example if your kitchen has an open-able wall that feeds the outdoor area you may not need an outdoor kitchen.

www.homesguide.com.au

The reality pill that will provide you with a parameter & scope for what you can afford to do with the space. Consider creating in excel an itemized list of what you would like in the space from very important to less so and attach approx. or real costs, if undertaking a design for a large outdoor area the correct consultants will be able to provide approximate initial costs before engaging their services.

seize the season... Here are some very handy tips from Mathew Woodbury on how to go about choosing your outdoor furniture.

O

ne of the first things to think about when furnishing your outdoors is the style and the look you prefer. For example, do you prefer the wicker look or the timber look? When deciding take into consideration the setting and area your furniture will sit in. Is it an ultra-modern surrounds, resort style, traditional or a typical Aussie backyard? Try and visualise in advance all the options and make sure the outdoor furniture you decide on is a good fit. Next, measure up and figure out how much of the area you want to furnish and how much you want to keep open to traffic. Also consider how many people you would normally seat and how many you may seat when you have a larger function. Think about that BBQ party with friends, a party or a Christmas day lunch. If you are restrained with limited space you may consider extendable tables to meet the above needs. Thirdly think about the comfort of your furniture. With outdoor chairs and sofas it’s important that the seat is the right size so you can shuffle to the back whilst keeping your feet planted on the floor. Also the “rake” of the chair should have

18

homesguideliving

www.homesguide.com.au

a suitable angle so that you are not sitting too upright and the natural curve of the body is considered and looked after. Lastly it’s important to think long term. How long will the furniture last? You wouldn’t want to be in a position where you have to replace furniture in a couple of seasons. It is really tempting to opt for really cheap furniture to save money, but in the long run this approach often ends up costing more.

“Enjoy the beautiful Australian outdoor weather in summer and all year round” Mathew Woodbury, Managing Director of Woodbury House Furniture, Castle Hill. Think also about maintenance, especially if the furniture is going to be out in the open and not under cover. If choosing a wicker product, choose one that has a warranty against fading and splitting. If choosing timber outdoor furniture, choose a timber that looks good when it weathers. A grade teak

huge herd of 125 wildly colourful rhino sculptures have charged into town to create a spectacular world class sculpture trail through the streets, parks and public spaces of Sydney, Dubbo and surrounds during February to April 2014 to help raise awareness of the critical plight facing rhinos through poaching and habitat loss. Taronga Wild! Rhinos is a Wild in Art event that will bring businesses, artists and schools together to create a spectacular world-class sculpture trail. The huge herd of wildly colourful rhino sculptures are painted by artists and their small calves are decorated by local schools. This mass public art exhibition is to help raise awareness and valuable funds for Taronga’s world leading Black Rhino breeding program and in-situ conservation projects.

RHINO CONSERVATION Three out of the world’s five rhino species are in critical danger – and the Javan Rhino and Sumatran Rhino are dangerously close to being lost forever. All five species are under threat from habitat destruction and illegal poaching. Taronga Western Plains Zoo holds one of the most significant groups of rhinos in the world. We have 15 rhinos – including Black, Greater One-Horned and White Rhinos – and our expertise in managing these species means we’re now playing a leading role in their conservation worldwide.

MEET BAKHITA AND KUFARA Back in 1992 Taronga launched its Black Rhino breeding program. Six female rhinos are air-lifted from Zimbabwe to form a zoo-based insurance population. In 1996 breeding males arrive from the USA.

In 2002 Bakhita our first female calf was born. Bakhita has grown into a strong and confident lady. On 17th February 2010 Bakhita gives birth to female calf, Kufara, representing the second generation born to Taronga’s Black Rhino breeding program. Kufara weighed in at approximately 30kg. Kufara has grown steadily both in size and personality. Kufara has definitely taken on the personality of both parents, with her mother’s confidence and her father’s gentle nature. Now is your opportunity to support Bakhita and Kufara through your sponsorship of a sculpture. At the end of the trail, on the 14th May at The Star, Pyrmont the life-sized rhino sculptures will go under the hammer at a charity auction to raise critical funding for Taronga’s rhino conservation programs

the soda factory turns ONE! 1st birthday party weekend – 21st & 22nd february

H

ey sweetheart, where did that year go… still ‘member that night. It was a swingin’ new joint… ‘member we shared a damn good hot dog, we danced… We shared a raspberry float… Whaddaya say sweetheart, fancy a dance? In February last year, Sydney met its new favourite hidden bar. And behind a retro coke machine in Surry Hills, there she was, The Soda Factory. She’s been giving Sydneysiders in the know some darn good nights out for a whole year now. Happy Birthday darlin’. As well as serving up their nowlegendary gourmet Hotdogs, the team at The Soda Factory clearly also know how to turn out a good party once the lights go down - having hosted afterparties and surprise shows from the likes of Jason Mraz, Bloc Party, The Rubens, DJ Jazzy Jeff & Grandmaster Flash. To mark an amazing first year, there will be a whole weekend of festivities on Friday and Saturday night, the 21st & 22nd Feb. It’ll be all the usual elements that make up an evening at The Soda Factory - delicious munchables served alongside killer cocktails & entertainment, but on this fabulous weekend there’s also a bit more in store. The Soda Factory is proud to announce the return of DJ Grandmaster Flash one of hip-hop’s first and most groundbreaking turntablists - jetting down all the way from New York City especially for Soda’s Saturday night party (Feb 22nd). “It was an amazing night when Grandmaster Flash performed with us last year, it’s rare for him to perform in such an intimate space, which meant that the atmosphere was electric - it seems only fitting to have him back for the 1st Birthday weekend” said bar owner Graham Cordery. As they blow out the candles, The Soda Factory will also unveil a couple of additions to their successful formula…. 28

ONE

Following the huge success of their hotdog menu, co-owner and Executive Chef Michael Chase will launch a full diner menu from Monday 17th February, 2014. The lit-up vintage American diner sign now hanging by the bar’s new diner section won’t let you forget it. Long tables have been fitted, accommodating larger groups to enjoy the expanded menu. With the full diner menu being available 5pm-10pm daily, & a late-night menu operating 10pm-late… Shall we talk food already? You thought their dogs were dreamy, get a load of this menu folks… Cheeseburger Spring Rolls, Mac and Cheese Spring Rolls, Kick Ass Hot Buffalo Chicken Wings (with a blue cheese dipping sauce!), Texas BBQ Bite Size Pork Ribs… and we’re just talkin’ starters and share snacks. As you wipe the drool off your chin, try to listen to these mains… Pulled Pork Burger with Slaw, Fried Chicken & Waffles with Maple Syrup, Long Island Fish and Chips, The Big Luck Veggie Burger & Doctor Claw’s Lobster Roll. There’s a selection of salads and sides on offer, or for those with a sweet tooth - try a range of alcoholic thickshakes or Ice Cream Cookie Sandwiches. Of course www.homesguide.com.au

The Soda Factory’s famous dogs such as the Johnny Drama and Fats Domino are also here to stay! Michael Chase commented “After the enormous popularity of our Gourmet Hotdogs, we wanted to truly bring an authentic taste of Americana to Surry Hills, with our take on the diner classics along with some special Soda surprises like the Cheeseburger spring rolls & Popcorn Shrimp.” To get a special taste test of some of these new dishes, pop down for Friday night’s party (Feb 21st) where bite-sized portions will be served up from 5-8pm, compliments of The Soda Factory, plus a free welcome drink on arrival from 5-7pm. Graham Cordery summed up the year “We’ve been absolutely blown away by the success of The Soda Factory in the first year, and we’re looking forward to expanding the concept this year and keep things interesting by launching our new full dinner menu and diner section of the bar. In true Soda Factory style there’ll also be some special guests dropping in over the next few months for intimate latenight performances – and you’ll never pay a cover charge”.

smoothie madness

M

aking a smoothie every morning as part of a daily routine is perhaps the best expenditure of your time and money you can make

FOR A TOXIN CLEANSE Depending on just how bad you were to your body over the weekend, or even over this summer, you might need more than just one of these beauties. Just remember to core your apples and pears. Ingredients: 1 handful spinach 1 green apple 1 pear 1 banana 1 cup pineapple Few splashes of apple juice

FOR A WHEATGRASS HIGH Wheatgrass might taste less then desirable to pretty much everybody, but it’s incredibly good for you. With the right types of fresh fruits, you can drown out its bad taste but still get the health benefits. It’s the smoothie that gets rid of the need to plug your nose like a five-year-old trying something new. Ingredients: 1 handful strawberries 1 banana ½ cup pineapple 2 shots wheatgrass juice 1 cup yogurt (plain or vanilla)

junk food alternatives N

o matter how hard you try, unhealthy foods are almost impossible to avoid. Junk food assaults us on our way to work, at the grocery store checkout and even on TV. While completely avoiding junk food is practically impossible, at the very least, you can satisfy your cravings by replacing junk foods with healthy substitutes. STOVETOP POPCORN Substitute for: Microwave popcorn A few years back, the public was shocked when workers at a popcorn factory fell ill to a condition known as popcorn lung. The respiratory disorder was caused by inhaling diacetyl, a chemical used to give bagged popcorn its buttery flavour. The risk to consumers eating popcorn was thought to be low; however, in 2007, American popcorn addict and self-proclaimed popcorn bag-sniffer, Wayne Watson, sued manufacturers after he developed popcorn lung. Only in America would that happen..... Anyway in Australia manufacturers have since made changes, but if you’re still concerned, why not pop your own organic corn?

DRIED FRUIT Substitute for: Lollies As far as nutritional content is concerned, lollies are about as bad as bad as it can get. Loaded with unhealthy refined sugar, candy offers nothing beneficial to the body -- no fibre, no protein, no vitamins or minerals -- only empty calories. Despite the fact that refined

sugar is firmly linked to obesity and diabetes, the average person consumes 11.2 kilos of lollies each year! To counter lollies cravings, try switching to dried fruit alternatives, like figs, apricots or dates. While still on the sweet side, these dried fruits are full of fiber and important minerals like potassium.

ORGANIC DARK CHOCOLATE Substitute for: Chocolate bars Let’s face it, some men and women absolutely adore chocolate. The problem is that many popular chocolate bars are high in calories, refined sugars and saturated fats -- all of which have been linked to adverse health events. Even more worrisome is that many lolly companies are silently substituting real cocoa for more cost-friendly alternatives like vegetable oil. The result is “chocolate-flavoured” lollies and not the real thing. To ensure that you are still getting heart-healthy flavonoids from your chocolate, substitute those brand-name chocolate bars for organic or milk-free dark chocolates that are high in cocoa content and free of additives.

ROASTED SWEET POTATO WEDGES Substitute for: French fries It’s no secret that French fries are the darling of the fast-food industry. This deep-fried finger food may taste great, but fries are also dangerously high in sodium, trans fat and calories. A large box of popular French fries will cost you anywhere from 500 to 600 calories. To satisfy those salty urges, whip up some homemade, oven-roasted sweet potato wedges instead.

Sweet potatoes are an excellent, antioxidant rich, anti-inflammatory alternative to white potatoes. Just brush with olive oil, add a pinch of sea salt and roast.

have a whole wheat pita pocket that are packed full of fiber and antioxidants like phenolic acid. Dip in hummus to add protein and flavour.

WHOLE WHEAT PITA POCKETS

ORGANIC PROBIOTIC YOGURT

Substitute for: Potato chips Potatoes are back on the most wanted list, only this time in the form of potato chips. Although the snack food industry is rapidly changing to meet the health demands of consumers, many chip varieties are still on the salty side and loaded with saturated fats. Potato chips, along with fries, have also been indicted for containing acrylamide, a possible cancer-causing chemical. Help your health by skipping chips next time you’re feeling snackish and instead

Substitute for: Ice cream Ice cream may be decadent and delicious, but it can be bad for your health. A 2003 study by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) found that a single scoop of premium ice cream contained about 250 to 350 calories and a half-a-day’s worth of saturated fat. To avoid this calorie-heavy nightmare, opt for organic probiotic yogurt. Early evidence on the health benefits of probiotic bacteria looks promising, with studies showing that probiotics can promote digestive health.

www.homesguide.com.au

Lastly, yogurt is also full of calcium.

OATS Substitute for: Sugary cereals Breakfast cereals can be full of empty calories, and some cereals touted as “healthy” have a great deal of added sugar and, often, little fiber. If you need a healthy breakfast alternative, try boiling some rolled oats. Oats help to stabilize blood sugar, reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and can lower your cholesterol. To improve taste, add a few antioxidantrich blueberries and granola, and you’ll be serving up some real health magic. Source: AskMen

spartans are you ready? Spartan race is the toughest, most competitive obstacle race series in the world. than what we could alone. This kind of competition builds friendship and camaraderie on the foundations of pride, respect and giving it all. This has been the Spartan way since 409BC. What happens after the race? Spartans fight hard and play hard. After the race there will be a beer at the finish on us, and plenty of good food and drink to be had as well as great brands displaying the latest training gear. There will also be a Spartan Kid’s race for young Spartans in training to cut their teeth on, and heaps of other challenges, comps demos and a tonne of prizes to be won.

W

ith 50+ events across America, Canada, Europe and now Australia, it has become a truly global race series. You will run, jump, crawl and climb over a selection of custom-built obstacles designed to test your overall strength, balance and endurance! The Spartan Race Series consists of 4 race distances, the 7K Sprint, the 15k Super, The 20K Beast and the 40K Ultra-Beast. Each Spartan Race event is run over one of these distances. Each distance comes with it’s own set of challenges. The first Australian races will be Sprints. Fast, intense but over a manageable distance, they are a perfect way to introduce the Spartan Race format and get a feel for the pace and the obstacles. As the season progresses, the race distances in each state will increase to Super, Beast and Ultra. Once we have achieved one distance, we train towards the next.

38

homesguideliving

Racers who complete the Sprint/Super/ Beast Trifecta in a season will be able to call themselves Ultimate Spartans, and earn the Spartan Trifecta Medal. Does the race format mean it’s ‘every man for himself’? No. OCRs often require teamwork to overcome obstacles. Spartan Race is no different. Honour and sportsmanship are at the heart of the Spartan Code. But Spartan Race is a race. It is timed and you will receive a finish time and a ranking. For some, this is an important way to keep motivated as they train for each new race. For others, it is the fun of competition between friends, or the pride of improving as a team. Whatever reason you race, you will discover that what makes Spartan Race special is the bond that develops between racers, regardless of you are racing as a team of neck and neck racing to the finish line. We push each other on the course to help stretch each other’s limits and achieve more www.homesguide.com.au

SPARTAN KIDS Spartan Race challenges us to be fearless, confident and committed. These are qualities we all try to develop in our kids, and there is no better way to inspire them to have a go, trust their abilities and have fun than by giving the chance to tackle a Spartan Kids course. Our 1k ‘Spartan Kids Junior’ (ages 3 – 8) and 2k ‘Spartan Big Kids’ (ages 9 – 14) events allow kids to try out obstacle course racing in a safe, fun environment, with plenty of challenges and, of course, mud. Obstacles are designed to for thrills and spills, as well as to improve balance, coordination, speed, strength, stamina and problem solving. Our mission is to help kids develop a love of fitness and a courageous, ‘can-do’ attitude at an early age. Most importantly, Spartan Kids get to hang out with family and friends, enjoy being part of an active community, and come away with a sense of achievement. And not a PS3 or a Xbox 360 in sight. Parents can accompany Spartan Kids Juniors on the course if necessary. Source: spartanrace.com.au

waves for a cure Julian Wilson hits the manly waves for a cure

P

ro surfer and National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) ambassador Julian Wilson hits the waves at the Hurley Australian Open of Surfing in Manly this week wearing specially designed pink boardshorts to raise funds and awareness to help find a cure for breast cancer. As the #1 seed at the Hurley Australian Open of Surfing Julian has taken the additional opportunity to promote the cause saying, “I traditionally wear the pink boardies and surf on my pink board at the Quiksilver Pro in March but as I had the Hurley Australian Open of Surfing in Manly happening beforehand I thought I’d double up and show them off at two high profile events.” The new award-winning Hurley Phantom boardshorts feature a special design created by Julian’s mother – who was diagnosed with breast cancer 14 years ago – that also features on Julian’s surfboards for the two events. Hurley are donating 100% of profits from the new boardshorts to the NBCF, along with money made on a range of other pink inspired men’s and women’s surfwear. Julian says, “I love Mum’s design and it’s exciting to see it on the boardies knowing that everyone will be able to take a piece of that home – while also raising money and awareness for the NBCF. By the time I reach the Quiksilver Pro they’ll be available for sale instore as well as online.” Adds Julian, “I’ve been with Hurley for about 12 months now and love the support they continue to show what I’m doing with the NBCF. I’d only just signed with them last year when they jumped straight in to help, but this year with more time behind us we’ve really put a lot into it, customizing the NBCF fundraising boarding incorporating Mum’s design.” Anna Cannella, Hurley Marketing Manager says, “Purchasing any of these Hurley products is a great way everyone

can get involved and contribute. All profits go straight back to NBCF and we’re excited to be able to support Julian for such a great cause.” Some of the fundraising line will be available at the Hurley Retail space at the Hurley Australian Open of Surfing, with the boardshorts on-sale from March. Julian was motivated to start his pink board fundraising initiative by his Mum’s battle with breast cancer some 13 years ago and has raised approximately $100K for research since he began his mission 5 years ago. The Hurley pink boardies with Nola’s design, and t-shirts and hats are a great way to show support and contribute to the campaign. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Australia, with a shocking one in eight women diagnosed in their lifetime. When NBC was founded, 30% of women diagnosed with breast cancer lost their battle. In less than 20 years, through

www.homesguide.com.au

research, that percentage has halved. NBCF does not receive any government funding, and relies on corporate and community initiatives like Julian Wilson’s fundraising with Hurley to help bring them one step closer to their aspirational goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. Julian’s pink board is not only a symbol of hope but also the power of the individual. It’s thanks to ambassadors like Julian and the companies like Hurley that support them that breast cancer research remains on the funding agenda. To support Julian’s NBCF fundraising initiative Hurley are donating profits from selected pink men’s and women’s surfwear – boardshort, t-shirts and hats - with profits being donated to research funded by NBCF. Available nationally via www.hurley.com and www.surfstitch.com.au and at Coolangatta Surf.

THE EMBROIDERY GIRL

SWEET CHARITY

THE EMBROIDERY GIRL

Our lucky number thirteen Short+Sweet Sydney theatre festival is taking place between 8th Jan 2014 - end Mar 2014. We will be showcasing 160+ brand new plays from NSW, Australian and international Writers, put together by the best up-andcoming and established Directors and performed by veteran actors and fresh new talent. Pete Malicki announced the program while launching the 13th (and his 3rd as festival director) annual festival of short plays - the biggest of its type in the world. 170 short plays - boasting the talents of 320 writers and directors and more than 450 actors - will take place in the inner west from 8 January. They will showcase the work of seasoned professionals, talented newcomers and even companies visiting from Malaysia and India. Pete enthused about the networking opportunities such a festival offers artists as well as a doorway to further fame and sometimes even fortune! “In 2009 when presenting my first Short+Sweet play I saw an amazing monologue by a young woman wrapped in bandages while talking about having sex with super villains. That actress was Steph Dawson who just recently landed herself a lead role as Annie Cresta in The Hunger Games.” Other Short+Sweet alumni include Rose Byrne and Brendan Cowell.

SWEET CHARITY

STATE THEATRE 18-19 February The story of the dance The Embroidery Girl takes place during the transition period from the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China. It tells the tragic love story of Xiu Niang, a girl who has mastered Suzhou Embroidery, and a painter named Ming Zuan. The dance/drama portrays a romantic heroine who together with her artist beau, fights against the feudal ethical code, and pursues her liberation from bondage as a concubine and captive of an arranged marriage. “There were several dances which could have stood alone… the music was especially composed for this production and telegraphed the ecstasy and agony experience by the characters… the stage design here was a spectacular tour de force! “The Embroidery Girl was a stunningly beautiful experience. When it comes to your town you must buy tickets for the entire family.” FRANCINE SCHWARTZ, Washington DC Metro Arts

HAYES THEATRE CO ONGOING UNTIL MARCH 9, 2014 The first show at the Hayes Theatre Co is an up-close and personal production of the classic musical Sweet Charity, produced by Luckiest Productions and Neil Gooding Productions. Sweet Charity will play at the Hayes Theatre Co from 7 February - 9 March 2014 If you believe in something hard enough, then eventually it has to come true, right? Charity Hope Valentine is the eternal optimist - a worldview that puts her distinctly at odds with her coworkers in a seedy, run-down dance hall. Dancing with man after man to pay her rent, she dreams of finally being whisked out of there and rescued by love. But can Charity wish her way into making love come true? Sweet Charity will be directed by Green Room Award winner Dean Bryant, and boasts an extraordinary list of musical theatre stars led by Verity Hunt-Ballard, who won the 2011 Helpmann Award as Best Actress in a Musical for her starmaking role as Mary Poppins. Other cast members include Helpmann nominees Martin Crewes (Dr Zhivago), and Debora Krizak (A Chorus Line), with Musical Direction by Andrew Worboys, choreography by Andrew Hallsworth, and costume and wig design by Academy Award and Tony winner Tim Chappel.

shadowland Other cast include; Lisa Sontag as Helene (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), Kuki Tipoki as Big Daddy, (The Boy From Oz), Kirby Burgess, (An Officer and a Gentleman), Rowena Vilar (Carmen in Fame The Musical), Stephanie Grigg, (Maggie in A Chorus Line), James Bryers, (Jersey Boys), Jakob Ambrose, (The Addams Family), Seann Matthew Moore, and Francesca O’Donnell. “It’s a privilege to present the opening production at Hayes Theatre Co. We’re thrilled that Sweet Charity will showcase the talents of some of the most exciting and respected performers in Australian musical theatre, as this vital new Sydney venue will give our creative team an opportunity to reimagined and revitalise this classic music theatre piece” - Richard Carroll, Luckiest Productions. Debuting on Broadway in 1966, Sweet Charity was a collaboration between some of Broadway’s most spectacular talents. Cy Coleman’s music effortlessly captures the rhythms and sounds, and Dorothy Fields lyrics the vernacular and fascination of the underground scene, in iconic musical numbers such as Big Spender, If My Friends Could See Me Now, and There’s Gotta Be Something Better Than This. Neil Simon’s razor-sharp script lifts the veil on the exquisite agony of living on the under-side of life. The legendary Bob Fosse directed and choreographed the original production, and was largely responsible for the musical’s distinctive and lasting identity. “I’m motivated by the iconic score of Sweet Charity contrasted against the milieu it depicts: marginalised women wanting better lives. Where better to explore this world than a jewel box theatre on the fringes of Kings Cross?” said director, Dean Bryant

an enchanting tale of illusion & dance SYDNEY THE STATE THEATRE 17 JUNE - 20 JUNE 2014 Shadowland, the ground-breaking new performance by internationally acclaimed dance troupe Pilobolus, is best described as part shadow act, part dance, part circus and part concert. For the first time in Australia, with more than 100 choreographic works performed in over 64 countries, Shadowlandwill be performing in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, and Perth from May - July 2014. As the first theatrical event of its kind to tour the globe, Shadowland incorporates multiple moving screens of different sizes and shapes to create an evening-length performance that merges projected images and front-ofscreen choreography. The story is a surreal experience of a young girl’s sensational world as she comesof age. Created in collaboration with lead writer for the popular animated series SpongeBob SquarePants Steven Banks, Shadowland is a universal and intimately portrayed experience that is both intensely dramatic and comedic.

It is set to a rhythmic original score by the popular American musician, producer, and film composer David Poe, whose poetic work for Shadowland ranges from ballads to hard-driving rock numbers that lift the audience out of its seats. His muchloved songs illuminate the themes and visuals of this fascinating story and world. The physical vocabularies of Pilobolus works are not drawn from traditions of codified dance movement but are invented, emerging from intense periods of improvisation and creative play. After its renowned shadow theatre performance on the 79th Annual Academy Awards, Pilobolus embarked on the creation of an evening-length movementtheater piece titled Shadowland. It was created in collaboration with Steven Banks, head writer for the hit Nickelodeon Show SpongeBob SquarePants, and singer-songwriter David Poe, who wrote a rollicking score. To date, Shadowland has performed over 200 shows world-wide, and is currently touring extensively around Europe.

A Good Agent’s Commission Rate is 2.99% for a very good reason!

If you are offered a super low rate, then it’s probably too good to be true! Remember if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys! A good example is, at some point in our lives, we all know somebody who has bought a “budget airline ticket” that turned out to be the most expensive short trip ever! By the time you add in all the extra fees and charges, it often ends up costing you more than buying a standard ticket from a prestige airline. The same applies for a low commission real estate agent who is looking to off load your property at any price to keep their overheads down, because in reality, the cheaper airlines & agents simply can’t afford to run their businesses at the low advertised rates.

THAT’S A MASSIVE $14,442.00 EXTRA IN YOUR POCKET!

In other words, this amount is the true hidden cost of employing the agent with the lowest commission rate! With Richardson & Wrench Umina Beach, there are no hidden fees and charges. We offer an all inclusive, prestige service, that includes a “run it till you sell it” marketing, advertising and internet campaign. We also have a NO SALE, NO FEE policy, so you won’t be up for any hidden fees if you decide not to sell your property.
