which tomato should i plant? Growing fresh tomatoes is easy to do in any size garden. Whether you grow them in pots, a raised garden bed or your veggie patch, all you need is your favourite seedlings, wellprepared soil and a protected area with plenty of sun. But which tomato is right for you? We’ll take you through the different types of tomatoes you can grow and where they grow best. HOW DO YOUR TOMATOES GROW? Tomatoes come in all shapes, sizes and even colours, each with their own growing characteristics. Tomato plants can vary in size too, starting with the short dwarf varieties that only grow about two feet. There are also mid-sized varieties, often referred to as bushing or determinates, which produce one bulk harvest in their lifecycle. The larger, vining varieties, or indeterminates, do need more room to spread out and can produce fruit over the course of a whole season. TOMATOES TO GROW IN POTS Most of the popular tomato varieties do grow well in pots. Apart from being a good option for growing in smaller outdoor spaces, the great thing about pots is you can move them around to find the best ar , s nny position Tiny Tim The Tiny Tim variety is an easy option for beginners or kids to grow. This miniature plant is a good example of a d arfing, b sh to ato that produces a sweet, cherry sized red fruit 2cm to 3cm in diameter. Cherry Tomatoes Cherry tomatoes also grow well in pots, particularly in humid areas, and they look great cascading down from hanging baskets. You can trail cherry tomatoes along a fence or the edge of a raised garden bed. Windy Box Roma These plants are low maintenance, and typically grow around one metre high. They produce tasty pear- or plum-shaped fruits that are perfect for salads and sauces.

Patio Prize This compact bushing tomato plant grows up to 50cm tall. Growing well in full sun, with moderate watering, these are strong and vigorous tomatoes that produce high yields of medium-sized, juicy fruit around 2–4cm. TOMATOES TO GROW IN GARDEN BEDS If you plan to grow tomatoes in a veggie patch or raised garden bed, there are all sorts of interesting arieties to try repare the soil first by digging in some organic matter, and giving it a good drink with some liquid fertiliser. Also, the best way to encourage healthy fruiting in any variety is to stake the plants while they are still young. Gross Lisse One of the most popular tomato varieties to grow in Australia is the Gross Lisse. Great for staking, this trusty plant produces good yields of medium to large fruits and is able to adapt to most soil conditions. This variety produces the best fruit in a protected, warm, sunny spot with deep free-draining soil. Siberian Heirloom In colder climates, the Siberian

Heirloom tomato grows well at lower temperatures and is frost resistant. While they do need sun, the temperature doesn’t need to get much higher than a few degrees above freezing for these plants to thrive. They also grow quicker than most other varieties, producing juicy, round fruit up to 225gm in size. Truss Tomatoes Truss Tomatoes are another good option for staking in a garden bed and generally grow up to 1.8m. So called because each plant produces bunches or ‘trusses’ of tomatoes that can carry up to six medium-sized fruits. This bushing variety has a good resistance to disease and will enjoy a small amount of fertilising every few ee s once the plant starts o ering Green Zebra You could even try growing something a little more interesting like the Green Zebra. This bushy indeterminate variety produces round 5-7cm fruits with green stripes and a rich creamy texture. You will need to start growing them indoors for around six weeks, before taking them out to the garden, but their growing season is longer than most others.

butter bean dip with dukkah at bread Do chip ‘n’ dip Moroccan style with dukkah crisps and a spicy lemon-scented bean puree. INGREDIENTS • 1 x 400g can butter beans, rinsed, drained • 2 garlic cloves, peeled • 60ml (1/4 cup) fresh lemon juice • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • 1 teaspoon mild paprika • 1 x 175g pkt multigrain wraps • Olive oil spray • 2 tablespoons dukkah • Mild paprika, extra, to serve • Olive oil, extra, to serve • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh continental parsley Photography by Rob Palmer

METHOD Step 1 Place the butter beans, garlic, lemon juice, oil, cumin and paprika in the bowl of a food processor and process until smooth. Season with salt. Step 2 Preheat oven to 180°C. Place the wraps, in a single layer, on 2 large baking trays. Spray with olive oil spray. Sprinkle with the dukkah. Bake for 5-8 minutes or until crisp. Set aside to cool slightly. Break into coarse pieces. Step 3 Transfer the butter bean mixture to a serving bowl. Sprinkle with extra paprika and drizzle over extra oil. Top with the parsley. berries in syrup on yoghurt Brighten up your breakfast with this healthy yoghurt and berry combination - it tastes delicious over a healthy bowl of muesli. INGREDIENTS • 2 x 150g punnets mulberries • 1 x 150g punnet blueberries • 2 tablespoons icing sugar mixture • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice • 1 x 500g container creamy premiumblend vanilla yoghurt (Jalna brand) • Muesli, to serve, if desired

METHOD Step 1 Combine half the mulberries and blueberries with the icing sugar mixture and orange juice in a saucepan over low heat. Simmer, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until the mulberries soften. Remove from heat and set aside for 10 minutes to cool. Stir the remaining mulberries and blueberries into the mulberry syrup until combined. Step 2 Use a balloon whisk to whisk the

yoghurt in a medium bowl until smooth and creamy. Spoon the yoghurt into a 1L (4-cup) capacity rectangular glass dish and smooth the surface. Step 3 Spoon the berries in syrup over the yoghurt and swirl with the spoon. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for 1 hour to chill. mediterranean vegetable and beef burgers Full of healthy vegetable and chargrilled beef patties, this recipe serves 2 adults and 2 toddlers. INGREDIENTS • 200g chargrilled red capsicum • 2 small zucchini, thinly sliced lengthways • 2 tablespoons tomato paste • 400g lean beef mince • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh oregano leaves • 1 long red chilli, finely chopped • 1 tablespoon toasted pine nuts • olive oil cooking spray • 1 baby eggplant, thinly sliced lengthways • 4 wholemeal bread rolls, halved • 80g salad leaves • sliced tomato and barbecue sauce, to serve (toddler) • basil, cashew and pine nut chunky dip, to serve (adults)

METHOD Step 1 Finely chop half the capsicum. Finely chop one-quarter of the zucchini slices. Step 2 Combine chopped capsicum and zucchini, tomato paste, mince and oregano. Shape half the mixture into 2 patties. Add chilli and pine nuts to remaining mixture. Shape into 2 patties. Step 3 Spray a barbecue plate or chargrill with oil. Heat over medium-high heat. Grill zucchini and eggplant slices for 2 to 3 minutes each side or until tender. Transfer to a plate. Cook patties for 4 to 5 minutes on each side or until cooked through. Step 4 Top roll bases with salad leaves, spiced patties, capsicum, zucchini, eggplant, dip and roll tops. Serve. Source: www.taste.com.au

italian meatballs with cherry tomato sauce This healthy version of the classic Italian favourite is sure to keep the kids smiling. INGREDIENTS • 1 small zucchini, grated • 1 small carrot, grated • 400g extra lean beef mince • 1 small brown onion, grated • 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh basil leaves • 1/2 cup fresh wholemeal breadcrumbs • 1 egg • 4 garlic cloves, crushed • 250g dried wholemeal spaghetti • 2 teaspoons olive oil • 2 x 250g punnets cherry tomatoes, halved • Fresh basil leaves and grated parmesan, to serve METHOD Step 1 Squeeze excess liquid from zucchini and carrot. Place in a large bowl. Add mince, onion, basil, breadcrumbs, egg, and half the garlic. Season with salt and

pepper. Mix well. Roll level tablespoons of mixture into balls. Place on a large plate. Step 2 Cook spaghetti in a large saucepan of boiling water, following packet directions, until tender. Drain. Step 3 Meanwhile, heat oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook meatballs, in batches, turning regularly, for 5 minutes or until browned. Transfer to a large plate. Step 4 Add remaining garlic to pan. Cook, stirring, for 30 seconds or until fragrant. Add tomatoes. Season with pepper. Cook, stirring, for 3 minutes or until tomatoes collapse. Step 5 Add meatballs. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes or until cooked through. Serve meatballs on spaghetti topped with basil and parmesan. Source: www.taste.com.au
