how to install and maintain gutters

Inspection and maintenance may prevent most serious gutter problems. Remove leaves and other debris with a whisk broom that fits inside the gutter and a garden hose to wash away the small pieces. If downpipes need cleaning, use the garden hose, threading it down the pipe with the water and nozzle turned on full blast. GENERAL MAINTENANCE Whether you are installing new gutters and downpipes or replacing sections or parts of an existing system, you’ll find the project fairly easy to do with normal tools. Existing gutter and downpipe shapes can usually be matched from stock. If however, you have an unusual profile, this may require special manufacture. If this is not practical, replace sections in complete runs with a pattern that closely matches the existing. NEW GUTTERS OR REPLACEMENTS Whether you are installing new gutters

and downpipes or replacing sections or parts of an existing system, you’ll find the project fairly easy to do with normal tools. Existing gutter and downpipe shapes can usually be matched from stock. If however, you have an unusual profile, this may require special manufacture. If this is not practical, replace sections in complete runs with a pattern that closely matches the existing. MEASUREMENTS To calculate how many lengths and accessories you need for a project, simply measure along the fascia of

the house - from corner to corner. Note where the gutter makes inside and outside turns, where downpipes are located (and length), and how many end caps are needed for the project. You can determine from these measurements and component show many hangers, connectors, downpipes, etc., you have to buy. It’s a good idea to make a sketch of the system on paper, noting the distances, corners and so on. When you’re finished you have an “automatic” shopping list.

choosing the right heater As we move towards colder weather, it’s worth thinking about the best heater options for your family and home. Choosing the right heater will make your winter a lot more comfortable and even save you money on your heating bills. First, choose a heater that suits the size of your room. You don’t want to over or underheat it. Also consider the energy efficiency of the heater, and carefully consider the price. Inexpensive heaters can be less efficient and so more expensive in the long run.

ELECTRIC HEATERS These include radiant, fan, convection and oilfilled column heaters. They’re relatively cheap to buy but can be expensive to run. Electric heaters work most effectively in small rooms for a short period of time. If you plan to leave an electric heater on overnight, like in a bedroom, oil-filled column heaters are a safer option, but choose one with a timer so it doesn’t run all night. AIR CONDITIONERS Reverse cycle air conditioners are one of the most efficient ways to heat your home. They can be used to warm a small room, a large living area or a whole home, and generally come with a programmable thermostat and timer. While the upfront cost for an air conditioner may be high, hourly running costs are a third of the price of running an oil-filled column heater or electric fan

heater, and less than a quarter of the cost of running a radiant electric heater. They’re energy star rated, so it’s easy to choose an efficient model. GAS HEATERS These include unflued radiant and convection heaters and flued convection and ducted heating. Despite initially costing more, gas heaters produce about one-third of the greenhouse gas emissions of portable electric heaters and their running costs save you money in the long run. Unflued gas heaters are less expensive than flued gas heaters but they need room ventilation and can’t be used in bedrooms or bathrooms. WOOD HEATERS Wood heaters look great with slow combustion fires that are up to six times more efficient than an open fireplace;

where up to 90 per cent of the heat escapes out of the chimney. Slow combustion fires are safer and produce much less air pollution than open fires and can be used to heat large living areas. KEEPING THE HEAT IN Once you’ve decided on the best heating system for your home there are some simple things you can do to maximise their efficiency and save you money. • Close blinds and curtains so that heat doesn’t escape through the windows • Draught-proof under doors and around windows • Close doors leading to rooms that you don’t need to heat • Ceiling insulation can reduce average heating costs by up to a quarter • Put a timer on your heaters so they automatically turn on and off • Run slow moving ceiling fans in reverse to push the warm air down

get on the property ladder Potential new home buyers can be put off by the idea of having to save for a deposit or being tied down by long term debt. Buying a house doesn’t have to be a daunting experience. Sometimes you just need a boost to get started.

G

et into the property market early. The earlier you get into the market, the more time you have to take advantage of any potential for capital growth before life changes and you want something bigger. The first home you own, need not be your dream home. However, it may be an important first step to your dream hone such as a humble one bedroom apartment in a high growth area. Buy a property with a friend or family member. Sharing ownership and the

mortgage commitment could reduce your amount of debt and increase your purchasing power. Together you could double the income and double the deposit to draw upon. Over time, if the value of this property increases, you could sell it and use your share of the equity after the loan is repaid as a deposit when purchasing your own property. Get help from your parents. Consider living at home while you save a deposit or build equity in an investment property. In some cases, parents may be able to provide a guarantee allowing you to borrow with little or even no deposit. Rent and invest. It’s hard to know exactly where we want to live and circumstances can change quickly. You may want a chic inner-city apartment now but what about when you start a family? Then, you may need something bigger with a yard for the children to play and perhaps room for a family pet. Renting a property in the suburb where you think you want to buy lets you try it out first. At

www.homesguide.com.au

the same time, you could consider buying an investment property in a growth area. Renting may cost less, providing extra cash flow to save for a bigger deposit on your dream home. Once you’ve made the decision to buy, take the time to research the Government Assistance available, such as the Commonwealth First Home Owners Grant. This can make a big difference to first home buyers. Remember to also research the qualifying criteria. For example, if the first property you buy is an investment property, you will not be eligible for first home owner’s grants and other concessions. Everyone’s circumstances are different and, of course, you need to decide which home loan is right for you. At RAMS we treat everyone as an individual. top tips to plan your dream home B

uilding or renovating your dream home is one of the biggest investments you will ever make. With so much at stake, knowing what precautions to take might just stop your dream becoming a nightmare. The Home Building Act 1989 protects homeowners from risks associated with building or renovating, while also setting standards and maintaining the standard of competence for builders and tradespeople working in the industry. NSW Fair Trading regulates the home building industry and can provide you with information and assistance to help make your build a positive experience.

12

homesguideliving

Here’s a checklist of things you need to ask yourself before you build or renovate: • Have you got at least three quotes from tradespeople? • Does your chosen builder hold a current licence for the work they are being contracted to do? You can do a free home building licence check with Fair Trading online or by calling 13 32 20. • Who will manage the building process? Will you be an owner builder or will your builder manage the work? • What council approvals do you need? • Do you need a Building Sustain-

• • •

ability Index Certificate (BASIX)? What contracts and deposits are required? What insurances do you need? Do you know what to do if things go wrong?

Doing your research is one of the most important things you need to do when planning to build or renovate. It will help guide you to make informed decisions, to know what to expect from the process and to understand your rights and obligations so the project is completed on time and on budget. For more information about renovating visit the Fair Trading website.

check your tradie The golden rule of building or renovating your home is “always check your builder or tradesperson holds the right licence for the job”. Licensing protects you because: • You deal with a legitimate business • The tradesperson has the right qualifications for the job • You enjoy better consumer protection • You help to keep the shonks out. Recent NSW Fair Trading research into licensing revealed consumers are at risk because they do not actively check a tradesperson is licensed before they hire. The research, conducted in 2013, shows

that 80% of home owners think licensing is important, but only one in ten check if a tradesperson is licensed. Did you know it takes just minutes to do a free licence check with NSW Fair Trading? It’s a must before hiring a builder or tradesperson and signing a contract for residential home building work. In NSW, a tradesperson must be licensed to do home building work over $1,000. Any person who carries out residential building work without an appropriate licence is breaking the law. In addition, a tradesperson must also be licensed to carry out any electrical, plumbing, gas fitting, refrigeration and air conditioning work regardless of the price. www.homesguide.com.au

Unlicensed work leaves you without proper protection if things go wrong. For example; Fair Trading can’t negotiate on your behalf and the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal may not be able to make an order for rectification because the trader is unlicensed. It’s illegal to provide unlicensed building work. Only a builder or tradesperson who is qualified and has the relevant experience can be licensed with NSW Fair Trading. To do a free home building licence check or for more information, go to the Fair Trading website at www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au or call 13 32 20.

market your personal brand without facebook Facebook is a fantastic platform for sharing your brand message but it’s not the only one out there. Move out of your comfort zone and share your brand – you never know who you might meet.

14

Your mother was right when she told you not to put all your eggs in one basket. What would happen to your business if Facebook closed down tomorrow? Would your personal brand disappear with it? Your personal brand is “selfexpression amplified to influence and command attention”. Yes, Facebook is one distribution channel for you to communicate your brand. But what about others? Share yourself around. (Something I’m sure your mother told you not to do!) Take advantage of the channels out there and make them work for you by taking your message further than Facebook alone could ever do. Here are 20 non-Facebook ways to market your personal brand and message. Appearance: Whether you like it or not, you are being judged. Your wardrobe, hair, and makeup are on show, so make sure they are sending the right message. You are your brand. Photographs: Think of yourself as a media personality and invest in a set of professional photos for your marketing needs. Your brand should never be represented by a happy snap taken by your 10 year old kid with an Iphone. Website: Your website should be www.homesguide.com.au

streamlined, professional and up to date. Outdated or messy sites suggest that you are outdated and messy, too. Your home page should only have one core call to action… and that should be to opt-in to find out more, get a free report or guide. As soon as you visit your site, your eyes should be drawn to this call to action IMMEDIATELY. Blog posts: Write and post at least one blog post a week to keep content fresh and relevant. These posts should up-sell into your various product and service offerings and build the need to engage you further. Twitter: Perfect your tweets and hashtags on a daily basis. Keep the conversation focused and alive. Automate what you can and then engage with others proactively as they engage with you and vice versa. YouTube: Record video segments and promote them online to maximise your views. Educate, inform and excite people with your content. Promote your video via email, Facebook, Youtube sponsored posts and Twitter. Don’t let it sit there whatever you do. Tell the world about it. Newspaper: Contact your local newspaper for editorials or offer to write regular feature articles relevant to the

newspapers readership base. LinkedIn: Connect with influential contacts and stay up to date with what is going on in your industry. Contribute to the discussion. Write A Book (again!): Whether you opt for a paperback or E-book version, a book is a great way to promote your personal brand. Choose subject matter worthy of your name and understand what it TRULY takes to promote it and make money. Radio: Call in to talk radio shows and express your opinion whether it is popular or not. Try to arrange radio interviews to tie in with other promotions happening around you. TV: Contact national television shows for interviews and guest appearances. The media often seek people to comment so keep an eye on sites like SourceBottle and HARO. Webcasts or Podcasts: Create video or audio presentations and stream them online to engage your audience. Seminars or Public Speaking: You are an expert in your field so develop a range of topics that you’re comfortable speaking on and approach event organisers with an offer to speak. Online Articles: Write, write, write! Place your articles online and on your

top industry blogs to be noticed. Magazines: Whether a one-off feature or a regular column, writing for a professional magazine is a great way to have your brand noticed. Referrals: Ask the fans you have to spread the word for you. If they love your brand and what you do, they will be happy to refer people to you. Word of mouth is powerful. Sponsorships or Community Events: Connect with your local community through sponsorship of a sporting, fundraising or other local event. Charity Work: Source a worthwhile charity, one that you truly believe in, to promote and assist wherever and whenever you can. Networking events: Make sure you are being seen in all the right places and by all the right people. Make authentic connections that will last you for years. Workshops: Attend or lead workshops so you can share your knowledge and show off your brand by demonstrating your expertise and skills in a live environment. OK, now we have identified new marketing methods but before you swing into action, make sure you have clarified your core message. You won’t leverage the power of these platforms unless your www.homesguide.com.au

message is consistent and in line with your brand. Think about the message from your audience’s perspective; what are you trying to get across to them? Is your personal brand aspirational, informational or purely self-focussed? The answer will give you a better idea about what methods might bring you the best response. Facebook is a fantastic platform for sharing your brand message but it’s not the only one out there. Move out of your comfort zone and share your brand – you never know who you might meet. And, if you’re ready to establish your ascension marketing model quickly, profit immediately from national media coverage, build a profitable personal brand and bring in new clients right away, click here to read about my ‘30 Day Business Turnaround’ Program. With campaigns that are easy to execute... and instantly actionable without a lot of work, your daily activity strategy will get you immediate results within just a few days. council watch News and updates by the hills shire council MAYOR OPENS NEW VINNIES FACILITY TO KICK OFF RESPONSIBLE GAMBLING AWARENESS WEEK

NOMINATE BUSINESSES THAT ARE ABOUT MORE THAN THE BOTTOM LINE Hills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne is calling on the public to let Council know of the businesses that are about more than the bottom line. The first ever Sydney Hills Business Awards for Community Contribution will recognise local businesses that have shown great support for community groups, events, services and organisations. The awards are an initiative of local businessman Adjunct Professor Jim Taggart and Baulkham Hills State MP David Elliott in an effort to formally recognise businesses that make the community a more enjoyable place. Hills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne has given her full support to the idea and is asking members of the community to join in and nominate businesses for their efforts. “The business people I’ve met are about more than the bottom line – they look out for their community,” Mayor Byrne said. Mayor Byrne said that we all benefit from local business sponsorships and donations and it was time we thanked them for their continued support. 22

“It may have been in the form of a donation of goods, contribution of skills, sponsorship of a team, or even just a helping hand. In some way, local businesses have helped us all.” “We want to reward that kind of generosity, and that’s why we have launched the Sydney Hills Business Awards for Community Contribution.” “So if you know a local business that deserves to be recognised for the good work they do in our community, I want you to grab a form, fill it in and nominate them now,” Dr Byrne said. Professor Taggart said that many local businesses supported the community selflessly. “These businesses are out there doing their best to help people and the community as a whole. I think that’s something that is well worth recognising and well worth shouting about,” Professor Taggart said. “Every local sports club, charity or community organisation has received some assistance, whether it be financial or in other resources, from a local business.” “Let’s give them the pat on the back that they well and truly deserve.” Nomination forms are available online via the Council’s website, www.thehills. nsw.gov.au. www.homesguide.com.au

The opening of a new St Vincent de Paul facility on Old Northern Rd, Baulkham Hills has been welcomed by Hills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne. The new Vinnies facility will specifically target the rise of problem gambling throughout the Sydney Hills and Hawkesbury regions. Mayor Byrne, a passionate mental health advocate, said that problem gambling was an issue that could not be ignored. “Unfortunately, problem gambling is an issue we will continue to hear more about over the coming years,” Mayor Byrne said. “With the advent of online gambling, the spread of pokies and betting odds being broadcast on every televised sporting event – it’s no wonder this problem continues to grow.” “We could do nothing and let the problem grow into an epidemic, or we could try and stop the problem spiralling out of control.” “That’s why I applaud St Vincent de Paul – who will target problem gambling in the Sydney Hills and Hawkesbury regions.” Mayor Byrne said the opening of the new premises was timely with Responsible Gambling Awareness Week highlighting the growing issue. “This is Australia - no one is saying that you can’t have a punt,” Mayor Byrne said. “But like everything in life, it’s about doing it in moderation. We don’t want to tell people what to do – we just want people to be able to enjoy themselves without having too big an impact on themselves or their family.” The new facility is located at Level 1, Suite 15, 35 Old Northern Road, Baulkham Hills.

science-backed methods to loose weight GET THE BLUES got the blues” may conjure up memories of those macaroni and cheese commercials from the ‘90s, but we’re talking about blue dishware. The colour blue can act as an appetite suppressant because it has the least appealing contrast to most food. Research says to avoid plates that match the food served on them (like white plates and fettuccine Alfredo), because there is less of a contrast, which may prompt us to eat more. A small but potentially useful trick!

STOCK THE FRIDGE ake an effort to fill the fridge with healthy produce and proteins (from perusing the perimeter!). Keep lots of fresh fruit and veggies on hand. And for when the fruit basket goes barren, make sure the freezer is stocked with frozen veggie mixes or berries (grab the bags full of just veggies, not the ones with butter-laden sauces). You may be less apt to order out when you’ve got the makings of a healthy dinner right at home. And the good news is, healthy food doesn’t always have to be pricey.

PERUSE THE PERIMETER ext time you need groceries, circle the perimeter of the store before going in. This isn’t a way to stalk out your prey, but actually a tactic to load up on the healthy stuff first. The edges of grocery stores generally house fresh produce, meat, and fish, while the inner aisles hold more prepackaged, processed foods. Browsing the perimeter can help control how many unwanted additives are in the grocery basket.

EAT IN THE A.M. kipping breakfast in order to “save your appetite” for dinner probably isn’t a safety shield for late-night noshing. While there’s still debate on how important breakfast really is, not eating until the afternoon may lead to over-eating later on (ie. four servings of mashed potatoes) . Make sure to stick to a reasonably sized breakfast with plenty of protein; we tend to eat the same sized lunch and dinner regardless of how many calories we eat in the morning.

MAKE SUBS o, we don’t mean the sandwich. We mean easy recipe substitutions. Simple swaps — like Greek yogurt for sour cream, prunes for butter, or an Americano for a latte — can cut calories and sugar. Even a grilled cheese can get a healthy revamp by making a few smart subs.

N

COOK SMART ven healthy food can become not so great when it’s been dropped into a fryer. Instead, pan fry or pop a dish in the oven. Use non-stick spray to sauté foods, or rub oil onto a pan with a paper towel for a light coating. You can even whip up a batch of healthier chips.

E

HEAT IT UP WITH CAYENNE ayenne pepper, the bright red spice, can not only boost metabolism, but can also cut cravings for fatty, sweet, or salty foods. with a little hot sauce. Pack the Protein. Protein can help promote a healthy weight because high protein diets are associated with greater satiety, plus it’s important for healthy muscle growth. Animal sources aren’t the only option — try alternatives like quinoa, tempeh, and lentils. FILL UP ON FIBER ating more vegetables and other high-fiber items like legumes can help keep us fuller, longer. Look for at least five grams or more of the stuff per serving. Snack on some of our favourite high-fiber picks like stuffed baked apples or jazzed up oats.

E

MAKE ROOM FOR (HEALTHY) FATS utting butter and oil can slash calories, and it’s easy to swap in foods like apple sauce, avocado, banana, or flax for baking. But, it’s important to remember that we still need fat in our diets as a source of energy and to absorb the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. Plus it helps us feel full. Get healthy mono-unsaturated and polyunsaturated fats from avocadoes, olive oil, nuts, coconuts, seeds, and fish. Bonus tip: Combining fat with fiber has been shown to increase fat’s power to make us feel full.

C

messages like “I can control my eating” or “I’m proud that I ate responsibly today” can re-frame our relationship with food. Research shows that positive expectations are also associated with weight loss. ADD, DON’T SUBTRACT nstead of fixating on cutting out cookies, cake, pizza, and all that heavy cream in your morning coffee, focus instead on adding healthy foods to your menu. Ditching all the “bad” stuff can be a daunting task, one that’s easier to stick to by focusing on one habit at a time (science says it takes anywhere from 18-254 days to form a habit). Add in as many healthy habits as you’d like — drink more water, stock up on fresh fruits and veggies — and slowly wean off of the not-so-good-for-you goodies.

I

ONE NABIT AT A TIME here’s an idea that focusing on less helps us achieve more. Changing a habit is tough, but trying to tackle a whole handful may seem impossible. Instead, concentrate on changing one

T

behaviour at a time. Start small and make clear guidelines for a set habit. For example, if you’d like to increase veggie intake, decide to eat three different vegetables each day, or 1 cup with each meal. And remember, small changes can lead to gradual weight loss. ENVISION THE GOAL ime spent visualizing what you would look and feel like with a few less kilos, can help acknowledge the health and fitness changes necessary for successful weight loss. Research suggests that imagining achieving an exercise goal — like running 5k, or increasing weights for your next workout — can actually enhance performance.

T

THINK BIG PICTURE o you’ve “banned” chocolate cake, but decided to go for just a small taste. Instead you polished off a full slice. It’s so easy to go totally overboard on an old habit. Instead of blowing it if you’ve slipped up on a new goal, think of the big picture. Focus on the change rather than what’s being eliminated (either a “bad” food, or a bad habit). Live in the moment to successfully make new healthy habits.

S

THINK ON IT ow satiated we feel a few hours after we eat depends not on how much we actually scarfed down but on how much we think we ate. It pays to pay attention to what we eat... it’s actually okay to eat with our eyes.

H

SET REALISTIC GOALS t’s easy, especially come New Year’s resolution season, to set some pretty unrealistic goals about weight loss (fit into skinny jeans in three days!). Since impractical goals can slow down longterm weight-loss, it’s important to address those goals before making any health and fitness changes.

I

SLEEP SMART leep can not only reduce stress, help us heal faster, and prevent depression, it can also help shave off some kilos because sleep loss is linked to changes in appetite and the metabolism of glucose (sugar in the blood). Moral of the story: Sleep is associated with less weight gain. Take a look at our guide to sleep positions to optimize those hours spent tucked under the sheets. And try other solutions for extra Zzs like turning off electronics in the bedroom and avoiding large meals late at night. Source: greatist.com

S

PORTION PATROL racticing portion control is one of the easiest, most reliable ways to lose weight, but it’s not an easy task. Portion distortion is ever present, but it may help to use portion visuals, for instance — a serving of chicken (200 grams) is roughly the size of a deck of cards.

either wouldn’t visit a GP for a flu shot, or “would have to think about it”, despite being at risk. “Influenza is highly contagious [and] can affect the fit and healthy,” ISG chairman Dr Alan Hampson says. “However, there’s a belief among adult Australians that they’re at low risk and don’t require vaccination.” The survey revealed that while 95 per cent of that age group had felt flu-like symptoms, more than half hadn’t had a flu shot and most didn’t know the vaccine changes every year. The virus has a high mutation rate so new strains are constantly being created. The current vaccine protects against all three of this year’s likely strains and is 60-70 per cent effective. Professor Robert Booy, head of Clinical Research at the National Centre for Immunisation Research & Surveillance, says that vaccination offers the best chance for getting through winter unscathed.

severe flu season is predicted, yet many adults aren’t willing to protect themselves. Here’s why it won’t just be colds causing concern this winter. Doctors are bracing themselves for a potential serious flu outbreak, and with up to 2500 influenza-related deaths a year in Australia – higher than the death toll from our roads – the risks aren’t to be sniffed at. Experts predict three strains of flu will hit all age groups. These include the swine flu or H1N1 strain that caused a pandemic in

30

2009, the H3N2 flu (which first appeared in 1968 in Hong Kong) and influenza B strains. It’s still autumn, yet a higher than usual 3488 diagnosed flu cases have been reported. ADULTS IGNORANT OF RISKS A survey by the Influenza Specialist Group (ISG) found that young to middle-aged adults are flouting warnings by choosing not to be vaccinated. More than 60 per cent of Aussies aged 35 to 49 said they www.homesguide.com.au

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF The flu typically strikes between late autumn and early spring. Symptoms include muscle and joint ache, a high fever, dry cough, sore throat, headache and feeling generally unwell. A common myth is that being healthy and active offers some protection against the flu but the illness infects indiscriminately. Professor Booy says that Australians lack awareness about how to outsmart the flu. “We’re talking about potentially lifethreatening complications and 13,500 hospitalisations from the flu each year, [so] understanding how to protect yourself should be resonating far more strongly.” He adds that as well as being vaccinated, people need to understand the importance of good hygiene in protecting against flu. This includes regular handwashing, staying home if ill, using tissues when sneezing or coughing and discarding them immediately. Source: Katrina Creer, body+soul

at a vitamin rich diet and you might make it through winter without so much as a sniffle.

If you are one of the many currently battling the sniffles, it could be time to make sure your diet is not leaving you vulnerable to nasty bugs. While there is no strong evidence that links one particular food to cough and cold prevention, there are a number of foods that are crucial for optimal immune system functioning. If you think vitamin C when you think colds and flu, think again. While an optimal intake of vitamin C is important for immune functioning, so too is zinc. Few people have a low intake of vitamin C, but many more have a low intake of zinc, particularly women and children. Zinc is found predominantly in lean red meat and seafood, and in smaller amounts in wholegrain bread, nuts and fortified breakfast cereals. Zinc is involved in the development and functioning of the body’s infection-fighting white blood cells. Adults need eight to 12 milligrams of zinc a day, half of which is found in a palm-sized

piece of lean red meat, and almost all in a single oyster. Once your zinc is taken care of, then you can concentrate on your fresh fruit and vegetables, which are rich sources of a number of powerful antioxidants, including vitamin C, that help to protect the body’s cells against damage and infection. Keep in mind that the brighter the vegetables and fruits are, the better they are likely to be for you. Beetroot, sweet potato, broccoli, oranges, red capsicum and pumpkin are all chock-full of nutrition and can either be juiced, thrown into stirfries, or baked and served with warming casseroles and soups. Finally, don’t forget to keep your fluid intake up. Dehydration can not only make cough and flu symptoms much worse, but it is not good for your digestion in general. If you find that you are drinking much less water in winter, switch to green tea, which is packed with antioxidants and has also been shown to increase metabolic rate if three or more cups are consumed every day. Warm water served with a slice of lemon is also a great fluid choice.

10 exercises the

best trainers avoid 1. BEHIND-THE-NECK PULLDOWNS This one lands on nearly every “don’t do” list, but it’s an especially important exercise to avoid as you age, says Irv Rubenstein, Ph.D., exercise physiologist and founder of STEPS Fitness in Nashville, Tennessee. Pulling a bar down behind your neck causes excessive shoulder rotation. The move is hard on your shoulders in general, but it’s especially dangerous over age 40 and even more so after 60, when rotator cuff problems often lie beneath the surface waiting to emerge, says Rubenstein. “Instead do pulldowns to the front, stopping at your upper sternum (below your collarbone).” 2. MILITARY BARBELL PRESSES Pushing a bar up by rotating your shoulders and lifting it behind your neck tweaks your shoulder joint similarly to behind-the-neck pulldowns. But it’s even worse, says exercise physiologist Irv Rubenstein, because the rotator cuff and shoulder is now loaded with weight, which puts more pressure on the poorly positioned joint. Instead, use dumbbells or a bar in front of your 32

www.homesguide.com.au

body, pushing off from the level of the collarbone in front of the shoulders. 3. STIFF-LEG DEADLIFTS Exercise physiologist Irv Rubenstein also skips stiff-leg deadlifts, in which you bend forward at the hips while holding a barbell or dumbbells. Locked-out knees while bending forward with a heavy weight creates elevated stress on the spine, says Rubenstein. “Furthermore, when the hips flex to whatever angle the hamstrings allow, the spine will start to flex if you try to go further, which could lead to a number of spine and disk problems.” Instead, Rubenstein does a Romanian deadlift, which allows greater hip flexion before the spine is compromised. 4. WEIGHTED TORSO TWISTS Miami fitness pro Jessica Smith, star of the DVD “Walk On: Strength & Balance,” swears off weighted torso twists. “You can do these via a machine at the gym or using a barbell over the shoulders,” says Smith, “but any way you try them, adding that much extra weight to the spine during a rotational movement is terribly

unsafe.” Instead, work the obliques with crossover crunches or side crunches. 5. SQUATS ON A BOSU Sports performance specialist and kinesiologist Paul Juris, Ed.D., executive director of the Cybex Research Institute, says he’d never squat on a BOSU. If you are not familiar with the device, it is an inflated hemisphere attached to a solid (usually plastic) platform. For one, research shows squatting on unstable surfaces such as a BOSU decreases force output and therefore does not allow for maximum strength gains. “We often witness almost uncontrolled shaking when watching people perform this task,” says Juris. “This is frequently attributed to muscle imbalances or even a lack of core strength. In reality, it is neither.” The exercise creates a conflicting state. “Muscles responsible for controlling the movement work, while those that don’t contribute to the execution of smooth and fluid movement will either work at significantly lower levels or not at all,” says Juris. Keep squats on stable ground to avoid the confusion.

gyms.” The goal of skullcrushers is to increase the size and strength of the triceps muscle group, but the exercise can cause a ton of stress on your elbow.” Stick with triceps pushdowns or other, lower-risk triceps moves. 8. 45-DEGREE LEG PRESS Pressing out with your legs against a heavy object while in a seated position can compromise the health and overall compression of your spine, says Walker. “Many experts believe this exercise creates an unnatural stress on the lower back. I’d avoid it.” Walker recommends sticking with proven lower-body builders like squats. “Ditch the machines and let the free weights do the work,” he says. 9. LEG RAISES FOR LOWER ABS Doing leg raises -- lying on your back with straight legs and raising them up and down six inches -- is a dangerous way to work your lower abs, warns Connecticut exercise physiologist Tom Holland, M.S., CSCS. “The torque on the lower back is insane.”

mat and bend your legs at a 90-degree angle (shins are parallel to the floor). Engage your abs as you stretch your legs out a few inches and pull back in, recommends Holland. 10. PULLUPS Although pullups are known as a great total-upper-body exercise, people tend to strain their necks or backs too much trying to get over the bar, says Olympic medalist and pro soccer player Lauren Sesselmann, star of the “Fit As A Pro” DVDs. Sometimes pullups can cause you to work the muscles unevenly because one arm may be stronger than the other, she says. “So that arm is pulling more than the other and you can injure yourself.” Sesselmann recommends doing them on an assisted machine (such as a Gravitron) or sticking with some of the many other safer exercises you can do for your shoulders, triceps and biceps.

6. LIFTING HEAVY WEIGHTS While Lying on a Fitness Ball Using a fitness ball as a bench for a heavy lift isn’t something you’ll catch Jamie Walker doing. The NASM and Yoga Alliance certified instructor cites too high of an injury risk. “People in favor of lifting on stability balls say that the uneven balance helps build strength in your stabilizer muscles and further enhances your lift,” says Walker. “In reality, however, you’re much more likely to injure yourself while lifting on a stability ball. One quick spill and you could be out of th e gym for months.” Stick with a flat or incline weight bench and leave fitness balls for other exercises. 7. Skullcrushers The name makes this triceps move sound more dangerous than it is, but lowering and raising a bar over your head while lying on your back could cause unnecessary stress and inflammation in the elbow joint, says Walker. “I stay away from these, although they’re fairly commonplace in most

for arts sake Subject to Ruin

VIVIENNE BINNS + HOSSEIN VALAMANESH www.casulapowerhouse.com 18 July - 7 September 2014 Vivienne Binns and Hossein Valamanesh are mighty forces in the Australian contemporary art landscape. Their individual practices are uncompromising and evolving as both artists continually experiment with material, form and subject. Despite this ongoing evolution spanning nearly half a century of art practice, an acutely individual visual language has pervaded each artist’s work, marking it as their own as instantly as a signature. This exhibition is a rare opportunity to see such a broad range of works from each artist’s oeuvre. With over 70 works, including work that has never been shown in Sydney before, filling all four gallery spaces. This exhibition does not seek parallels in the two artists’ work rather it celebrates difference and presents major bodies of work that relate to each other in surprising ways. Both artists have collaborated with other artists throughout their careers and are participating in this exhibition with the same spirit of collaboration as neither artist knows what to expect in showing their work alongside each other. This says much about their practices, taking risks and pushing boundaries with a natural confidence that has been cultivated over their vast artistic careers. BINNS + VALAMANESH tosses two of Australia’s heavyweights of contemporary art together like a crisp, fresh salad and 34

this seemingly unlikely pairing will be an aesthetic adventure to unchartered territory. SUBJECT TO RUIN www.casulapowerhouse.com 24 May - 6 July 2014 Renowned Chinese contemporary artist and activist, Ai Weiwei, has been described as the most influential and important contemporary artist of our time. This rise to stardom however, was not without controversy and destruction in his path. In 1995, Weiwei produced the artwork, Dropping a Dynasty Urn. As the title suggests, the artwork consisted of Weiwei purposely dropping an antique Neolithic Chinese vase from a height, smashing into pieces as it hit the ground. The provocative statement underscored the disposability in contemporary China of signs and symbols of the past, displaced by a new consumer aesthetic of cheap abundance. Weiwei’s artistic practice and social commentary continued to resonate concepts of liberal thinking and individualism – a deep desire for a civil society. As a result, Weiwei was mysteriously detained, placed under house arrest and fined for defacement of the Chinese government, and was deemed a ‘radical’. Subject to Ruin is a contemporary art exhibition that not only responds to facets of destruction, degradation and disaster in everyday society, it is a platform for reflection, experimentation and free speech with reference to www.homesguide.com.au

actions of awareness and a need for change. The exhibition looks to make contemporary art accessible by inviting artists and audiences to question, discuss and de-construct artworks (both literally and metaphorically) through a comprehensive engagement with the temporality of materials and process; whether that be meticulous and calculated, or spontaneous and reactive. Despite the novelty of wreckage and havoc, the selected artworks consist of many layers of complex meaning which may be read in various ways and are overtly, or covertly, critical of social rules and settings of our past, present and future. The notion of ‘ruin’ suggests that following a process of decay and deconstruction, not all is lost – the remains that are left over signify both despair and hope. Subject to Ruin is not a display of a dystopian view, but recognition of destruction as necessary for growth and progress PEOPLE ON THE EDGE BY CHRIS RAINIER Paddington Reservoir, Oxford Street 17 May - 8 June 2014 Chris Rainier, National Geographic Society Fellow & award-winning Photographer, takes us on a journey into cultures from all over the globe spanning the last 30 years through imagery captured across a variety of modern technology such as smart phones, cameras, computers, and video. This is not only to both preserve their quickly disappearing ancient traditions but also

to incorporate traditional knowledge with cutting edge technology to find sustainable solutions for the pressing global issues of the 21st Century on old world cultures.

Erika Diettes travelled to different cities in Antioquia (Colombia) to interview women who had been present at the torture and murder of their loved ones. Diettes photographed the women, closely cropped in black and white, at a moment of great vulnerability – all but one with their eyes closed. The resultant twenty photographs were printed on seven feet tall silk panels and form the work ‘Sudarios’ (shrouds are a burial cloak, a cloth that shrouds the body of the deceased). The work is usually displayed in sacred spaces such as churches and convents with a sound track of a barely audible, sighing female voice. The work will be exhibited at St Canice Church which has a long tradition of working with marginalised people and refugees.

The project is multi-layered and begins with the still photographs of Singapore based photographer Chia Ming Chien. His still photographs are realised into video by Aymeric De Meautis utilising 3D Compositing techniques. In the performance phase the musicians react and improvise to the rendered video. Each performance of The Wires Project features a unique video that the musicians have not seen previously, provoking a fundamentally spontaneous reaction. As a metaphor, ‘the wires’ infers a means of communication and the project was fostered with communication and the exchange of ideas as the central focus. This exchange occurs on a number of levels: the inter-personal level – between the artists themselves and between the artists and the audience. The inter-art level – between music and visual arts. And the inter-cultural level between Western and Asian world views and perspectives. Using a combination of acoustic instruments and electronic effects, the musicians interact and follow each other’s ideas, moving spontaneously with the video.

DEPICTING MARILYN BY JOHN DUNCAN www.tapgallery.org.au 9 June - 14 June 2014 With the first brush I picked up five years ago, I was immediately inspired to paint the physical human being. In doing this I strive to engage their spirit, developing a personal connection to portray this undefinable on canvas. My goal is to use colour as the medium to illustrate that person. This work see’s Marilyn Monroe as the figure. Yes, she is; the legend, star, hero and icon – yet still a delicate human being. The name has been taken from her book ‘Fragments,’ a record of notes and letters throughout her adult life. Its from this book, that i have taken a verse to reflect what I believe were her feelings at that time. I trust this has been done in a very respectful manner for Ms Monroe.

sydney’s top spots for dogs The best spots to play, stay and explore with your pooch

S

ydney is a great city for dog lovers. Whether you’d like to treat your four-legged friend to a gourmet meal, spoil her with the latest and greatest canine couture or simply let her run amok in an off-leash park, you’ll find what you’re looking for in the harbour city. But where should you go to give your dog the best Sydney experience? Here’s a guide to the three best places in Sydney to take your pooch. There are plenty of cafes and other eateries in Sydney with a positive attitude towards dog owners at outdoor tables, and they’ll go out of their way to make sure your pooch is well catered for while you sit down to a meal. But the best place to take your dog when you’re hankering for some cafe fare is Leichhardt’s Cafe Bones. This inner west institution is open seven days and promotes itself as the world’s first truly dog-friendly cafe. Cafe Bones is a vibrant meeting place for people and dogs, serving up highquality food and beverages for both humans and their pets.

You can enjoy a cappuccino while your furry friend enjoys a Pupaccino; you can enjoy a light lunch while Rover tucks into the Cafe Bones range of gourmet dog biscuits. And you don’t have to worry about any non animal lovers being offended by the sight of your pooch - this is a place for dog lovers, so you’re sure to be surrounded by like-minded people. To top it all off, Cafe Bones is found in Hawthorne Canal Reserve, a hugely popular off-leash dog park. So, once your pooch has finished chowing down, he can go and make a host of new doggy friends and run off his lunch. Perfect!

Play Whether you head north, south, east or west, Sydney is home to some beautiful and well-maintained off-leash dog parks. Perhaps the best park, however, is found right in the heart of the city in Centennial Parklands. Centennial Parklands offers a massive 154 hectares (43 per cent of its total area) of off-leash space. With so much room for dogs to roam free, it’s no great surprise that this park is so popular with the city’s dog owners. If your dog loves running,

frolicking, socialising and generally just being a dog, this is the place to take him.

Stay How great would it be to pamper yourself for a night or two in a luxury hotel? What about if you could take your pooch along for a night of indulgence as well? Well, that’s exactly what you can do at the Hughenden Boutique Hotel. Located in leafy Woollahra, the Hughenden is a boutique hotel which also features pet-friendly rooms. The elegant Hughenden has seen everything from poodles and terriers through to golden retrievers through its doors, and the staff ensure everything possible is done to make the stay comfortable for you and your pet. Pets are welcome in a number of areas of the hotel and can even join you for breakfast. During your stay the Hughenden can also help arrange pet-sitting, dogwalking, and even a visit to the doggy day spa. And just across the road is Centennial Parklands, with its special leash-free areas so your pup can run wild. It’s the ideal place to stay for petfriendly getaway. Words by: Tim Falk

grieving the death of a pet Artwork by Black Ink Works blackinkworks@gmail.com

A

ngela came to see me about her depression, which she said had been dragging on for months. I asked her if anything significant had happened at the time of onset, but she said it hadn’t. Her work and her relationship were going okay, but she said she was just feeling down. During the investigative process we covered her interest in the stock market, her love of netball, the results of her Italian cooking classes and everything else, bar the weather. And then it came out. She said it was probably just a stupid coincidence, but around the time that she had started feeling low, her cat had died. She hadn’t mentioned it initially because it was silly. He had been a stray who had wandered into her garden and she had only had him for a year. “I didn’t even feed him initially as I don’t like cats,” she explained. “But every night around 7pm, there he was. So eventually I gave him a bowl of milk. He purred and rubbed against me. At first I was put off. But there was just something about him.” From a bowl of milk, the care of Rufus escalated to vet exams, getting him neutered, tagged, vaccinated, and buying him a rug and toys. She even confessed that a conflict with her

boyfriend arose because she allowed Rufus to snuggle in on her side of the bed sometimes. Then Rufus got sick. The vet said it was cancer; untreatable and incurable. It only took a few weeks for Rufus to be in so much pain that Angela felt it was only merciful to have him put down.

“Don’t underestimate the impact the loss of a pet can have, it’s important to take as much time as you need to grieve.” As she told me this, tears streamed down her face and she apologised for being so silly over something so dumb as a stray cat. I can’t begin to tell you how many clients in my 31 years of practising have ended up in my office because of the death of a beloved pet. The only relationship similar to the one with a pet is a relationship with a very young child, in that the love from a pet is completely unconditional. Studies show that domestic pets in www.homesguide.com.au

rehabilitation hospitals, nursing homes and institutions improve patients’ moods and attitudes. Pets teach children responsibility. They’re not only loving and loyal; they’re individuals and have personalities. They never let you down, there are no trust issues, they don’t reject you, they don’t criticise, they’re always pleased to see you and they don’t judge. Why wouldn’t a pet owner be devastated by its loss? Not many loved ones are perfect as that. I’ve only learned the intensity of this bond since being a therapist through others’ experiences. As a child, I was only allowed to have fish as pets. I never found bonding with a guppy very gratifying. It’s not unnatural to grieve more for a pet than a family member. It’s quite possible you had a better relationship with your animal. So if you lose a pet, it’s important to talk to someone who understands the depth of your feelings. “Dumb” animals already know what others take hours and money to learn. They give people permission to be who they need to be. Source: www.bodyandsoul.com Toby Green Relationships expert is a regular writer for body+soul.
