how to prepare walls for painting Painting your walls can bring new life to a room. Just as important as choosing the right colour is preparing the walls. We’ll show you a quick way to clean and prepare your walls so that the paint goes on easier and the finished ob loo s better. Step 1. Clean your walls with sugar soap Making sure your walls are properly clean will help the paint to stick better. A clean surface also stops stains and marks showing through the new paint. For a good clean you need to use sugar soap. Mix up the sugar soap in a bucket of water according to the instructions on the bottle. Put on your gloves and thoroughly wash the walls using the sugar soap mixture. Once you’ve cleaned the wall, dry the sugar soap off using a rag. Step 2. Scrape cracked paint off the walls After your walls have been cleaned and are dry, put on your safety glasses and dust mask and lay down a drop sheet near the wall. Use a paint scraper to remove any fla y and crac ed paint from the wall. se the ladder to reach spots higher up on the wall.

Step 3. Apply gap filler to any cracks ix the powdered gap filler in a buc et with some water until it is the consistency of toothpaste. Using your paint scraper, apply it to all of the cracks and chips on the wall, ma ing sure to overfill them. hen your gap filler is dry, use sandpaper on a hand sander for a smooth finish. Step 4. Seal the gaps in the corners se a multi-purpose gap sealer and a caul ing gun to fill the gaps in the corners of the walls. After applying the gap sealer, use a damp cloth to wipe off any excess. his will also ma e it smooth and push the filler it into the corners. ou may need a second layer of gap filler to finish off. Now your walls are now ready to paint.

fruit balloon An inspired approach to kids’ party food with fresh fruit presented in a gorgeous balloon shape. EQUIPMENT • 100 toothpicks, a small snap-lock bag INGREDIENTS • 1/2 (2.5kg) small watermelon (see notes) • 1/2 (1.25kg) small honeydew melon, peeled, cut into 3cm pieces • 1 small pineapple, peeled, cut into 3cm pieces • 500g strawberries, hulled • 1 tablespoon ready-made vanilla frosting (see notes) • 13 red grapes

METHOD Step 1 Using a sharp knife and keeping the rind intact, remove flesh from watermelon. Cut a 7cm wedge for the balloon tie. Cut the remaining flesh into 3cm to 4cm pieces.

Step 2 Place the watermelon shell, cutside down, on a large platter. Push 1 toothpick into the base of each piece of watermelon, honeydew, pineapple and each strawberry. Using picture as a guide, and starting with the strawberries, insert toothpicks, about 3cm apart, into watermelon rind to secure, so the whole surface of the watermelon shell is covered. Step 3 Place watermelon wedge at the base of the ‘balloon’ to form the balloon tie. Step 4 Spoon frosting into a small snaplock bag. Snip off 1 corner and pipe a thin line of frosting onto the platter to form the ‘string’. Gently press grapes, end to end, into the frosting to secure. Serve. Source: www.taste.com.au

fruit tarts Create these sweet treats in a few minutes - with a fresh fruit topping, they are simply irresistible. INGREDIENTS • 6 slices raisin bread • olive oil spray • 2 x 125g ctns Vanilla Creme Fruche • kiwifruit, banana, strawberries, and blueberries to serve.

METHOD Step 1 Preheat oven to 180°C. Use a serrated knife to remove the crusts from raisin bread. Use a rolling pin to roll the bread firmly to flatten. Spray six 80ml (1/3cup) capacity muffin pans with olive oil spray to lightly grease. Press the bread slices into the prepared pans. Spray with olive oil spray. Bake in oven for 8 minutes or until light golden. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Spoon Vanilla Creme Fruche among the tart cases. Top with sliced kiwifruit, sliced banana, sliced strawberries and blueberries to serve. Source: www.taste.com.au
