URBAN DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE OF AUSTRALIA
AUSTRALIAN RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE YEAR 2014
WHAT IS THE URBAN DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE OF AUSTRALIA?
Harrington Grove was honoured to be named Australian Residential Development of the Year (2014) by the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) at the National Awards for Excellence Gala Dinner on Friday 28 March 2014. The UDIA National Awards for Excellence celebrates the outstanding achievements of high quality property developments. Harrington Grove is proud to be nationally recognised for its finesse and innovation in delivering the best residential development in Australia.
In presenting the award to Harrington Grove, the judges noted the holistic approach and respect for the natural environment. “The judges were particularly impressed by the overall quality of the development and attention to detail in every facet of the project. The restoration of bushland and creek lines, and their integration with the residential precincts, is exemplary,” they said.
LETTER FROM LADY (MARY) FAIRFAX AC, OBE I am extremely proud that Harrington Grove has won the award for the best residential development in Australia. I commenced the development of the Harrington Park country estate back in 1993 with Terry Goldacre. At that time the vision I shared with Terry was the creation of a vibrant, happy community in a new suburb that would be home to more than 10,000 people.
I have special memories of the many happy times spent on the estate with my late husband, Sir Warwick Fairfax and our family. It gives me great pleasure that the estate is now providing other families with equally happy times. To bring the vision into creation Terry Goldacre and the community team have given their best efforts over a long period. I am extremely proud that, as result of their efforts, Harrington Grove has won the award for being the best development in Australia from the prestigious Urban Development Institute of Australia. All this could not have been achieved without the support given by the Councillors and staff of Camden Council. I would like to thank them for the support and guidance they have given over the years. Particular thanks for his support to our local state member, Chris Patterson, who was also the mayor of Camden during the early years of the development. This award is shared with the residents of Harrington Park and Harrington Grove. Let us all celebrate the event. Kindest regards,
Lady (Mary) Fairfax AC, OBE
L-R: State Member for Camden Chris Patterson, Harrington Grove resident Donna Wickman, Camden Mayor Lara Symkowiak, Harrington Estates Managing Director Terry Goldacre, Harrington Grove resident Julie Smyth, Camden Councillor Peter Sidgreaves, Harrington Estates Development Director Trevor Jensen, Harrington Estates Development Manager Tina Sewell.

STATE MEMBER COMMENDS COLLABORATION BETWEEN DEVELOPERS AND GOVERNMENT
ENGINEERING HAPPY COMMUNITIES
Harrington Park and Harrington Grove set the foundation for all good development in the area and the collaboration between all levels of government has set the benchmark for other developments to follow. We thank Harrington Grove for its acknowledgment of the State Government in showing leadership in the area by investing in infrastructure that’s needed to further the growth of the area in a great way. Chris Patterson MP, Member for Camden
Brown Consulting (NSW) has a long association with Harrington Grove in providing consulting engineering services. We congratulate the Harrington Grove team on being awarded Australian Residential Development of the Year and their ongoing success in creating a vibrant community of which the residents can be justifiably proud. Greg Morgan, Manager – Project Delivery, Brown Consulting (NSW) Pty Ltd
THE FAIRFAX VISION IS REALISED: LOCAL COUNCILLOR
CAMDEN MAYOR: HARRINGTON GROVE ENRICHES LOCAL COMMUNITY
Congratulations to Harrington Grove for winning the top honour of 2014 Australian Residential Development of the Year. The prestigious award is tribute to the commitment that Harrington Estates has for delivering high quality residential developments with the community and environment at their core. Harrington Estates doesn’t just build developments, they build connected and cohesive communities.
On behalf of Camden Council, I would like to congratulate Harrington Grove on being nationally recognised as the best Residential Development in Australia.
Harrington Grove has taken from Sir Warwick and Lady Mary Fairfax’s original vision for an exclusive private estate and delivered an exclusive residential estate for all of their community to enjoy. Cr Peter Sidgreaves, Camden Municipal Council
It has long been known that you have set the benchmark for housing development in the Camden Local Government Area with Harrington Park when it was developed and now with Harrington Grove. You are not simply building a development, but building a fantastic connected and enriched community, which is certainly a goal of Camden Council in developing better economic, social and environmental outcomes for the local area.
Camden Council would also like to extend its appreciation to Harrington Grove for enriching the community by preserving the environmental and cultural heritage of the area. Cr Lara Symkowiak, Mayor of Camden Municipal Council
THE NEW WAY OF LIVING
The wealth of facilities at Harrington Grove makes the lifestyle unique and fulfilling. Residents enjoy exclusive access to two swimming pools, four tennis courts, a well-equipped gym, community function rooms, barbecue facilities, playgrounds, fitness stations and a network of pathways and cycleways. Even more crucial than the facilities is the bounty of programs and events that promote community interaction and oneness. Highlights include the annual Harrington Grove Fun Run, the Spring Fair, monthly Residents’ Rendezvous, poolside dining events and Christmas and Easter festivities. The strong community spirit has led to close relationships between residents that has strengthened the entire community, forming a strong social fabric that forms the core of Harrington Grove.
LANDSCAPING A WINNING ESTATE Since the beginning, the unique combination of the landscape and the natural bushland has played a key role in drawing in residents to the Harrington Grove estate. The design of the landscaping not only blends the urban and rural aspects, but also pays homage to the land’s natural heritage through the choices of timber and trees that are used. The win is a massive accomplishment for Harrington Grove, and the maintenance team is extremely proud of the result. It is prestige recognition for the estate and justifies the structural planning and the effort involved. The maintenance team and landscape designers are thankful for the acknowledgement and will continue taking the upmost pride in all areas of the estate. Dave Van Houten, Grove Elite Maintenance

WHY HARRINGTON GROVE IS THE BEST ADDRESS It is no surprise to residents that Harrington Grove has been awarded the best residential development 2014 – they have known it all along.
Resident Donna Wickman has called Harrington Grove home for the past year and has been pleasantly surprised with the relationships she and her family have developed. “I’m amazed to have made so many friends in such a short amount of time through community events like the Residents’ Rendezvous. I know everyone in our street and we have all become friends, so we socialise all the time. The staff at the Country Club are also really friendly and helpful. They make you feel at home which is great,” she says. From the first moment she visited the estate, resident of 18 months Julie Smyth knew she was at home. “We absolutely love living here. From the moment we put a deposit on the land it felt like home. All of the facilities are here for us to use, and it is just stunning. Before we had even moved in we had that strong sense of community,” she says.
L - R: Resident Donna Wickman, Managing Director Terry Goldacre and resident Julie Smyth.
NURTURING THE LARGEST PRIVATE CONSERVATION AREA IN NSW Harrington Grove contains the largest privately owned and managed conservation area of Cumberland Plain Woodland – a critically endangered ecological community – with over 262 hectares (647 acres) of land preserved in its natural state. The existence of the woodland area was a major consideration in the planning of the development. The treatment of the bushland and the consideration of its future care and maintenance led to the form and marketing of the development.
The Harrington Grove development covers a total area of 486 hectares (1200 acres) but only 40% of this will be developed. The remaining 60% (720 acres) will remain natural bushland, maintained by the community scheme of Harrington Grove. When completed, the estate will contain approximately 1400 homes in discrete precincts that are integrated with the bushland.
Harrington Estates worked closely with Camden Council and NSW National Parks and Wildlife to develop a model where urban development would fund the long-term protection and maintenance of the largest privately owned conservation area in NSW.
A GROUND-BREAKING ACHIEVEMENT On behalf of TRN Group we extend our congratulations to Harrington Grove on the success of this year’s UDIA Australian Residential Development of the Year award. This industry-recognised achievement is a true statement of the professionalism, dedication and vision of the Harrington Grove team. We have had the pleasure of witnessing this first-hand through our continuing working relationship which began in 1999 with the early stages of Harrington Park and has continued into the development of Harrington Grove, which has become a coveted address within the Camden/Macarthur Area. We wish them continued success in the further development of this superb community neighbourhood. Glen Downey, Project Manager, TRN Group
THE BEST LAID PLANS CREATE THE BEST ESTATE Winning the UDIA Australian Residential Development of the Year 2014 is a huge tribute to Harrington Grove and signifies deserved recognition from industry peers. We congratulate Harrington Estates and the Fairfax Group for receiving the UDIA National Award. Development Planning Strategies (DPS) is pleased to be involved in the creation of an exceptional community-based residential development that will be permanently meaningful for those who will live there. DPS is proud to provide urban design and planning services to the developers of Harrington Grove and to be part of the delivery team for this restigious project. The streets are lined with market stalls and everybody who attends is encouraged to dress in costume. Unlike many Festivals run by Chambers of Commerce and Councils, this event is run by community. Cosy and rustic, cheap and chic – this Surry Hills icon is the perfect place to grab a scotch or sparkling ale and while away a rainy arvo by the fire watching the footy and digging into tapas with a labrador dozing at your feet. council watch News and updates by the hills shire council New MiNisters Urged to PUsh AheAd with LocAL goverNMeNt ANd PLANNiNg reforMs The newly announced NSW Government Ministers for Planning and Local Government need to push on with much-needed reforms according to Hills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne. Mayor Byrne congratulated the Planning Minister Pru Goward and Local Government Minister Paul Toole on their new roles, but urged them to steamroll ahead with changes that had been discussed for the last three years. “I want to congratulate the Ministers on their new portfolios and I wish them all the best. But we would certainly welcome the chance to meet with them and make our case for local government reform and an overhaul of the planning system,” Mayor Byrne said. “It really is time to fix this fundamentally flawed planning system. We’ve had 15 years of planning failure and we need the new Minister to remedy that.” “We need code-assessable development, we need to scrap Regional Planning Panels and we need to give local planning back to local communities.” Mayor Byrne said it was also time to fix local government before it was too late. “We’ve got too many councils in NSW, with too many of them being propped up by grants. We need to push on with the reforms recommended by the Independent Local Government Review Panel.” “The Hills Shire Council is one of the few that has not adopted a headin-the-sand approach and opted to actually endorse a positive plan for the future. We unanimously voted to alter our boundaries with Hornsby, Hawkesbury and Parramatta to form a new, larger Council.” “We would be happy to speak to Minister Toole about our proposal and 20

New dePots oPeN throUghoUt the sydNey hiLLs The move from the old administration centre at Showground Road, Castle Hill to Norwest Business Park presented Council with an opportunity to decentralise its operational depot and move workers out further into the field. This week, Council opened two of its new depots; at Conie Avenue, Baulkham Hills and next door to the new administration centre at Columbia Court, Norwest Business Park, Baulkham Hills. Hills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne said it meant the full move out of the old administration centre on Showground Road was now complete. “While we moved the bulk of our operations from Showground Road in December 2013, we still had some of our place management teams working from the old administration building,” Mayor Byrne said. “They are now out of Showground Road and into our new depots throughout the Sydney Hills.” Mayor Byrne said another smaller www.homesguide.com.au
satellite depot would also open at Les Shore Reserve, Glenorie in late 2014. “The Hills Shire Council is one of Sydney’s largest local government areas in terms of geographical size. Getting from one end of the Shire to the other can take more than an hour,” Mayor Byrne said. “Having workers out closer to their respective patches will make it much easier for them to get around. This is a far more efficient approach to serving the residents and ratepayers of the Sydney Hills.” New depots • Columbia Court, Norwest Business Park, Baulkham Hills - Servicing Central and North Ward • Gibbon Road, Baulkham Hills Servicing West Ward + Fleet Workshop • Conie Avenue, Baulkham Hills – Servicing East Ward temporarily Potential depots • Les Shore Reserve, Glenorie – Satellite depot planned for North Ward, due to open in late 2014 • Ted Horwood Reserve, Baulkham Hills – East Ward Depot to replace Conie Avenue, planned in conjunction with a redeveloped community nursery.

diabetes fighters Want to prevent or treat diabetes? Don’t look to your medicine cabinet– start with your kitchen. Making a few small but significant tweaks to your diet can regulate your blood sugar and have profound effects on your overall health.
Tumeric
sTrawberries
Good news for curry lovers: Curcumin, a compound found in turmeric, may help delay or prevent the progression of diabetes, finds a new study in the journal Diabetes Care. Researchers looked at 240 people with high blood sugar, but not high enough to warrant a diagnosis of diabetes. Half the group received a 1,500-milligram (mg) pill of curcumin extract daily, while the rest received a placebo. After 9 months, 16.4 percent of the placebo group developed diabetes. And the curcumin group? Not one. More research is needed to determine the long-term effects of curcumin, but these early results are promising. In the meantime, add a hit of turmeric to your sautéed vegetables.
British scientists recently found that an extract from the strawberry helps your body activate a protein that decreases blood lipids and LDL cholesterol— both of which can factor into the development of type 2 diabetes. And a preliminary study published in the British Journal of Nutrition earlier this year finds strawberries can help lower blood glucose levels in mice.
NuTs People who reported eating at least a quarter-ounce of nuts per day had a 5 percent lower prevalence of metabolic syndrome, a combination of risk factors that can lead to type 2 diabetes, found a 2011 study from Louisiana State University. Opt for an ounce a day— about a handful.
red wiNe You already knew red wine was a sure fire health booster, but it may be a powerful diabetes fighter as well. A Polish review of current research finds that resveratrol, the seemingly superpowered compound found in grape skins, can help improve the function of the blood sugar–regulating hormone insulin and reduce blood glucose levels. Most of the resveratrol data are from animal studies, so further research is needed to find out how the compound functions in humans. But researchers agree that moderate consumption of red wine— that’s no more than two glasses daily for men—is good for you. Cheers to that!
dark chocolaTe cheese aNd YogurT People who consumed the most fermented dairy products—things like yogurt, cheese, and fermented milk such as kefir—had a 12 percent reduced risk of diabetes compared to people who ate the least fermented dairy, according to a recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers believe the healthy bacteria found in fermented foods may be partly to thank. 30

According to a review in the British Medical Journal, those who regularly treated themselves to chocolate had a 31 percent reduced risk of diabetes—not to mention a 37 percent reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and a 29 percent reduction in stroke risk—compared with infrequent chocolate eaters. The studies looked at all kinds of chocolate, but for health-boosting effects, the dark stuff’s your best bet. Past research has found dark chocolate can improve insulin sensitivity and reduce both blood pressure and insulin resistance. To get a health boost
without the calorie bomb, look for a higher percentage of cacao—the darker the chocolate, the less sugar it contains.
Cinnamon Eating cinnamon can lower fasting blood glucose, according to a 2011 review by scientists at UC-Davis. That’s on top of its other benefits: the spice has been shown to lower LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and improve insulin sensitivity. Stir a spoonful into your morning coffee, sprinkle some on toast, or add it to your oatmeal.
Coffee Your morning cup of joe does more than just perk you up: A new report in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry finds that the beverage contains compounds that inhibit a hormone that plays a role in diabetes. Past studies have found that those who sip four or more cups of coffee daily have a 50 percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
apples A study published in April in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds that higher consumption of anthocyanin-rich fruits like apples, pears, and
blueberries is linked with a 23 percent lower risk of type 2 diabetes. Eat at least five servings a week to reap maximum benefits.
spinaCh and Kale You already know that green leafy vegetables are nutritional powerhouses, but did you know they may slash your diabetes risk? According to a 2010 review in the British Medical Journal found that an increase of only 1.15 servings daily can decrease your risk for diabetes by 14 percent. Swap spinach for lettuce in salads and sandwiches, roast up some kale chips, or add a serving to a smoothie to cram in an extra daily dose of greens.
in your body, may lead to an increase in blood sugar. How? When you don’t drink enough water, your vasopressin levels go up, and past research has found higher vasopressin levels mean higher blood sugar. Source: By Lila Battis
Wheat Bran A 2011 review article in Diabetes Care supports past evidence that high intake of magnesium can lower your chances of developing type 2 diabetes, particularly if you’re overweight. The mineral is found in a variety of vegetables and whole grains, but wheat bran is one of the best sources—only ¼ cup will give you 22 percent of your daily magnesium requirements.
Water No, it’s not a food, but it’s vital to your health. French scientists looked at over 3,000 participants over a period of 9 years and found that those who drank the most water—more than 33 ounces each day— were 21 percent less likely to have high blood sugar than less-frequent sippers. Researchers believe increased levels of vasopressin, the hormone that regulates water levels www.homesguide.com.au

quirky sports to try From dancing with dogs to underwater hockey, the ten strangest physical pursuits Sydney has to offer. underwater hoCkey You need a mask and snorkel for this type of hockey, played in two teams of six and requiring players to move pucks across the pool floor with rubber bats. One of the world’s worst spectator sports, but a blast to play. Play it at: Ryde Aquatic Centre, 504 Victoria Road, Ryde 2122. 02 8878 5111. Homebush Aquatic Centre. best sydney walks Your feet are the best exercise equipment you have: here are the top 8 ways to use them in Sydney! CirCular Quay to BotaniC Gardens Not just for tourists, this walk showcases our prized architectural icons from great angles. And you can throw in a culture combo and hit the MCA and AGNSW at either end if you so desire it. From Circular Quay to the AGNSW. Easy. 1 hour. Bondi to CooGee Cliffwalk When you have visitors in town this is the hands-down first thing that we recommend they do. Most just do the standard Bondi to Bronte route, but the path through Waverley Cemetery en route to Coogee is the best bit. From Notts Ave, Bondi to Arden St, Coogee. Moderate. 3 hours. razorhurst Razorhurst is at once an interactive game set in the ’20s and a historical walking tour – you just need to get the app. Palmer Street’s Village hotel, one of Kate Leigh’s favoured haunts, is the starting point. Leigh was the brothelkeeping, sly grog-operating queen of the Sydney underworld and in the game her sly grog stash is seized and destroyed during a police raid so players must help her replenish stocks as they tour the bygone underworld hot spots. Start and
end at the Village Hotel, Darlinghurst. Easy. 1 Hour. Manly BeaCh to spit BridGe The north side’s answer to the Bondi to Coogee has multiple access points and great views. The scenic walkway is also split into smaller strolls of between 600m and 2km, all of varying walking grades. Barrenjoey liGhthouse traCk This weekend walk involves a quick road trip up to Palmy, but the high climb offered up to Barrenjoey Lighthouse once you get there offers amazing views of the sea, Pittwater and the national park. From the northern end of Palm Beach to Barrenjoey Lighthouse. Difficult – that ridge is steep. 1.5 hours. Gunner’s walk Amble around the historic North Head site, past military remnants, the former School of Artillery Building and the Quarantine Cemetery and take in spectacular views from the headland’s multiple lookouts. You can even shimmy into the abandoned tunnels if you dare (just don’t blame us if you get caught). A loop from the Gatehouse Visitors Centre, North Head. Easy 1.5-2 hours www.homesguide.com.au
Moonwalk: sunset to sunrise Sydney Moonwalks offers budding photographers a spectacular handson workshop opportunity. The night tour begins with a candlelit dinner at the Wattamolla Lagoon, where participants meet their tour guides and take up brightly coloured glow sticks and lights before heading south into the night along the coastal track. Along the way there’s a chance to indulge in tidbits of rich Aboriginal and European history, observe the local nocturnal flora and fauna and have a midnight cup of tea while participating in a night photography lesson on the ragged cliffs. Breakfast is served at sunrise the next day to take full advantage of more golden photo opportunities. Royal National Park. Moonwalks. Moderate. Overnight. $249 including dinner, photography lesson, and breakfast. BYO sleeping bag. sydney harBour CirCle walk If you’re after a safe and accessible amble, the Sydney Harbour Circle Walk is for you. All up, it’s 60km and will take you a whopping four days, but you can just do a little slice if you like. dogs in the workplace Bringing your dog to work is one way to lower stress levels and a more broad minded way of looking at work-life balance.
T
he PAW (Pooch At Work) or Office Dog theory is simple. It states that: a Fido by the filing cabinet, a Rover in reception and a bone under the boardroom table make all the difference on the mental health and wellbeing of even the most harassed of staff. “Human feel-good hormones (endorphins) are released with a dog nearby in stressful situations”, says Dr Roger Henderson, author of Stress Beaters: 100 Proven Ways To Manage Stress, and a contributor to Stressbusting. “But it’s a mystery as to why.” The benefits of having an office dog include reduced nerves, indigestion, headaches, coughs and tiredness. “I would like to see many more dogs involved in working environments”, enthuses Henderson.
The effecT on blood pressure Research in America, meanwhile, has shown that stroking a dog can help reduce stress and lower blood pressure. The explanation, concludes Desmond Morris, the zoologist and people-watcher, 34
homesguideliving
is that stroking a dog is an outlet for “practical and comforting ancient primate grooming urges”. But, as Dr James Serpell of the Companion Research Group in Cambridge, notes: “It’s not as simple as just being about stroking, because dogs seem to have the same effect if they are merely in the room.”
“If more people had an office dog, then staff would be able to take a break and laugh throughout the day.” The rise of The office dog Advertising agencies are traditionally stressful places to work, but one character leading a dog’s life is Monsieur Brown, a Lurcher who is top dog at the Kunde & Co, an ad agency in central London. Brown spends his time poodling around the premises. All Kunde & Co’s staff can be seen www.homesguide.com.au
intermittently walking past and rubbing behind Brown’s ears and feeding him nibbles. “He’s lovely and very soothing, he really is”, says Karime Kendra, the firm’s receptionist. “Today, one of the ladies was feeling really moody and she snapped ‘I’m going to take Monsieur Brown for walkies!’. She came back 15 minutes later a changed woman.” When Karime takes Brown walking she talks out loud to him about office matters. “It excuses me from looking insane, for one thing!” she says. Another company experiencing good results with an office dog is the publicity agency Borkowski PR. Employee Karon Maskill brings her dog Tess into work at the firm’s central London office. “She often breaks the ice with clients”, says Maskill. “I remember Mark Lamarr playing with her outside an important meeting and she now has a real thing about Leo Sayer; she recognises him on the telly after having met him in the office. I think the other staff enjoy Tess rooting through their bins for food every lunch time; in fact, she’s so popular that there’s a picture of her on
our website where she’s described as our new MD.”
Office dOgs wOrking 9-5 Graham Hill, who runs the music management company, HPR, is another advocate of pet therapy. “George, my Miniature Schnauzer, comes in to the office fives days a week. He’s a great excuse for all of us to let off steam – if you’re stressed you can play with him and his pull-rope, or take him for a walk, and get out of the office for a while.” Hill’s clients include Jonathan Wilkes, the singer and close friend of Robbie Williams. “George hung out with the two of us at the studio, when Jonathan was recording, so now he’s officially a rock’n’roll dog. In fact, most of my clients love him. Sometimes, if I’m playing golf with one, George will come along and help retrieve the balls.” Hill urges other companies to take note: “If more people had an office dog, then staff would be able to take a break and laugh throughout the day. The benefits are immeasurable; just the act of looking at George is enough to make people relax and smile.”
cLienT - dOg reLATiOns Mike Lloyd-Owen, who runs party planning and catering company By Word Of Mouth on an industrial estate in the Wandsworth area of London, says of his office dogs Trousers and Clova: “Having Trousers is a relief. He’s always wandering about checking how things are. Clova spends more time in the car – but I leave its door open all day so she can come in when she wants to do office duties.” He often takes his dogs on visits to clients and would have no objections to more dogs being bought in by staff members. “I don’t want to sound like a nutter,” says Lloyd-Owen, “but I think the dogs understand when staff are wound up and they go over to them and say a nice soothing ‘Hello’.”
cAnine wind Jonathan Fingerhut, managing director of
Fingerhut Associates, a business strategy consultancy, is a great proponent of the benefits of office dogs and canine therapy. “The landlords at our first office had a Jack Russell. We have high profile clients and, of course, clients are always right, even when they’re patently wrong. But I soon noticed staff seeking out Jessy, to give him a biscuit, after stressful meetings.” On moving offices, Fingerhut acquired two more dogs. Vinny, a mixture of German Shepherd, Collie and Pointer; and Mungo, a little whippet cross. “Even those staff who claimed they didn’t like dogs, I
“The dogs have definitely won us jobs. And they make our jobs easier by empathising with our moods and giving unconditional love without any baggage attached”, soon found lying on the floor looking deep into Mungo’s eyes, saying ‘Oh, who needs ooooing clients anyway?’.” Even canine wind can prove beneficial, reveals Fingerhut: “Everyone would run from one end of the office to the other, going, ‘Oh, no, Vinny’s let one rip!’ and run around opening windows. But even that had an invigorating effect, because it distracted everyone briefly from their duties and got fresh air into the building.” “The dogs have definitely won us jobs. And they make our jobs easier by empathising with our moods and giving unconditional love without any baggage attached”, enthuses Fingerhut. “I often hear staff members say, ‘It wouldn’t bother you if I delivered this one minute late, would it Vinny?’.” When a supply of 300,000 torches got trapped near Hong Kong harbour during a typhoon, the client demanded that a fresh supply be made and flown over. Fingerhut’s response to www.homesguide.com.au
this business catastrophe? Adhering to his maxim of “Get an office dog, get a life!”, he simply took the dogs, a ball and his staff to the local park. A South Australian family-owned business says opening its doors to staff’s dogs has helped their owners deal with the stress of working in the disability services area. SACARE’s marketing communications manager Chloe Kempe said the sector was a “particularly emotional one and it was a release to have pets in the office”. “There are obviously studies showing pets are beneficial and we actually see that on the job,” Ms Kempe said. “We want to make sure we are a forward-thinking workplace. It’s a more broadminded way of looking at work-life balance.” The RSPCA estimates more than 60 per cent of Australian households own a pet but less than 25 per cent of employers allow pets into the workplace.
