aspiring writers wanted for scwc young writers group When: Monthly, beginning 21 July Where: UOW, Building 19, Room G020 The South Coast Writers Centre will run a 10-week session of workshops with the SCWC Young Writers Group, which will commence on the 21st of July, and the centre is looking for expressions of interest from Illawarra teenagers aged between 12 and 18 years. The ten workshops will run fortnightly during School Term time and will cost $85 for members, and $110 for non-members. The workshops will be held at the SCWC, Building 19 at the University of Wollongong. Bookings are essential as places are limited and close Tuesday 19 July, however individual sessions are $15 per week and can be accepted after the workshops commence. hearty beef pasta This hearty beef dinner will warm up the family this winter. INGREDIENTS • 400g linguine or fettucine pasta • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 300g round beef steak • 1 red onion, sliced • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 1 long red chilli, deseeded, finely chopped • 400g can tomatoes • 150g baby spinach leaves

METHOD Step 1 Cook pasta in a large saucepan of boiling salted water, following packet directions, until tender. Step 2 Meanwhile, heat 2 teaspoons oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Add beef and cook for 3 minutes each side or until browned. Transfer to a plate. Cover with foil and

stand for 5 minutes. Thinly slice beef across the grain. Set aside. Step 3 Reduce heat to medium. Add remaining oil and onion. Cook, stirring, for 1 to 2 minutes or until soft. Add garlic and chilli and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Stir in tomatoes, bring to a simmer and cook for 4 minutes or until thickened slightly. Step 4 Drain pasta and return to pan. Add spinach, beef and tomato mixture to pasta. Toss gently over low heat to combine. Season with salt and pepper. Spoon into serving bowls and serve. Source: www.taste.com.au

chilli prawn pasta Make it easy on yourself with this six-ingredient pasta main in under 30 minutes! INGREDIENTS • 375g dried spaghetti pasta • 1/3 cup olive oil • 1/2 small red onion, finely chopped • 1 long red chilli, finely chopped • 1/4 cup finely shredded fresh basil leaves • 400g (24) cooked small prawns, peeled, deveined, tails intact

METHOD Step 1 Cook pasta in a saucepan of boiling, salted water, following packet directions, until tender. Drain, reserving 1/4 cup cooking liquid. Step 2 Return pasta to pan. how to install a rotary clothesline Find out how to install a clothesline properly so that stands strong and straight in the ground. We’ll show you how to concrete the pole into the ground. And a simple way to keep the pole straight while the concrete dries. STEP 1. DIG A HOLE FOR THE ROTARY CLOTHESLINE Choose a spot to install your clothesline. You’ll need an area with at least a six-metre diameter. Then dig a hole in the centre for the pole. Your instructions will tell you how deep it needs to be – in our case it is 250mm wide and 650mm deep. STEP 2. SET THE LEVEL OF THE SLEEVE FOR THE ROTARY CLOTHESLINE IN THE GROUND Fill the bottom of the hole with approx. 200mm of builders screenings. Then push the pole sleeve about 100mm into the screenings. Make sure that the top of the sleeve is at ground level. In our case, it is sitting a little low, so we add a bit more screening to top up the hole. Once the sleeve is in place, tip in a few more handfuls of screening for extra support. STEP 3. HAMMER PICKETS INTO THE GROUND TO SUPPORT THE ROTARY CLOTHESLINE POLE Starting a metre out from the hole, hammer in three star pickets about

300mm the ground, equal distances apart. These will help support the clothesline post while the concrete sets. When you hammer them in, angle them away from the hole to give them added strength. STEP 4. INSTALL AND STRAIGHTEN THE POLE FOR THE ROTARY CLOTHESLINE Remove the cap from the sleeve and slide the pole in. Then tie ropes around the middle of the pole and loosely secure them to the three star pickets. Now adjust and tighten the ropes using your spirit level to make sure the pole stands perfectly straight. STEP 5. CONCRETE THE POLE FOR THE ROTARY CLOTHESLINE Wet down the hole with a hose.
