how to build a sandpit A sand pit is a great way to provide your children with a play area that you can monitor whilst they enjoy hours of activities. It is also a step-by-step project you can complete together with your children. Safety Always keep tools and materials away from children. Read the instructions before beginning your project. Do not burn timber off cuts as they contain toxins. Wear an approved dust mask when cutting, planing or sanding timber. ChooSe your Site Choose the site for your sand pit, taking into consideration trees and weather conditions, in particular exposure to the sun. Don’t build near a fruit tree such as a plum tree or you will have another job, cleaning the sand pit of rotten fruit. exCavation Prepare the ground. Once the size and position of the pit is determined, start to excavate the selected area to about 200mm below the grass or finished sand level. You can use the top layer of grass to repair bare spots in the lawn, or stack it upside-down in the compost. Dig out the dark-coloured top soil and add to compost or scatter in the garden. Prepare a flat bed for the sand to sit on. If your subsoil is clay or hard pan you may face drainage problems. To overcome this install a perforated
drainage pipe, drain tile or a deep hole in the middle of the pit and then cover with crushed rock, stones or coarse gravel and replace soil.
nails or spikes. If they are raised well above ground level, use 50x50mm pegs every half a metre to hold the panels in place.
Lay out your SLeeperS Lay out your timber sleepers once they have been cut to your chosen measurements. It’s a good idea to get some help from a friend to lay out the sleepers as they are heavy. Check that they are a suitable length, level and then fasten together using galvanised
fiLLing the pit Fill the pit with sand. Bunnings sells washed sand in 20kg bags. If you don’t have a vehicle or trailer suitable to transport your required load, enquire about Bunnings home delivery service. You may choose to lay a weed mat to reduce weed growth.

simple gift ideas for mum
M
other’s Day gifts are all about making mums feel good, and nothing fulfills that goal more directly than giving mum some gifts like these:
Spa and Massage Treatment After a lifetime of making you feel good when you needed it the most, treating her to a day of relaxation is one small way of paying her back. Buy it here: SpaFinder.com Flowers Though it may seem trite, there’s a reason why giving flowers on Mother’s Day is popular. Like flowers, being a mum is a beautiful thing, and beautiful things definitely deserve each other’s company. Gift Card This isn’t the type of gift we recommend every day, but in the case of mums who spend the majority of time shopping for others, receiving a gift card to their favourite shop can often break down their selflessness for a change and give them a reason to shop for themselves. Don’t assume, however, that you can pass this relatively easy gift off without putting some thought into some attractive packaging and a well-written card. Wine Sampler In this personalized wine-of-the-month club, you can send mom a sampler pack of six miniature bottles—after she goes online and rates her faves, she’ll score a shipment of 12 regular-sized bottles based on her preferences. Tasting Room One-Month Membership, $10 for sampler + $85 for first month shipment, tastingroom.com Snack Basket For foodie moms, send this grown-up care package stuffed with decadent treats like lavender cookies, dark chocolate cherries 10

and gourmet popcorn—all packaged and wrapped in a way that would make even picky moms proud. Mother’s Day Tower of Treats Gift Classic, $40, harryanddavid.com Polaroid Camera For a retro twist, give your mum a Polaroid camera. Harping back to the days when photo albums were kept on shelves and prints were instant, the Polaroid camera brings plenty of fun to family photos. Coffee Machine If your mum is a coffee lover, she really should have her own coffee machine. The Lavazza A Modo Mio means she can make the perfect authentic Italian espresso at home every morning, in under one minute. Lavazzo’s capsule technology provides freshness, grind and strength consistency for every cup. Lavazza A Modo Mio Premium by Electrolux – frosted almond RRP $249 www.lavazza.com.au O&M Mini Minerals Good, natural haircare products can be hard to come by, but Australian-made Original Mineral (or O&M) have got it bang on. Their unique philosophy is to favour quality botanicals and essential oils over harsh chemicals, and “keep it clean”. O&M products smell good enough to eat, and the packaging is beautifully designed. The O&M Mini Minerals pack means mum can take her pick from the best O&M products - and hit the road with them too. Mini Minerals Pack RRP $34.95 or $8.95 for individual Mini Minerals visit www. originalmineral.com
Shop on Etsy For something a little unique, source a handmade gift from thousands of arts and crafts on Etsy.com. a safe bet, but if you’re really looking to impress, sending an edible arrangement of her favourite fruit dipped in chocolate takes this gifting concept from the minor leagues to the pros. Made to be as beautiful as they are tasty, they’re also great for sharing when the family gets together. Or try, Cake Pop’s! mother’s day classic Make Mother’s Day, May 11 2014, memorable - register and fundraise!
ustralia is gearing up for the nation’s biggest charity fun run, the Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic, to show support for breast cancer research. Registrations are open now for the event, which will take place on Sunday May 11 at more than 80 locations around Australia including capital cities and regional areas. Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic is Australia’s largest breast cancer research fundraiser, and organisers are encouraging people to get on board for the Sunday May 11 event in the fight against a disease that impacts one in 8 women. Registrations are open now, you can find the event nearest you at www.mothersdayclassic.com.au/events. This year there will be 97 events around Australia - in every capital city as well as regional and rural locations in every state and territory, from Ararat (Vic) to Yamba (NSW), Karratha (WA) to Weipa (Qld). In 2013, a record $5 million was raised by 135,000 supporters who took part in the event around Australia. In 2014 a major milestone will be celebrated - the event, which began in 1998, will pass the $20 million mark in funds it has raised for the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s research program. This research has had a real impact on survival statistics and has also helped answer research questions for a range of other cancers. Mother’s Day Classic national chair, Louise Davidson, said as well as funding research, taking part in Mother’s Day Classic was also a wonderful way to show support and solidarity to those in the community dealing with breast cancer. “Participants will tell you there is something special about the atmosphere at the Mother’s Day Classic, whether you attend a huge capital city event or a small community gathering,” Ms Davidson said. Mother’s Day Classic is all about raising awareness and honouring those impacted by the disease, as well as funding vital

research into treatment, detection and prevention. “The more funds we raise, the faster a cure can be found. So instead of just registering this year, why not fundraise? Funding research is a great investment in the future,” Ms Davidson said. Major sponsor ME Bank is offering the ME Bank Inspiration Award to fundraisers. Raise $100 or more through online fundraising and you’ll be invited to take part and you could win $5,000 for a person who inspires you and $500 for yourself, in an ME Bank EveryDay Transaction Account with Pink Debit MasterCard*. Since the event began in 1998, Mother’s Day Classic has become the largest funder of National Breast Cancer Foundation research. In that time, 5 year survival rates for women diagnosed with breast cancer have increased to 89%.

nominAte For tHe First ever sydney Hills business AwArds For Community Contribution There are many fantastic businesses in the Sydney Hills doing wonderful work for the community, and Hills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne said it’s time for them to get some recognition. Mayor Byrne officially launched the Sydney Hills Business Awards for Community Contribution this morning at the Sydney Hills Business Chamber breakfast at The Mean Fiddler, Rouse Hill. The Sydney Hills has a reputation for being ‘generous’ at both an individual and corporate level, and many local businesses and organisations frequently donate time and funds to promote positive change within the community. “As the name suggests – our goal is to acknowledge those businesses that have made a contribution to our community,” Mayor Byrne said. “We want to see nominations for businesses that have donated time, money or resources to community initiatives. It may have been in the form of a donation of goods - like books for the library.” “It may have been a contribution of skills - like rebuilding a corner of the www.homesguide.com.au

Or maybe a business has given time - like providing a mentoring program for students.” You can nominate a business that has helped your community organisation by one of the following methods: Visit The Hills Shire Council’s website www.thehills.nsw.gov.au <http://www. thehills.nsw.gov.au> and fill out the online form – a link can be found on the home page. Contact Economic Development Officer, Stephen Garrard, on 9843 0324 for more information and assistance. Residents will be asked to submit an entry, explaining in around 200 words, what the nominated business has done for the community and why they think this is worthy of an award. All nominations received will be reviewed by an Awards panel, and entries will be sorted into a number of categories that will include opportunities for different sized businesses. An independent judging panel will assess nominations using a framework that evaluates the entry on the community impact it has made. Winners will be announced at a Civic Reception held at Council in August 2014.

make sure you’re not sipping out in the sun the drink that increases your risk of skin cancer
P
iña coladas and daiquiris may be part of what makes beachside vacations great, but new research shows there might be a reason to think twice before ordering that umbrella drink: Imbibing in the sun could increase your chances for skin cancer. A new analysis of 16 studies published in the British Journal of Dermatology concludes that downing more than one drink per day is associated with a 20% increased risk for melanoma, the most serious skin cancer type. Previous research has shown that adults who drink while spending time at the beach have higher sunburn rates than nondrinkers.
“downing more than one drink per day is associated with a 20% increased risk for melanoma” The reason: after having a drink, the body metabolizes alcohol into a compound called acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde may cause the skin to be more sensitive to the sun’s UV rays, which in turn increases the potential for cell damage that can ultimately lead to cancer.
26
homesguideliving
www.homesguide.com.au
But the simple fact that people tend to be less vigilant about sun safety while imbibing could play a role, too. “When you’re boozing at the beach, you’re less likely to be conscientious of applying sunscreen,” says Dr. Michael Shapiro, medical director of Vanguard Dermatology in New York City. If being a total poolside teetotaler isn’t likely for you, here’s how to stay safe in the sun: Slather up indoors. Applying sunscreen 30 minutes before heading outside doesn’t just give your skin ample time to absorb the stuff, but it also ensures you’re covered before you indulge—so there’s no chance of forgetting, Shapiro says. Set a one-drink limit. Consuming one or fewer drinks a day doesn’t appear to increase skin cancer risk. Plus, you’re more likely to still have enough wits about you to remember to reapply your lotion as needed. Find a designated reapplier. If just one drink tends to leave you a little forgetful, enlist help. “It’s almost like having a designated driver. Have someone who isn’t drinking remind you when it’s time to reapply,” Shapiro says. Usually, that’s every two hours, or after you’ve taken a dip. Source: from the editors of prevention.com

chinese herbal medicine Critics are calling for better regulation of this centuries-old industry.
Y
ou want to avoid colds and flu and you read somewhere that Chinese herbs can help. You buy a remedy online or visit a practitioner. After all, it’s a registered, regulated industry, right? Well, sort of. What you might not know is that in April, Australian customs officials seized Chinese medicines that contained potential allergens, toxins and ingredients obtained from protected animal species. Stringent regulAtion needed Apart from in Victoria, there is no government regulatory body for the industry. that will change on July 1, the date the government requires all Chinese medicine practitioners to register and meet minimum standards of education, training and english. “We welcome national registration,” says Judy James, Ceo of the Australian Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association (AACMA). “it’s been in place in Victoria since 2001, but we’ve lobbied for 30 years.” there are about 4000 practitioners in Australia. About 1200 are in Victoria, leaving almost 3000 who aren’t accredited unless they choose to join an association such as the AACMA, which has its own strict standards. But there is nothing to stop anyone from saying they are a Chinese medicine practitioner. regulation should stop that, but for some the proposed standards are not high enough. “there are currently medical boards for 10 health professions,” says dr Steve Hambleton, president of the Australian Medical Association. “they set strict
28
homesguideliving
standards for practitioners. For instance, gPs must complete almost 50 hours of continuing professional development (CPd) activities per year.” these are approved by the Australian Medical Council. if they don’t complete the activities, a practitioner can’t re-register, so they can’t practice. the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia is proposing 20 hours of CPd per year. “it should be on a par with the other professions,” dr Hambleton says. He believes regulation of the industry will offer some protection to the public, but could give kudos to a therapy that has yet to fully prove itself. He also questions how something with such varying levels of evidence can be regulated. “good and poor evidence exists,” he says. “We have an open mind. Many modern drugs come from herbs. the most effective antimalaria drug – artemether – comes from a plant. But we need more scientific evidence.” James believes more than 2000 years of continuous use is evidence enough. “there is a body of well-established literature that backs up the use of Chinese medicine, and guides diagnosis and treatment,” she says. “over centuries, it has developed into a complex theoretical framework. it’s coherent and internally consistent. evidence has been gathered over many years of practical and clinical testing in the field, as well as clinical trials.” eVolVing An eVolV ol ing ForM oF HeAltH CAre olV “it’s 2000 years of anecdotes, not strong, scientific evidence,” Dr Hambleton says. “experience is important, but it
www.homesguide.com.au
doesn’t beat double-blind, randomised, controlled tests.” And what about those toxic ingredients? James says the fact that they were discovered proves current regulations are working. “those products were not approved for sale in Australia,” she says. “the therapeutic goods Administration strictly regulates what can be sold. The items seized were manufactured overseas. We can’t control them, but we can control what enters our market and that’s what happened.” For James, Chinese medicine is a living and evolving form of health care that, if carried out by a qualified practitioner, can be finely tuned to address an individual’s health problems. She thinks such individualisation of treatment is one reason why some research may not do Chinese medicine justice. “it’s not one herb fits all,” she says. “Doubleblind clinical trials work well for single ingredients, but Chinese medicine is about complex combinations of herbs tailored to an individual’s needs. if you’re in the hands of a qualified practitioner – which regulation will ensure – it is a safe form of treatment.” For dr Hambleton, Chinese medicine is a grey area: “i’d like to see more evidence and i want people to understand what evidence is available. if you’re still happy to spend money on Chinese medicine, fine, but you deserve to know what level of evidence backs up the claims.”

for the love of music
T
unes can actually help improve your fitness. Here are six ways music can help you score your best figure yet. You’ll set a better pace. A study in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found that cyclists pedaling to music at the same speed as the tune’s beat reported less discomfort. Experts say the same goes for running; when you’re running pace is in sync with your music, you’ll perform better. Download an app like SpringMove that makes playlists based on your running speed and music preferences. You’ll work harder. When you need to pump out that last rep, pump up your music—literally. A recent study found that when music was at the highest volume, women could do seven more leg presses than when it was at the lowest volume. You’ll last longer. A Brunel University study found that listening to music increases your exercise endurance by 15 percent, especially during cardio workouts. So whether it’s that last kilometre on the treadmill or the last hill of a spin class, researchers found that music helped exercisers maintain a positive attitude about high-intensity exercise.
You’ll feel less exhausted. You know how a good playlist can make a hard workout seem effortless? Research in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that listening to music not only distracts you from how hard you’re working, but also makes physical exertion less exhausting. You’ll see better results. Another study found that people who listened to self-selected motivational music during resistance workouts saw greater improvements over four weeks than those who didn’t listen to music at all. Plan your playlist before you get to the gym—you’ll save time fiddling with your iPod and ensure you love every song that comes up. You’ll keep moving after. Save some tunes for when you hit your foam roller after a long workout. A study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that athletes who listened to motivational music during recovery were more likely to move afterwards, cleared lactic acid out of their system faster, and had a lower perceived exertion level than those who didn’t listen to music.

The news of the women’s charitable venture spreads like wildfire, and hordes of press soon descend on the small village of Knapeley in the Yorkshire Dales (UK). The calendar is a huge success, but Chris and Annie’s friendship is put to the test under the strain of their new-found fame.
reForMation www.whiterabbitcollection.org 30 Baltone Street, Chippendale Ph: 02 8399 2867 ongoing until 1 July 2014 The White Rabbit Gallery presents the best of 21st Century contemporary art from China and Taiwan. Today China is home to a creative reformation that is changing Chinese and contemporary art alike. It draws inspiration from calligraphy and Impressionist painting, Taoism and the Internet, Beijing street life and global business, kung fu and genetic science. Some artists are reinventing traditional Chinese forms using video, plastic and robots. For others, the message is all that www.homesguide.com.au
matters; their artistic language is a global one, with hardly a hint of ‘Chinese’. REFORMATION shows this vibrant avantgarde at their best: confident, audacious, commercially savvy, the boldest experimenters in what the head of China’s national art academy calls “the most experimental country in the world”.

BRETT WHITELEY: PORTRAITS
IT’S TIMELY
www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au Art Gallery road, The Domain Ph: 02 9225 1700 23 May – 28 Sep 2014
www.artscentre.blacktown.nsw.gov.au 78 Flushcombe Rd, Blacktown Ph: 02 9839 6558 29 Apr - 28 Jun 2014
Portraiture for Whiteley was an insight into the psychology of the human condition. There are critically acclaimed self-portraits, such as Self-portrait in the studio 1976 and Art, life and the other thing 1978, both of which won the prestigious Archibald Prize. Here the artist reveals layers of himself and defines portraiture as something beyond the physical to include his environment, personal and artistic influences, good and bad. Incredibly honest, his works on this subject cover the range of human emotion and pay homage to a legacy of artists and writers whom he admired – Francis Bacon, Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Arthur Rimbaud and Henri Matisse. Whiteley’s most ambitious attempt at portraiture is the 18-panelled work titled Alchemy 1972–73. Exploring dualities – love and hate, life and death, order and chaos, potential and opportunities lived and lost – it is a fascinating journey into addiction, the perceptions of identity, and the celebration of human experiences as well as the fears.
In partnership with The Whitlam Institute, University of Western Sydney. In the early 1970s, Australians were demanding social change, rallying for sexual and racial equality and against the Vietnam War. In this climate of disquiet, Edward Gough Whitlam, first as opposition leader and then as Prime Minister, journeyed to Blacktown to deliver two of the most iconic speeches in Australian history. Whitlam chose Blacktown because the area and its people represented the opportunity, diversity and complexity of the nation - as it still does today. The It’s Timely exhibition is framed by the two speeches Whitlam delivered in Blacktown in 1972 and 1974, and its images document the changes that completely transformed life and culture in the island continent. Artists active at the time will be joined by those who came of age, or to Australia, as a result of the policies and legacies of the Whitlam Government. The opening of the exhibition will be held on Tuesday 29 April - the 40th anniversary of Whitlam’s ALP Policy Speech in Bowman Hall, Blacktown.

the power of pets Research shows animals can improve your heatlh
T
he use of animals in the care and healing of the sick and the sad is growing in popularity – and its success is backed by research. Our furry, feathered and scaled friends are turning up more and more in therapists’ rooms, aged care facilities and hospitals thanks to their healing powers. The treatment is called animal-assisted therapy, and it involves pets being used to help people who are sick or suffering from depression or anxiety. Overseas, there are university courses in the field, while here in Australia universities such as Monash in Melbourne are investigating how animals can assist humans in getting well.
Helping abused kids Researchers at the Monash Injury Research Institute recently completed a pilot study that used animals such as guinea pigs and rabbits to teach empathy to children who’d experienced domestic violence 34

and to help instil greater coping skills. The study, which was carried out over a period of two years, found that the children who benefited most from animalassisted therapy were those who didn’t trust adults, were sad or acting out in aggressive ways and hadn’t responded to traditional methods of counselling. “The children recognise they’re in charge of a vulnerable being such as a guinea pig,” lead researcher Dr Neerosh Mudaly says. “They learn empathy and control, and often take these lessons back into their families, where perhaps they bullied their more vulnerable younger siblings.” Repeated experiences of gentle, calming contact with small animals in a safe environment appears to have a “dramatic effect” in helping children heal from abuse and violence, Dr Mudaly says. “It may also help break the cycle of violence and abuse that these children
may carry adulthood.”

Healing souls Melbourne psychologist Melanie Jones has two “working dogs” – a playful labrador and a gentle mini schnoodle (schnauzer/poodle). Together, this trio works with people needing the help of a psychologist, but who may have trouble trusting, communicating and engaging with another person. “I can use my dogs’ very different personalities to show how people can also have very different personalities,” Jones says. “Dogs are also good at reading emotional situations. They’ll react and respond to different behaviours, which helps clients see how their own emotional responses can impact on others.” Nerys Lewis, who runs Empathy Education & Training as part of the Monash study, says a key reason why animals are effective in therapy is that they greatly shorten the period of relationship-building between client and therapist. “There’s something about the presence of a relaxed and happy animal that suggests the accompanying human can be trusted,” she says. “This is particularly true of children.”
Canine Counsellors In the US, dogs’ ability to respond to moods has been used in marriage counselling. Colorado therapist Ellen Winston brings her canine assistant Sasha to sessions. When the clients are upset, they get comfort from patting Sasha, who sits between them. But if the couple yell at each other, Sasha will walk to the door to leave. Winston uses those moments as teaching points. Jones says there’s a strong future for animal-assisted therapies, with research piling up to show how effective it can be. She cites a study that found preschool kids were better able to follow directions during assigned tasks if they were accompanied by a trained poodle rather than when they were alone, with another human or had a stuffed toy with them. Animals are also being used in the treatment of autistic kids, while in agedcare facilities they’ve been found to calm dementia patients while also improving the happiness levels of residents and encouraging them to stay healthy because they feel needed. “Research has shown that for some people, having an animal involved in the therapy can be the difference between
the treatment being successful or not,” Jones says. “Having animals involved has been found to promote the ‘oxytocin effect’ – the feelgood chemical linked with bonding and love. If animals help humans produce oxytocin, it helps us to engage more, lower stress and better respond to treatment.”
